1039 / Smoothed Out Slappy Hours

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
This compilation of early indie work (1989's 1000 Hours EP, 1990's Slappy EP, and 1990's 39/Smooth LP) was a strong indicator of things to come for Green Day. Recorded on shoestring budgets, these recordings out-rocked most of the wannabe punk records that flooded record stores at the time. From the first strains of the opener, "At the Library," Green Day are off on a fast, fun ride. Some of the band's best tracks are from these early sessions--"Don't Leave Me," "Dry Ice," "16," "Rest," and "Paper Lanterns," to name only a few. It's a hook-filled record with three-chord wonders at every turn, anchored by Armstrong's snotty-boy vocals. He captures youthful yearning, variously spitting lyrics like "I feel forgotten / Feel like rotting" and then musing out loud, "What is it about you that I adore?" Simply some of the catchiest punk rock ever made. --Lorry Fleming --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5 out of 5 stars Before Dookie...........2007-01-05

Some people might like Green Day for American Idiot, but why people never try something different, it's pretty sad. Before Dookie, American Idiot, the clothes, the make-up, and the dozens of teenyboppers that overflooded their fanbase, they were just 19 year old dropouts. Nicknamed "2 Dollar Bill" by his peers, Billie Joe sang every song sincere, soulful, and emotional, the traits of teen angst. Good Charlotte wish they could be like them (GC sucks).

Don't expect this to sound like they are now. The production is raw (overused word, sure), and Billie Joe's voice is very high-picthed, but actually isn't annoying. Like Squash N' Squeak mentioned, there are actually solos on this album. REAL, authentic solos. Bille Joe won't go down as a guitar legend, but the solos are fast, catchy, and most of all, useful. If you can play a guitar like that, that's all you need to know. The real music fans know that the long to make great music with the guitar is to make it sing, be part of your emotions. If it's technical and like that (Eddie Van Halen comes to mind), good, but the brave people are the only ones who will release the meaning of the guitar behind it's electric interior, and releazize that in fact indeed, you are the gear of emotion that drives the machine.

Since they were 19, Green Day' song writing wasn't about the thigns they were before, but it was him and his voice about his struggles in life. Classic love songs, angst, and just plain fun are packed onto the disc in music form. At The Library is all about falling in love with a girl you don't know, unrequited love, the feeling you get when you first see somebody, you want to talk to her, but you don't know what to do. That old feeling. Dry Ice is a song Billie Joe wrote for some girl he liked, don't know who it is. All kinds of songs he wrote about love, but thankfully it's not the usual emo crap like the cliched self loathing and "how could she do this to me". Billie Joe is rather positive, at the end of At The Library, he ensures himself that he will meet the girl again someday, despite she has a boyfriend. Paper Laterns is all about how Billie Joe wants to forget about his ex, and wants to get on with his life. It's rather positive, and unless your a total steortypical tough guy who thinks anything love is sappy, you won't mind them. And by the way, love is not cliched either, as love has so much instincts and theorys and terms, that it is a complex way of life.

Yeah so, other than that, this is classic Green Day. It's not as good as Dookie, American Idiot (teenyboppers, go somewhere else), and Nimrod, but it's good. Everything in the Green Day discography has not dissapointed me, so if you are openminded, check out all there albums. There are so many hidden gems around the numerous (but rarely, great, even though they are played alot) hits, that the teenboppers will never know.

5 out of 5 stars The debut of one of the few great modern bands........2006-12-25

This was Green Day's debut, way back in, I believe, 1991. 1,039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours was actually a big compilation of 2 EPs they did back in '89 and '90 (good luck finding them). The production is quite good, despite that they only had $1,000 to produce the record. This was also long before they had Tre as a drummer. They had Al Sobrante, who'd be replaced with Tre after Al left the band to pursue college (I'm sure after he found out how successful Green Day became, he hung himself). Sure, Billie Joe's lyrics may seem a bit amature, and not quite up to par with later lyrics, but it's still cool to see what the guys were like back in the day.

1,039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours ranges from topics like girls Billie Joe met in the library (At The Library), when he put a substance in his teacher's cofee (409 In Your Coffee Maker), and his hatred of his mom's boyfriend after his father passed away (Why Do You Want Him?). And this may surprise you, but Billie Joe actually does GUITAR SOLOS on this album! (I think he does that on Kerplunk as well, but I can't say for sure since I haven't listened to it in w while). Yes my friends, the solos on this album prove that Billie isn't the talentless 3-chord belter everyone though he was, and he still plays these songs live, so it proves his talent isn't lost. There's also a great cover of Operation Ivy's Knowledge here (which also has a solo), which has become a staple in Green Day's live set (that's where Billie picks a guitarist, a bassist, and a drummer right from the audience). Mike's bass will, as always, blow your mind with his excellent, muscular basslines (he really is good, and being a bassist myself, I know what I'm talking about), and it's also really impressive considering his age back then (18). Even though I think Tre would surpass Al's drum skills, he's still very good as he pounds away through songs like At The Library, Paper Lanterns, and Knowledge. So all 'n all, I'd say this is a very impressive debut, and would be a sing of even more impressive things to come.

By the way, if you haven't seen Green Day live, you really need to catch them when they come to your town. I saw them on the American Idiot tour last year in American West Arena, it was the first time I've seen them live, and after seeing Aerosmith and the Rolling Stones live, I still think it was the best concert I've ever been to. There's so much audience participation, interludes in songs, and Billie Joe jumping all over the T-shaped stage. But I'm getting off track, so back to the album.

Buy 1,039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours if you're a Green Day fan, otherwise you haven't they right to call yourself a fan of the band. Fortunately, after years of being hard to find, this and Kerplunk have been remastered and re-released on Green Day's post Kerplunk label Reprise Records (who sign GD way back in '93), so this and the aforementioned album should be easier to find. And I think that even today - yes, today - they still rock.

4 out of 5 stars Green Day's first...and maybe finest........2006-08-18

Don't hate me, but I was introduced to Green Day by American Idiot, which was the first CD I had which was really mine. I enjoyed it a lot, and soon I was an obsessive FREAK over the band. I'm still missing "Kerplunk", but other than that my Green Day collection is just about complete. Ok, now that I'm done telling you my life story, here's some info on the album:

At The Library-Great song, with a really catchy intro and outro. Definitely up there. Drags a little in the middle, though. 4/5

Disappearing Boy-One of my favorite songs! Basically about feeling lonely and invisible as a kid. 5/5!

Green Day-This song has always been special to me, because it has the deep, momentous message of...DRUGS!!! YAAY!!! Fortunately, it's so incoherent to the untrained ear that you can probably get away with blasting it while your parents are around. Just don't get carried away and start singing along. 4/5

Going to Pasalacqua-At first I found this song a little boring, but then it got stuck in my head and I realized I liked it! 4/5

The Judge's Daughter-Ok, Green Day haters...LOOK AT THAT UNFATHOMABLY AWESOME GUITAR SOLO, AND TELL ME THESE PEOPLE HAVE NO TALENT!!!!! TELL ME!!!!!! AAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!! (I'm ok now.)5/5

Paper Lanterns-(insert judge's daughter review here) Yeah...that about covers it. 5/5

409 In Your Coffeemaker-Ok...thanks to the incident in which he put 409 in his teacher's coffee, combined with the fact that he is a member of my favorite band, not to mention he's got an awesome voice, Billie Joe Armstrong can do no wrong in my eyes!!! Kidding, kidding...
4/5

And yeah...that about covers my favorite tracks on this CD. Hope my review was helpful, and remember: apples go "crunch", not "juice"!

5 out of 5 stars Uncut Punk.......2006-07-11

I cannot say much more about this album that hasn't been said, but I will attempt to write all that hasn't been said. After the release of American Idiot, I noticed a cover of some magazine that stated that Green Day could now be acknowledged as one of the greatest bands ever... I had my doubts about that. Sure American Idiot was a decent album, but it was not the best album of even the last 5 years. I set out to explore the rest of their catalogue however. Their music shifted from ear-pleasing but still boring pop-punk (Dookie, Insomniac), consistent but borrowed material (Warning), and complete disaster in an attempt to try something new (Nimrod). I wasn't wholly impressed with the band. This was the last album I heard. And I was completely blown away. It was a re-revolution: Green Day had created that unclean, perfect punk sound that the Ramones had created in 1976. The Ramones sound is more prominent on here than other albums, which is definitely a great thing for the band as any one who listens to this album would say. I wish they carried on with this sound a little longer, but then again it would not be as wonderful in retrospect. Brilliant, from their epononymous song to "Rest" and all the other great tunes. One of the greatest punk albums ever.

5 out of 5 stars Nuff ____.......2006-06-12

Let's clear something up. REAL Green Day fans are not posers, losers, mosers, or whatever ____ you like to label us with. The only bad Green Day fans are the ________ who started to like them when American IDiot came out. THat's just fine, but those people do no deserve to listen to Green Day. Nice job for destroying Green Day's reputation you _______. THese are the same people who listen to KoRn and other ____ like Slipknot. And no ____, I am not making fun of the poeople wheo like American Idiot, as long as you are a true fan, not unlike some people. ANd one other thing, Green Day wasn't bashed alot until they released AMerican Idiot, so if it weren't for the MTV ___________, liking Green Day wasn't a crime (but it should never ___________ be a _______ crime you ___________).

I decided to review this because this is their overlooked album, and too many people listen to Dookie and American Idiot and think they are a good fan. This stuff rocks, and I think that this one if my favorite Green Day albums. I don't like AMerican IDiot, but at least I still have not lost respect for Green Day, it's the stupid MTV whores that runined their reputation. Buy this, but remeber that they wre youong when they recorded this (Tre wasn't even in ther band), but it has the most energy of all the other Green Day cd. It's not the youngest band every (Gang Green was only 15 years old when they made their first music.......and didn't sound like _____ either), but who gives a ____? It's good, that's what matters.

God I hate writing five star review albums (sure, you dip_____s have more to critize when somebody rants, but it's fun, no thanks to those damn amazon censors).
