Live at Chelmsford Prison [Live] [Original recording remastered]

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Although Johnny Rotten and company failed to amuse the monarchy, the Sex Pistols did manage to entertain 500 or so persons detained at Her Majesty's pleasure with a show at a top security prison in Chelmsford on September 17, 1976, three days before their fabled 100 Club gig and 21 days before signing to EMI. Interesting fact: the Pistols' nice-guy Paul Cook, who began his apprenticeship as an electrician at Watney's Brewers that very day, turned up drunk and proceeded to fall off his drum stool--an event sadly not captured on this mix-board recording. Much audio negligence is in evidence throughout--in fact, Glen Matlock's bass is completely inaudible. Still, this impudent live shambles has plenty of Rotten's lip and cackling menace and--while hardly as essential as Never Mind the Bollocks--reminds us just how nasty it all must have sounded in the very same week the Wurzels, Acker Bilk, and the Bay City Rollers were hogging the U.K. top 10. --Kevin Maidment

4 out of 5 stars Where's Glen Matlock?.......2003-12-12

If (as one review states) Glen Matlock later dubbed in his
bass, it's not on this recording.

Either the bass wasn't patched through the mixing board, or the soundman turned the bass input to zero.

I don't hear much if any audience noise at all (if this is faked,
again, as another reviewer stated, it sure is subtle).

The main problem with this Live CD is that there are gaps between
each song, rather than a continuous concert recording. There was
no reason to do this.

4 out of 5 stars a great live but it still could've been better.......2002-02-27

an excellent concert with dialogues with the audience but what was the use of changing the song order? The review included on the booklet tells you how it really was and the sound of the crowd confirms it. Still, it is pretty good.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Live CD. Fake crowd noise is annoying,.......2000-06-07

If you like the Pistols, you'll want this CD, but just the fact that the crowd noise was faked and dubbed in is somewhat annoying. All the stuff is pretty good for a live show and there's some nice twists to the pistols songs you know and love.

5 out of 5 stars The Pistols, Live with attitude.......2000-01-05

All the raw energy and agressive punk style of the Sex Pistols are captured perfectly on this CD. The guys are in-tune, on-key, and are running on pure anger. From Jon baiting the crowd of inmates, to Steve wailing out classic riffs, this one is an absolute classic, and its excellent sound quality for a live recording. For any new fans or Pistols freaks, this is worth picking up.

4 out of 5 stars Before Sid's time........1999-10-16

Actually the bass was dubbed on by Glen Matlock years after it was originaly recorded.
