Radio Friendly
Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
Brought up in Pittsburgh, PA as the fourth of five boys, Marcus Hogan (b. Marcus Hogan Chlystek, 10/22/72, Greenville,OH) would receive his first electric guitar for his 13th birthday. The sounds of Kiss, Cheap Trick and especially Van Halen would be most influential in helping Hogan develop his own playing style. Concentrating solely on the guitar, Hogan would spend years searching for a vocalist in hopes of assembling a successful rock & roll band. After many of his attempts failed, Hogan would finally begin to take serious interest in writing his own lyrics and singing lead vocals. With the help from his friend and former guitar instructor Jeff Phillips, Marcus Hogan would record his debut album 'Radio Friendly' in the summer of 2000. Phillips would not only produce the debut in his home studio, he would also recruit his brother Pat Philips to play bass and Josh Borkowski (Voodoo Babies) to play drums on the album.
Album Description
'Radio Friendly' contains memorable tunes with distinct vocals. Singer-songwriter Marcus Hogan blends folk, pop and rock ala Tom Petty, Matthew Sweet and Paul Westerberg.

Old Skool.......2005-10-15
I have MC Shy D's first OG on cassette. In the shower, I still bump his muzik and re-live the old skool lyrics I grew up to when I was a kid. I'm now 24 and still enjoy listening to it as much as I did back then; even more now cuz I can appreciate the muzik and dig what it is he's rappin' about.
Rice Krispies.......2005-09-07
On his Greatest Hits, I was expecting to get a clean CD of songs that were taken from the original masters or reel-to-reels, but the first 9 songs were recorded off of vinyl.
I gave this CD 2 Stars because you can hear all of the snap, crackle, and pops that expect to hear on old records. If this might be a concern of yours, then buyer(s) beware...
Atlanta...that's where I stay....classic rhymes!!!.......2004-07-30
This is a real groundbreaking compilation that every hip hop fan should digest in full. You have to realize that MC SHY D was the first of his kind. You have to credit him with the fact that he was the first rapper from the south who had some originality. His skills, sound and style predated 2 LIVE CREW, of whom were his label mates.
He gives props to Atlanta in his music constantly -- he wasn't from the East Coast, which during his time, dominated hip hop.
It is important to note that his DJ Mike Fresh, had an incredible amount of talent. He could scratch (listen to "I Will Go Off Part II"), throw in dope samples (like in "Atlanta, That's Where I Stay"), and was a huge factor in the success of the immortal jams that this release contain!
The beats have heavy, peppy bass with fast 16th note hi-hat taps, almost like a pre-booty bass feel. SHY D himself usually sounds like he's about 16 years old.
MC SHY D, a figure that is often overlooked in the annuals of hip hop, who deserves way more credit than he gets.
Get this release and get educated!!!
I didn't know they were still around--I knew them back when!.......1999-12-07
I just gave the CD three stars as an even review; I've never heard a recording of theirs. Funny thing, though: Back in 1988 or '89, I met them (there were two of them). I lived in Atlanta, and my mother's friend and roommate was either dating one of them or good friends with one of them. Anyhow, they came over to the house one evening, and they met my mother and I. I, about four or five at the time, had no idea who they were (Musically, I still don't--I just looked their names up on a whim after remembering old songs I liked; I had no idea they had enough songs for a "Greatest Hits" CD). I had never heard their music (although they brought their album and may have autographed it), and didn't care to. I didn't like rap, and I guess I had my head on straight for a kid, because I still don't and most likely never will. But they were very nice guys. I remember I was reading my favorite children's book when they arrived, it was called "Just Like Me," and about a pair of twin sisters. And I remember while one talked to my mother and her friend, the other came over to the table and read the book aloud with me. Such nice people; I'm glad to hear they're still doing their thing.

subtle, calm, wonderful sound.......2005-10-18
I heard Shane Nicholson for the first time when he was touring in the US with Australian hit singer/songwriter Kasey Chambers (who lends background vocals to "Designed To Fade" and whose brother, Nash, produced the album). He blew me away live, but I was wary of buying the album in case, like Chambers, his live performances were much better than the album. I finally decided to take the chance and was happily surprised - every track of It's A Movie has a different sound and his lyrics are carefully written and a pleasure to listen to. I like all kinds of music, from country and folk to pop and hip-hop, and I have to say Nicholson is one of my all time favorites. Buy this album, no matter what your musical preferences - you won't be disappointed.
Neil Finn's Little Bro with a Twist.......2005-01-12
I will never understand how talent like this gets overlooked. I fell in LOVE with this album with immediately. This probably has something to do with the fact Shane seems to be channeling Neil Finn's (formerly of Spilt Enz, Crowded House) voice, and Neil is my one of my all-time heros. Regardless of that, Shane has created this album, all by his lonesome, and has perfectly demonstrated that he is a singer/songwriter who can stand on his own merits. From start to finish this is a beautiful, warm and soothing CD. Casey Chambers gives Shane a hand with "Designed to Fade" and their voices work seamlessly together. I saw them both live (I found Shane's CD first and tracked down a show later) and they did not disappoint. Shane did a solo acoustic set and blew me away with his keen ability to convey what he recorded in the studio. Never having heard Casey before, I was pleasantly surprised with her talent as well. This is a MUST HAVE CD!
Every song is perfect.......2005-01-08
It is hard to describe how excellent this album is. There is definately a sameness quality- It's all GREAT!
Ignore the reviews that claim this album doesn't have enough variation...the variations are subtle and sublime. Genius....
If you love Crowded House/ Finn Bros. you must have this album...I am driving down the road with the sun coming up over the ocean...and LIFE IS A MOVIE with this album cranked up!!!!
Good but not great.......2004-10-08
Although I really like "Nice to be here", the rest of the songs sound pretty much the same. I like Neil Finn and Shane definitely has that sound, but maybe on his next album he will do something a bit different to break out of the monotony of this one.
Excellent songwriting, vocals.......2004-05-27
The comparisons to Crowded House/Neil Finn are very accurate. Terrific album that won't disappoint.

Pretty Good.......2005-11-01
Their simple melodies and simple words were entertaining in my high school and early college years. I can see why I liked them back then. They did some nice harmonies and their music was fun.
Solid Solid Solid.......2002-01-22
Although not as good as Present Tense, Boomerang is still one hell of an album. Shoes on Ice really helps, too - they sound so tight and the drumming is so reserved compared to their later incarnations that if it weren't for the crowd, you'd have trouble identifying it as a live EP. If you like melodic pop, triple harmonies, almost enough fuzz, and solid boy-loses-girl lyrics, definitely give this a listen.
This deserves a better review than I'm able to write.......2001-05-22
I can't believe no one has written a review of this yet. If you don't own it, buy it now. If you have the vinyl version, get the cd. All the songs are great, and there are also live versions of 6 songs from Present Tense and Tongue Twister which are also great.

how it really was.......2006-01-16
In these days of revisionist history, with CNN being so busy trying to bash the government they can't be bothered to actually broadcast the news, a CD like this ought to be required listening for everybody. We'll just make the same mistakes over and over again if we turn our backs on our country's past, as so many people under 35 seem anxious to do. In fact, this gem ought to be cheaper so no matter how broken your "fixed income," is, you can afford this. Cronkite had no equal in his own time. his only superior was his mentor, Edward R. Murrow, who also did an "I can hear it Now," album, about 1919--49, now sadly out of print. This is a must own.
"AND THAT'S THE WAY IT IS".......2000-11-23
Those were the words spoken by Walter Cronkite at the end of the CBS Evening News. For some of us,too young to be in Saigon,or preoccupied with the latest dalliances of Lisa Hughes,(As The World Turns)Walter Cronkite was the eyes and ears of perhaps the most turbulent decade of the 20th Century. In I Can Hear It Now,we are given a review through Cronkite's narration as well as through the CBS News Archives, of the 1960's. How many people were tuned into AS THE WORLD TURNS November 22,1963 when the fateful bulletin from Dallas flashed into our living rooms? This CD brings you right there.Perhaps for some this is the defining moment of the sixties, but I Can Hear it Now brings you ALL of the voices and events of the time...King,the Beatles,Rachel Carson,Neil Armstrong. This is a must have for history and pop culture buffs. Also gives one an idea of what CBS News was at one time-probably the best source of news at the time.

Great sound!.......2001-12-14
I love the sound that heard on this record. First I heard about this record in Zero mag from San Jose and then went and got a copy. Spacewalkers has some great house tracks, with great production, radio friendly as hell! Then Cynyc wow, dark and "electro-dramatic", moves me back and forth! Get it if you enjoy quality.

Customer Reviews:
The spiritual nature of the lyrics makes the soul soar even higher........2005-11-22
Lately, I've been hearing a lot of Christian rock and pop artists who understand, thankfully, that "Christian" music does not have to mean "Bible-pounding, preachy, don't-you-dare-mention-anything-secular" music. I have to wonder if many of these artists grew up like me, listening to "Faith of Our Fathers" for the forty billionth time on a rickety old organ while everyone in the congregation snoozed. That would explain the joyous, inviting, non-judgmental and just flat-out fun vibe I'm hearing from a lot of these now-grown artists who are submitting their music to Indie-Music.com.
Dave Pettigrew is the latest example. A couple of tracks do slip over the line into overly-sentimental territory, but for the most part, this is a powerful, uplifting, musically sound collection of Christian rock and pop that almost blew out my speakers. Never underestimate the vocal power of a man singing about God.
Pettigrew kicks things off with "Teach Me to Drive," a song with rock-band energy that focuses on letting go of the wheel and letting a Higher Power take over. Each song that follows offers a message that anyone of any faith can understand. If you've prayed at all, you understand the frustration of the ballad "Closer to You": "Do you hear me when I pray, or am I just a thorn that you ignore?" (I also love the line, "I'm lost inside a maybe.") Pettigrew also connects with the feeling of having nothing going for him in this world but hope and faith ("What Your Love Can Do For Me" and "Strength of Angels") and seeing light in the darkest of places ("God on Broadway"). Each song is produced with full-throttle, 90210 meets The O.C. rock/pop production - very, very radio friendly.
My favorite track almost blew me out of my chair. "Movin' On" raises the roof, startles the neighbors, and if you're not careful, has you doing the chair dance while you're trying to write a review. This is raw, hungry, blues-flavored, relentless music with Pettigrew pouring everything he's got into his voice to pull it off. You could put the lyrics of regular rock fare to this music and it would still work, but the spiritual nature of the lyrics makes the soul soar even higher.
A few tracks like "Little Girl" are ones I can only recommend for fans of Lifetime movies and Oprah, but thankfully, Pettigrew focuses on his own prayers for the rest of the CD, being as honest about his shortcomings as he is about his faith. We get humility, and we get solid, energetic, powerful songwriting and production. That will save my soul faster than a rickety organ any day.

Dragonfly .......2005-12-13
Dragonfly was the first album by Mae Moore that I bought, and I still feel a strong affinity for it. The performance and songs are first-rate.
The recording quality is weak in spots, but generally good.
Kicks a**.......2004-03-03
I bought this album in the mid 90's and listened to it frequently while studying at university. I still listen to it on occasion and it is, as the other reviewers said, grossly underrated. It starts off strong with Genuine and doesn't let up. Watermark is another famous song from the album (incorporating the lead singer of "spirit of the west" superbly), but you should have no problem at all listening to this entire CD without skipping a single track.
Mae's music maze.......2000-04-01
I'm agree with the other reviewer about M. Moore's under estimated situation. Of course, musically she's far from being an 'underrated' artist. On this record, entitled "Dragonfly", she invites the listener to share an experience, to explore her (and your) inner maze of beautifully coloured emotions. This is my favorite disc from that great canadian artist. The album is on a par with her new (1999) release, "Mae Moore" (issued in Canada under the Big Hip record label).
Sweetly Genuine.......2000-03-28
Mae Moore is one of the great under appreciated artists of our time. Dragonfly and Bohemia are consistently great, with not a single track between them that fails to be beautiful.
Simliar to Sarah McLaughlin and Milla's _Divine Comedy_.
Gorgeous, touching and sweet.
I first heard her on the radio driving across Saskatchewan, and I was so caputred, I bought this album as soon as I reached a town with a record store.
