Floyd's first album of the 1970s gets MFSL treatment.......2006-03-17
Pink Floyd's fifth album Atom Heart Mother was released in October of 1970.
Atom Heart Mother was one of the band's more daring to date and was one their best in their so-called transitional period. I remember first getting this on cassette tape from my dad in August of 1987 and was just in awe on how great this album was and still is today(I have the remastered CD now).
Pink Floyd's history is really divided in five parts. First was the Syd Barrett era (1966-68), next was the transitional era(1968-70), then it was the classic Floyd era(1971-75), followed by the Waters era(1976-83) and lastly the post-Waters era(1987-today).
Atom Heart Mother was recorded at Abbey Road Studios and was produced by Pink Floyd and engineered by Peter Bown and Alan Parsons.
The album begins with the 23 and a half minute title cut which took up the whole of the first side of the original album and combined classical with rock with funk with avant-garde and was split into six parts(Father's Shout(with low E chord going into the track), Breast Milky(with the cello playing alongside Roger Waters' bass and Rick Wright's organ before giving away to some great overdubbed guitar work from David Gilmour and stellar drumming by Nick Mason), Mother Fore(which introduces us to the John Aldiss Choir), Funky Dung(my favorite section of the piece which combined David's guitar soloing with the choir doing some off-the-wall chants and worked excellent), Mind Your Throats Please(included some mellotron from Rick and tape effects which predates Dark Side) and the piece concludes with Remergence which was a summary of all of the parts of the album). The piece was written by all four Floyd members and Ron Geesin whom wrote the choral and orchestral parts on the track and worked with Roger on his solo debut Music From the Body.
The second half of the album/CD contained three shorter tracks starting with Waters' ballad If which is a great song and he would subsequently play it live on his Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking and Radio KAOS tours. Next is Wright's Summer 68 and is one of his best numbers. We then have the atmospheric Gilmour masterpiece Fat Old Sun which was his first song he penned lyrics for by himself and is a beautiful song. The song would be resurrected for David Gilmour's unplugged concerts in London in 2001 and 2002 which is documented on his David Gilmour in Concert DVD. The album concludes with the 13 minute instrumental Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast which is a homage to Floyd's then roadie Alan Stiles and a collage of music and sound effects like water dripping, eating food, cooking and mumbling(eggs, bacon, marmalade) all recorded in Nick Mason's kitchen. The song is split in three parts(Rise and Shine(which combined piano, hi-hat, guitar and organ), Sunny Side Up(which is all acoustic guitar and sounds like an early version of A Pillow of Winds which would appear on the band's next disc Meddle) and Morning Glory(which has the intro to Rise and Shine that gives way into a jam and concludes with the water dripping).
Atom Heart Mother was a sign of great things to come for the band and was the band's second disc to crack the American Top 100 peaking at a modest #55 and eventually went Gold in later years.
This was another stepping stone to the band's eventual world domination despite the fact that most of the band despise this album.
This version of the remaster was released one year before Capitol issued their remaster. What is noteworthy is that at the end of Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast has drips that continue on and on like the original UK vinyl and keeps going on and on. Unfortunately this version proved obsolete once MFSL folded and when Capitol re-released the album in 1995.
Highly recommended!
Fascinating.......2005-09-22
I don't have anything against long compositions and/or extended solos. Provided, that is, that you actually have something to say. But listening to Atom Heart Mother is like listening to somebody who takes an hour to explain to you that 1+1=2. Fascinating, indeed.
Great early Floyd classic gets the royal gold treatment!.......2003-12-30
This MFSL gold CD of this classic Pink Floyd album is spectacular!!! This is the best this album has ever sounded!!! A treat from start to finish!!! This early album from Floyd proves they had a lot more to offer than just "Dark Side Of The Moon!!! A very underrated album it's cool to hear the group use horns and choirs!!!Truly remarkable!!! A+
Ultimate psychedelic fantasy.......1999-06-30
While many consider Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall as the pinnacle of the Pink Floyd enigma, Atom Heart Mother was the album that, while retaining the wash of Sixties psychedelia, began to experiment with themes and concepts. The title track, intended originally as the theme for a western, is a massive undertaking of production and arrangement. Though it sounds sloppy by today's standards, for 1970 it was far ahead of its time. It moves through the various sections seamlessly, creating a mood of temporal dislocation. The cello parts are particularly fascinating-this is the only piece of music that has ever made me cry, it was just too beautiful to stand. Images of earthen pleasures and astral journeys to where stars have no names, this song represents an extraordinary talent for leaving the right spaces between the notes. "If", the second track, offers an almost pure and innocent look at the fear of oncoming madness ( a fear which would be later realized). The song is very laid back and touching. "Summer `68" is somewhat cheesy at times, though the trumpet sections are full of repentant anguish at succumbing to the pleasures of flesh (a groupie). Very bouncy, but still manages to be dark and Floydian. "Fat Old Sun" is my favorite of this album. Though badly recorded and mixed, the images of freedom in childhood, blissful endless summer where the twilight is eternal is about as mellow as you get. The guitar solo at the end is killer (listen to the bass line-its one of Water's best). "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast" is kind of silly, though the voice of Alan making breakfast on morning glory seeds is just perfect. The song is somewhat rushed, but the last segment, Morning Glory, is fantastic. Can't even describe the feeling it gives me. Although flawed at times, Atom Heart Mother still stands as one of the most innovative albums ever written. The ultimate psychedelic fantasy.
Love the psychedelic stuff!.......1999-06-18
Great psychedelic, DIY rock symphonies from the Floyd, before the band got huge. UMMAGUMMA's just as great, too. This experimental stuff is great, and other bands like Can, Faust, Magma, Soft Machine, are worth checkin' out too.

Customer Reviews:
's good........2001-02-10
I find it somewhat troubling that this edition apparently goes the route of the repackaging entitled 'James' by replacing Hang On and Crescendo (good songs, mind) with Sit Down and Lose Control--which are already readily available on the Best of.., you know. Hence, only three stars. I hate it when record companies feel the need to screw around with albums to try to sell a few more copies.
Still, it's good. I have to say, Government Walls and the anti-religion song the name of which escapes me right now don't really work very well, though. Too topical, even if I more or less agree with the sentiments expressed. That just doesn't sound like James; it's the same reason Greenpeace and Go to the Bank off of Whiplash were iffy. But otherwise, it's good, even if the loss of Hang On and Crescendo (I have the deleted American edition, and you should try to find it too) is extremely uncool. The highlight has to be the title track, with completely ridiculous yet at the same time, somehow, utterly wonderful lyrics.
Bah. I think this is James's third-best album, after Seven and Laid. You oughta buy it.

An interpreter's magic that is spell-binding........2001-04-13
Here is a welcome to a "Nostalgia" series by Naxos, and a welcome into the 21st Century to the great Irish tenor John McCormack. Younger shoppers may not be familiar with this remarkable singer who once rivalled Caruso in the recording popularity stakes. Blessed with the naturally beautiful voice and the secure breath control that any singer might envy, McCormack had the additional ability to communicate directly and memorably and vividly. He polished and perfected his inimitably Irish diction until he felt confident that every listener in the largest auditorium could hear and understand every word. Feeling he had no flair for foreign languages or for acting, he retired early from the operatic stage, but not before he had made recordings of several Mozart and Handel arias that have remained models ever since. Some of his recordings of lieder by Hugo Wolf, moreover, can still send shivers down the spine.
This CD of "Favourites" provides songs he recorded between 1912 and 1940. The sentiments may be passé (patriotism, nostalgia, piety, the praise of women and the sorrow of parting) but the sincerity and charm transcend fashion. There is also an interpreter's magic evident in the dramatic monologue "Kathleeen Mavourneen" and the jaunty recounting of what happened in "The Garden Where the Praties Grow" that is spell-binding.

The Sound and Style Unique to Mother's Milk.......2000-02-18
This CD marks the pepper's segueway from high tempo funk/punk (freaky styley, uplift mofo...) into sexy, lush rock (Blood Sugar Sex Magik); While maintaining elements of both. The addition of John Frusciante and his beautiful guitar riffs and rock-outs(listen for them near the end of most songs) made all the difference.
One of their best CD's of all.......1999-01-24
This is a fast paced CD with an awesome cover. The best track is Magic Johnson. Other cathcy ones like sexy Mexican Maid and Good time Boys

I love this CD. Laurel Masse has a remarkable voice which she uses with great expertise on this collection of beautifully performed and arranged songs. Listening to this collection is a very special experience you won't want to miss.

I collect a great deal of music, and this album is superb. Mixing genuine spiritual intensity with unmatched musicality, this musical experience is beyond compare. There is not a weak moment, and it includes possibly the best recording of "Motherless Child" I've heard. A must have.

A Dignified and Welcome Contribution to Spiritual Music!.......2001-10-22
Those of us who adore spiritual albums are very lucky that one of the founding members of the Manhattan Transfer has decided to turn her talents to a cause that interests us so!
In this album, Laurel Masse baptizes an old music hall with her GORGEOUS voice and spiritual impromptu songs that spill right from her beating heart.
Some of my favorite pieces on the album were "Radiant Flame of Gold", a very powerful safety/comfort chant embracing either "Saint Brigit" or "the Goddess, Brigit" depending on your religion. I also enjoyed "The Mountainy Singer" which is just a lively, spirited, catchy tune. And her improvisational pieces are absolutely divine.
I'm very into voices, and this is a STRONGLY voice-centered album, so let me try to describe her voice in case it's helpful to anyone. Her singing style is NOT opera on most pieces. It's a Streisand-like voice, very clear and powerful with only light vibrato. It'll draw you in on the very first song and make you wish you could sing like that!
I'm glad she made this album and I would recommend it to others who like very dignified spiritual music.
An amazing piece of work!.......2001-06-18
This CD is truly amazing. What a gift! Laurel Masse's willingness to expand her musical horizons has brought forth an astoundingly varied and beautiful piece of work. From the opening notes of the Quaker hymn "How Can I Keep From Singing?" to the closing track, "Lone Wild Bird/MacIntosh's Lament," this ia multi-layered, richly hued CD filled with intensity and heart. The range of selections alone defies classification, and the beauty with which she infuses these songs is thrilling. This is not "background music"--like all true art, "Feather and Bone" challenges your senses...and, eventually, opens your heart and mind. Thank you, Laurel, for following your own sacred heart as an artist, and taking your audience along on the journey.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent reissue.......2002-10-17
It's hard being an American James fan. None of their albums since "Whiplash" have been released Stateside, and their early albums (such as this stellar 1990 effort) are either out of print, or difficult to find.
Thank goodness, then, for imports. This particular reissue (one of four released by Mercury late last year) features all the original tracks from the UK release of "Gold Mother" (including "Crescendo" and "Hang On", which were inexplicably left off the US release-aka "James"), plus three extra tracks: a revved up remix of "Come Home", a stunning acoustic version of "Lose Control", and the stellar live finale of "Sit Down" (the band's biggest hit).
Throughout this release, the power of James is equally evident in chaotic, guitar-driven numbers like "God Only Knows", and "You Can't Tell How Much Suffering On A Face That's Always Smiling"; and quieter, more acoustic moments such as "Walking the Ghost" and "Top of the World". The live versions of songs also highlight the band's dynamic stage presence.
If you're missing James during their current musical hiatus, pick up this album and let it remind you of just how great this underrated band is.

SILENT YEARS no more!!!!.......2007-07-17
William Perry's wonderful music from THE SILENT YEARS (films from the Paul Killiam collection) charmed me instantly when the series ran on PBS back in 1971. At the time I was fiendishly practicing my classical guitar morning, noon and night and almost nothing could entice me to set the thing down, but the first few notes of the series theme, "Georgia" from the Chaplin film THE GOLD RUSH, did it every time. I looked forward to the films just to hear the wonderful musical scores. Knowing the main themes of LIMELIGHT and MODERN TIMES to be Chaplin's own, I thought for years that Chaplin himself had composed the GOLD RUSH (and series) theme and even at one time ventured to the Library of Congress Music Reading Room to implore the folks there to help me find it. Unsuccessful there (one of the few times I ever was), I did my own arrangement by ear and toyed with it for a few years for fun.
This music is everything one could wish silent film music to be. It's unabashedly romantic, bold and dramatic, warm, engaging and tuneful. It doesn't sound at all dated and has not a hint of the cliche Keystone Cop sound. My favorites are the suites from the THE GOLD RUSH, Barrymore's THE BELOVED ROGUE (a great, great historical romantic adventure film, incidentally) and Valentino's BLOOD AND SAND. Two of the ROGUE themes - the one introduced after Villon's (Barrymore's) father is burned at the stake, which represents the father's spirit, and the love theme - regularly move me literally to tears. Perry is an agile and sensitive pianist and a remarkable composer. He's a brilliant melodist and his feel for dramatic construction is so strong that one is simply swept along breathless. I'm reminded of Schubert's "Wanderer Fantasy" and the characteristic pieces of Albeniz, "Suite Espanola" in particular.
I'm not certain that I saw every one of the 12-15 films in the series (I think I missed INTOLERANCE), but I remember quite well that of all the films I saw, only one, SALLY OF THE SAWDUST, an early W.C. Fields film, had an organ score rather than piano. So, there's at least the possibility that a few more Perry piano score suites could see a CD release someday. Here's hoping for SON OF THE SHEIK and BROKEN BLOSSOMS!!!!
