Battling his own personal demons while he has been highly coveted as a producer for other bands, singer/songwriter Mark Linkous' output with his own Sparklehorse has been as irregular as it is ingenious. And it's been five years since the candid album It's a Wonderful Life welcomed a clean-and-sober, Linkous crafting the same divine and bizarre songs that have come to define his North Carolina-based band. That inclination continues here with the peculiar front man punctuating his songs with mentions of ghosts and knives and mountaintops, and presenting them with a murmured, spaced-out and psychedelic soundtrack. The up-tempo, bundle-of-nerves pop songs "It's Not So Hard" and Guided by Voices twin "Ghost in the Sky," though luscious, seem out of place among slow and startling ballads like "Getting It Wrong," "See the Light" or, especially, the imminent kiss-off "Some Sweet Day," where Linkous grouses, "I was the one who loved you most/ But you can't put your arms around a ghost." A parting shot that's meant to lingermuch like the 53 minutes that are Mark Linkous' latest comeback. --Scott Holter
Customer Reviews:
Linkous does power pop.......2007-04-28
I love the music on this one. "Ghost in the Sky", "Mountains", "Knives of Summertime" are amazing. Best music he's done. The words are not up to "Wonderful Life" level, but I can't argue with the music.
Not sure what "Morning Hollow" is doing on here, though. Seems to break up the flow too much. It's a good song, but this is the exact same version from "Wonderful Life". I'd advise skipping it -- album plays better just listening to the pop tunes.
Yummy.......2007-03-10
I like the new pop-ness about it. A yummy 10 minute instramental makes me totally space out. I very much like it. Mark Linkous did it again. (but this time more happy).
Anyway, I love this band. The album is no let-down.
Perfect.......2007-03-05
Haunting, lyrical, with melodies that will stick in your head upon first listening...a masterpiece of post-rock/post-pop songwriting. In my top 10 faves of 2006.
Not my type of music, but...........2007-01-07
This is the type of music I typically wouldn't care for. The music is electronic and airy, and the singer's voice a little too sweet and fragile for my taste. I must say, though, that the disc is very good. The songs are layered, complex, and the album unfolds nicely. After a couple of spins, I found myself really enjoying the music and the mood it creates. To me, the only negative is the 10+ minute wordless final song, with soft, dreamy melodies that would have made a nice 2-3 minute finale but don't quite keep my interest for the entire duration.
Great range, dreamt on great stars.......2006-12-16
With breathtaking range, a heartfelt sensability that doesn't annoy, great ideas, lyrics and melodies, Sparklehorse strums his way into his fifth or so album, with beautiful nonchalence. But don't be decieved. This is a rich, interesting, complete album. All the trimmings. And maybe the first time since Vivadixie that he's had rendered emotions so bare.

Customer Reviews:
AN AMAZING REMASTERED ELO COLLECTION..................2006-11-25
This cd collection of Elo greatest hits is not in chronological order, but it really does'nt matter. There are some edited versions of songs but I really believe Jeff Lynn put alot of care into this remastered gem. These two cds sounds so awesome that the edits really don't take alot out of this collection. Jeff Lynn believed each Elo song should be treated like a single, each single given the time and effort and care to make each single song stand out in it's own way, weather you love or hate the song, Jeff Lynn had that philosophy. This Elo collection defines that Jeff Lynn philosophy. I listen to this collection and I am just amazed at the skill and craftmanship of Jeff Lynn and Elo. Jeff truly is one of Englands greatest single hit makers. This collection is better than the Elo box sets that have been released in the last 16 or so years. the sound quality of these cds is incredibly pristine. This music may sound like gooey 1970s bubblegum music to some, but to me it is amazingly creative structured music that is catchy with rythm and spiritual form. I have to admit when I hear some of these Elo songs I have to crack a smile. Jeff Lynn and the rest of Elo put alot of pride into each song they ever created, this collection shows that. A true must have for Elo fans and music fans in general. The remastering on this cd set is incredible. Note: Jeff Lynn in 1994-1995 engineered for the three remaining Beatles at the time with "Free as a bird" and "True Love", this shows you the respect even the remaining Beatles had for Jeffs amazing talent.............
THE BEST ELO GREATEST HITS COLLECTION.......2006-05-26
This collection is well worth it. I Highly recommend "LIGHT YEARS" to any fan of the Electric Light Orchestra. The amount of songs compaired to other compilations is hard to beat.
Catchy pop with classical touches.......2004-10-29
Electric Light Orchestra was one of the UK's most consistent and successful bands of the 1970s. They had a long string of hits throughout that decade and the first part of the next one. Their sound was characterised by plush harmonies, loads of strings and catchy tunes. These 38 tracks include the overwhelming majority of their hits from the 1970s and the early 1980s plus some great album tracks. My favourites include Livin' Thing with its captivating fiddle, the addictive Sweet Talkin' Woman, the rousing Turn To Stone and others like Wild West Hero Don't Bring Me Down, Mr Blue Sky and 10538 Overture. It may sound like lightweight pop, but it is a skilfully honed, intelligent and cleverly produced style with classical flourishes that always remained accessible. If you like catchy pop with a touch of the orchestral, this album's for you.
A GREAT Album, but...............2004-01-08
Again this is one of ELO's best, with ALOT of their best songs on it, but if you paid the " outragious " price here that Amazon is charging you, then you've been royally ripped off.....sorry.FYE's is selling this same album for $24.00 and change. It is a good album though.
Entrancing stuff.......2001-08-12
My,my,what a diverse taste in music I have.Part of it extends to this heavily enjoyable assortion of superb musical numbers.Particular favourites include the funky, fusion noted number Evil Woman, the jolty, unforgettable Mr.Blue Sky,the brilliant Last Train to London and the heavy bass number Confusion.Born, bred and based in Birmingham myself,it makes me proud such musical talent could emerge from my home city.Definitely one of the best bands of the '70's,and significantly make us remember the decade.I thoroughly recommend this product.

Customer Reviews:
kylieeeee.......2007-07-06
What I love about Kylie is that she is never serious. So pop this in and dance about.
Camp Classic.......2007-03-07
Although I do not believe this to be Kylie's best work, it's still fun and really worth a listen. This is her come back album right after Impossible Princess which failed. She changed her sound to this late 70's disco sound and really went with it the whole way. The songs are not the most dance worthy I have ever heard, and the pop goes in to generic territory at times, but some of this stuff is genius. For example, Your Disco Needs You might be one of the most genius songs I have ever heard, not to mention great to dance too. Disco Down is also a great song. On the other hand, Spinning Around, Please Stay, and Kids with Robbie Williams, which were all singles, do not measure up to the rest of this CD. Althought this CD is uneven it is still worth a listen and it has the fun factor.
The Key Tracks Are: Your Disco Needs You, Disco Down, So Now Goodbye, Light Years, and Butterfly.
Kylie Minogue is Amazing.......2006-08-31
all the songs on here are great but theres one that stands out Light Years is a Amazing and Magical song it's a song that will get you dance'in. it's not a slow song or not a fast song it's just right this song will lift you.......it's Magical...
Fun dance-pop!.......2006-07-16
This album is really fun and upbeat. In my opinion, the best tracks are singles "Spinning Around", "On a Night Like This", "Please Stay" and "Butterfly", which all rate 11/10; but that doesn't mean that the rest of the album is bad at all. All the other tracks are 9/10s except for "Bittersweet Goodbye" and "Kids" which seem out-of-place on this album. I give them both 8/10.
If you're into music with more meaning and depth, check out the albums "Impossible Princess" and "Kylie Minogue" instead. If you're having a dance party, throw on this album (along with "Fever") and dance all night long!
Skip This One.......2006-06-23
There are only 2 good songs on this album: "Spinning Around" and "On a Night Like This". Both are availible on her "Ultimate Kylie" compilation, so there's no need to purchase this album. Well, "Love Boat" is also okay, but you don't NEED to own it.

EPICS THAT DO NOT DISAPPOINT.......2007-05-14
WHAT A BRILLIANT IDEA TO TAKE HOLLYWOOD'S COLLECTION OF HISTORICAL EPIC MOVIES, EXTRACT THE BEST PORTIONS OF THE SCORES AND COMBINE THEM FROM THE DAWN OF MAN TO THE RECENT PAST. I PARTICULARLY ENJOY THE SUITES FROM GLADIATOR, BRAVEHEART AND THE VIKING. THE REPRODUCTION OF THESE SCORES BY THE CITY OF PRAGUE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA AND CHORUS IS BRILLIANT, AND THE RECORDING WAS EXCELLENT. I ONLY WISH THERE WERE EIGHT DISCS INSTEAD OF FOUR TO COVER THE VOLUMES OF SCORES THAT COULD NOT BE INCLUDED. LET'S HOPE FOR A VOLUME II.
Interesting selections . . ........2006-12-15
This compiiation album makes an excellent gift for that person wanting to discover great, epic scores. I'm surprised, however, that Vangelis' Alexander is included in this one. Not bad, just surprised.
The reason I give this album 4 out of 5 stars is because of the swashbuckler section. How is it that CutThroat Island - one of the greatest epics in history - was scrubbed out of the list? Pirates of the Caribbean is included on the selection but nothing from Debney's masterpiece?!
Yes, that is a huge compilant. If you haven't discovered CutThroat Island, I suggest you get it then you'll understand my frustration. Still, this album is a great buy and worth looking into!
"Epics featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra ~ 60 years of film scores".......2005-09-07
When I think of the "Golden Age of Hollywood", many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "EPICS:THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD ACCORDING TO HOLLYWOOD", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades right and up to the present 2005.
There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classics that even the youngsters today recognize...sweeping scores that capture the drama, mystery, adventure, action and romance...one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this...many nominated and winners by the Academy for Best Original Score...
Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come...this collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

Customer Reviews:
They just don't make music like this anymore..........2007-06-26
...and in my opinion, that's a damn shame.
ELO was such a refreshing band when they were in their prime. Their music was nothing more than feel-good rock and roll with melodies you can hum or whistle and lyrics you CAN ACTUALLY UNDERSTAND!
Nowadays, "popular" rock and roll seems to be dark and angry and full of angst. Why is everyone so pissed off?
Don't get me wrong. There are a few talented musicians in today's music world and yes, the world has changed a great deal in the past 20+ years, and yes, there are a lot of problems in and with the world in general, but when I listen to music, I do it to ESCAPE my problems and the problems of the world. I want to be uplifted and have some fun.
Enough ranting.
This is a very good compilation, but by no means is it complete. I think the only way to get ALL of your favorite ELO songs is to collect their individual albums (yes, even Xanadu! "Don't Walk Away" and "I Take The Fall" are EXCELLENT songs!).
This set might be good for a new ELO fan and for those who need a place to start when trying to upgrade from LPs, cassettes or 8-tracks!
Very Best of ELO CD.......2006-02-17
I was very pleased with the CD. The shipping was prompt and CD was well packed and arrived in good shape.
Great for the newbie.......2004-04-10
I am sick of ELO being bashed as the poor man's Beatles, as sappy, as "disco-flavored violin trash," and as infantile muzak. All of these criticisms are from people who haven't bothered to listen to ELO from beginning to last and who are too obtuse to realize that Jeff Lynne is a musical genius (and no, I don't use that word lightly). Yes, his lyrics are banal, but with this type of music, who on earth cares? The lyrics to "Ob La Di, Ob La Da" are trite too, but with such catchy music, one can overlook the banality of the words.
This set is the not definitive set of the three issued ELO compilations, check out "Flashback" for that distinction. "Xanudu" is still a limping dog of a song, but there are some remastered gems here. ALl of the first 2 discs are pure magic, including ELO's most underrated (and, I think, best) song, "Nightrider." And how about "Four Little Diamonds" on disc three, where you can Lynne counting down the intro and sounding exactly like Ozzy Osbourne, in their mutual Birmingham accents.
The sound quality is excellent and the track order is pleasing. There are no omissions and only a few questionable inclusions, and they all appear on disc three.
I bought my first ELO single when I was 10 years old and I never looked back. If you've read this far, you're a fan like me and you will devour this set. Long live this sappy, trite, banal band... I still love 'em forever!

Not much to say about this compilation, but here's the lowdown:
Ever heard of the 2-disc set "Light Years" everyone that's craving for a great "best of" is raving about? No... well, it was released in 1997.
This set is the same, also made in Austria (not in Sweden as the title might suggest!) but re-issued in 2000, same track content, but with different artwork.
Exactly the same versions (even the core serial number is the same!), but better priced!

A Beautiful Collection of Russian Liturgical Music.......2004-04-20
Russian liturgical music from the monasteries is a combination of a number of different styles. Since the Church id from the orthodox tradition, the music is influenced partly by Greek liturgical music. It also has a bit of a western Gregorian flow to it, though this is not as strong as other influences. It also has a bit of Russian folk music flair to it. Musically it is interesting, but it also has a spiritual quality to it. Perhaps because it has survived against tremendous odds during the Soviet years, it has strength to it as well.
This recording by the Novospassky Monastery Choir contains liturgical music primarily for Easter but contains other prayers and psalms as well. The CD has liner notes but no translation for the music, but for the price, this is not a complaint. The choir is strong and is able to convey both the majesty and beauty of the music.
Once again, Naxos has provided a unique quality musical experience and a budget price.

Customer Reviews:
Ensemble Galilei's music is lilting, elegant and unexpected!.......2002-11-29
With their soulful playing and artful, sometimes even ephemeral arrangements, the six women of Ensemble Galilei convey a rare depth of emotion. In the insert notes, gamba player Carolyn Ann Surrick describes their creative process: "[In making this recording, we engaged in]...a kind of work that is so focused and intense that years can go by in one afternoon... Extraordinary music-making requires trust... [We] live for the times when the only thing that exists right then is the music--when the instruments are speaking as if we don't exist, and they are having their own conversation." Thank you, Ensemble Galilei, for allowing the rest of us the privilege of coming along for the ride! It's simply delectable. This chamber ensemble, featuring fiddle, harp, gamba, oboe, pipes and percussion, can also be heard on their other Telarc release, "From the Isles to the Courts", and "The Mystic and the Muse: Celebrating 600 Years of Women in Music", on the Dorian label.
beautiful.......2001-01-22
Sheer beauty, as a lover of English music I found this to be one of the most beautiful of all Shakespearean albums. Such harmony, such subtlety, one wishes that the gentle night will never stop.
Excellent!.......2001-01-04
Ensemble Galilei provide some excellent arrangements of English renaissance compositions. I believe that John Playford (English Dancing Master) fans will be particularly satisfied with the renditions presented here. It is very unfortunate that E.G. did not provide more arrangements from such early music sources. Some of E.G.'s own compositions seem very weak and not in the renaissance spirit of the rest of the CD. Nonetheless, this CD is highly recommmended.
It will bring about many gentle nights.......2000-11-22
I found this album to be solid. Very sweet, but not afraid to use percussion which makes it livelier and more fun. I adore the quiet, peacefulness of the music and the flawless execution of these renaissance songs.
Visualizing Beauty.......2000-08-20
I recently had the good fortune to direct a performance of King Lear--the ENTIRE five acts, in a community theatre, non-profit setting. I used twenty-four fully committed non-actors, who for the love of the ideas, participated in this performance. The first and main challenge that I faced was, how do I go "behind" the words, and invoke the right emotions, etc., to give these actors the range and tools needed for an effective, powerful performance? Critical to this performance was the beauty and brilliance of this recording, which I used throughout the various scenes of the play. This helped the performers tremendously, creating the different tapestries in the mind of the Bard. In short, this work is real genius, that I was so happy that I stumbled across. I am now putting in our performance programs, along with our most heart-felt thanks to E.G., the name of the recording and I have copies from Telarc to sell at each performance!

Real Jazz Fusion.......2007-02-13
This is a must have for Jazzeros and especially Fusion lovers. I had this on cassette back in the day and whore it out! I missed having it but now have it again on disk. This is an excellent intro to Chick and the other artist in the band. Look and see how far they all have come and what they play. This is one of my favorite disks no matter what mood I'm in. I just played it for a friend who has been asking for good stuff since he's just learning about jazz and he loves it though it's 20 years old. Next is Return to Forever. Awesome album! Some of the Elektric Bands very best. Enjoy!
Fusion pioneer on autopilot.......2005-12-10
Too much of this sounds (as another reviewer aptly describes it) like "Fu-zak": bland and hummable but ultimately unmemorable. (You know the kind of song you hear as the 'theme song' to cable public access talk shows? I was reminded of that several times while listening to this...)
Only sporadically did songs from this one jump out at me ("Time Track" and the title track are 2 of the better cuts) and several cuts ("Flamingo" is a case in point) were downright yawners. There's no question these are fine players and that Corea himself was critical to the formation of jazz-rock fusion as a member of Return to Forever but this just doesn't excite me.
BOTTOM LINE:
I'm at a loss as to why I bought this one now that I listen to it years after purchase. Definitely one to skip. For a better look at Corea's fusion powers, try the self-titled CHICK COREA ELEKTRIC BAND (ASIN B0000001PW) or his former band Return to Forever's ROMANTIC WARRIOR (ASIN B00004HYLF).
Interesting Exploration.......2005-10-20
Not my favorite but here is what I love about it. Chick seems to enjoy exploring. With these players he has the perfect ensemble to do that. I get the feeling that he wraps his head around a sound or feel that he wants and just goes after it. Each album seems to point in a different direction with each track taking us further out there. Sometimes we don't know where we are going but it is sure a fun ride. I don't know if he's exploring techno or what on this one but there is so much subtle stuff going around a huge, fat beat that it's hard not to play it over wondering what you just heard. You definitely have to have a good sound system to listen to this; otherwise you miss it, like taking a scenic highway with dirty windows.
Light Years...........2005-07-21
Every musician on this album was a top notch jazz musician, just not at their best form for the recording of this disk. Now, don't think I'm saying this just because I'm a purist, and don't like 70's and 80's fusion. I do, and The Chick Corea EB has made some killer cuts. Everything sounds too commercial here, something off of a 1985 Spyro Gyra album. Dave Weckl had too many electronic drums in his kit, and the whole thing sounds techno. These musicians are playing real good on this album, but maybe if they were playing some acoustic instruments and not stuff that sounds dated today, it would be an enjoyable listen. If this is your first EB listen, and don't like it, keep looking. There's great ones out there!
Has Some Worthwhile Moments and KILLER Bonus Tracks.......2004-10-05
Here, Chick was faced with a dilemma, whether to make a blowing record like the first EB disc or play it safe and vie for more airplay. Unfortunately, the "Play It Safe" demon on Chick's shoulder had the final say, for the most part.
Most of the set is more Fuzak-lite but despite that, some fangs begin to protrude on the feisty, funky "Time Track" (which was blowaway when played live), the lumbering "The Dragon" and the fiery "View From The Outside". It's not until the bonus tracks that you get real serious stuff, like the mysterious Arabic/Oriental flavored "Hymn of The Heart" (with some cool fretless bass work from John Patitucci), the raw "Kaleidoscope" and the high-tech "Smokescreen".
If only the rest of the album was more like these bonus tracks!

Jimmy Webb writes, Glen Campbell Sings!.......2004-05-13
This album came after Campbell's Still Within the Sound of My Voice when Campbell returned to the charts again with the Webb penned title song.Light Years is primarily Jimmy Webb songs(7 excellent, varied Webb tunes). The title track Light Years is classic Webb, beautiful soaring melody with poignant lyrics.Campbell's voice is elegant, contemporary, emotive, and anything but country.Webb simply brings the best out of Campbell as an artist.Music such as this has no category(and thus little commercial marketability).I originally purchased this on cassette in the 80's and have replaced it with a CD.Campbell has not put out an album since with an abundance of Webb songs.I hope they get together soon--we need this kind of music --
