Evermore
Editorial Reviews
Marty Hughleys Pick for NXNW 99 in The Oregonian
A Los Angeles rock band with one self-released album to its credit, this is the kind of act you might well catch on MTV in a year or two and wonder where they'd been hiding
Bill Dunn, San Gabriel Valley Weekly
It is immensely satisfying on many levels to the point where you can put in the CD and play it from end to end and by the time it is over you find yourself wanting more.
Album Description
"The Maxfield Rabbit's release Evermore is an intimate portrait of relationship pain wrapped in a perfectly recorded and written pop/rock format - with female vocals that cut through like a skewer through plastic wrap - with hints of Allanis and a pure sweet sound that departs from the angst on a path forged with originality by singer/songwriter, Julia Albert. The rhythm section, including guitar - is pure rock and roll ala Stones/Crows - with tasty mildly distorted LesPaul sounding axes and laid back just-behind-the beat 2 and 4. The bass is like a rock - supporting with occasional melodic runs that land deep in the pocket. Acoustic tracks are speckled throughout. Track 10, It's All Right By Me, is a slow groover with a Leaving Las Vegas message of acceptance that rings true and with a huge sense of love relief, 'I don't want to own you, I shouldn't have to own you, to keep every moment sweet, and I don't want to change you, cuz anyway I'd make you isn't what you would be'. The final track, I Fail the Words, is an intelligent and insightful revelation of what clogs most relationship drains, as the heroine tries to find the right words to comfort her partner, 'you hurt my feelings and God I still need you, I fake the truth to comfort me, I can't seem to choose, I fail the words to comfort you, I can't seem to choose a side.' The tune also includes a cool wah-wah motif of a guitar line - that ads a certain musical class to the mix. The highlight of the CD is the fourth track, a duet called "Drunk". The male and female vocals speak to each other with sentiment that mixes alcohol with marriage proposals - all with an origin that the two need each other through the sorrow they've shared and bring to the table, 'you keep coming back to this fate of mine. . you're right when you're mine, why don't you want me, please don't go, you need my sorrow. .i can't find happy.' Great melody and haunting dysfunction/love mix. This is a touching and insanely accurate record in its reflection on relationships - great musicianship and sincerity, maturity and unpretentious delivery - expertly recorded with subtle Maxfield Rabbit class. earBuzz.com

Customer Reviews:
Rousing little Number With a Name that Infers Eternity.......2007-01-30
I discovered this little gem through the burgeoning industry of online music and liked a few of the songs so much that I had to rush out to Amazon to spend my consumer dollars wisely. And wise it was dear listeners. It seems like some really good music gets made down under...New Zealand that is mate. Evermore consists of three brothers from that island country south of the equator. And get this...they were all aged 17-21 when making this album "Dreams." Wow! That's some serious music writing and making chops for such a tender young age.
As far as the sound goes, let me see who to compare it to. Comparisons for music get made to help other categorize music. Beware though when too many comparisons get made as the artist may just be derivative through imitation and not wholly and uniquely original. I'm not sure that is the case with Evermore but they do have a well produced sound that does sound distinctly like a few other bands. Imagine if you will a cocktail party where the drinks float free, tongues loosened, talk ensues. Bono and the Edge start talking with Chris Martin from Coldplay. And what do you know Matthew Bellamy from the UK's pop super group Muse join in the conversation. They all get 10 sheets to the wind wasted and start jamming. They have awesome material and awesome songs but low and behold before they cut it to CD...they find some youngsters from New Zealand, Evermore, are already doing what they just created...only better. There that's the Evermore sound on "Dreams."
The standout tracks here are "For One Day," "Everyone Moving On," and "Are You Satisfied?" "Everyone Moving On," in fact is a phenomenal song that should be blazing up the airwaves the world over, getting downloaded at incredible rates. If there is a downside to the album I guess its that the sound comes off a little too polished in places and tends towards the appeal of the 30-something soccer mom crowd. But hey...popularity isn't a bad thing. Those soccer moms need some tunes to jam to as they are driving their Chevy Suburbans around. You know something to drown out the screaming young ones in the back. It's better than the Rolling Stones method of "Mother's Little Helper," after all.
Get Evermore's "Dreams," from Amazon. You won't regret it. --MMW
A dreamy album.......2006-10-30
This album has a theme to it, a dreamy feel which at first listen every song sounds the same, but the more you listen to it, the more the songs grow on you and you will never get the Evermore sound out of your head. They have a very unique sound, unlike any other band in the world at the moment. As soon as you hear their songs on the radio you know it is them straight away. This is not a bad thing however. These guys have been around music their whole lives, being raised and home schooled on a farm in Fielding, New Zealand, qrowing up listening to their parents records of Led Zeppelin, The Who, Pink Floyd Bob Dylan and The kinks, you can also hear later influences such as Coldplay, Radiohead and Muse splashed throughout their music as well. They have a very spacious sound and the album has an atmospheric feel to it. This band of brothers are going to enjoy much more success in years to come, with every album they are going to get better and better, but its hard to see how they can follow up such a brilliant debut effort. I am proud to have had the chance to have seen them live and they are excellent, I can't wait to see them again. Also worth getting hold of their singles as the B-sides they release are just as good as their LP tracks.
Atmospheric melodies make Dreams a top album.......2006-07-18
Look as well as listen. Dreams lyrics are rich in visual imagery, truly making this a dream album.
Each track dovetails to the next, giving the collection a unified, narrative effect.
Great Band - BUT.......2006-06-07
Evermore are a great band but I need to set the record straight, they're from New Zealand not Australia
Worth checking out.......2006-05-24
My sister who lives in Australia told me to check out these guys awhile ago. Apperantly they are massive in Australia but I had never heard of them. A couple weeks ago Amazon.com sent me an email alerting me that the album was on sale this week and I pre-ordered (thanks Amazon). I love "It's Too Late" and made it the profile song for my Myspace page. Imagine Pink Floyd crossed with The Secret Machines crossed with Muse. There are a bit too many acoustic guitars sometimes but that is just my opinion. I highly recommend it.

Album Description
Sophomore album by this New Zealand Alternative Pop/Rock trio of brothers, who have won numerous NZ and Australian music awards since the release of their debut album, Dreams. Although not as atmospheric as their debut, the songs here have much more depth to them. Warner. 2006.
Album Details
The Three Hume Brothers of Evermore have Come a Long Way Since the Release of their Debut Album Dreams. It's a Far Cry from their Humble and Rain-drenched Beginnings in Rural New Zealand, and it all Culminates in their New Album, Real Life. The Writing and Initial Recording of "Real Life" Took Place in the Isolation of their Central Coast Abode, an Isolation the Boys were Not Only Used To, but Actively Encouraged. Separating Into Different Rooms, They Each Had their Own Private Recording Studio in Miniature, Working on Tracks Solo Before Bringing them Together for the Evermore Polish. Respected Engineer John Alagia (Who Mixed Dreams, and Has Worked with Acts Like John Mayer, Dave Matthews Band and Ben Folds) was Chosen for the Job for his Twiddling Tenacity and his Striking Good Looks. But Perhaps the Main Difference Between the Two Albums is in the Songs Themselves.
Customer Reviews:
Exceptionally good band !!.......2007-02-17
Evermore is an exceptionally good band, and Real Life is their second studio album, released in July 2006. Comprising brothers Jon, Peter and Dann Hume, Evermore hails from New Zealand's North Island, and has been very successful in Australia and New Zealand. Their music deserves to reach a worldwide audience. All three brothers are songwriters, and though eldest brother Jon does most of the singing, it is possible to distinguish the three voices at work here.
Real Life opens with a powerful and positive title tune, which might be about waking up from one's Dreams and "stepping into the light" of one's adult Real Life. It segues into the hit single Running - an anthemic, confident rock song with a memorable chorus. This song received tons of airplay on Australian radio in 2006, making it one of the year's best known pop hits. Current single Light Surrounding You is a melodic winner that has gone even further up the chart and is sitting this week at #1 on the Australian singles chart. My favourite song on here is the fantastic The Great Unknown. The guitar sound on this track is reminiscent of U2, and, honestly , this is one of the best songs I heard in years, and I played this track heaps of times in August 2006 after buying my copy of the CD. Some slower songs like Afloat are balanced by loud , guitar based rock like Unbreakable and fine songs like My Guiding Light, and there are some melancholy moments too. Overall though, this album is catchier even than Evermore's 2004 debut CD Dreams, and a little more optimistic and "mainstream" in tone.
I saw Evermore in concert here in Hobart, Tasmania in September 2006, and can confirm that they are a great live act. The Hume brothers, whom I briefly met and talked to after the show, are talented and pleasingly down-to-earth about their music , and deserve a long and successful career. Definitely go and buy a copy of Real Life !!
Highly Recommended for rock and pop fans . 5 Stars from me
I guess "Real Life" is happier than their "Dreams".......2006-12-12
The sunny disposition of "Real Life" came as a bit of a shock the first listen through. The minor chords and deep moods from their previous album, "Dreams", has been replaced with optimistic harmony. I miss the emotional wailing that brought such honesty to their previous work. Their angst is mysteriously lacking through most of "Real Life" and only makes an appearance in latter tracks like "The Only One I See". While not as storytelling, "Real Life" does have memorable tracks and a much more polished pop sound. Evermore will forever remind me of The Verve... and that's a good thing.
From Dreams to Real Life.......2006-08-21
Evermore just keeps getting better with each album. I loved Dreams and have given it to friends and family for gifts. When Real Life came out I was again blown away. My favorite songs on the album are Running, My Guiding Light, The Only One I See, Unbreakable, Never Let You Go. Actually, I can't choose a favorite. They are all so wonderful. I would definately recommend this album and have already started giving it as gifts to family and friends. What better gift than to share the music you love.

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.
If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."
Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

Mixed feelings.......2005-10-05
This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.
Your love for this superb collection will be here to stay..........2002-07-18
The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!
He's done it again.......2002-07-15
Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.
This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.
Way to go Michael, you've done it again!
Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10
There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.
This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.
This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!
Bravo Rhino!
A beautiful 2 disc CD-another hit for Michael.......2002-06-09
I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

Excellent performer.......2007-03-09
This plates are wonderful. I was charmed, and when I close my eyes now, I see scenes with American in Paris or Porgy and Bess but my favorite piece of music is Rhapsody in Blue. It's more than excellent is fantastic. Jack Gibbons perfectly feels the unique tone Gershwin's music, the mixture rythms of jazz with influences of impressionists and clear and beauty melodies.
I'm fascinating.

Gibbons' undertaking is unique: to reconstruct and then execute and record the note-for-note playing of Gershwin as documented on the composers' piano rolls, sound recordings and certain published arrangements. I agree with the reviewer who points out that the result is like a library and not a recital you sit back and listen to (or get up and dance to). In fact Gibbons does some editing of his "library" now and then, and clearly documents it in his liner notes: in some reconstructions he augments accompaniment effects and even the melodic line itself. I don't mind that at all, especially as Gibbons scrupulously accounts for such tampering in his liner notes; but it seems to me that it is in this area of "tampering" that Gibbons the artist is asserting himself...which of course undermines the "library", the "historical archive": you have to search and read a bit to find out when you're hearing only Gershwin and when you're hearing some added Gibbons. I don't mind; Gibbons is a remarkable artist in his own right, not merely an impeccable documentarian. For sheer generosity of production Gibbons' Gershwin must also be unique: 4 cd's, scholar-level liner notes (yes, you need a magnifying glass to read them), and rock-bottom bargain price.
Gershwin historical, manic, perfect, archival.......2006-06-12
First: this is 4 high-end produced cd's (in low-end jewel cases) for the price of 2. The liner notes of all 4 cd's are condensed in a booklet of microscopic print, so you may need to spend the savings on a magnifying glass. MONEY WELL SPENT.
Second: Jack Gibbons plays (and has recorded) the Alkan op 39 etudes (he probably plays a lot more Alkan than that). For those of you not in the know, this is to say he has world-class chops, indeed history-class (Liszt, who never played his friend Alkan, at least in public). But it's also to say that Gibbons knows how to interpret and personalize fantastically difficult piano music. For me, his Alkan op 39 is personal and passionate and real (contrast the facile and over-pedalled Hamelin and the just-the-notes-ma'me Ringeissen). An appreciation of Gibbons' Alkan is important here because while his Alkan is uniquely personal (as such music must be, no matter how hard it is to play) his Gershwin is deliberately impersonal...which is to say: no pianist, no singer would want to reproduce what Gibbons has given us in these 4 cd's, and in fact few listeners will be able to listen for long to these 4 cd's without a respite, a break , some silence, some minimal styling from somebody (anybody) else...which brings me to
Third: This is an archive, not a recital. This is a library, not a program. There is no track-by-track contrast of moods here, no track-by-track concession to easy listening, varied delight, any more than a library shelf of novels is alphabetized by authors' last names as a concession to mood or fancy or taste of the searching patron. This is the documented Gershwin in his recording mode: manic, notey, clever, "on", and never, as generations of stylists found in him, ravishing, tender, longing, sweet, glad, hopeful...person-to-person, in a word. I can listen to these cd's about half an hour at a time, max. This is Gerwhsin, not Gibbons. And this is just one side of Gershwin. He died at 38, in the summer. Brain tumor. A lot of pain.
Finally, Jack Gibbons has given the world a uniquely valuable and easily available resource. Gibbons could now do us a service by playing us some Gershwin as he feels it, as it hits him and makes him sing (as Gershwin, our American Schubert, does to all of us, and as I think Alkan has done to Gibbons). I would love to see a Gershwin stylings by Gibbons now that Gibbons himself has made sure Gershwin in his authenticity is safe and sound.
Definative.......2005-07-23
Here's the whole Gershwin catalog at a great price... Five plus hours of bliss. Definately five stars!
Gibbons, according to a family friend and biographer Edward jablonski "recreates Gershwin's style." I'll never know. I can say this is a lively recording and has the perfect balance. It's neither stuffy and plodding or cute.

One Short Song alonemakes this worth having.......2005-04-17
Ok the Version of Zeppelins Battle of Evermore will draw many and the funky guitar work on Papa Was Rolling stone is great and the there's an almost acoustic Crazy on You (which never took off for me) but the real draw for me on this was their cover of Todd Rundgren's Love of the Common Man...worth the price of admission for the shortest cut on the CD!!

Glass Hammer - Walter Moore Brings The Band To A New Level.......2007-04-18
This may be my favorite Glass Hammer disc. Vocalist Walter Moore is brought in on this one, and for me it makes a huge difference. Moore has a voice similar to Steve Walsh from Kansas. His vocals mesh perfectly with the music on this one and in my opinion brings the band to a higher level. In fact quite a bit of this album reminds me of Kansas (without the violin). I think this is the album where Glass Hammer first really put their sound together for the first time. The album is another concept piece that follows a sculptor who sculpts a woman and brings her to life, only to have her leave him. It is basically a similar story to the Yes epic "Turn Of The Century" with a slight nod toward Mary Shelly's "Frankenstein". The music by Babb and Schendel is all top notch neo progressive rock. David Carter (from Babb and Schedel's prog metal project Wyzards) is on hand for this album as well, and adds some really terrific guitar to various parts of the disc. This one seems to get very mixed feelings from Glass Hammer fans. Some absolutely loath it as the band's weakest album while others heap praise upon it. There does not seem to be a lot of middle ground on this one. For me, it remains one of my favorite Glass Hammer discs and I enjoy pulling it out every once in a while.
a lame prog cd.......2002-10-31
I like glass hammer, but this cd sucks. There is only one I like on this cd called the conflict.Glas Hammer's new one calledLex Rex is their best one so far.I also like their other one before Lex Rex called Chronometree.I wastd money on On To Evermore. My favourite band for modern 70s prog rock is Spock's Beard.I recomend getting the most recent 2 Glass Hammer cds,and everything by Spock's Beard.
A big disappointment.......2002-01-06
I loved "Chronometree" and had high expectations for this album. In short, they were not met. The music is dull and seems slaved to/constrained by a completely unoriginal narrative that runs through the album. The lyrics strike me as embarassingly over-sentimental. I think the word I'm looking for is "schmalzty"?
But then again, I never could get into the whole "rock opera" genre - if that's what this is attempting to be.
Great, great, great !!!.......2002-01-03
This is the very first time I log into Amazon's site exclusively to write a review. This state of fascination and musical pleasure comes from listening to this album... I can barely explain it in my native spanish language, so imagine trying to do so in english.
These four american guys have perfectly catched the mood of a proggresive line once traced by great bands like Kansas -even Schendel's voice in The Conflict resembles that of Steve Walsh- Genesis or EL&P.
The inclusion of mandoline, flute and other acoustic ¨vintage¨ instrumens gave some tracks in this album that soft mediaeval tune so beloved by many prog fans around the world. Any prog lover should give this album a chance to spin in his/her CD player.
The track Arianna -almost 17 minutes long- is a very beautiful masterpiece that combines the delicacy and finesse of piano solo passages with the power of the full band.
Nice to realize a 10th ¨bonus¨ 1:22 minutes track called Wind, and not mentioned in the CD booklet, is includad in the end of the disc.
I hope they record CD's forevermore!.......2001-07-09
The more I listen to it, the more I like it. It has great playing, great singing, great arranging, great tunes, great lyrics, and a great story... what's not to like? I will definitely check out their other albums. Prog on!
