Brian Setzer may have been vilified by purists and progressives for daring to "modernize" rockabilly and swing, but the pompadoured Long Islander has now laughed all the way to the bank twice at their expense--and in two different decades, no less. Like its predecessor, the surprise hit The Dirty Boogie, this collection won't win points with music academics, but then Setzer's having too much fun to give a flying (musical) fifth. Though he clearly idolizes his forerunners, Setzer never lets his reverence for form get in the way of his sense of joy, committing frolicsome heresy on some classics along the way (injecting surprisingly effective looped samples and hip-hop beats into "Pennsylvania 6-5000" and giving "In the Mood" a rap!). His take on Bobby Darin's "Mack the Knife" is a bit slavish, only reinforcing the hit's perfection. But as he's admitted, Setzer's a rockabilly writer/guitarist by nature, a notion reinforced here by his own tunes and a flashy take on the instrumental "Caravan." His band charts are both serviceable and modern, but might benefit from a different arranger's perspective. And if his notion of fusing swing and rockabilly still seems marketing driven, recall that this is largely a joyously amped-up version of what Bill Haley was up to way back in his pre-"Rock Around the Clock" days. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Solid swingin sound.......2007-01-14
I was a stray cats fan, and it was the Gap ad with Jump Jive and Wail that clued me in to BSO. Great sound, although their live double disk from Montreal and Tokyo is solid five star, desert island quality. Well worth it, but one of the few bands that actually sound better live than in studio.
Really underrated.......2006-12-20
I don't understand all the negative comments regarding Vavoom. It's an excellent cd and I recommend it for any swing/rockabilly fans. Ride like Thunder is an excellent rockabilly song and I think the electronic samples throughout the cd were a great idea.
Hey Brian, I Love you Man !!!!!.......2006-07-13
What can I say from Brian?
This cd is great !!! For me is in the same level of "The Dirty Boogie" or maybe is better !!!
I'm a guitar student and have 20 years old but I love Brian's music because this remember me better epochs and also has a magic touch that make it so special.
You can't give to this cd less than 4 stars !!!!
Vavoom!.......2006-03-03
Great CD. Kids are dancing to 2 songs on it in the dance recital this year. We like all the songs on the CD.
Find a soft place to land.......2005-01-08
From the "Stray Cats" to today's "BSO" Brian has remained consistant. Either extreem... Totally hot or totally cold. I personally like his covers the best. Put on you crash helmet! I would like to see BSO do an album of christian music... adapt some of the traditional hymns to 50s and 60s Doo Wopp melodies. That would "Rock this Church" and make some of the fuddy duddies flip their toupees. If anyone could pull it off, Brian could. A double dog dare Brian!

Rock-A-Beatin' Boogie.......2004-06-17
Some songs are really great ("Mack the Knife", "Caravan", "From Here to Eternity", "Rock-A-Beatin' Boogie"). My favourite here is "The Footloose Doll"!
Album is produced by Glen Ballard (?) and Peter Collins! Two pop producers and that's why some songs are overproduced "Pennsylvania 6-5000", "Gettin' in the Mood", "That's the Kind of Sugar Papa Likes" (featuring 14 Karat Soul) & "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" (14 Karat Soul are here again on backings. And yes this is Queen's hit).
too expensive..........2003-12-03
Wow save your money, this is not worth it, this is really bad rockabilly because there is rap, hip hop and even techno in the mix, don't put your mind and body thru this, you deserve better try setzer's Dirty Boogie cd instead.
Jumpin' in the House!.......2000-09-02
Oh, Heck yeah! As usual, Brian just rocks! As far as I'm concerned, music's only purpose is to get you up and dancing. This album does it times ten. Go Brian! When's the next album??
americano.......2000-08-23
it's a good hipshakin'swinging song.the text is simple to sing and the musik makes my head go crazy.i love the sound of brian's guitar and the rumbing slappin'bass.that all makes me feel o.k.
