3 out of 5 stars Decent.......2007-07-23

I went out and bought this CD after hearing the song "If You're Gonna Leave" on the radio. I was hoping the CD would have more songs like this one. Overall, the CD is good. I like half the songs and the other half I can live without. They just don't do much for me and leave me feeling a little bland.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing Music, Lyrics, and Production.......2007-07-21

Too many times with solo break-out artists, the first album tends to sound forced and overproduced. With the exception of a few tracks, the production quality is excellent and remains understated on this album. The focus remains were it should with a singer/songwriter, on the lyrics and the guitar. I was fortunate to see Emerson play most of these songs live in January and was pleased that I didn't have to wade through excessive backing vocals and session players to recognize the songs on the first listen.

The high points of the album include the acoustic song, "Green Hills Race For California", the first single, "If You're Gonna Leave", and the awesome lyrics of "Flyin'" and "When She Loves You". This CD may not leave my player for weeks.

If you enjoyed the band Tonic for the lyrical depth and vocals, you will not be disappointed with this album.

5 out of 5 stars a brilliant artist -a brilliant album.......2007-07-17

This album has completely touched me. Emerson was incredible as the lead of Tonic, but his solo CD outshines all the rest. To every true music lover out there- take some time and listen to this incredible album! I promise you won't be let down!

Before Camper Van Beethoven, no "punk" band would've thought to blend Eastern European folk rhythms with Tex-Mex, ska, reggae, psych-rock, punk-rock, pop-rock and...well, whatever else was out there. This five-disc box set features all the early CVB albums on compact disc. Their first outing, Telephone Free Landslide Victory, sounds as unique and fresh today as it did in 1985. Mostly remembered for the sublimely ridiculous "Take the Skinheads Bowling" and their take on Black Flag's "Wasted," it set the bar high for subsequent releases. The band followed the oddball masterpiece with more cleverness and irresistible charm on II & III. Dabbling in Mekons country-punk turf for the first half, they slid into a wry psychedelia in the second. It really is two albums in one. The band's self-titled third outing found the California boys scratching their heads out loud, wondering exactly what to do next, and not arriving at a consensus. It's an adventurous jumble, with a few really outstanding tracks. Also in the box is the Vantiquities collection of various 1980s recordings, originally released in 1993 after their two-record stint with Virgin Records and a live collection, Greatest Hits Played Faster, which opens with a magisterial "All Her Favorite Fruit" and ends, appropriately, with a sad-sounding "One of These Days." --Lorry Fleming

Album Description

Closing in on 20 years after their formation, Camper Van Beethoven proudly announce the release of a box set entitled "Cigarettes & Carrot Juice: The Santa Cruz Years." "Cigarettes and Carrot Juice" contains 4 albums of classic recordings dating primarily from 1984-1987, the prime years of the bands existence in Santa Cruz, California, a sleepy coastal college town which proved to be an idyllic place for the prolific young band to woodshed their talents. Camper Van Beethoven are looked upon as one of the seminal "college rock" bands of the 1980s, predating the 1990s wave of micro-marketed alternative rock. A wildly diverse mixture of personalities and music, "Cigarettes and Carrot Juice" features the work of a unique band as they captured their voice on outings for small independents such as Independent Project Records, Rough Trade, and their own Pitch-A-Tent label.

5 out of 5 stars A few details..........2007-04-10

This set gives us the first three CVB albums as originally released. Recent reissues have new track sequences, with bonus material mixed in. This may not be a terrible idea, but I don't plan on buying them.

The Vantiquities disc is an interesting collection of outtakes etc between both sides of the "Vampire Can Mating Oven" EP (1987). The new, expanded Vantiquities adds five demos from the "Beloved/Pie" era, but the disc in this box has MUCH better sound, all the way through. What's going on, guys?

The live album is neither here nor there. I saw them a few years back (here in Santa Cruz) and they sounded a hell of a lot better than this. Then again, they've had 15 years to improve, and they don't hate each other anymore.

I love this band. This is a great way to get the first three albums in their original form, with the original artwork, at a decent price.

[Note for fanatics: "We're a Bad Trip" is the faster, more polished one. The earlier take is now a bonus track on the 04 edition of "II&III".]

5 out of 5 stars Great Album,Too bad You cant buy it from Amazon :( :(.......2005-03-21

My wife tried ordering this item thru a Amazon listed seller (caiman) December the 10th it was due to ship out in 3 days (for a x-mas present nonetheless), by end of January it had not shipped. I cancelled our order with caiman and tried to order thru AMAZON itself the same day Feb 3rd i believe. Here it is March the 20th. No nothing , just an endless extending wait. Apparently AMAZON & their sellers feel they can list items they dont , wont and cant stock. Dont waste your time. I just cancelled my order and bought it on E-BAY , it will ship tommorow. Forget Amazon, or unless you like being blown off endlessly by email with no LIVE person to talk to, then by all means order this thru Amazon (or Caiman!). I prefer to spend my money else-where, this has really soured me.

5 out of 5 stars Best Camper Van Beethoven CD's EVER!!!!.......2004-06-03

5 great CD's with great songs like "Crossing Over" or "Mao Reminices About his Days in Southern China". The songs on Greatest Hits Played Faster, the live CD, sound better than the recordings on Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart or Key Lime Pie. It is relatively cheap for a 5 CD set.

5 out of 5 stars Vampire Can Mating Oven.......2003-09-19

In my wallet I keep a "want list" of music and movies for all of those times I find myself in a store and can't remember that album or movie I wanted. One of the first entries is "Camper Van Beethoven--First three albums". Finally, this wonderful boxed set is available. The collection includes, as stated, all of the band's work from the Santa Cruz years. The CD cases are cardboard miniature reproductions of the original album jackets and the fourth and fifth discs are rarities and a live disc. If you remember the fun of their music and haven't heard it for a while, get this set. It brought back memories of a less responsible time and the music, it seems, hasn't been remastered leaving the vocals slightly buried which was always a part of their sound I liked. They could entertain you with light ska instrumentals or rock with catchy guitar riffs. The extensive liner notes are interesting too, except the part where the writer tries to defend the band's selling out as not selling out but simply wanting to sign to a bigger label to make their music more available. No problem here with selling out if you don't change your music to do it; and that's exactly what they did. I feel their major label stuff just isn't as fun as the early stuff..... and Cracker was horrible. If you remember why you liked Camper Van Beethoven in the first place, buy this set.

4 out of 5 stars I got some funny ideas of what sounds good........2003-03-14

Last year a friend of mine invited me to see Camper Van Beethoven on their recent limited reunion tour, and although I only had Key Lime Pie, their last full album of new studio material, I agreed. While still a pretty good record, their set proved "Key Lime Pie" to just scratch the surface of their musical diversity. Basic guitar pop songs would rest beside russian can can ska instrumentals, straight country ballads, hardcore punk satire and power-book enhanced Fleetwood Mac covers. Needless to say, I was intrigued by their earlier releases, and the next time I had enough cash to blow, I found myself the proud owner of this box set. Although the first disk is the best in my opinion, all three of the original albums show a creative, clever, unique, and musically talented band at work. In addition, the rarities colection camper vantiquities, despite being a compilation of 3 years worth of material, doesn't feel any more or less cohesive than the rest of their albums, a credit to their freewheeling style, and is far less mixed than one would expect from such a compilation. Finally disc five is a live album mostly drawn from what was to be their final tour in europe, which focuses on material from their two major label albums. While a bit dissapointingly slow for something called "Greatest Hits Played Faster", it still captures some fine perofmances of the band, and is a nice extra, though probably not something you'd want to buy the whole box set for if you already own the rest of the albums. All in all, if you're curious about the band or just want to hear some challenging but catchy diverse rock music, this is a great place to start.

Maybe it was the recording environs of Nassau, Bahamas, that made this such a laidback effort. Maybe it was the presence of trusty Clapton pals Albert Lee, Ry Cooder, and Donald "Duck" Dunn. Money is a relaxed collection of simple songs summed up by the album's sole hit, "I've Got a Rock and Roll Heart." Old-time boogie-woogie and '50s rock is the key inspiration on tracks such as "Slow Down Linda" (which even sounds like a second "Lay Down Sally"), the Eddie Cochran-esque "Man in Love" and "The Shape You're In," which features a nice lead tradeoff between Clapton and Lee. Covers of the Albert King staple "Crosscut Saw" and Sleepy John Estes's "Everybody Oughta Make a Change" boast the album's best blues fills and flurries, while the freight-train jump blues of Johnny Otis's "Crazy Country Hop" closes out the low-key LP with something more resembling a bang. --James Rotondi

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Eric and his sidemen .......2007-07-11

Short Story; Five great songs and no major turds...easily Eric's strongest outing of the 1980s. Very well remastered, too!

Long Story; The chorus of Crazy Country Hop features they lyrics "Ooh-weee, oh-oh...Oooh la, la, let's rock and roll". A brief discussion broke out among Eric and his sidemen about whether these profoundly fruity lyrics compromised their manhood. They were interrupted by the phone outside the control room. Eric answers and then turns to his band, "Hey guys, my smokin' hot supermodel wife Pattie Boyd is callng from the $1.50/minute car-phone in my Lamborghini Countach. She's in the McDonald's drive-thru and wants to know what you guys want on your Big Macs." Needless to say, it was then decided by unanimous vote that the Oooh la-la lyrics were not a problem for men in their situation.

Don't even think about bothering me with a rant about how profoundly inaccurate my story is.

3 out of 5 stars A solid latter-day effort from one of EC's transitional periods........2007-05-11

By this point in Eric's career, his legacy as one of rock 'n' roll's all time great guitarists was secure and in tact. He had traveled a long way since the so-called "power trio" extended jams of the Cream era, and had little to prove in that regard. So, he ventured off in search of a more pastoral approach to his music. Between 1975-80 he exploited the growth of the country cross-over phenomenon in popular music by donning a checkered vest and playing songs like "Tulsa Time". This was an astute move seeing that neither punk nor disco was a viable option for him at the time. However, the country troubadour schtick did eventually wear thin, at a time when popular music was transitioning away from guitar-based music in favor of drum machines, synthesizers, and guys with too much mousse in their hair. Eric took the high road into adult contemporary music, choosing to play rather light and relaxed pop songs typically built around a simple blues or country guitar riff (see "Everybody Oughta Make A Change", which has a feel to it reminiscent of the "Barney Miller" TV theme). He would continue to refine this formula with mixed results until 1989's "Journeyman" release, which was clearly the apex of this period (although "Behind the Sun" and "August" each had their moments). Additionally, he began to approach his singing as something more than an afterthought, as is evidenced on songs such as "Pretty Girl".
This record finds Clapton seemingly in a peaceful, mature state of mind. So, for a relaxed (albeit not particularly engaging) listen, try this one out in the car. It sounds good in surround sound, and might prevent road-rage.

2 out of 5 stars Low period for God........2007-01-24

Most of these songs just sound like they've thrown together some last minute weak major to minor chord progressions. Clapton seems to be going through the motions. Apart from the Sleepy John Estes track "Everybody ought to change" there's nothing inspirational. Eric's version of "Crosscut Saw" is adequate but he repeats just one predictable Albert King phrase throughout. My goodness, even Albert, who was always accused of using three licks, was more adventurous than someone who was bestowed with the title "GOD". "Slow Down Linda" and "Man In Love" sound more like Chas 'n" Dave songs and Eric was still influenced by that duo.
Skip this one and move on to another earlier Clapton album or better still listen to him with "Cream".

4 out of 5 stars Money & Cigarettes a worthy disc........2006-10-04

Ok folks here it goes. The year was 1983 and comercialism was still going strong. Most groups put out music every year.In the seventies you had to wait a life time{so it seems} I've got a rock n roll heart bellowed from radio stations. It sold the album. Its amazing when I look back and bought records on one single.Sometimes it was a good album and other times it was like getting dental work done without novacane. This album is laid back but enjoyable. Its not Slowhand but its not reptile either.Eric might of been relaxing on a tropical island somewhere but money was flowing in just from that song alone. The song man overboard is a little cheezey but doesn't kill the album.Crazy Country Hop is always a treat thanks to the nutty lyrics and music by J.Otis.The good thing about today as I mentioned earlier was that you can sample music so you know what you're in for.I sampled this and bought it.Your call!

3 out of 5 stars Too laid back for me.......2005-11-18

What you have here is Claptons' first release on Duck Records, which is a division of Reprise. It is his first album without Robert Stigwood.
The songs on here are rockers, but in my mind dont have the drive like Layla or some other songs he has done. There is alot of Rockabilly guitar with some good guitar licks.
What is absent are the blues songs we have become to know and love. This CD is more the Rock side of Eric Clapton.
This is not one of his better efforts, but not one of his worst either.
The songs on this CD worth mentioning are Everybody Oughta Make A Change, Rock and Roll Heart and the very pretty love ballad Pretty Girl. Pretty girl is one of his better ballads of his career. This CD is primarily for collectors like myself.

Album Description

Jarmusch films always deliver an eclectic soundtrack, and Coffee And Cigarettes is no exception. The music plays in the background as you're watching, but in the forefront when you're remembering. Using different genres from the 50s, 60s and 70s, the music in the film creates a hip and absorbing soundtrack to a new classic film from the master of indie cinema.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Music Makes The Movie.......2004-07-02

There are directors you can count on to put together a good soundtrack--if not a good movie--like Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, and Aki Kaurismaki. Jim Jarmusch earned his stripes from the start. Who can forget "I Put a Spell on You" (Screamin' Jay Hawkins) in "Stranger Than Paradise" (or Neil Young's guitar score for "Dead Man")? It makes the movie! "Coffee and Cigarettes" is an omnibus film made over the course of several years. It features a few musicians, such as RZA (of the Wu-Tang Clan) and the White Stripes, and some are even on the soundtrack, such as Tom Waits and Iggy Pop. This is just a great compilation of great music--and the movie isn't bad either.

4 out of 5 stars A wonderfully mixed bag.......2004-06-02

I remember Stranger Than Paradise being hailed as a masterpiece, and being so intensely bored with most of it that I refused to see any more Jarmusch movies. But luckily when a friend wanted to see this I broke my promise, and loved a lot of it. Parts of it, of course, were boring, but it didn't have the long static segments that Jarmusch's other movies occasionally have - and it didn't continually assume that showing the audience something bizarre and surreal is the same thing as entertaining them, with the exception of the Jack and Meg White from the White Stripes talking about a Tesla coil.

Which brings me to the soundtrack. All throughout the coffee houses in the movie, songs are playing on the jukebox. It's hard to hear most of them, and except for Crimson and Clover and the two versions of Louie Louie I didn't recognize many of them. There is an emphasis on tunes from the 60s and 70s and a general sort of fun garage rock party vibe (Iggy Pop, Parliament) to most of the tracks, which make me a little disappointed that there aren't any White Stripes songs on here -Jarmusch's tastes clearly lie in that direction, since Screamin' Jay Hawkins's "I Put a Spell On You" was featured in Stranger Than Paradise.

If you're already familiar with a lot of this music, this CD probably isn't worth getting. But it's unlikely that many people are, considering that it ranges from funk to jazz to Mahler (a beautiful song, maybe the loveliest he ever wrote). Like many cooler-than-thou directors, Jarmusch only seems to let himself get sentimental when it comes to music, and delivers many of his most emotional moments through songs instead of onscreen. It's not always clear if he's being serious (or, let's say, totally committed) when he writes his movies, but his soundtracks are a labor of love - sort of like Tarantino's, but dipping into an even widen pool.

One of the nicest phrases in the movie is Tesla's idea that the world is a conductor of acoustical resonance. What does it mean? I dunno. Maybe you can listen to the soundtrack and figure it out.

Starring Ben and Casey Affleck, Courtney Love, Martha Plimpton, and Christina Ricci, among others, 200 Cigarettes is a romantic comedy set on New Year's Eve 1981 in New York City's East Village. Supporting the film is a representative collection of late-'70s and early-'80s new-wave pop-rockers. The Ramones nail down the ferocious end of the spectrum ("I Don't Care"), but the emphasis is on straight pop with Nick Lowe ("Cruel to Be Kind"), the Cars ("Just What I Needed"), Joe Jackson ("It's Different for Girls") and the Go-Go's ("Our Lips Are Sealed"). Roxy Music deliver the sensuous "More Than This." Dire Straits' epic "Romeo and Juliet" is a tad out of place among the slam-bang pop-rock. Modern rockers Girls Against Boys effectively cover Earth, Wind and Fire's "Boogie Wonderland." Blondie contribute "In the Flesh" and a special megamix of "Rapture," plus two newer songs from their comeback effort. --Rob O'Connor

4 out of 5 stars Why doesn't Amazon post artist names???.......2005-11-06

I've always enjoyed Harvey Danger's rendition of "Save It For Later", The Cars' classic "Just What I Needed" and Dire Straits' "Romeo and Juliet." Today, I checked to see what else is on the album, but, to my dismay, Amazon posts only the song titles and NOT the artists. This is not particularly helpful, is it? Therefore, I took the liberty of looking these up on another website and posting them below.

-Elvis Costello---( So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love And Understanding

-Dire Straits---Romeo And Juliet

-The Go-Go's---Our Lips Are Sealed

-Blondie---Blondie Medley: Rapture Exit Loud Allstar Rock Remix

-Nick Lowe---Cruel To Be Kind

-Blondie---In The Flesh

-The Cars---Just What I Needed

-Harvey Danger---Save It For Later

-Bow Wow Wow---I Want Candy

-The Ramones---I Don't Care

-Girls Against Boys---Boogie Wonderland

-Joe Jackson---It's Different For Girls

-B-Movie---Nowhere Girl

-Roxy Music---More Than This

-Kool & the Gang---Ladies Night

5 out of 5 stars Fun Soundtrack!.......2005-09-25

Never saw the movie, but I found this sndtrk in a bargain bin and took it with me on my road trip back home. Super variety! No problem falling asleep in the car (I was singing!) I believe one or two from Devo assembled the score. No wonder it's sooooo cool!

Just for the record, some reviewers have it wrong. The song "Save It For Later" is by the English Beat; NOT Buddy Holly or General Public!! Sheesh. Check out "What Is Beat?" Great stuff there.

3 out of 5 stars 200 Cigarettes Soundtrack Review: A good few songs.......2005-07-08

The reason that I bought this soundtrack was to get Harvey Danger's "Save it for later"--great song. This album also has "Cruel to be kind" and a few other great songs you can sing to; however, overall would I recommend going out and buying the entire album if you don't need to--NO. Try and download the songs you like separately.

3 out of 5 stars Why I didn't buy it (or why I would have)..........2004-12-16

I have sooo many 80's songs (and love them all), that I didn't need another compilation, except there was a brief scene in the movie where two eastern men are riffing on the surf song "Riptide" on sitars... I loved that and would have bought this disc if it had been included. However, if you're looking for a decent 80s mix, this is a good place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Better Than The Movie.......2004-08-22

What can I say, this soundtrack is alot better than the film. I recomend that you get this soundtrack. It has a lot of good 80's song in it.

5 out of 5 stars Torch music of the highest quality.......2005-01-24

Two albums from 1958 filled with love songs from an even earlier era sung by what I regard as the finest torch singer of the lot - that's what you get here. eri knew her limitations and worked within them, singing only ballads with only a little variation in tempo, which won't suit everybody but I love it. On these albums, Jeri is backed by an orchestra, which manages to restrain itself nicely.

Drawing on songs composed by some of America's finest songwriters of the first half of the last century (Cole Porter, Hoagy Carmichael, Irving Berlin, Yip Harburg and others), these two albums feature a few famous songs such as Lazy bones and Yesterdays, but however famous or obscure the songs, Jeri's performances are impeccable.

There are so many great songs here but among the highlights are Down with love, Ridin' high, I like the likes of you, Spring will be a little late this year, Deep in a dream and Maybe I love you too much.

If you are a fan of Jeri's music, or if you enjoy the music of Peggy Lee, Julie London, June Christie, Gogi Grant and other similar singers, you'll love this twofer.

5 out of 5 stars First and Last.......2001-06-15

"Southern Breeze" was the first of Jeri's three albums on Roulette, a great Marty Paich-arranged album with a scorching vocal on "Porgy" and a lot else going for it. "Coffee..." was the last Roulette album, arranged hauntingly by Lennie Hayton, who really knew how to showcase Jeri's voice and style. This is one of the truly great torch albums, a legend in its time. Both albums add up to great listening and you'll play them over and over because there's so much to hear each time in Jeri's interpretations.

2 out of 5 stars Two stars for two great songs.......2007-03-28

She's a fine pianist and at times compelling composer, but the overproduction and overall pretentiousness is too much. On the plus-side, we have a true stylist in the sonic tradition of Joni Mitchell (to a degree) and Annie Haslam [Renaissance] to a greater degree.
The writing is subtle, though, as mundane, everyday objects, take on multi-layers of meaning - sofas, phones, cigarettes. Still, those over-arrangements weigh down any buoyancy.
Back to my review title: "Beautiful Invisible" is a phenomenal success, transcending comparison with the above-named/or any other artists, and the Bonus Track, "Jigsaw" has the straight-ahead, rocking thing going that just about all the tracks should have had.
Pete Townshend on acoustic guitar (?) - how about a partial album re-do with Pete on acoustic guitar and Rachel on acoustic keyboard - and up-front vocals on all the tracks.
(Maybe same the instrumental "Lament" for the CD-single B-side. Nice work, though, Jonathan Williams).

before I ever have to listen to this CD again

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-03-16

I must be listening to a different CD to some of these other reviewers? Rachel Fuller is clearly a talented musician but her strengths seems to lie in arranging and orchestration rather than as a composer and artist. The songs are listenable, but not particularly memorable. The vocals are competent but not special and the whole album drifts along in a pleasant, but not very interesting way. More background music to a dinner party than something which commands your attention. I'm not sure that the Tori Amos/ Alanis Morisette comparisons are fair, as both artists have much more of an edge. Think Dido in uninspired mood and I think that you would be nearer the mark. Overall a disappointing album, given the money that has clearly been thrown at the production. If there is a second album I hope that it is stronger.

5 out of 5 stars Superb artistic triumph! All songs are a beauty!!.......2005-11-05

Rachell Fuller s' first collection of songs is a complete artistic triumph. It is very rare this days, to hear a "first" cd for a "new" artist, of this caliber and quality. It is a great collection of songs; all of them are excelent and leave you wanting for more. The English version for this cd has a couple of different songs and mixes. It is unfair to say or write that (as other listener wrote), since Pete Townshend and The Who2 are all over the cd as a backin band, she is what this cd is. No, if you know something about music and production, you recognize inmediatly, a great artist, and she absolutely is. So Rachell, if your read this and the "other" reviews, do not take the bad ones to hard. Follow your heart and keep up the good work with your loved ones and friends. You are a good team. I will see you on WhoTV and i will buy a couple of cds to give my friends and spread the word. My only regret is not having any more my radio show (i had one for 15 years), so i can spread the music to all listeners.
My favorite song is "Beautifull Invisible" and also the title track and "In the mirror".

I have heard the new songs posted at your site and Pete Townshend s' and i hope that very soon your new cd will be with us.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2005-10-23

Get ready to fall in love with Rachel Fuller's clear, perfectly beautiful voice and her creative songwriting. She does not fit easily into a box, which is one reason I love her music. Rachel is classically trained as a pianist and is a talented arranger and songwriter, and she can rock. As my teenage son says of her song "Spin": "She's heavy as hell!"

On this album, my favorites are each very different from each other. I love "Into My Heart" with its catchy chorus, the aforementioned "Spin" which is mesmerizing, "Imperfection" which will bring tears to your eyes, "Happy to Be Sad," and all the other tracks. Rachel has more songs to share. Rachel's demos are better than almost anything you can hear on the radio these days.

I think if you are someone who loves music, you'll love Rachel's songs. Her voice sometimes reminds me of Sarah McLachlan, she has that crystal clear, beautiful tone and perfect pitch. In the title song, you can hear the Joni Mitchell influence, but Rachel puts her own touch in every song she sings. She surrounds herself with the best musicians, and the production here is brilliant.

Give her a listen, you'll find yourself ordering this CD.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars an incredibly great CD single.......2005-04-14

What a thrill rush it was for me listening to Oasis' exhiliarting debut album "Definitely Maybe" album back in March of 1995. By all means, I was eager to hear more from these blokes, and imagine my surprise when I came across "Cigarettes & Alcohol", an absolute gem of a CD single. At this point, it's widely confirmed that Oasis' CD singles are a huge part of their legacy--their b-sides were typically just as great as the songs that made it onto the official albums--but back in '95, I didn't really know any better, and I just picked this up starving for more Oasis material. The title track was the 4th & final A-side culled from "Definitely Maybe", and with its T. Rex-derived riff, it's a great example of the exciting rock & roll blast Oasis were serving up so regularly back then. Then for the b-sides which were then unavailable on album... They totally tear it up with their live cover of "I Am the Walrus" which has a great Liam vocal and an extended jam section with impressive guitar heroics (did Noel actually play all that stuff?!?); call me nuts, but in terms of sheer power & enjoyment, it blows away the Beatles studio version which suffers from botched execution. Then you get a pair of Noel Gallagher originals--he delivers another soaring rock 'ballad' with the epic "Listen Up" which is in the same league as "Live Forever", and the disc closes with the hard-charging, wistful rocker "Fade Away". In the end, this disc, which runs nearly 24 minutes, really does have the feel of a genuine EP--Oasis used the CD single format as an opportunity to offer up more greatness as opposed to something tossed off merely to satisfy record company obligations. All 3 of the b-sides subsequently turned up on their 1998 b-sides compilation "The Masterplan" (although "I Am the Walrus" appears to have been edited/ shortened) but "Cigarettes & Alcohol" remains an incredibly great CD single in its own right.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST Oasis Single.......1998-08-02

It starts with the A-side, "Cigarettes and Alcohol" good, solid rock-and-roll. The B-Sides are even better. The cover of "I am the Walrus" recorded live is simply awesome. At eight minutes long, it becomes an acid jam after about three. Next, you get "Listen Up" quite possibly the best song Noel Gallagher has ever written. After that, it's "Fade Away" which I feel is sort of a rock-ballad companion to another song Oasis did called "D'Yer Wanna Be A Spaceman". This EP is definitely for the true Oasis fan and even for those with a casual affection towards the five lads from Manchester.
