Sound of Lies (Reis)
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
This 1997 release was slow to catch on with Jayhawks fans; the departure of founder-guitarist-vocalist Mark Olson seemed destined to mark the band as one that had seen better days. But not only do the impeccable country-rock leanings of singer/songwriter Gary Louris shine as always here, his vocals soar beautifully with pianist Karen Grotberg's (as they did with Olson's), and the band isn't shy about genre hopping. Psychedelic pop makes a cameo appearance ("Think About It"), Tom Petty-esque, AOR-friendly rock is perfected ("Big Star," "It's Up to You"), and gorgeous, genteel ballads ("Sound of Lies," "Trouble") continue to impress. Louris wears his heart on his sleeve in the raw-nerve musings of "Dying on the Vine," and "The Man Who Loved Life" is a perfect Jayhawks moment: a quiet, lone piano opens the song, which builds slowly with layers of vocals, guitar, and piano, resulting in a majestic coda. --Lorry Fleming

The Jayhawks were introduced to me by my brother a few years ago. The Sound of Lies completes my Jayhawks catalogue. I agree with some of the other reviewers when they write about each Jayhawks disc being strong but distinctly crafted works. Sound of Lies gets better with each listen. A great cd to play along with on your acoustic guitar!
Still My Favorite 'Hawks Disc.......2006-07-31
I just gave 5 stars. I don't do that. As so many were, I was infatuated with Green Grass and Town Halls when this came out. I bought it and was dismayed that there were no Olesons. Then I gave a serious listed and POW. Right in the kisser. Louris unleashed. I could go on about every song. I won't. I will mention 'Stick In The Mud'. Possibly one of the best songs written post Beatles.
Future top 100 best albums.......2006-07-14
Sometimes there lies in the rough a true diamond. I dont know how I came to hear this - I am not an Alt.country fan by and large but I wouldn't want to categorize this at all - just listened and listened and listened. It gets better and still seems timeless, beautiful lyrics, great music, vocals and I would figure its the best Jayhawks album by far. No filler, pure class all the way through and if you need something life affirming take a chance on this. It still blows my mind after all these years
A change of direction, but a truly strong band sound.......2006-07-09
Gary Louris had to steer the ship, after initially suggesting Olson's departure was the end of this band. What a smart move. His ascending to the conductor's chair was steady from the time he joined the band, and this album rewards the other members of the band for sticking around. There is truly a band sound that backs up the Louris songs here. Though the alt-country Olson harmonies are sorely missed, this slight change of direction actually works to bring out more of Gary's strengths outside of his fantastic guitar work, and, also reaffirms the band sound that was coming along with Tommorrow the Green Grass. Delightful for anyone who loves to listen to an album the old-fashioned way: Just put it on and play it through.
Lost classic.......2006-01-20
I give Sound of Lies 4 1/2 stars, actually. It's not quite perfect. I know there are diehard 'Hawks fans that love Bottomless Cup and Haywire and Dying on the Vine, but I think that, overall, those songs keep SOL from being a total masterpiece - if only because they're not quite on par with the other tracks, which by no means means they aren't good songs.
Okay, anyway: SOL is no place to start listening to the Jayhawks (Blue Earth is the only place to start if you want to do it right), but ignore this advice and just get the album if you've never heard it, or, hell, even if you've never heard the Jayhawks at all. Anybody that likes good smart pop and good smart lyrics will - should - be utterly blown away, because this album just keeps bludgeoning your head with subtle-but-heavy, layered, gorgeous, understated sonic hooks. Gary Louris, with this one, unlocked the chest that he'd been stashing full of his true nature while toiling (and keeping afloat) the Olson-led version of his band. Every song is a monster, with "Think About It" as the album's centerpiece and juggernaut - a flawless, menacing, melodic thing that gets in your head and festers, until you can't stop turning it up. Actually that kind of describes the rest of the songs, too. As much as I love the Olson era albums, and as good - no, as excellent - as they are, this one might be the shining star of the 'Hawks' catalogue. And nobody knows about it.
Maybe, though, that's a good thing. Perhaps the rock and roll gods (the ones who've kept the 'Hawks in purgatory ever since Hollywood Town Hall) may one day give the band their due and let them (or their estates) amass great royalties and riches and icon status. Lord knows they deserve it.

Customer Reviews:
John Taylor Feelings Are Good!.......2007-05-19
This is fantastic. John shows more of the punk, hard edge side of his music. This is a big departure from Duran Duran....and is sometimes very raw....but all John Taylor. Very cool!
Feelings can't be good if this is called music.......2000-05-30
In a nutshell, this cd leaves alot to be desired. You'd think if John left Duran Duran,he may offer something better.NOT! If you are looking for former band members who are truly talented, this is the wrong Taylor. Andy is your man for that. This is catterwaulling at it's absolute worst. John is making a miserable and embarassing(for us and himself) attempt to prove he's 2 things he's not.....David Bowie and talented. In short, he's no Simon LeBon and if you want an experience with unforgettably BAD music...buy this cd. I'd recommend early Duran Duran or Andy Taylor for more savvy listeners
Undoubtly Fantastic!.......2000-03-29
I really love this Album, and just as Much as all of Duran Duran's albums. It may seem rough or hard to listeners who haven't been or aren't at the moment Duran Duran fans. Duranies, have appercation for John's work, we know him and have faith in all of his work. As for the people out there critising John's lyrics, if you ever heard any of Duran duran's songs, you know they have their moments too. But That doesn't matter to me, I still love everything about John Taylor's album and Duran Duran's Albums. Never loose faith, Keep it up, John
Great performance by John.......2000-02-27
This is the first time that I have listened to JT sings, and he is a great performer. I also have brought his subsequently released two albums in Japanese version. I wish that he continue to be a dominating rock star for this decade as he and his Duran Duran did for the last twenty years.
...But it's *JOHN*.......1999-10-16
I must admit that I gave this cd away immediately after listening to it. The music is good, but the vocals are really rough, and the lyrics... But it is John, so I give him an extra star just for the effort.

somewhere between The Band, The Kinks, Otis Redding and the cast soundtrack to Cabaret.......2006-12-02
The Teenage Prayers arent just a band. They're Family.
And with a sound that lies somewhere between The Band, The Kinks, Otis Redding and the cast soundtrack to Cabaret, the Teenage Prayers are both oddly familiar and totally distinct.
The sweat starts up front: Tim Adams on the microphone, pushing his voice and body to the brink of soulful collapse, then pulling back to the sultry growl of a devilish crooner, ever reaching, ever searching for the secret of the Masters.
Then brother Terrence Adams: a curly-headed wraith on lead guitar, delivering smashed Keith Richards licks one minute and deranged Steve Cropper soul balladry the next, all the while singing, shrieking, creating.
Then cousin Kyle Chrise on bass: the one-man party, like some unholy union between Rick Danko and Bill Black gone amok on drugs as yet uninvented, belting out background vocals and keeping flawless time.
Kyle Wills on drums: the piston-engined spectacle of the Teenage Prayers, a relentless, unforgiving center of gravity around which the band revolves like an unkempt comet.
Remy Weber on keys - one part Bill Evans, one part Booker T. Jones. Wurlitzer 200A. Accept no substitute.
Formed in New York City, 2001, the Teenage Prayers rapidly evolved into the rock-(rock opera)-and-soul explosion that caught the ear of Solomon Burke, who flew the band out to LA to produce the final cut on their self-released debut record, TEN SONGS.
For their follow-up record, due for completion in Fall 2006, the Teenage Prayers enlisted as producer none other than the legendary founder of the Dream Syndicate, STEVE WYNN, who calls the Prayers his ..favorite band in NYC...
Now, with strong radio airplay from the likes of KEXP, WOXY, Minnesota Public Radio and the famed KCRW, the Teenage Prayers stand poised on the brink of a new kind of success, courting labels and distributors while continually expanding their touring base down the eastern seaboard, into the Midwest and beyond.
First CD from NYC Indie Band with Soul!.......2006-12-02
