4 out of 5 stars Applause for Applause!.......2006-07-13

I recomend this cd to all theater fans. Even the ones who love a great, toe tapping score. The song they sing in titled Applause can be seen in the Bonus Performances on the DVD titled Broadways Lost Treasueres. That is how I first heard of Applause. It was very entertaining!

3 out of 5 stars Lauren Bacall !.......2005-07-09

Based on the classic movie "All About Eve", Lauren Bacall won a Tony for her performance in this great musical.

Best tracks include:

But Alive
Applause [Bonnie Franklin of "One Day At A Time" fame!]
Something Greater

Not all the songs are great, but totally worth the buy!

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2004-04-01

Love the CD ( I have had the vinyl recording ever since it came out), but wish it could be released on Video or DVD(does anyone out there know if this will ever happen?). I saw the television production with Lauren Bacall and Larry Hagman back in the early 1970's and saw an amateur production of it here in Melbourne as well and having always loved the whole concept of the movie, I feel that it transferred well to the stage.

3 out of 5 stars Welcome CD edition of the original Broadway cast album.......2004-01-17

First... a request to people reviewing stage cast albums, Several reviews refer to these recordings as "soundtracks."

WRONG!!!!

"Soundtrack" recordings are records/cds transfered from from movies ONLY.

Live theatre does not use pre-recorded "soundtracks" - the casts perform live on stage and these "original cast recordings" are made in recording studios and designed for home listening.
PLEASE.... maintain your credibility by using the correct term!

************

Finally, after years of negotiation Decca Broadway is making the 1970 Tony winning musical APPLAUSE avaialble on Cd. Was it worth the wait? Well, yes and no. APPLAUSE is one of those late 60's musicals adapted from a hit play/novel/movie and offering lots of glitz and energy to cover up the deficiencies of the show itself.

Star Lauren Bacall provided the "star" quality though she has no real singing voice but as an actress she rises above it bringing the character to vivid life. Len Cariou sings well as Bacall's boyfriend but has very little to do.

Bacall gets the key gems and with two major exceptions any of the numbers in which she does not appear can be ignored. The first exception is the lively title song - a tribute to the power of applause. It has almost nothing to do with the plot but still stopped the show nightly. The other,is a dramatic soliloque for Penny Fuller in the (virtually) non-singing role of Eve: "One Hallowe'en." This is Eve's big moment to really show her true colours and Fuller makes the most of it. Missing from the recording - becasue it is a dialogue scene - is the following moments when Eve recieves humiliating comeuppance.

The original Lp release was done by ABC records and had an annoying "boxy" sound quality that has not been corrected on the cd. The very short selection has been filled out with demo recordings by composer Charles Strouse and a couple of the cut songs sound quite interesting. Packaging is up to Decca Broadway's usual high standards.

5 out of 5 stars lauren.......2003-12-04

i have a copy of this recording on LP, and have enjoyed it for approx 25 yrs. couldn't wait for the cd. bought it the first time i saw it.
i am wondering if anyone has seen the tv production of APPLAUSE starring LAUREN broadcast circa 1974 on tv? and is there any possibility of obtaining a copy on anything? the production was FANTISTIC, to say the least!!!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars 7 of Jonathan Richman's greatest songs.......2006-02-26

Ok, I'll admit it. I haven't heard this cd. However, I do own the lp (yes, vinyl). I haven't heard the 4 bonus trax although I know Astral Plane from the first Modern Lovers album. Jonathan does have a full rock band behind him on this album. It's fairly gentle rock music, not hard rockin', not as hard as the famous first album (J.R. and the Modern Lovers).

Here's those great 7 songs: 1. Abdul & Cleopatra is Jonathan at his story telling best doing what he often does, telling a love story. He's begun his sorta silly, innocent period of the later 70's and it works on these 7 songs, no question. I don't remember 2. (She's Gonna) Respect Me or 3. Lover Please. However, 4. Affection might be my favorite song by him ever. It's long, maybe 5 minutes. It tells us that affection is a key part of existance in a very beautiful way. I've never heard a song like it. He can get indulgent sometimes but on this song he totally gets it right. Very emotional really.

5. Buzz Buzz Buzz is another pretty silly song. However, it's Jonathan at his most innocent and that's saying something. Real sweet.

6. Back In Your Life is another song that sticks to the ribs. Actually, this album, overall, is stronger than I remembered. These 7 songs definitely make it worth owning.

7. Party In The Woods Tonight. I rememeber it but don't remember being particularly impressed with it. I do have a memory of it bein' a nice song.

8. My Love Is A Flower (Just Beginning To Bloom). Here's another one that really quite unforgetable. This line is part of a very gentle love song that doesn't stray to the 'too indulgent/too silly' region that he can sometimes go to.

9. I'm Nature's Mosquito. Here's song number six that makes this album worth owning. It's all about the little mosquito as only Jonathan can do it. Nice song. Fun. Almost too silly.
10. Emaline. I don't remember this song at all.
11. Lydia. Now here's a substantial song. A real love song about Lydia. It's more swingin' than most of the others on this album with nice harmonies. Very memorable.

12. I Hear You Calling Me. Now I remember this song. Quite nice really. Very listenable. Soft, gentle, loving.

13. Oh Carol (B-Side) (Bonus Track). Never heard this song.
14. Astral Plane (Live B-Side) (Bonus Track). I don't know how this live version sounds. The studio version is part of that great first Modern Lovers 1972 album.

15. Hospital (Live B-Side) (Bonus Track). Don't know this song either or the last one. chrisbct@hotmail.com

5 out of 5 stars An all-time favorite.......2005-10-03

Of the 7,000 CDs in my collection, this stands within my Top 50 somewhere alongside "Loveless" and "The Unforgettable Fire." A staggering album of pervasive beauty. If you're thinking at all about buying this CD, I urge you to do so. It is incredible.

1 out of 5 stars Put Danger Back in Your Life.......2004-02-06

Sizemore is my brother so of course i'm a bit biased... but none the less, this cd is incredible... too bad most of the world will never hear it huh... it's sort of sad isn't it... but alas, nothing can be done, so blah blah... cool

5 out of 5 stars Tremendously GOOD!.......2003-09-06

- Another one of those NYC-based artists/bands that I truly adore. I cannot say enough how good this CD is. The music has a very cinematic-life feel to it, blending the rousing dichotomies of urgent and pastoral tales. It's beautifully addictive. From my reactions to it, it's definitely one of the soundtracks to my life; as I've told Caroline, I feel like she's singing about some of my own scenarios. -

4 out of 5 stars good album.......2003-08-05

I bought this album after reading a review in Magnet magazine. They do sound a bit like the shoe gazer bands of the late 1980's and early 90's, but there is more to them than that. They incorporate acoustics into their music which the other bands of that particular genre didn't, ie: Lush, My Bloody Valentine, Chapterhouse, et al. The guitars seem to be layered, adding a deep, somewhat brooding sound to their music. I'm still getting used to the tracks and don't know them by heart yet, but #3,4 and 7 are very good.
This is petty, but I wish the cd or webpage had the lyrics to the songs because they are somewhat difficult to understand. I might appreciate the songs a lot more if I knew with certainty what they were saying.

5 out of 5 stars the best album you didn't know existed.......2003-06-30

i was in my local record store when i first heard this album being played... i couldn't believe how good it sounded. i also had no idea who these guys were. i actually stayed in the store for an hour just to listen to it.
i've heard folksongs compared to the likes of lush and rainer maria, but i think they go beyond that. caroline (the singer/writer) has a mysterious, ghostly voice that conveys beauty and passion, while at the same time seamlesslly meshing into the sound motifs of each song. they utilize a brit-pop/folk base for their music, while blending in wonderful effects (and a brilliant understanding for the moog synthesizer). try listening to "reunion" as a good introductory piece. "you walked me home" is my other suggestion. they both showcase caroline's strong ability to write good lyrics and the band's talent for combining different chord progressions and sound tapestries. i really have to say that it's been a long time since i've been so impressed by a "new" band on the scene. not to mention, all of my friends keep trying to steal it from me:)
even if you're not normally into dreamy girl rock, you should at least give them a listen. it's been a while since a band like them has surfaced to add a little creativity to the rock scene. and in a time when fabricated stick-sweet pop reigns, we should give all the support we can to the actual new talent arising.

One of the best CDs I've bought in years! Granted, I'm a bit Lerner-biased having played Col. Pickering in My Fair Lady before...and I just love his stuff anyways -- but nonetheless this CD is a GREAT buy! I found it in a store somewhere about 2-3 months ago, and I don't think it's left my CD player since. Domingo's occasional appearances add SUCH classy humor that I just roll over laughing everytime he sings! Granted, one must be at least fairly familiar with the story and flow of My Fair Lady to get all the jokes, but even without that, it's still a series of stellar performances. Buy this CD!
