About the Artist
BIOGRAPHY

Hailing from a small town on the Eastern Shore of MD (born and bred), it comes as no surprise that Laura Shawen cut her musical teeth on the likes of Joplin, The Doors and Heart. Her first musical project came at age 16 as a singer for a cover band, but the creative side of her was still left wanting. The drawback of living in such a region is the shortage of original venues and support. So, at 20, Shawen left for the closest big city to pursue her craft. The city was Washington, DC and the craft was singer/songwriter. Thus began an odyssey through one city after another, one musician after another, one album after another. The result is a seasoned musician and the mature music she creates today. Throughout the years, Shawen has had the pleasure of playing such venues in the Washington/Baltimore area as the 9:30 Club, Bayou, Black Cat, 8x10, and inumerable smaller rooms. Elsewhere, she has graced the stages of CBGB and the Bitter End in New York, Eddie’s Attic in Atlanta and various clubs in Los Angeles including The Martini Lounge and The Gig Hollywood. With four self-produced albums under her belt as well as critical acclaim from The Washington Times, The Washington Post and others, Shawen continues to provide substantial music for intelligent listeners. Her music is a mix of rock, pop, and blues that insists on defying categorization, but not the American music tradition of opening up new terrain in genre and emotion. Laura Shawen is now exploring new places in music armed with the following players:

Geoffrey Gill-Bass & Vocals Javier Rivera-Drums Darrell Bailey-Lead Guitar Laura intends to explore her creativity to the fullest, with another release due out in the Spring of 2001. With her music available on independent and college radio nationally, the addition of MP3 into the picture and the band switching to a primarily touring lifestyle, Laura Shawen hopes to further extend the fan base and market her music with renewed fervor.

4 out of 5 stars Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13

This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28

Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.

5 out of 5 stars "essential film scores from 1939 to 2004 ~ Incredible Music".......2005-05-16

When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.

Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.

If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."

Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings.......2005-10-05

This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.

5 out of 5 stars Your love for this superb collection will be here to stay..........2002-07-18

The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!

5 out of 5 stars He's done it again.......2002-07-15

Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.

This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.

Way to go Michael, you've done it again!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10

There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.

This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.

This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!
Bravo Rhino!

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful 2 disc CD-another hit for Michael.......2002-06-09

I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

4 out of 5 stars vintage Hugh Martin score a complete delight.......2004-12-23

LOVE FROM JUDY, based on Jean Webster's novel 'Daddy Long Legs', is pure vintage Hugh Martin. The show never made it to Broadway, instead enjoying a sold-out London season and an extensive provincial tour.

Jean Carson played Jerusha Abbott, an orphan at the John Grier Home who is mysteriously supported by a never-named benefactor. June Whitfield, Johnny Brandon, Adelaide Hall and Bill O'Connor round out the strong leading cast. Barbara Windsor played one of the orphans (for some interesting backstage reminisces about LOVE FROM JUDY check out Barbara Windsor's autobiography 'All of Me').

The Hugh Martin-Jack Gray score is quite lovely from what is featured on this disc (the recordings were originally designed to fit 4 sides of a set of 78's). LOVE FROM JUDY runs a scant 20 minutes, so the disc has been filled out with extensive bonus material.

We get Jean Carson singing "A Kiss to Build a Dream On", "Hug Me a Hug" and "Barrels and Barrels of Roses" (on the 2 former tracks she's joined by her then-husband Bill Lowe); Johnny Brandon singing 5 numbers including his mega-hit "Glow Worm"; and Adelaide Hall singing 2 great numbers. June Whitfield sings 5 numbers including two songs from GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES!

There are also selections from the Frank Loesser score of HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN; and a full-cast presentation of numbers from Disney's PETER PAN (both feature Jean Carson and Johnny Brandon).

5 out of 5 stars long time fan.......2000-05-29

fleming actually reached down and held my hand while singing "love songs" at a free concert in riverfront park, Nashville. i have been a long time fan. as soon as i heard that the new cd was coming out i ran out and bought it. i was definately not dissapointed. this recent recording is as involved as it gets. inspired by john steinbecks novel, "the pearl", is as impressive lyricly as it is musicly. i was way off of base when i was guessing what "ugly girl" would be about. i was assuming that fleming was giving us a little insight into her soul. i heard it and had to laugh out loud. not just for the content of the song but that i could be so far off. fleming as i hope you already know is one of the most beautiful women gracing this planet. small in stature with a huge personality and stage presence. my recomendation is to get your hands on anything that these people have anything to do with. they succed in all ventures. i absolutely love these guys. given the oppurtunity i promise you wil as well.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC.......2000-04-27

This is a fantastic single. If you haven't heard this hilarious single i suggest you buy it. If you have heardf it then i suggest you buy the album now!

1 out of 5 stars Dumb goofy novelty song from a genuinely talented band.......2000-01-28

Fleming and John have such a large amount of talent that it tanks to have to sit by and watch them market a worthless novelty song as if it was indicative of their songwriting abilities. This is by far the weakest song on their album, with dorky background vocals, weak groove, and horrid lyrics. Especially horrible since they're supposedly a Christian band, which is supposed to tout love and grace, not judgmentalism, vanity, and shallowness. If they want to be succesful in the long run, they should push their A material, like the first track, "I'm so small."

3 out of 5 stars Hilarious-hilarious-hilarious.......1999-11-03

When i first heard this song i thought it was hilarous. Then i was talking to a friend and she was talking about how her boyfriend left her for some ugly girl. I started laughing and told her about the song she loved it.

5 out of 5 stars I laughed, I cried, it's awesome.......1999-10-15

I first heard this song early in the morning getting ready to go to work... didn't quite catch the lyrics the first time but the melody got to me... then the second time i heard it... i cracked up... rolling on the floor... laughing so hard that i cried... like i said... i laughed, i cried, it's awesome...

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Intense emotion; profoundly personal.......2004-01-16

Both Ugly Girl and Shawen's later CD, Deliver Me, are packed with songs so powerful in their emotional immediacy that at times the skin prickles. "Among the living" is a defiant shout against death; "Ugly Girl" tears open the angry, sad, and star-struck heart of a woman in love with an idol; the overwhelming refrain of "Only you" sweeps us into a whirlpool of obsessive love. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars haunting...clever...powerhouse rock at its best!.......2000-12-14

It's probably not the amazing guitar riffs and lyrics that grab your attention when you hear the Laura Shawen Band. More than likely it is Laura's intense vocal style, her deep vibratto is hard to match and it helps her bring depth to songs like "Sweet" and "Burn". The songs on this album are incredible and I can only imagine how they must sound live. Songs like "Shakespeare's Lover" are pure classic rock while "Burn" and "Ugly Girl" are cutting-edge alternative. This is definatly worth checking out!!!
