This big rock candy mountain of an album justifies some if by no means all of the poses and pretentious statements made by Manchester's natural-born rock & roll deities. A dramatic attempt to rekindle the flames of the original British Invasion, Morning Glory rolls 30 years of Britpop tradition into one irresistible (if achingly self-conscious) whole. "Wonderwall" can be read as a Beatles tribute, "Don't Look Back in Anger" feels like a Mott The Hoople anthem and "She's Electric" and "Morning Glory" are chewy pop confections. --Jeff Bateman

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Oasis best.......2007-07-19

In my opinion this is one of the best albums of the mid 90's. Songs such as wonderwall, don't look back in anger, and she's eletric are some of the coolest songs on this album. Highly reccomended!

5 out of 5 stars A classic album with a lot of great tracks on it.......2007-06-27

Definitely as good as it ever got with Oasis. Wonderwall is still a radio standard and this album has plenty of songs that come close to that kind of greatness.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Listening.......2007-06-02

Oasis is a superb band, and while they did enjoy moderate success in the United States with "Wonderwall" and a few other tunes, their popularity in the UK is immensely greater (in fact, this album itself is the number two selling album of all time in the UK, second only to The Beatles). And it is truly unfortunate that they never reached this level of success in America. Oasis could have been much more, and if time hadn't been wasted brawling and drinking, I believe these Brits could have even surpassed Nirvana in popularity in the States. A bold statement, I know, but just give this immaculate album a listen. (What's The Story) Morning Glory? is definitely one of the best albums of the nineties and possibly one of the best of all time.

It is apparent that the lads of Oasis have put alot into every track. There is not one weak song on the album. Albeit it really isn't the most original stuff out there (the songs of The Beatles, T. Rex, etc. all come to mind when listening), but it is by far some of the most satisfying and enjoyable Britpop out there. The UK has always been a haven for excellent rock bands...Pink Floyd, Led Zep, The Who, The Clash...and with this album, Oasis can now be listed among those. Leading the wave of British rockers in the 90's, now looking back it is apparent that these guys were a blessing, the complete opposite of the grunge and lame pop dominating the airwaves in those days.

On to the songs themselves, "Wonderwall", "Don't Look Back In Anger", "Cast No Shadow", and "Champagne Supernova" are all instantly recognizable as some of the most popular hits found on here. However, throughout there are many more gems. "Hello", which leads us off, is by far one of the rougher songs on this overall softer (for Oasis, at least) CD, more reminiscent of Definitely Maybe, and is a great way to lead things off. In the same vein as "Hello" lies "Morning Glory", a fantastic song with an incredibly catchy guitar riff. One of the most underrated songs on here, with clever lyrics and a unique rhythm is "She's Electric". Everything on here deserves a listen, as everything is just as good as the next.

Overall, a must-have for those who wish to return to the good old days of rock and roll. This album is certainly a piece of the progression of Oasis, but musically it harks back to the days when an the entire album was true music, no filler included. A superb CD.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible, gut-wrenching, awful.......2007-06-02

Good god, if there is the worst, pointless band ever, it would be Oasis.

Oasis's music is boring, unoriginal, and pointless. After listening to the totally deritave, ________ rock, it's a wonder why Lame Gallagher and his _________ brother Noel think they are the best band ever. NOt even close, not even close. Hey Now! Is a ___________ attempt at a ballad, and with Lame's shreiking, piercing, whiny voice on the top is like listening to the sounds of a fire over a screaming person trapped in the fire.

Speaking of __________ singing, Lame Gallagher's annoying voice shoots down ANY chance of making Morning Glory?. IT's bad enough that his attitude is laughable, but his ridicolous image on stage only covers up how much of a __________ singer he is. It's an insult to Johnny Rotten when he described his voice of being a mix between a Beatles member and the legendary Sex Pistols singer. His lyrics aren't original, so the chance he has of becoming a good singer shoots himself down.

And finally, the atnics of Lame and Noel makes Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst seem like a saint. The brothers attack George Harrison, Phil Collins, yet those singers do their own things and don't suck. The fighting and ridicolous atnics that are nothing but laughable, immature, _____ to rational people.

Don't believe the hype. There is nothing redeeming about Oasis. Try the Beatles instead (no __________ duh!)

5 out of 5 stars They're perfect. Just don't get to know them!.......2007-05-16

There's a hackneyed saying, "Time will tell." But cliches are often cliches for a reason. There's truth to them. Case in point, "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?" I just listened to it for the first time in ten years, and, well, I love it, all over again. How many albums can you say that about? Certainly not Born in the USA.

What makes this album so great? Simple. Every song is good. Some, like the micro epic closer, Champagne Supernova, are classic. I just wish the jamming guitar solo would go on for another 10 minutes, but that's okay. And if maybe some of the other songs took off in that balls-to-the-wall sort of way. No? That's okay, too.

The only song I'd skip is one of their most popular, Wonderwall. I don't know. It just feels droany and whiny. But it's still good. That's what this album is all about (even that song that's just a clip of a jam is worth it). It's like they could do nothing wrong. If only they stayed that way. Oh well.

Just a warning. Don't ever, I mean ever, listen to an interview with them. Promise? Seriously. It's like if you were into Lenny Kravitz and all of a sudden heard him say that he enjoys clubbing Harp Seals and strangling kittens. That's why I try not to read tell-all biographies. If someone's an artist, just let their art speak for them. Not their misguided words.

Most of all, sit back and enjoy the Brit invasion album in 30 years. And no, they're not better than the Beatles. Just a little different. And a lot more obnoxious.

This CD is the most inspiring one that I have ever heard. I was going through a rough period in my life and a patient gave me this CD. I listened to it morning, noon, and night every chance I got. After a while things seemed to get better and the load was not as heavy as it had been.
Thanks to Juanita for sharing her soul with us and Praise to God for letting her be able to share with us.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD!!.......2002-06-07

Wow...That was my first word when I listend to this CD.

I like classical numbers more than like traditional songs of
other countries, so the 1st one was wonderful
(Of course as well as the second one.)

When you want to relax, you may choose the 1st one, but
if you want to be excited, choose 2nd one!!

You will feel as if you were out of this world.

5 out of 5 stars I absolutely LOVE this!.......2002-02-20

When I received this album, I found that it was much, much more than I had expected. The angelic, pure, innocent yet DEFINED voices of these boys add the spark to your day. (at least to mine!)

The first CD is absolutely beautiful choral music which is really relaxing. I DO prefer boys' singing to adults, because it just sounds so much better.
When I bought the CD, I wasn't expecting much out of the second CD because I bought it for the first CD's sake, but the second CD turned out to be my real favorite.
Not that I don't adore the first one, but the second one is SO IRRESISTABLY CUTE!! whenever I listen to it, I keep on smiling and going "awww. isn't this cute!"
It is REALLY sweet and fun to listen to. I just LOVE this CDs and want to give 10 stars out of 5, but obviously there are limitations, so..

Well, if you like choral music, you won't regret getting this one.

5 out of 5 stars Vienna Boys do it again.......2001-08-18

Their performance is just superb. If you like classical music. I find this elevating my spirits.

4 out of 5 stars Wow.......2000-09-06

What can really be said about this two CD set except "Wow." The tone quality and emotion contained in the music is incredible, and I don't think there's another boys' choir out there who can match it. The rendition of Schubert's "Ave Maria" alone is worth buying the CD. Amazing. Between the two CD's there is a great variety of music as well, ranging from the soft, sad "Locus Iste," to Johann Strauss' polkas. There is a piece for every mood. These CDs are more than worth the money and rank among the favorites in my collection.

5 out of 5 stars "Lord, How Come Me Here".......2007-06-18

I must add, to the praises above, that Kathleen Battle's "Lord, How Come Me Here" is the best "quick" explanation of the long-lasting effects of slavery that I can think of. The line, "They sold my children away," says it all.

And the VERY funny "Scandelize My Name" is also worth the price of the total album!

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2007-03-22

You know, after owning both the CD and VHS of this performance, and having been coached by Sylvia Olden Lee herself, it is no wonder why spiritual mean so much to me. And these two ladies bare their souls and bring these masterpieces to life! WOW!!!

5 out of 5 stars uhm......yeah right!!.......2006-06-21

Clearly you are mistaken. I don't know who that guy is-the person below recommended-but there is NO COMPARISON to JESSYE NORMAN AND KATHLEEN BATTLE!!!! Jessye Norman herself has *30* HONARY DOCTRATES from places like Harvard, Juliard, Yale, Cambridge....I mean HELLO!!!! That guy had no where near the ease, the musicality or even the breath support as these two veterans show!! It is a beautiful CD though it came out in 1991 and I HIGHLY recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars scadalise my name.......2004-10-29

2 out of 5 stars Broadway takes on the spiritual ..........2004-01-29

... takes it on and puts it on the canvas by the end of the first round.

I'm going to be the dissenting voice here: thank goodness I signed this disk out of the public library 'cause I'm sure not going to listen to it twice.

There is nothing wrong with the performances. Jessye Norman and Kathleen Battle sing beautifully, and there's no problem with the pick-up orchestra under James Levine.

The problem, and it's huge, is the conception of the show and the musical arrangements. To make the video marketable, I suppose, the producers decided that the concert had to be big: big names, big arrangements, big effects. So we have eighteen spirituals given the musical theatre treatment, with a philharmonic chorus providing chain-gang sound effects, big brass, and big percussion -- including a chinese gong. A chinese gong in a spiritual??? Spare me! Almost every track turns out sounding like either a curtain-raiser or a big, end-of-act production number with cute and predictable modulations between some of the stanzas and the sort of curly-cue orchestral ornamentation typical of Broadway shows.

And you know what? It all kills the spirituals stone dead. The spiritual is one of those musical forms where less is more and very little is best of all. That's how they started, after all. That's how and why they worked for their original audiences, and that's why they were powerful enough to make the transition from folk song to art song. If you want to hear Battle sing spirituals that are irresistible, listen to the set on her Salzburg recital CD, also with Levine (ASIN B00000E31B). There, the music speaks for itself and speaks with a strength and a beauty that the tracks on this disk never approach.

For his third collaboration with director Sam Mendes (after American Beauty and The Shawshank Redemption), composer Thomas Newman has come up with one of his finest scores. The music mixes modern atmospheric quasi-rock touches with Middle Eastern influences (with particularly great success on the tracks "Welcome to the Suck" and "Zoomies."). The latter manifest themselves in both the beats and the instrumentation--the credits include soloists on exotic instruments such as the bowed cumbus (a type of banjo-like lute) and the processed xaphoons (a sax made of bamboo). All the more jarring, then, when the CD's handful of songs pop up. (It's quite a jolt to hear Bobby McFerrin's "Don't Worry Be Happy" after four eerie instrumental tracks.) The other song picks are obvious but well chosen: T-Rex's "Bang a Gong (Get It On)," "Naughty by Nature's "O.P.P.," Public Enemy's "Fight the Power," and Tom Waits's "Soldier's Things." Still, it's Newman's work that propels this CD, not the pick-up songs. Surprisingly, Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries," which figures in one of the movie's most memorable scenes (when soldiers watch Apocalypse Now), isn't included here. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars You fools!.......2006-10-27

I am reading all the negative reviews of this soundtrack, and most of them mention the absence of Kanye West's "Jesus Walks." One reviewer gives the album one star because he was "misled" into buying the album.

Um, hello? This is an instrumental score for the film! NOT a Various Artists soundtrack! This is, you may have noticed, an album that falls under the name of Thomas Newman! If anyone bought this expecting other music, then it's entirely their own fault. It even says on the front: "MUSIC BY THOMAS NEWMAN."

That said, I'd also like to correct Amazon on something - they said this is Newman's third outing with Mendes, the other two being "Shawshank Redemption" and "American Beauty."

Shawshank was directed by Frank Darabont, NOT Sam Mendes.

Mendes' other pairing with Newman was actually on 2002's "Road to Perdition," which is another great soundtrack I'd heartily recommend purchasing.

3 out of 5 stars Missing Theme Song - but otherwise not bad.......2006-03-01

If you've watched the previews for this film, you're likely expecting a song called Jesus Walks by Kanye West to be on the soundtrack but it's not there - very annoying. But otherwise it's a pretty good CD of music to listen to while you work out or drive fast.

3 out of 5 stars Fine score, but a consumer warning for the CD.......2006-01-20

Thomas Newman's original music for JARHEAD is not only typically daring with many unconventional sounds (utilizing samples, electronic treatments and exotic percussion), but one of his most stirring, rock-influenced efforts as well (as with the opening track, "Welcome to the Suck"). At first I thought there were no melodies as memorable as "Dead Already" from AMERICAN BEAUTY or "Road to Chicago" from ROAD TO PERDITION, but the 3/4-time march used in both "Raining Oil" and "Desert Storm" has grown on me. Of course the CD is recommendable for Newman's score alone. But...

...while one doesn't buy a CD of this nature primarily for the extra songs, one does expect the extras to be competently presented when they appear. So I was taken aback to hear Public Enemy's "Fight the Power" at a faster tempo and higher pitch than usual, as though mastered from a sped-up tape. I can't think of any intentional reason for this, so I'm assuming it was a mistake, but either way I found it not only annoying in itself but because of "Fight the Power"'s thematic significance, with its reference to the Bobby McFerrin tune heard earlier in the movie. ("'Don't Worry Be Happy' was a number one jam/Damn if I say it you can slap me right here".)

So then, while I like the Thomas Newman score a lot, I'm docking the CD a star for the sped-up "Fight the Power". Caveat emptor.

5 out of 5 stars Thomas Newman is a Genius!.......2006-01-07

Thomas Newman is brilliant as always and delivers beautifully. Having read the book prior to the motion picture, Thomas Newman truly brings Swofford's tale to life. If you enjoyed The Horse Whisperer or the Shawshank Redemption score, then you'll thoroughly enjoy Jarhead.

3 out of 5 stars Almost perfect for the film, loses points as a cd.......2005-12-23

Make no mistake - Jarhead proves Thomas Newman's abillity to write music for film. He is not making the music in order to show off his amazing talents, he is making the music so it is perfect for the film. Whereas some composers might score depressing scenes with grand sweeping movements trying to make themselves look like complex composers, Newman knows what will enhance the scene and what won't, and what can convey the message required.

Ultimately, this describes Jarhead perfectly. I have seen the movie and music is seamless and perfect for it. For the most part, there is a sonic texture created, with guitars and drums to represent the bravado of the characters. If you are a fan of Newman's stirring orchestral works this is definitely not something you would like. Newer fans of "American Beauty" and the like will find things to enjoy here, but not in as vibrant or pleasing a way as in that album. The score on it's own is just not as exciting or involving as it could be. It is interesting in it's own right, but not very pleasing to hear. However, there are many good tracks interspersed throughout the score to take you to the good spot.

Overall, Jarhead warrants a 4.5/5 for the film, but on a cd, it's score drops to 3/5. It is pleasant at times, and mostly an interesting CD, but there are too many Newman masterpieces to consider this one high on your buying list. Then agan, if you are a Newman fan, this CD should satisfy you're urge to see what the guy is up to. Final score? Three out of five.

    F. Scott Fitzgerald said there are no second acts in American lives, but Tim Buckley wouldn't listen. Morning Glory brings together the two extraordinary, albeit all-too-brief, incarnations of Buckley's musical career: the pure-voiced '60s troubadour who gave us stunningly beautiful albums like Goodbye & Hello and the howling early-'70s experimentalist seemingly hell-bent on ravaging his past romanticism. For those put off by the tortured, erratic brilliance that came to the fore on the difficult Starsailor and downright strange Greetings from L.A. albums, this two-CD, 34-song anthology nicely condenses the artist's nine-album, nine-year evolution from folk innocent to soul-scorched iconoclast. Heard in this context, the title song's tale of a sheltered romantic who befriends and ultimately condemns an uncompromising vagrant feels like it's the young Buckley confronting the artist he would later become. Profoundly moving and richly rewarding, Morning Glory finds resonance between the two sides of Buckley's genius that he was unable to reconcile in his own short life. --Bill Forman

5 out of 5 stars el autentico canto del cisne............2007-03-12

    4 out of 5 stars I Can't Help but Notice Jeff.......2005-05-22

I came to listen to Tim Buckley as a Jeff Buckley fan. Although some consider it blasphemy to even mention the two in a sentence together, the fact of the matter is that their styles undeniably resemble each other. Still, their voices are (unfortunately for me) very different.

Because I am not a fan of the era, I knew that I would have to be very objective when first listening to the music so I could ease my way into appreciating it. The early materials on the albums are very folkie and are hard for me to listen to. "Wings" is a great example; I hate the way Tim pronounces the words so properly like a choral singer.

Tim's voice does resemble someone, or a group of people, but it is hard to put my finger on who they are because of my lack of knowledge from the era.

As I got to the later stuff, I was kind of impressed. The booklet included in this collection says that Tim's later music is hard to categorize, which is exactly right. "Buzzin Fly" is happy and carefree in the opening. "Who Could Deny You" has a beautiful shift in tone in the middle of the song. "Song To the Siren" has a haunting screaming noise in the background. The songs seem to be experimental but they're decent accomplishments.

I still couldn't ignore the similarities between Tim and Jeff. Both were excellent in concert because they were freely personal and experimental. Both allowed themselves to be imperfect and feminine when necessary. Both made use of simple melodies, meaningful lyrics, falsetto, and soaring vibratos. Both even used be-bop in their live shows. In "Blue Melody", Tim moans identically to the way Jeff did. In "I've Been Out Walking", Tim's "Ain't got no time" has a strain similar to those Jeff used for effect in live performances. In "Strange Feelin'", Tim's voice seems to echo Jeff's from "I got this strange" which sounds like Jeff's opening to "Mojo Pin" and "feeling" which sounds like the sarcasm in Jeff's "Moodswing Whiskey". Their taste even seems to be similar; Tim's version of "Sally Go Round the Roses" sounds like a song that Jeff would have covered. Sadly, it seems that Tim did not have the same ability to affect a wide variety of audiences that Jeff did.

4 out of 5 stars Talented folkie and experimental genius.......2004-06-06

Tim Buckley started out as a folk-rocker but ended up as a musical explorer whose sound would extend the boundaries of popular music and defy categorisation. The billowing beauty of his later work, on Starsailor in particular, would only begin to be appreciated after his death in 1975.

His first album Tim Buckley was released in October 1966 when he was only 19 years old. Buckley's passionate voice exquisitely wrapped itself around lyricist Larry Becket's romantic songs like Song Slowly Sung and the lovely Valentine Melody which is absent here.

During the hippy year of 1967 Buckley was doing the folk club circuit in New York City where he recorded his first masterpiece, the accessible Goodbye And Hello which was his breakthrough album and largest seller ever. Classic tracks included the impressive I Never Asked To Be Your Mountain, the moving Once I Was, omitted here, and of course the Dylan-influenced title track.

But instead of consolidating his success Buckley veered off into the most experimental of directions, rather too unusual for his 1960s folk audience to appreciate. Initially he moved into minimalism on the album Happy/Sad (1968), co-produced with ex-Loving Spoonful guitarist Zal Yanofsky. The wistful Blue Afternoon (1969) and Lorca (1970) are jazz-folk fusions.

The next album, Starsailor, was even weirder. It is a strange journey into the realms of avant-garde jazz where Buckley applies his voice as an instrument to spectacular effect. Scott Walker in his weirder moments comes to mind. But it did include two very accessible masterpieces: The poignant Moulin Rouge (sung partly in French) and the exquisite Song To The Siren, which was beautifully covered by This Mortal Coil in 1984.

Considered by many to be his opus magnum, the uncompromisingly erotic Greetings From LA (1973) was an enthusiastic embrace of all things funky, effusive and sensual. Move With Me deals with the wrath of a jealous husband, whilst Sweet Surrender is an explanation of his infidelity. There is great sadness in Hong Kong Bar, social commentary in Nighthawkin' (unfortunately not present on this compilation) and shades of sado-masochism in Make It Right, a song comparable in theme to Velvet Underground's Venus In Furs.

Greetings From LA was followed by the unremarkable Sefronia (1973) and Look At The Fool (1974), which proved to be his last album as he died on June 29, 1975 in Santa Monica, California of an overdose. Buckley left a memorable body of work that is being appreciated more and more with the passing time. Although not perfect (vide the omissions listed above) this compilation is a great introduction to the work of a unique musical genius. Like Nick Drake and Tim Hardin, Buckley's music has stood the test of time very well and his reputation continues to grow. I give the album only 4 stars because of the omissions.

5 out of 5 stars it's only an introduction to the man..........2004-02-02

A great two discs, but I can't give it a straight up recommendation, just because, if you're not a huge fan of Tim Buckley after listening to these two discs, you'll feel like you wasted your money, and if you are a huge Tim Buckley fan after listening to these two discs, you'll only want to buy his original albums!
Still, it does have some great tracks which are not available on any other CD, or are from out of print albums which go for $90 used these days, (songs from Starsailor and Blue Afternoon, and the version of Song to the Siren performed live on The Monkees show, which is definitely a great addition). The only song I can complain about is "Goodbye and Hello"- maybe the only song on here I dislike- I listened to it once, but now, I press the skip button every time it starts. Makes me feel bad for people who own the vinyl version, who have to carefully lift up the needle every time it starts... They really should have put two shorter and better songs on instead.
Buying original Tim albums just MIGHT be a better purchase for some people, for several reasons. Like I already said, I wanted to buy all the albums after I heard this. Also, transitions between songs from different albums are not smooth, unlike compilation albums of musicians with more consistent styles. A lot of the tracks from different periods in his career sound awkward together, in my opinion. For this reason (and the inclusion of "goodbye and hello") I almost didn't give this five stars.
Also, it seems that most people prefer a particular period of Tim's career over others, and would probably be better off getting "Tim Buckley" if they like his early Elektra folk stylings, "Lorca" if they like his experimental stylings, etc.
I think anyone can appreciate his inconsistency more if they look at each album individually, not as a progression of his career. I think it's best just to look at each album as Tim doing whatever style he happened to be doing at the time, rather than hold each album up to the standards of a "Tim Buckley" album- whatever their definition of a Tim Buckley album may be. I think that being able to sing "she is the day of love" just as convincingly as he can sing "get on top of me woman" (why was that song not on here? as an incentive for you to buy "Greetings From LA," maybe) makes Tim even more impressive a singer than he would have been if he stuck with the same musical persona.
So, in conclusion- it's worth buying, especially for the out of print "Starsailor" and "Blue Afternoon" songs, but be prepared, it's a real tease, and as one reviewer said, it's not a "best of compilation," it's an introduction to and a sampler of Tim's music. It's function is to give you a reason to buy MORE of his albums, not less.

5 out of 5 stars Marvelous introduction to an utterly unique performer.......2003-05-11

First, almost no one is going to like everything that Tim Buckley did. That is not a reflection of his talent, but of the extraordinary diversity of his musical output. Tim Buckley was one of rock's greatest experimentalists, and embraced such a vast number of styles during his tragically short career, that very few will find all of his attempts congenial. This collection does a great job of collecting the high points from each period in his career. Many will prefer the earlier songs, where he appears more as a folk troubadour. Myself, I am more of a fan of the later, more challenging songs. Best of all, this album features both the original version of the amazing "Song to the Siren" off STAR SAILOR, as well as the rare acoustic version of the same song from the Monkees TV show.

Buckley possessed one of the truly great voices in the history of rock, with a range that was surpassed possibly only by Roy Orbison. He not only had a remarkable range, but also could change the timbre of his voice. One listening to the two versions of "Song to the Siren" noted above, if he or she didn't know that Buckley was singing both, might find it hard to believe that both were by the same person. He was always a tenor, but he seemed to be able to kick into a high tenor that sounded almost female at times. At times his voice was thin, at times almost like a woodwind instrument as he would hold out a note.

Buckley was also a gifted songwriter, as this album amply demonstrates. Given all this, one might be led to ask, why wasn't he bigger than he was? The answer primarily lies in his diversity. He did too many things, sang in too many styles, and as a result was never able to really nail down a target audience.

It's good to have the clean-vowelled, fresh-voiced Cambridge Singers back in action with composer John Rutter, who demonstrates once again his considerable talents as a choral director. Here, he also had his work cut out arranging 15 of the tracks (and composing one other). Divided up into various categories, such as "the Eucharist" and "folk hymns," this album will delight the confirmed hymn enthusiast, provided that he or she doesn't insist on the pure, as-written product. Rutter's reworkings range from the bold and brassy (occasionally deliciously over the top--what would Martin Luther have thought of the naughtiness in "A mighty fortress is our God"?) to those of harp-accompanied simplicity, not least in the charming lines of "Be thou my vision." Several tasteful descants are models of their kind. There are some surprises at which to chuckle. For example, not the expected brass and organ job on "We plough the fields and scatter," but a dainty, tripping harp accompaniment to the familiar melody, such as Haydn might have wedded to a Scottish folksong. Occasional numbers might be too saccharine for some tastes, but there are cunningly placed samples of Gregorian chant, Tallis, and Gibbons to provide contrast and cleanse the palate. --Andrew Green

Having listened to this twice... It is difficult to find words for something so Glorious. It doesn't almost hurt, but I almost exploded in heavenly rapture several times.
You will need to get two. It is not music that you will want to keep to yourself.

'The hymns heard on this disc span over 15 centuries of the history of Christian Europe, and have been chosen simply to make up a varied program which can be pleasant to hear.' Some items are accompanied by organ, some by harp where a lighter sound was more appropriate. Some are unaccompanied as in the Gregorian hymns, and five of the grandest hymns are given festival arrangements using brass, timpani, percussion and organ. Although the perspective of this album is Anglican,it must be noted that the Anglican hymn tradition has been notably eclectic. Hymnody is forever changing. 'This album does NOT attempt to reflect the most recent changes-the emergence of pop and folk-influenced worship songs and choruses has been well taken care of elsewhere, and time alone will tell whether there is any lasting worth in this most drastic upheaval of worship style.' Therefore, it is timely to reflect upon the immense riches of hymns built up over so many centuries, when they are at great risk of neglect. John Rutter has produced an amazing number of arrangements as well as original songs, and they are all first-rate. Choirs throughout the world (who are skilled enough to sing them)take great pleasure in working with his selections, and audiences, regardless of listening experience seem to enjoy them. They are tuneful, clever and unusual!!!
The Cambridge Singers number : 10 female sopranos,2 male and 4 female altos, 7 tenors and 8 basses. They sing extremely well with clear consonents and well-shaped vowels and plenty of gusto. I miss the boy sopranos that usually sing in the British choirs, but that's only a personal preference, and it surely is not Rutter's preference, because I have never known him to make use of them. A truly inspiring recording, nonetheless.

Rutter has won many fans throughout the world for his passionate, creative yet tasteful contributions to church music. Here is a hymn collection with several traditional choices along with Rutter originals.

Several comprise Rutter's remakes, which is most cases are very diginified and not at all distractive to the thrust of the original. The orchestration is superb, and the Cambridge Singers of course provide outstanding choral might.

Well worth consideration to the church music collection.

i was 1st introduced to john rutters music on a radio program... when i 1st heard the arrangement of christ the lord is risen today presented in this cd i pictured a grand celebration of the solemn mass of the resurection of our lord and pictured in particular the grand procession i pictured this being celebrated... this hymn and cd does as best as humanly possible represent the great glory of god and does as its title suggests sing with the heavens and for you fellow traditionalists this is a strongly recomended cd

The hymns of SING, YE HEAVENS represent 1500 years of music in the Christian church. Pure and rich are these hymns by the Cambridge Singers with their perfect diction that leaves nothing for improvement and their tone quality that envelops the listener. The beauty of the harp, the organ, and the brass adds to the pleasure this CD brings to the listener's ear and heart.
