In Something Like Human, the moody and brutally emotional rock band Fuel has a solid follow-up to their platinum Sunburn disc from 1998. Produced by Ben Grosse (Filter, Vertical Horizon) and coproduced by Fuel guitarist-songwriter Carl Bell, Something Like Human picks up where Sunburn left off, both musically and emotionally. From Brett Scallions's heart-wrenching vocal performance on the CD's first single, "Hemorrhage (in My Hands)," with its mournful reflections to the "Shimmer"-like "Slow," the bleak, dark temperament that characterized Sunburn is continued. Even seemingly upbeat moments are buried deep in paranoia ("Knives") or leave a bitter taste ("Solace"). Not as dirge-heavy as Alice in Chains (though "Down" sounds like that band) or as commercially viable as Creed, Fuel nonetheless have the strong songs and melodies to make their doleful musical visions eminently memorable and quietly cool. --Katherine Turman --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

4 out of 5 stars Not what I expected, glad I bought it..........2007-04-22

I was very hesitant to buy Something Like Human when it came out; I was never a big fan of much music during the "grunge" years or shortly after. I simply prefer music that is more fun rather than stuff that has lyrics that are about how much everything sucks. Now while the lyrics are fairly dark - they are done so with context and meaning. The "stories" of Bad Day and Innocent show this. The music also has more melody than alot of the rock that was around at the time. Brett Scallions is a very good vocalist, I really like the way he delivers the songs with emotion and power.

Song Highlights include: Last Time, Hemorrhage, Bad Day, Prove, Knives and Innocent.

Overall, Something Like Human is a very solid album with some great moments and Fuel, as a band, show their talents. Definitely worth a listen.

when i first heard hermorrhage, i really felt life was worth living, its the kind of music you never get tired of following the rhythm, i doubt is fuel can come up with a better track through out their entire career.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME CD.......2005-09-28

Fuel are a great band that has progressed to producing excellent albums such as "SOMETHING LIKE HUMAN". SLH has some excellent songs and is almost as good as "NATURAL SELECTION". My favorite songs on the album would have to be:

1. LAST TIME - 10/10: This song has a catchy chorus and a good beat. An excellent start to the album.

3. EMPTY SPACES - 9/10: Could be a bit faster but still an excellent song with excellent lyrics and awesome guitaring.

all the songs up to 12.

if you like the rock of nickelback or puddle of mudd then i recomended this album to you.

5 out of 5 stars Great Buy.......2005-07-06

Received the CD quickly and in good condition. A few scratches but works well. Would purchase again for such good prices.

5 out of 5 stars It will blow you away!.......2005-06-18

Having bought this album over four years ago, I felt I should write a review because - not surprisingly - I still listen to it quite frequently. I listen to a lot of American Alternative and this is quite possibly as heavy as it gets for me but "Something like human" is just one of a kind and one of the most precious CDs that I possess. It is not only Brett Scallions voice or the quality of the outstanding lyrics written by the guitarist but it is the combination of both, together with the amazing melodies and the power and the emotion with which Brett sings the songs that make this album so special and unique. In a time where most artists of this genre sound very similar, it is not an easy job to produce an album that actually stands out. This is so much more powerful and so much better than anything by Creed, Saliva, Staind, Nickelback or Puddle of Mudd. If you like any of these, then you are going to love this album.
The album's opening track "Last time" is one of the strongest songs of the album. It's got a really catchy tune and some great lyrics, it's the perfect opening to the album that makes you turn the song up really loud and shout along to the chorus: "This is the last time, I bleed for you!"
Some other highlights include "Hemorrhage", "Bad Day", "Solace", "Innocence". This album is the perfect mix of powerful emotional rock ballads and heavy melodic rock songs - a truly amazing album that is guaranteed to blow you away!

3 out of 5 stars Acoustic "Fuel" is way better.......2006-08-29

Sounds a bit too much like a generic band at times to be entirely worthy of purchase. A few gems include "Innocent," "Bad Day," and "Hemorrhage (In My Hands)", especially the acoustic version for the latter (Track 13). Overall this album seems more loud and obnoxious than purely good. Sometimes I forgot I was listening to music, thinking "what is all this noise?" Perhaps just get your hands on track 13, and maybe a few of the singles, and you'll be all set.

5 out of 5 stars Fuel... Excellent!.......2005-08-03

I really enjoy this album. Fuel is the bomb. I got to hear them play live once. Very cool stuff. This album has about five great songs on it. Definitely worth a purchase. If you like their style definitely pick up Natural Selection as well. You will be significantly satisfied.

5 out of 5 stars Brought a 2nd copy for the bonus songs.......2005-02-19

Already having purchased the original version of Fuel: Something Like Human, I came across this Special Expanded Version that included 3 bonus songs that once I listened to 'Daniel', I knew I had to have. And the acoustic version of 'In My Hands' is better than the studio version.
I would advise interested Fuel fans or music buffs to get this CD for the extra songs and the bonus multimedia once you insert it into your CD-ROM.

5 out of 5 stars Human can't begin to describe this.......2004-05-23

"...and prove to me... you're SOMETHING LIKE HUMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

As the sun dawns on another day, we can all take comfort in knowing that there is one band out there that never fails to create emotionally tangible music, a band we all know as FUEL.

In the year of our Lord 2000, FUEL made an album that proves something so much more than human, and in 2003 the band came back to make sure we hadn't forgotten it. With the band's most recent album released, their previous works have now been re-issued, featuring new artwork, new tracks, and of course, new little stickers all over the packaging!

There are three more songs tacked onto the original 12-track album, the first being the wonderful acoustic rendition of 'Hemorrhage (in my hands)'. This was the version mainly heard on the radio, and though the album version and this acoustic track are basically exactly alike, there is something so much more real and lovely to the acoustic version... though I couldn't really tell just what that 'something' is. Long story short, this song is to DIE for(not really, but I think you get the picture).

The next two bonus tracks are great acoustic covers that FUEL often plays at their shows, the first being a song written by the 70s-era Elton John called 'Daniel'. I seriously LOVE this song. The guitar sounds so intricately simple and beautiful, and Brett's voice is so lovely with this melody that it automatically FEELS like a FUEL song... even though it's quite different from their usual stuff.

The same could be said for the last track 'Going to California', a LED ZEPPELIN cover, obviously. The vocals, the song writing, the melodies are just all impeccable, and I love hearing FUEL play the songs that they enjoy and have fun with. Very good music, my friends.

The new artwork really isn't all that new, it being the same metallic face from the original record, just with different organization. The new SUNBURN artwork is *much* cooler

So all in all, some great additions to the album that let you see a little more of what FUEL is interested in, and it's a great way to commemorate the release of FUEL's latest album, "Natural Selection". If you're interested in getting this new version of "Something Like Human", go for it: I saw it at Wal-Mart for less than $10! If you've already got the original, it'd probably be better to just borrow it from someone to get the new tracks. IF YOU'RE A FRIKIN DIE-HARD, GET IT NOW AND ASK NO QUESTIONS!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2004-05-12

Bonus tracks make this CD even better. Fuel does an excellent job covering Elton Johns, "Daniel". CD is a must have!
