    4 out of 5 stars A Glimpse Of What Could've Been.......2003-06-29

This is an outstanding record. Unfortunately, only about 137 people ever heard it. Evidently, at the time all anyone would accept from Setzer was rockabilly in one form or another. Thus, Setzer is now rich beyond his wildest dreams and we have the Brian Setzer Orchestra instead. But this particular album reveals a completely different side of this very talented musician and songwriter -- one more kindred to Bruce Springsteen or John Mellencamp. No, it's not as festive as "Jump Jive & Wail," but it's more introspective and more insightful. The band he has for this recording sounds tight, the production is top-notch, and his voice sounds better than it ever had before and has since (which is saying a lot because the guy can sing).

In short, due to a lack of commercial success, you will never hear any of these songs on the radio (or live, for that matter). So buy this, pop it in your car CD player, turn off your cell phone and go on a road trip.

Maybe someday it won't have to be an import, but even still it is worth the price.

3 out of 5 stars Decent effort that got no support from the record company.......2003-12-19

Having followed Brian Setzer's Stray Cats career from a somewhat bemused distance, I didn't expect all that much from his first true solo effort. Back then I used MTV as background music when I was down to crunch time on whatever paper I had due, and it was during one of these marathon typing sessions that I first heard and saw "The Knife Feels Like Justice". Expecting more along the lines of the Cats, I was shocked to find that he'd jettisoned that image and sound for more straight ahead rock. Like I said, shocking, but by the first guitar break I was hooked. Bought the album later that afternoon. The rest of the album doesn't quite live up to the title track, and there isn't anything I'd consider a must have for Setzer fans, but only on "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" does it fall flat. A decent album and a surprisingly tough find in cd form.

1 out of 5 stars His Worst Ever output.......2002-11-05

I am a huge Brian Setzer fan. I own everything that the Stray Cats and their three members have ever put out. This is by far the worst album that anyone from the band has recorded. BSO, 68 CBS and even the "Live Nude Guitars" album were far better than this. To say that this is even worse than Brian's Bloodless Pharaohs stuff really shows just how shockingly poor this is. I owned it on vinyl when it first came out, and due to my wanting all of his output, I now own it on CD. That is the only reason anyone should buy this - if you are a collector. Buy It, Put it with your other CD's and leave it there. No other action necessary.

      5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2002-09-14

Back in '86, I picked up the cassette version of this recording and promptly wore it out. This is one of my all-time favorite recordings and I can honestly say that every cut is a keeper (how often can that be said in this day of cd's with one or two good cuts and packed to the rafters with junk filler?) The title track is the gem among gems with "Chains Around Your Heart" and "Haunted River" other standouts. This music really defies pigeonholing into any one particular genre (and isn't that refreshing these days), coming closest to pure, American roots rock. The music is ageless, sounding as fresh and new today and it was in 1986. The guitar work by Setzer is top-notch, as is usual of him and his voice has the perfect blend of smooth and grit for these songs. The music will quickly embed itself in your head and not let go. I have enjoyed his work throughout his career, from the Stray Cats to his foray into swing music, but in my opinion, this is his crowning achievement (so far) and I hope he strays back into this style of music.

3 out of 5 stars Strictly for the Brian Setzer fan.......2002-05-02

I'm a big fan of Brian Setzer, so I felt my collection would not be complete without this solo project. As a fan I would say it's okay, but if I were a more casual fan of his I would probably pass on this one. None of the songs really stand out and it is very different from anything he has released before or since. I guess he just needed to get it out of his system before going back to rocking hard.

1 out of 5 stars THE KNIFE WOULD BE JUSTICE.......2002-03-03

I have never been a "big" STRAY CATS fan, but I liked their music, and when Brian stepped out on his own, I had to pick up his cd to see if he would follow the success of his first band. The Knife Feels Like Justice, is a big let down. I bought the cd, not knowing what I was going to get, and what I got was a disappointment. The songs have a good beat, but the vocals and the material, is lacking. There are some descent songs on board, the title track, Chains Around Your Heart, and Bobby's Back. But the rest are really poor. If your a "cats" fan, you will be let down, this is not his better work
