SANTA CRUZ METRO
Riff Raff 500 avoids the sophomores jinx on "Watch Your Back". release by the recently resuscitated Half Pint Records.
About the Artist
Riff Raff 500 is based in Santa Cruz California.Influenced by a large and diverse group of bands (The Misfits, The Reverend Horton Heat, Metallica, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Henry Rollins, John Lee Hooker, Robert Johnson and others) Riff Raff has developed a unique hybrid sound. A melting pot of punk, blues, surf, rockabilly and hard-core. A sound uniquely their own and hard to compare with any other band Riff Raff 500 was formed by Mav (vocals & lead guitar) and Paul (bass) in 1992. They had no... read more
Album Description
Full throttle "Rock N Roll Punk" is about the only way you can describe their sound. RUSS RANKIN of Good Riddance produced the new album "Watch Your Back". This effort captures a sound that proves Riff Raff 500's trademark assault off piston-fueled punk rock is alive and well. Songs like "Painkiller", "Better Of Dead" and "Falling Down" stick with their guitar-driven, rapid-fire tradition. "Blessed Days" focuses less on guitar, letting the drums and bass drive the song. The result is a leaner, cleaner and meaner sound.

Houston-born blues showman Guitar Shorty, who once taught his young brother-in-law Jimi Hendrix a few stage tricks, has been on the scene since 1957, blasting out rocking blues with over-the-top enthusiasm. His recording career, highlighted by a trio of fine Black Top releases in the '90s, has been unfortunately limited, but Watch Your Back might finally put him in the spotlight. Much of the material, except for muscular reworkings of Van Morrison's "I've Been Working" and the recently discofied Elvis hit "A Little Less Conversation," comes from his producer and pianist Jesse Harms, and it effectively showcases Shorty's aggressive approach: a big sound short on subtlety but permeated with passionate vocals and searing guitar work. He simply overpowers the songs with his energy, and you can either go with the flow or get swept aside by its immediacy. The music is uniformly loud and in your face, just as you would expect from such an extroverted entertainer, and, more often than not, its sheer intensity overcomes any musical shortcomings. --Michael Point
Customer Reviews:
Best Guitar Shorty disc by far.......2007-05-14
I've been a Guitar Shorty fan for more than 10 years, having seen him at the Rhythm Room in Phoenix, AZ several times. I own all of his previous CDs and this one is definitely a cut above. Shorty has become at least partially "big time" and that's a double-edged sword for me: fewer and fewer appearances at the Rhythm Room, but the best-produced discs he's ever done. I'm happy to know he's made it, it couldn't happen to a nicer guy.
Killer Guitar Work.......2007-05-07
This guy can play. I like this CD a lot...but his new one, WE THE PEOPLE, is even better.
EXPERT BLUESMAN.......2007-03-09
Guitar Shorty has really ripped on this one. The Production is excellent and the whole Album has a casual intensity that is very appealing. If you like the blues then this Album is a must for your collection.
RICK SHAQ GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "SHORTY COMES UP TALL, BUT HAS ROOM TO GROW!".......2007-01-26
Shaq takes his blues reviewing, very seriously, and I believe the fan base that is growing for my reviews, wants accurate opinions. I want my readers to know that if Shaq, "The King Of The World Blues Reviewer", gives a five, it is really a five! This CD is a 4. That means you should buy it. But it is not a 5 like some of Shaq's other reviews, i.e.: "In Session", "Blues Deluxe", etc. Shorty, is a blues man at heart, and puts all of himself into his music. His voice is not his greatest attribute, but he has great humor, if you listen to his lyrics on this and his other CD's. (Which Shaq already owns, but hasn't had time to review for you yet.) As blues CD's go, most of these are shorter songs, and are in the 3 min 12 second to a long of 5 min 45 seconds. I wouldn't call Shorty's songs on this CD true blues; I'd call it kind of a rock/blues. This is a fun CD, and if you think #9 sounds familiar, it should. It was originally recorded by Elvis Presley (A Little Less Conversation), and is now the theme song for the hit TV show "Las Vegas". Only Shaq gives you all these interesting details along with his reviews! Hoo! Haa!
Should have bought this much sooner.......2006-07-10
I generaly stay away from releases that ride on someones fame from a bygone era. Age diminishes their skills and a lot of the releases are done purely from memory. How wrong could I be. This man could be in his 20's / 30's or 40's.....whatever,and he would still be a brilliant blues man. Awesome guitar tone and phrasing that does not originate in the 50's, but is as fresh as the best of the young guns. Sensational material and lyrics that take a humorous and insightful look at life. If you are into the guitar or the blues, don't hesitate - 5 stars all the way.

Customer Reviews:
Great, obscure old Berlin!.......2002-08-07
As a cast member on this album, I'm a little bit biased, but it's this is really a chance to get a listen to some really fabulous Berlin. This is Berlin's first Broadway show and has some great gems like "Have the Boys Around Me" and a bunch of great catchy tunes. It's a wide mix of Berlin and if you're a big fan, it's a great chance to hear him in still somewhat developmental stages. A couple songs from this show were later re-worked and put into other shows. It's also has a great feel for the period and shows the influences around the time he was writing: opera (Opera Melody), cowboys (I Gotta Go Back to Texas) and Hawaii (Honolulu Girls). It's a keeper!
Also on this CD is a great tribute to Berlin's counterpoint tunes. It's a mix of all three of the greats: Simple Melody, Old Fashioned Wedding, and Just in Love. Sung individually and then all three together! You won't get that anywhere else.

THE ska cd for your collection.......2007-03-18
ok folks -
this is my first review & had to add my input here cuz only ONE other review currently exists. Bloody shame, cuz THIS cd is possibly the BEST ska music ever produced and without a doubt, the best thing to ever have come out of canada. Yeah, I know... ska music from canada?? That is like rockabilly form the ukraine, but trust me here - I've been a ska fan for over two and a half decades, and no one mixes it up like the kingpins. The vocals swoon you like the best of the big band era, while tones of 60's garage surf music interwine flawlessly with the irresistable skankin' beat of horns & reggae influences, make your feet do the two-tone groove like no other. Forget the specials and the selector or the english beat - this cd outshines them all. THIS is the ska cd you should own, if no other.
lots of ska on mine please.......1998-11-05
This is no doubt the best canadian ska band. This band knows how to get you to move. I found myself skankin' without even realizing it. This c.d. has not left my ghetto blaster for 2 months and I don't see it eaving anytime soon.

damn good.......2000-10-24
Riff Raff 500 does it again with their second release. they have a much cleaner sound than their first album, "Kustom Made Hell" (done D.I.Y. under the name Riff Raff), but they don't relinquish the hard, dark edge that made them my favorite band in the first place. their CD's are just an advertisement for their killer live shows, which is how it should be...they are up there with bands like face to face and bad religion in terms of power, emotion, and being able to get the crowd singing and moshing along.i know these boys personally, and they rock, so if your in santa cruz, check em out!
