Tin Man
Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
What does it take to lure an American alt-pop recording artist and theater director living and working in Germany back to the U.S.? Nothing, really, admits Arthur Shettle as he reflects on his re-entry into the American music scene. Recording and producing overseas, Shettle says, has offered me some unique musical perspectives--things which I have cranked back into this current project. The project he speaks of is the 12 song CD, Tin Man-- a smart, universal collection of art-rock and pop grooves that is scheduled for release in the summer of 2000. Though Tin Man could be considered his debut, Shettle is no newcomer to the rock world. He entered the music scene in the late 80s while a theater student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill--a fortuitous college selection as Chapel Hill was at the time becoming one of the premier music spots in the country. Shettle was the brainstorm behind the successful band Ex Libris, a band with a solid fan base, regular commercial air play, and eventually a record deal with BMC Records of Raleigh, North Carolina. As divergent musical styles led the band members to later pursue solo careers, Shettle moved to New York City to begin his own. There, he managed to juggle a performing arts career; composing, producing, and gigging as both actor and musician . He even had a stint as a drummer for the band Beggars Banquet, sharing studio space with Run DMC at the time.
Theater and Music eventually led him to Harvard University where, as a graduate student, he was hired as an Artist-in-Residence. Shettle continued writing music and used many of his avant-garde recordings for his own theater productions in the U.S. and Germany. Through these musical experiences, Shettle began his journey back to the mainstream music scene and started writing and recording new material which would later be the groundwork for his current project. After winning a European award for the original soundtrack of his own Romeo & Juliet production, he devoted more time to his studio work, teaming up with American drummer and studio engineer Nick Burnett and German producer Bodo Strecke.
A solo artist in every sense of the word, Shettle is both the instrumentalist and vocalist for all his work--though he does concede the drums to Burnett in the studio. Ironically, states Shettle, stylistic diversity can come from the experience of being a solo artist. Theres an inherent continuity of composition because its just me, but the songs are all quite varied. In fact, a listening session with the new CD invites hints of Roxy Music (Tin Man) to the hyper slam-rock of Lenny Kravitz (Round) to the dirty retro-mixed sound of Garbage (Slave). I go in lots of different directions, and Im happy about it, Shettle explains.
Pop culture jabs, taboos, Woody Allen, silly white people, and a ripping song with Shakespeare lyrics, carry this album gracefully into unusual yet refreshing territory. Singable pop hooks with an intelligent art-rock feel will stand as a reminder that Arthur Shettle with his debut Tin Man is definitely staying put.

The team of composer Jerry Bock and lyricist Sheldon Harnick came up with only six shows--but what shows! In addition to the phenomenally successful Fiddler on the Roof, aficionados usually gush about 1963's She Loves Me and 1959's Fiorello!. The latter turned a not particularly appetizing topic--the years leading to Fiorello LaGuardia's election as mayor of New York--into a great musical. (It even won the Pulitzer Prize for drama, only the third musical to do so.) Harnick and Bock's versatility was in evidence as they wrote numbers in every Broadway style: novelty, ballad (about sweatshops), duet (the absurdly catchy and funny "Marie's Law"), and, of course, a rousing number that doesn't really fit anywhere but is so good that it simply must be included (Eileen Rodgers's "Gentleman Jimmy"). This may be one of the wittiest, most melodic shows you've never heard. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Fiorello.......2007-03-09
Great music. Only; I wish I had a DVD of the show.....
A sleeper of the first order.......2007-03-06
Fiorello is a very dark comedy about the corrupt back-room politics, croneyism, and skulduggery surrounding Fiorello laGuardia's political career. Oh, and there's a romance thrown in. "Politics and Poker" in particular has a timely poignancy in light of the runup to the 2008 elections with Clinton, Obama, and -um - whoever the heck else is on the Democrat wanna-be list. I have to think there are some pretty stark parallels here. But then, that's what this timeless, delightful sleeper of an operetta is all about.
A new York-centric non-hit .......2006-11-15
This never rose to the level of a 'hit'. At this time (2006) it is dated
technically and artisticly. It didn't win in '59, there is little hope that it will be remembered fondly in '06.
In the end I bought it for archival purposes only and I'm being kind.
Laguardia isn't just an airport.......2006-08-07
Fiorello! was basically a play about New York City's great mayor, Fiorello Laguardia, that was turned into a musical by having an overture and 14 songs. Long ago, back in the late 1950s, I saw it as a child and really liked it - I've always wondered what it would be like to hear it again. Well, it is nothing less than spectacular! It has the best song about politcal corruption (!) ever written, Little Tin Box; a great song about a broken date, Marie's Law; a lyrical paean to back-room politics, Politics and Poker; and 11 others, all equally good (in fact, there's not a single dud in the score - as you would expect since it was written by the writers who did Fiddler on the Roof). The voices are great, the lyrics are all to the point, the music is unforgettable, and, for all those who don't know the story, the disc notes are really helpful. Maybe this is politcs seen through rose-tinted glasses, but it's wonderful to hear!
a classic, underrated Broadway gem.......2003-11-04
FIORELLO! is a lovely, ahead-of-its-time musical, based on the career of New York mayor Fiorello La Guardia. It starred Tom Bosley as La Guardia with a dream cast including Ellen Hanley, Pat Stanley and Eileen Rodgers.
The score, an early collaboration from Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick (SHE LOVES ME, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF) is very strong, and includes several show-pieces like "Politics and Poker", "Little Tin Box" and "On the Side of the Angels".
Ellen Hanley (who had previously been criminally under-used as Polly Bergen's understudy in FIRST IMPRESSIONS) glows in the role of feisty Thea, the sweatshop workers' leader. She has two of the score's best ballads, "'Til Tomorrow" and "When Did I Fall in Love".
Pat Stanley (who earned a Tony for her performance in the disastrous GOLDILOCKS) gets the cute number "I Love a Cop". Eileen Rodgers (who later starred in a successful off-Broadway revival of ANYTHING GOES) sings the showstopping "Gentleman Jimmy", a manic flapper tune. FIORELLO! is a fantastic show in that it has no less than 3 strong female roles.
For those who only started following Tom Bosley's career during his 'Happy Days', the fact that he was a top-drawer musical theater talent will come as a big surprise. Bosley played the entire run of 795 performances. Bosley later made many more successful Broadway appearances including BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and (as of this review's writing) a triumphant stint in the Sam Mendes revival of CABARET.
This lovely reissue on the Angel Broadway label sounds as fresh as paint. An excellent remaster job and an excellent cast album.

I love Mannheim Steamroller's Christmas music, so I've been collecting their music for other holidays as well. I wish they'd avoided the occasional speaking parts in this but I love most of the musical parts. They did a good job on the Aaron Copland piece! I'll be listening to it other than on July 4th.

Interstellar travel in your headphones........2007-05-31
Well, Stargate SG.1 has finally ended after 10 seasons, and this soundtrack CD covers only the first two. I think there's room for a new CD or two, and hopefully the Stargate SG.1 people will get around to creating one.
Anyway, I've listened to this CD once so far and I was very impressed. The music really is enjoyable on its own, and I found myself listening to the Cold Lazerus music twice before I continued throught the rest of the CD.
Finally, don't think there isn't much music on this CD because of the small nunber of tracks. Many of these tracks are six to ten minutes long.
Stargate Music Album.......2007-05-12
Great CD throughout. It's a shame the show is being cancelled after 10 years but this music helps to keep the memory on.
Not as good as the 1st Music release.......2004-10-24
The best of Stargate SG-1 is infact a 9 track compilation of the 1st 2 seasons of the TV show. It's really not the best of Stargate. I rather enjoyed the 1st release namely called Music of Stargate SG-1 and the actual movie music-score. However I still enjoyed the music from several episodes of the 2nd season, most notable being the music suite of Hathor.
A fan of the TV show should be pleasantly surprised by the suites in this CD. It won't disapoint.
one for the fans.......2004-05-07
This CD is really one for the fans. If you've not watched Stargate SG-1 before, then it will be very limited in its' appeal.
I personally enjoyed the CD, as I could relate the music back to the particular episodes in which they appeared. Some of the tracks are sweet and melodic, others are more ominious, so it doesn't come up short on variety.
The music sounds, for the most part, rather sythesised (which is why, if you are used to sprawling epic soundtracks from mainstram movies, I generally don't recommend this if you have never watched the show). Tracks are usually a mixture of synthesised sounds combined with more organic notes from traditional instruments, creating a very "sci fi" sound.
This is a great CD to work and study to as it provides great background music without being too intrusive.
Sweet.......2004-02-23
This is a great CD. Just listing to it makes me feel like I'm watching the show.

Another strong Broadway by the Year.......2006-08-20
Scott Seigel's concerts, Broadway by the Year gather a group of the current crop of Broadway performers and turn them loose on songs from Musicals that opened during 1 year on Broadway. It helps that 1953 was a strong year musically, with Bernstein's Wonderful Town, Porter's Can Can, Kismet and Me and Juliet from Rogers and Hammerstein. Jule Styne also chimed in with Hazel Flagg which contains one almost standard "Every Street's a Boulevard in Old New York. Some great stuff on this album, wonderfully sung as almost always. I love this series and hope to acquire each and every one at some point.

Hopkins Classic Available on CD.......2007-06-28
Nicky Hopkins was one of the driving forces behind Quicksilver Messenger Servce, as well as a big, in demand session piano player. He just has this unique piano playing gift, and has a voice that is so distinctive. His voice really grows on you. This album is long gone from my collection, and it is nice to finally see it available on CD. The one song I have sung from time to time is Dolly....."Dolly, where are you? Dolly, come see me through. Dolly, I'm so in love with you....."
I will have to save a few pennies for this one, but I remember this being Nicky's best effort.

maurice jarre: the emotion and the strength.......2005-01-29
I am sure that anyone reading this review will agree with me on the fact that m. Jarre's status as a composer is beyond legend. What a pure genius. HOWEVER, I simply have to write this review to warn his fans what a huge disappointment this album is. Frist, the quality of the recording is tinny and insipid [I am not some picky audiophile, but live albums usually leave a lot to be desired]. Most important is that the arrangements and their performance by this orchestra is just totally unsatisfying. Lets face it, what we all love about Jarre is the power of his music in relationship to the films for which it was done. We want the evocative quality of the real scores, pretty much as they were for the films. You wont find it in this album[close your eyes and think of your favorite film score. You can hear it in your mind easily. now imagine hearing an album where the arrangement of it that you hear bears little relationship to what you lovingly remember. Thats the reason for my profound dissatisfaction]... So just buy the 'real' soundtracks and enjoy!
"Ageless Composer..Legendary Icon Extraordinaire..Jarre".......2002-01-21
Highly skilled composer one of the "Old Guard" film scoring Giants...belongs to a very exclusive club of longivity...creating some of the most brilliant scores ever to grace filmland...Mauice Jarre can write music for any story-line...from any country in the world...one who fits the bill of legendary icon in his most worthy profession...FILM COMPOSER EXTRAORDINAIRE!
Not being one so taken with LIVE RECORDINGS, but this 2-CD-Set has much merit, quality and enjoyment, all music composed and yes, conducted by MAURICE JARRE, with very capable musical organizations~ BBC Concert Orchestra,Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, how's that for a Grand Slam line up...but let's see what musical scores make the grade of "stand outs" and the ever popular "highlights".
Starting with the stand outs ~ "A PASSAGE TO INDIA"(1984), string section opens with counterpoints from percussion, giving you a sense of traveling through India, brass takes over with a main theme, gives the ten minute Suite body---"FATAL ATTRACTION" (1987), solo piano sends chills through your memories of the story line, almost textures of "Classical Jazz", blending eerie strings with muted brass joining in for substance, reminds me of some of 1940's murder mysteries with Bogart or Mitchum---"RYAN'S DAUGHTER"(1970), haunting theme with melodic overtones, give way to the percussion section, moving within the unforgettable melody always stumping the music fans, where have I heard this before?
What you've all been waiting for...the HIGHLIGHTS ~ "LAWRENCE OF ARABIA"(1962), exceptional score for this stunning film, won an Oscar for "Best Original Score 1962", percussion and brass draws you into the desert, living each passage from an unforgettable arrangement that sits high on the composers list on his achievements---but the one everyone remembers for orchestration, originality and lasting impression of "Classic Soundtracks" is "DR, ZHIVAGO"(1965), sweeping Russian melodies with poignant blends of the windwood sections, listen as the counterpoints abound reeking with passion as the love of two women for one man, the Main Theme is probably one of the most recognizable in the world.
Milan Records has given us an additonal score "SUNSHINE"(1999), a beautiful haunting score that has Jarre's signature in place, the chorus gives off a heavenly sound of "Pure Harmony", counter balanced by the orchestration, gotta love it!

Album Description
This 13-song debut release combines Irish/Scottish melodies with Eastern rhythms. The result is a fresh, modern musical approach that extends beyond traditional Celtic music. The CD contains original compositions and contemporary arrangements of traditional tunes and sets played using both electric (bass, guitar, keys) and acoustic instruments (flute, tin whistle, accordion, piano, guitar, tablas, bodhran, fiddle, drums, uilleann pipes) . . . plus a few surprises.
Customer Reviews:
saccharine.......2006-07-14
The instrumentals on this cd are okay, but the vocals are just sickeningly sweet. I listened to the cd twice because I wanted to like it based on all of the glowing reviews it has gotten. The vocals, especially on Braes O' Strathblane, were so saccharine, I had to turn it off. Throwing in a few scottish pronunciations done in an American accent just made it worse. I regret I wasted my money on this treacle.
Rock on Green Man!.......2001-11-12
I bought this CD a little over a year ago, and I still listen to it several times a week. It almost sounds better each time I listen to it. I love the mix of traditional irish melodies with new instruments and with other genres of music. I've been listening to some of the free downloads, and am hoping Green Man will make another CD!
Open your mind and heart to GREEN MAN.......2000-02-17
You will find that this is an amazing mix of celtic music with guitars and drums. A beautiful blend of traditional and non traditional which spices each and every song in this album. Soothing vocals adds to the already impressive sounds. They are definetely NOT a one hit wonder. A wonderful CD that I recommend to anyone that wants to go from the Orchestra to the EDGE!
Green Man is enchanting Celtic music........1999-08-03
Listening to it is delightful and stimulating, plus the musicianship is superb.
Great listening music to soothe the soul........1999-08-03
Green Man is an outstanding musical creation that will keep you listening. Vocals by April are beautiful.

More interesting (and--predictably--less mechanical) than his piano rolls, Gershwin Performs Gershwin showcases the Gershwin-conducted rehearsal sessions for Second Rhapsody and Porgy and Bess along with two Gershwin radio specials recorded in the early '30s titled Music by Gershwin. These are period pieces, for sure--the sound is shoddy, and the radio spots' commercials are as entrancing as the music that's being played. But, yes, that is Gershwin conducting and playing piano, and this is as close as we'll get to hearing these familiar tunes being played the way he wanted them. --Jason Verlinde
