KILLER CD!.......2007-06-22
HONEST-TO GODNESS, RED-DIRT REAL ROCK AND ROLL. WELL DONE,GIRLS.
KEEP THE FLAME BURNING.
Not really their best, but has a great attitude.......2005-10-27
This is not my favourite Donnas album. Admittedly, it was an immediate break from the Ramones sound of their first album (which was put out only earlier that year), and it marked the sound that they would use for the next few albums. But it is lacking the energy that you will hear in their other albums.
That's not to say that I don't like the album. Rock n Roll Machine itself may be one of the greatest songs that have been released in the past 10 years. It just so perfectly captures the attitude of adolescence. In fact, that song itself justified for me the purchase of this album.
The rest of the album fares well with songs like "Checkin' It Out" and "Looking For Blood" being a couple of highlights. But overall the album just thins out rather quickly compared to The Donnas' other efforts.
I suppose that I would go along with the others in saying that this is probably your best starting point, only because this was where the "Donnas' sound" that we know today really started, and I wouldn't want you to jump into it halfway. But there really are better Donnas albums out there.
Looking for Punk?.......2005-01-28
The Donnas surprises with their second album. The album full of great punk rock songs. The songs are short and fast ones like punk should be. The sound quality is very good. The vocalist Donna A. sings excellently. This female band is probably the best punk band in the world since Blondie. But like Blondie, The Donnas haven't started to make songs which are near pop music. No - The Donnas have 6 albums full of great punk rock music. The lyrics are very good - ambitious and angry...and the most important - rebellious. The songs like "Checkin' It Out", "Looking for Blood", "Rock 'n' Roll Machine", "Outta My Mind"...are truly punk classics. This album has also a great feature - the more you listen to it the more you like it. However, this album isn't even near their best...there's "Spend the Night" and "Get Skintight" which both are that kind of albums you can't easily be tired of. "Wanna Get Some Stuff", "Shake in the Action", "You Make Me Hot", "Rock 'n' Roll Machine"...make me think of Black Flag. The sounds are quite as near them...only they are now much better...but that's only a progress. I guess rock 'n'roll never dies...although punk rock isn't right now that "in-thing"...but who cares? I just wanna have some good rock music - I don't care so much about the outer world...they can play their lousy disco pop songs...as far as I don't hear them. The Donnas is right now the best punk band in the world...even the best punk band I know ever!
Stars: Checkin' It Out, Looking for Blood, You Make Me Hot, Rock 'n' Roll Machine
cool.......2004-08-02
Production-wise, this is one of The Donnas better albums. The songs are good - but the only ones I usualy listen to are Rock'N'Roll Machine, You Make Me Hot, Checkin' It Out, Gimee My Radio, Outa My Head, and I Want Some Stuff.
Song-wise, I'd say Get Skintight is better than this album.
Great rock C.D........2004-06-21
If you want to buy your first Donnas C.D. you can skip the self-titled and buy this. I first bought Spend the Night and sort of went backwards. I just bought this CD and it was great. I have listened to their other onces a million times and needed something new. There are 10 tracks on here and I love them all! This is a great rock 'n' roll album. I love the old Donnas days when their CDs sounded more raw-ish than now if you know what I mean.
Rock n Roll Machine is a good opener. This is like, a teenager's anthem right here. I also really like 'Checkin it Out' because it has a cool guitar solo. The guitar and bass on Speed Demon is really rad and makes it one of my favorite songs. And I also love Shake in the Action too. Donna R. aka Allison is a great guitarist and most bands have to have a great guitarist if I am going to listen to them. Also Donna C. is a pretty good drummer but she plays pretty basic beats on the album and still does today. It gets boring. Sorry, I have to say it. This is still a good cd nonetheless. I reccomend it to rock fans of every age.

If you're looking for an example of real girl power--as in underage females who genuinely pack a punch--your search is over. They may look like punk rock pinups, but these four young women--who follow the proud Ramones tradition by all taking on the name Donna--bash out the tunes with brawny, sweaty glee. Donna, Donna, Donna and, er, Donna are well aware that all great rock & roll, from Jerry Lee Lewis to Iggy Pop to Green Day, comes from the same basic roots, and these gals coax a fine harvest from those roots on hormone-mad songs like "You Make Me Hot" and "Leather on Leather." A well-oiled machine, indeed. --David Sprague

The Donnas At Their Best.......2001-12-15
The negative reviews in here are pretty funny. EVERY band is derivative of other sources, including the Donnas. Were the Stones totally original? Go ask Chuck Berry...The Donnas are a great rock'n'roll band. I think this set of tunes is their strongest...Yeah, she can't really sing, but so what? I respect them for doing something that rocks, and not just trying to fit in with current trends...The guy who hates them because they don't sound like the bands he likes was funny, too. That's right, guy. Nothing is good unless YOU like it. ahahaha
Donnas are pure rock 'n' roll.......2001-06-01
In today's MTV-crazed world it's hard to find something that one can really rock out to. The days of rockin' for a good time and doin' it well are long gone. Or are they? Meet the Donnas. If you're a fan of the Ramones, these four girls may as well be their female counterparts. (I'm crazy about both bands.) Donna R's guitar riffs, Donna F's bass and Donna C's banging on the drums back up Donna A's vocals about sex, drugs, and -- what else? -- rock 'n' roll. Also make sure to check out Get Skintight -- the follow-up to this one, and another example of rock at its finest.
Listen!.......2000-05-27
I met the Donnas and saw them at a small club in my home town of palo alto cali. they are awsome in person and sound even better live...EVERYBODY SHOULD BUY THEIR CD...
The Donnas--an unbiased, honest review........2000-04-15
I am not a teenage fan boy, nor am I an aging rock fan who thinks rock and roll ended with the Ramones. I'm simply a music lover who read about this group, and picked it up out of curiosity. I'm not in love with any of the band members.
The Donnas are a terrific reminder of just how much fun it can be to pump your fist in the air and yell along with your favorite sleazy lyrics. These girls are young, but they are serious, and attack their music with a ferocity often lost in today's pop/hip hop culture. Donna A's gritty vocals come across as half sneer, half smile, and the musicians, led by Donna R's impressive guitar crunching, give the sound a raw, youthful edge.
Is it original? Maybe not particularly. But it does seem fresh and new against the backdrop of today's mainstream radio. It's loud, unpolished, unapologetic...and a helluva lot of fun to listen to.
Bottom line: if you love smarmy teen idol pop, overproduced rap with metal overtones, or machine driven hip hop, then rejoice, for the world is still yours. For we chosen few who like our rock loud, fast, angry and dirty, I'll happily take The Donnas.
WEAK.......1999-11-11
Generally I like all teen girls. But in this case I'll have to pass. The songs are tired and the vocals are simply terrible. There's too much talent out there for this. If they had some skills or showed even a little promise, I would give them a break. But they really are a big JOKE. The guitar player is kinda cute tho.
