Nothing Inside seem to operate from the notion that the only way around despair, is through.

About the Artist
Nothing Inside is an Atlanta-based electronic band with a diverse and unique sound. With songs ranging from straightforward synthpop, to hard-edged grinding roll-around-on-the-floor-and-bleed songs, to more ethereal compositions, you're never quite sure what the next song will bring. Refusing to be sterotyped into any of the many existing subcatagories of electronic music, they've been redefining the genre since 1996. Since then, they've released four more-than-full-length (70+ minute) CDs... read more

5 out of 5 stars Yes, this is a Thrash Metal Classic.......2006-02-11

When the Years of Decay was first released, I approached it with caution, since I wasn't happy with "Under the Influence" "Under the Influence" Seemed like a far cry from "Feel the Fire", "Taking Over", and the EP "F**K You". I had no idea that "The Years of Decay" would not only completly wipe out "Under the Influence" it became their best out of the bunch (Horroscope didn't exist yet, so I am just comparing it to the first 4 albums) SO here were are 14yrs later since its release, and it deserves to be called a classic. Even though its not quite as good as it was 14yrs ago, I still think it is a really solid album and defines the days of Thrash Metal. I believe every Nu Metal fan should have this in thier collection, as most of the younger artist today probely grew up listening to the likes of Overkill and great 80's Thrash. It is a Metal Masterpiece, and it existed in a time that the only place metal heads could get thier daily dose of Metal was LP's, CD's (if you have the 300Bucks for a player and the 25bucks a pop for the disc), and of course our cassetes. Not to mention the fact we only had Saturday Nights of MTV's Headbangers Ball, or some College Radio stations that spun Metal on weekends late night (anyone from Jersey Remember 89.5 WSOU, in Newark?????) SO I urge all Metal fans to add this to thier collection and own a piece of history!!

5 out of 5 stars Time to Thrash!!!.......2005-10-28

A stellar album, after the underrated "Under The Influence, killer production, Bobby's vocals really started to form on this one, but, I always liked his voice, definetly different and cool sounding, they started exploring epic/old MetallicaESQUE songs here, great variety on this album, theres fast paced, mid-paced and a few slower-Sabbath-Like-Songs, lots of tempo changes as well, it blends well, heavy as hell, thrashes as well!, even funny at times!...sort of like Exodus, in the comical sense that is, the bands sound nothing alike, the first time I saw the video for "Elimination" when I was like 17, it had me thrashing about, I was already into old Metallica/Megadeth and stuff, and wanted to expand, my first Overkill was "Horrorscope" though, the one after this, but the song "Elimination" found on here was the song that got me into them, killer riffs, very heavy/fast, Bobby's very unique aggressive vocal style, it all fits, you may not like his voice at first, but give it time, Bobby is a really good vocalist, and definetly very different from the rest, kind of reminds you of Bon Scott and Bruce Dickinson in a way.

Time to Kill 5/6, A VERY NICE OPENER, changes around, fast..then midpaced..then slow and sludgy, very nice

Elimination 5/6, Here it is, a very killer song, ONE of the best on the album for sure, it's destructive, mostly fast paced here

I Hate 5/5, LOVE IT, this is what you play to your ex-girlfriend, "But most of all...I HATE YOU"-great lyrics!

Nothing to Die For 5/4, Not much to say, doesn't stand up to the first 3, but still a good song

Playing With Spiders/Skullkrusher 5/5, A very nice Sabbath-Like-Song, very sludgy, with heavy riffs, be warned though, it's VERY slow, could be a bit overlonged, but still killer

Birth of Tension 5/6, Killer song here, listen to that bass solo!

Who Tends The Fire 5/5, Another SabbathESQUE song, but a little faster in spots than Playing With Spiders, pretty much midpaced, slows down for the chorus

The Years of Decay 5/5, A ballad-like song, very nice though, adds variety, very melodic intro

E.vil N.ever D.ies 5/6, RIGHT UP THERE WITH THE FIRST 2, GREAT WAY TO CLOSE OFF A GREAT ALBUM, it's thrashy, heavy, and quite great, DO NOT SKIP THIS!!!

A great album overall, not a bit overrated either, it stands up to the hype it got...which wasn't TOO much, deserved more actually, as far as I'm concerned, Overkill should have been part of "The Big Four" instead of Anthrax...but you could also say Exodus, and Testament belonged in there as well...oh well, not going to get into that, all bands are great, and so was Overkill, they should have gotten A LITTLE more known, but no, due to Anthrax (BAH, one good album...), but I guess, seeing that Overkill wasn't part of the Bay Area, that could be why, but if you like old school Thrash, which if you do, you should already have this album, but if you don't, get it also check out "Taking Over" "Under The Influence" and "Horrorscope" if you ended up liking this, LATER!!

5 out of 5 stars QUITE POSSIBLY THE BEST THRASH ALBUM EVER!.......2005-10-26

All i have to say is WOW!!!!! Anyone who does not own this album has got to buy it, and its so cheap everywhere you find it! Overkill are the kings of crunch riff thrash metal, this album has so many stomp riffs in it you have to watch your neck because OVERKILL WILL WRECK YOUR NECK!!! ENJOY!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2005-09-04

Overkill always has awesome lyrics.Trust me, if you like metal(speed metal) you will like this album.
Time To Kill(awesome song),Elimination is my favorite song on the album,it just rules, here is the lyrics to the second chorus,
Eliminate the right
Eliminate the wrong
Eliminate the weak
Eliminate the strong
Eliminate your feelings
Eliminate too late
Eliminate the hope
Eliminate,Eliminate.
I Hate, unbelievalbe song, here are the lyrics to the chorus,
I hate people that make ya feel small
I hate havin' my back against the wall
I hate bein' talked down to
I hate your rules
I hate 'em all
Hate bein' marked to take the fall
Planet's not big enough for me and you. (Awesome lyrics).
Every song is amazing, BUY THIS ALBUM!

5 out of 5 stars The Better of the two.......2006-06-03

I have both disc in the series. I liked the music on this disc much more than the first. The selections seem more focused and the sounds are much clearer. Also, the particular pieces fit better together. I love the sound of this group and hope they make more in the future.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as version 1 in this series.......2004-09-03

This is by the same group who did the wonderful & engaging Early American Choral Music 1. Somehow this CD did not live up to its predecessor in some ways. The performance is still top notch, but somehow the CD as a whole isn't quite as engaging to listen to as the first. Perhaps version 2's strength is also its weakness. Its diversity of composers allows you to pear past the shadow of William Billings and sample other notable early American hymn writers. That exposure is valuable & appreciated. I just couldn't get into it as much.

A final note: many of the texts are beautiful (and available from the publisher's web site). However, I would criticize "Who is this that cometh from Edom?" as dwelling just a bit too much on the Jews' rejection of Jesus. Among other reasons & issues, Christianity says that we are all sinners & there is no cause to single a particular group out negatively.

4 out of 5 stars Same as 'Goostly Psalmes: Anglo-American Psalmody 1550-1800'.......2004-02-21

Please note this CD is a duplicate of His Majestie's Clerkes's "Goostly Psalmes: Anglo-American Psalmody 1550-1800" -- identical contents but a different name and cover. I ordered both and was irritated to discover this. This CD is cheaper, so I recommend this one. It is a lovely choral work from a little-known period of sacred music.

James Ford and James Shaw started playing Electronic music together before Simian formed and began DJing clubs during in between Simian's touring commitments, eventually combining these two loves and creating their own project. 4 out of 5 stars CAN'T STOP THE BEAT! but you can probably save..........2007-07-12

Well i really do love this album from SMD, it is overpriced for the trouble of buying the album. Though that's how it goes for most imported goods. But get past that and you have one of the most influencial beat albums of the year! I love this album very much, a nice cool dance beat sound with a heavy hit on some tracks. Though check out the vids for IT'S THE BEAT, and HUSTLER! THose are key tracks for most of the album, but a very good one at that. thIS IS curRently THE best album to come from the UK to date. PLus don't fret they have a US ep coming out, and maybe the album will port stateside soon so don't leave this just yet... YOU GET IT? YOU GOT IT? YOU KNOW YOU SHOULD GET THIS!!!

-quoted from song IT'S THE BEAT "except last word on YOU KNOW YOU SHOULD..."

3 out of 5 stars Waaaaaaay Overpriced!!! :(.......2007-06-26

Me being a huge fan of "Hustler" by SMD was totally excited to see they were putting out a full album. Needless to say, I was a little let down. My main gripe is the length of the CD. The main album clocks in at only 36:57, with the longest track at just 4:59, & the majority are only around 3 1/2 minutes long. What makes it worse is this supposed bonus disc is again just under 40 minutes. This one only has 6 tracks with remix's & a couple full versions. Why weren't these both just put on one disc? My other issue is on the 1st CD there are only 10 tracks to begin with 3 of those 10 are complete throw away filler tracks the worst offender of these would be the last track "Scott". Ya know, if you're gonna make an album close to 80 minutes & you need to throw something in to fill some empty space, fine, but when your CD is only 20 minutes long to begin with, can we do with out the filler stuff? I don't know, I like alot of the music on the album, it's just probably not gonna get alot of repeat play out of me because it's so short:(. I don't wanna keep hitting play every 30 minutes, or have to stop & put something else in. SMD would've been better off releasing a extended CD single with the 6 great tracks on the CD. I hate to say if I had to do it again, I would skip this release & just DL the good tracks, this was not money well spent:(. If you can find it cheap check it out, otherwise I would suggest passing on this release.

Simian Mobile Disco have made a hit with album. listening to the tracks on this album is an enjoyable experience. Seeing this all live or hearing it in a dance club is even better.

This album is well done and has plenty of delightful dance tracks that many people can enjoy if they are fans of the sounds of Electroclash, Nu-Rave, Minimalist Techno,Synth Dominated, and even glitch heavy over driven wet bass heavy techno. This album has the potential to still be around for a decade (at least I hope to be right in that hope).

Norwegian group combines the intensity of metal, the majesty of melodic rock, and the story telling of progressive rock into one mind-blowing experience.

4 out of 5 stars Masterful Norwegian Metal.......2007-02-12

"Waves Of Visual Decay" is the sophomore effort from Norwegian progressive metal outfit Communic, and is one of the better recent efforts in the genre. A good way to describe this band's sound would be a cross between power and progressive metal, with an intellectual slant and lengthy, prog-influenced compositions. Communic remind me quite a bit of the band Nevermore, perhaps with a bit lower shred quotient.

A very addictive blend of elements which any metal fan would certainly enjoy; this album is definately a standout among the metal releases of the last few months. Complex and heavy riffs and excellent operatic vocals, an epic, cinematic sensibility, and intelligent lyrics full of pointed social commentary. I have been a fan of progressive metal for years, and Communic are certainly rising stars in the genre.

Some fine-tuning might help this band, however...some songs are a bit long without enough variety to warrant the song's length, and feel rather repetitive because of this. That having been said, when this band is "on", they're on fire...tracks like the blazing opener "Under A Luminous Sky" and "At Dewy Prime" are powerful, intense, and heavy. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars It is metal album of the year.......2007-01-07

It is by far the best metal album of the year. I took a chance on it and boy did I hit the jackpot. I think it blows Nevermore away. Their a decent band but nothing like this. Not a bad song on the disc. My favorite is Frozen Asleep In The Park and At Dewy Prime not far behind. There are two bonus cuts that were re-recorded from their first disc that are thrown in that are excellent. A must have for people into metal music.

5 out of 5 stars man oh man.......2006-12-26

Wanted to give a quick review of how awesome this album is. It's awesome. I would call it progressive death with a lot of power metal. You can disagree but you must check this band out. Nevermore sound? Yes and beyond. Better song structure on the whole album and guitar that will make your ears bleed and make your heart be glad. This band and Into Eternity are pushing the boundaries of prog and metal and redefining heavy music. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning...My Ears are Thankful for Such Brilliance.......2006-12-21

Norway's Communic have taken the metal world by storm in a relatively short time. In 2005, the band released their debut album Conspiracy in Mind. After the recording, the band hastily entered the studio and recorded Waves of Visual Decay. This release is nothing short of stunning, and is a very strong contender for Album of the Year.

Waves of Visual Decay starts off with a fast paced progressive monster with Under a Luminous Sky. This song is a strong opener and is filled with tempo changes and amazing vocals. Frozen Asleep in the Park is a great song with wonderful layering of the guitar work. One of the best songs is the title track. Oddleif Stensland's vocals are top-notch and this shows his magnificent range. The final track, At Dewy Prime is epic and in my opinion, the best song on the album. The guitar work is spectacular and the song is nearly 10 minutes long.

Oddleif Stensland's vocals soar high once again and have that hint of Nevermore's Warrell Dane present. This band is so talented that it is downright scary at how good the next albums will be. People often call Communic the Norwegian Nevermore. This is accurate, and Nevermore fans should embrace this band for their mastery of the genre. Waves of Visual Decay is rightfully one of the top releases of 2006. I can hardly wait until Communic tour the United States.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-07-19

"Instinct: Decay" was one of the best releases of 2006. Sonically punishing, completely unique. Every minute of this album (I've got it on vinyl) is amazing. Lo-fi, primordial Darkthrone-style black metal glazed in psilocybin and cured with weed smoke.

For fans of everything from Pink Floyd to Leviathan and more.

5 out of 5 stars Of the Best Black Metal.......2007-02-02

Nachtmystium did wonderfully in breaking outside the typical black metal sound. This album is an exceptional journey. It slows down and speeds up, has guitar solos! remains heavy as hell, but makes me admire them a lot for not remaining confined in a box, rather integrating different techniques...

    3 out of 5 stars Impressive.......2006-09-15

Lo-fi DARKTHRONE worship is the order of the day here for this one-man black metal project (from the US), but it's occasionally woven through with melodic leads and solos, a la TIAMAT or PINK FLOYD, and even a touch of AGALLOCH acoustics here and there. Next time though, less dark ambient soundscapes, especially since they're all more or less interchangeable.

    4 out of 5 stars Sonorous USBM.......2006-06-10

This is one of the best USBM albums I've heard in some time. It's very spacey, and heavily distorted, yet recalls a bit of the magic of classics like Pure Holocaust and In The Nightside Eclipse. Nachtmystium's bittersweet melodies twist like barbed wire into a black metal kalleidoscope of emotions. While melody is typically maintained by fast arpeggios, structural intricacies writhe beneath simple tonal patterns, reflecting a frustrated artist searching his soul to create something great. What this band creates is space. No sound travels its full destination without being met with an ambient shrill or reverberation, creating almost a virtual landscape that shudders like a cold introvert between Burzum-esque minimalism and grinding sludge, peppered with sobbing, distorted psyche-rock guitars. Nachtmystium lifts an atmosphere with simple musical techniques, and allows it to soar exhuberantly over black metal conventions, while kicking up foul life below to breathe in for a "sound." The vocalist is sufficiently passionate, although unassuming. I think I heard him hit a neat falsetto once, but his scream is so muddled in the production it doesn't matter much.

Nachtmystium casts aside phrases like "simplicity" and "progression" to define their music, and play with assertive individuality. They really only lack a concrete sense of theme. Lots of wandering dissonant phrases that segue between cosmic, strategic black metal, and riffs that could easily be NWOBHM. But, what could otherwise be seen as a cheesy collage of influences is actually strung together in irreputable coherance before being drowned out in seething, droning distortion. Nachmystium departs before introducing itself, leaving a very subliminal impression.

3 out of 5 stars Speed of Pain, best re-working of a song.........2004-08-19

The band doing the stripped down lamentful accoustic version of "Speed of Pain" is Ophelia Rising (female vocals) and Abominable (male vocals) if you haven't checked them out you're missing a whole lot, they're a great and often overlooked band. I happen to think that this is the greatest re-working of a Manson song since Apoptygma Bizerk covered "Coma White." (Yeah it was ravey and seriously out-of-character for the song but that's the whole point of tribute/remix albums) The fem vocals on S.o.P. sound very close to Inkyubus Sukkubus (another group worth checking out) I didn't really like the other songs on this album so much as I did Ophelia's.

I listen to the song and think of loved one's and friends who've hurt me.

"And I wish I could sleep, but there's a knife in my back for every day that I've known you."

3 out of 5 stars Bile, A.Headcharge, Needulhed, Razorblade Smile get 5 stars.......2004-05-08

The album was Great as far as tracks by A.Headcharge, Bile, NeedulHed, and RazorBlade Smile go. ALex Xenophon, and Broke Box had horrible vocals on the album. Bile covered Tourniquet and in my opinion did the best cover on the album. Any true Manson fan should purchase this album regardless.

5 out of 5 stars Aphelia Rising=Davey Havok? "Speed of Pain" is good!!.......2004-04-01

I've only heard a few of the songs on this, but the one I oddly like alot is the cover of "Speed of Pain." The female kind of makes the song lose its touch. But, it's really good. Imagine the song, now imagine Manson singing it with a female. Now, imagine Manson no longer singing. Now...get this, imagine Davey Havok singing this song. Yes, this sounds like it's Davey Havok of AFI (I bet alot of AFI fans who hear this song, will agree with this) at times, and or most of the time, with a female singing in the background. I like it alot, but the female makes it only good and not great. Davey Havok singing a Manson song...just hearing this one song makes me think AFI should cover this Manson song.
Another good one is the "Man that You Fear" tribute. It sounds like it's going HEAVY METAL with the vocals, but the instrumentals are done quite well. I also enjoy the "Man that You Fear" tribute on the industrial tribute to Manson, alot. I might even like the industrial one a bit more, it just sounds more like the actual songs.

Well all in all these are all good songs, but those 2 are the best. Get this just to hear a "pseudo Davey Havok" rendition of "Speed of Pain" it's well worth it!

    4 out of 5 stars Worth it.......2004-01-10

I wasn't sure what to expect with this album - the reviews are kind of all over the place, but I really like Manson so I picked it up.

The best song hand's down is Nocturne's Get Your Gunn. I'll be sure to check out other Nocturne albums having heard this. The worst song on the album are the Alex Xenophon's songs. I don't want to hear someone in a barely audible whisper butcher two great Manson songs. There's so much possibility for those two songs I just don't get what he was trying to do. Well, I guess I get it, I just think it was a mistake.

Rock is Dead, Speed of Pain and Dried Up are the probably the next best songs with pretty decent takes.

Overall I think the album is worth getting, if nothing else just to get exposed to some pretty decent bands. With so much crap out there, it's nice to see bands like Nocturne and Luxt doing good music.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the money.......2001-10-22

If you're not big on tributes, don't buy this album. I AM big on tributes, I own 42 Marilyn Manson CDs, and THIS album is better than most tributes, which ought to tell you something right off the bat. The following songs are either very good or very close to the originals: Tourniquet, Rock is Dead, The Reflecting God, The Speed of Pain, Antichrist Superstar. The other songs are decent -- not horrible at all --, but just didn't make that much of an impression on me. Ok, wait. I lied ... The cover of "The Beautiful People" is dull, quiet, slow, and ummm, HORRIBLE. What was Alex Xenophon thinking?!!!! He destroyed a great song. Absolutely destroyed it.

    3 out of 5 stars Torn.......2000-08-09

I feel torn between my fondness for Turnage's music and the partial disappointment that this piece of music represents to me. Several movements of this piece are extremely exciting and a joy to experience. Others--the ones that feature a large proportion of improvised material--make for nice listening once or thrice, but lose their appeal quickly. One of Turnage's strong points as a composer is his marvelous talent for development. When, as in this piece, he leaves that development up to others, it leaves me wanting. As always, Turnage's orchestration is beautifully colorful and distinctive, and the movements run the gamut from placid to raucous. This was certainly a worthwhile experiment on his part, but I think that, when he places such a dependence for musical contributions on other artists, Turnage sells his potential short. I do suggest that you check out this recording, but I cannot give it my best review. I can only wait for more recordings by this wonderful composer.

5 out of 5 stars An Exciting turn for Turnage.......2000-07-24

If you are a captive of categories, you will not find this music to your liking. Turnage takes his subject for this work (the life and death of his chemically-addicted brother, Andrew) seriously. And in order to recreate the world his brother inhabited, he draws for inspiration on sources outside art music -- especially the more adventurous reaches of jazz. The result is tough stuff, indeed. For anybody familiar with his work, this should come as no surprise, however. Turnage is the sort of contemporary composer for whom the euphemism "uncompromising" was invented. My opinion, as one who cherishes music that dares to flirt with disaster, is that the extraordinary rhythmic vitality alone of Blood on the Floor is worth the price of admission.

It's certain that, even more than most, this music is only as good as the performance of it, since improvisation by the soloists -- all world class jazz musicians on the CD -- is crucial to its effect. This performance truly is wonderful. Guitarist John Scofield is quoted in the CD booklet as speculating that "this really is the music of the future." The opinion is perhaps a trifle grandiose, but it seems likely that "trans-genre" composition by top-notch young composers like Turnage will become more common rather than less as the sort of summing-up and transfiguring that occurred in the arts at the beginning of the 20th Century occurs again in a significant way at this, the beginning of the 21st Century.

At the very least, Blood on the Floor is a welcome addition to trans-genre composition, in the excellent company of Stravinsky's Ebony Concerto and Milhaud's La Creation du Monde, to name only two of the the century's award winners in this challenging category.

2 out of 5 stars Another Failed Fusion Attempt.......2000-06-17

I was at the 2000 Ojai Festival where the performance of this piece was awaited with high anticipation. Turnage was there, and gave a talk before the concert. Sir Simon Rattle conducted it. Reaction seemed to fall into two groups. Some felt it was bracing and refreshing to see jazz and blues melted together with a symphony orchestra, but they tended to effuse more about the sax, guitar and drums than they did about the piece as a whole. The professionals in the audience were decidedly less enthusiastic, and regarded the melting pot as producing an ugly sticky mess. One composer told me he thought Blood on the Floor was over-long (72 minutes) and self-indulgent. My feeling was that the piece was sprawling, undisciplined and unstructured, and lacked a common thread of organization, which makes a piece of serious music. Blood on the Floor is really Nine Studies for Blues Band and Orchestra, which have their moments and can be digested one at a time, if you are in the mood. But, as a new direction for 21st Century classical music, it is no more successful than the L.A. Philharmonic Zappa concerts of the '70s. It is an irritating curiosity. (Thomas Ades' "Asyla" was also performed at Ojai, and was received much better, as it is a much better piece!).

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding 90's composition for ensemble and jazz soloists.......2000-03-13

Attempts to fuse "classical" music with more modern forms, especially when they include electric guitar, can often prove disastrous. Not so with Mark-Anthony Turnage. "Blood On The Floor" uses a large ensemble with jazz soloists on saxaphone, drumkit and electric guitar, plus solo turns for flute, trombone and two trumpets. The theme of illegal drugs (which tragically killed the composer's brother) is not all-important, but the music is certainly harrowing. Jazzy and bluesy, even rocking in places, and including celesta and, at one point, plucked piano strings, "Blood On The Floor" nevertheless completely avoids gimmicks. Not one for the cheerful summer evenings, but certainly one for people who want emotion from their music or who want to hear what the cutting edge of modern composition sounds like.

3 out of 5 stars Jazz influence on cutting-edge modern classical music.......2000-03-09

Turnage is definitely one of the greatest living classical composers. In Blood on the Floor, he merges his dark and moody orchestral work with three Jazz soloists, including the legendary John Scofield. The result is definitely not easy listening; rather a disturbing and spooky vision of the dark side of urban life.

This is not a piece for the faint-hearted, but sets a high standard for classical music going into the 21st century.

Please note this CD is identical to another His Majestie's Clerkes CD, "Early American Choral Music, Vol. 2 (Anglo-American Psalmody: 1550-1800)" but with a different cover and name! I bought both and was irritated to discover this. The other version is cheaper, so I would suggest getting that one.

This is great choral singing, and if you missed it in this incarnation, all is not lost. It has been reissued by Harmonia Mundi's budget label, Classical Express as "Early American Choral Music vol 2 Anglo-American Psalmody 1550-1800". Texts of the songs aren't in the booklet but can be downloaded from the label's website.
