Song of the Siren (remastered)
Editorial Reviews
The Billboard Guide to Progressive Music, 1997
"A surprisingly mature self-released disc by the promising composer/vocalist/instrumentalist Young...quirky, surreal...of a very high standard."
Harmonie Magazine, Rock Progressif (France)
"...a formidable list of diverse instruments in her repertoire...This album strikes the summit of beauty...A true little masterpiece!"
Album Description
This album is the re-mastered version of the original 1996 debut release by Michelle Young. It contains new artwork, and the bonus track has been omitted. Full of lush vocals and melodic, introspective songs, 'SOS' helped establish Young as one of today's leading female voices in the world of progressive music.

Album Description
Rise Against are a political punk band from Chicago who recorded Siren Song of the Counter-Culture with Rage Against the Machine producer GGGarth and Rage and Nirvana mixer Andy Wallace. The four band members came together from punk bands 88 Fingers Louie, Pinhead Circus, and the Enemy, and the emo band Baxter, and play old school punk (e.g., Descendants) with a strong political point of view.
Siren Song of the Counter-Culture has drawn rave reviews from key publications. Rolling Stone praised the band's "rousing, intelligent fury," while Alternative Press said "the band's engrossing hardcore is an urgent siren song that's appropriate for these angst-ridden, uncertain times."

i really enjoy this cd. its been a while since i bought a new punk cd. it enjoys some of melody elements of afi. it has less of the recent clean punk sound that can be heard on mtv. this still has some good aggressive singing with good points calm....
enjoy.
Hit Machines.......2007-06-08
Rise Against is such a versatile band. This CD alone has 3 hit songs on it, each being completely different from the next.
SIREN SONG OF THE COUNTER CULTURE - CD ALBUM.......2007-05-13
LATELY I BOUGHT THIS ALBUM OF RISE AGAINST. THE SERVICE OF AMAZON WAS AMAZING AND VERY QUICK, EVEN SAFE IN HANDLING THE CD. THE ALBUM IS JUST FABULOUS! I HEARD IT MILLIONS OF TIMES, BUT THE SONGS ARE FANTASTIC EVERY TIME I HEAR THEM! GOOD JOB!
Very good album.......2007-05-10
This is a really good CD to get if you are into the whole pop-emo thing. I wouldn't label this as punk (like Sex Pistols or Misfits) because it's more melodic. It's more along the lines of New Found Glory or maybe Pennywise or Bad Religion. It's probably realitively easy to find an mp3 for "Life Less Frightening", which is in my opinion the best song off the CD. If you like the aforementioned bands, then definitely get this, as you won't be disappointed.
Pretty good.......2007-01-10
this cd is pretty good, some really good songs from them thats for sure. if you like hard music you'll enjoy. Swing away is a nice song from them, something new and freash

Congress's most musically talented member.......2006-10-29
I must admit. I was interested in hearing this recording out of curiosity, since John Hall was running for Congress in my district and I become a volunteer on his campaign. A while back, at a campaign event, I got him to autograph my copy of this.
Having said that, I actually find myself really liking the music on this, even though I lean much more in the direction of indie/alternative rock. I remember the two big Orleans hits from my high school days, songs I always found likeable, but the versions here, which are kind of "unplugged," are really great. John sounds really passionate in his delivery of them, and his supporting musicians, including the great Tony Levin, do a fine job in backing him. In fact, I can't seem to stop listening to this version of Still the One; it's my song of the month this month.
Other songs here are quite nice, as well. Good Enough has a great rhythmic line and some good lyrics. The reggaeish Give One Heart is also a really nice song and a nice message. Half Moon sounds to me like it could be a Steve Winwood tune, with some really good singing by Mr. Hall. Two Faced World has a really nice funk sound. And the song Power is great, showing a deep social consiousness, one which was responsible for the No Nukes movement. Overall, this is a really decent record by a really really good guy. (And I rejoice that he won the election, and even got to sing a bit at his victory rally on election night.)
Refreshing.......2005-02-15
Classic radio stations tend to play great songs to death: Mr. Tambourine Man and Turn, Turn ,Turn by the Byrds; Satisfaction by the Rolling Stones; Dance With Me and Still the One by John Hall and Orleans. "Recovered" highlights these two songs and others in new semi-unplugged versions written by John and his wife Johanna and one written with country artist Steve Wariner. Johanna wrote the liner notes telling the history of the songs origins beginning with Half Moon in 1969 which was recorded first by Janis Joplin in 1970 and in 1973 by Orleans.
John's guitar playing both acoustic and electric is full of emotion and with an intimacy that helped me to better appreciate the original versions. He is backed by Tony Levin-bass, Ralph McDonald-percussion, Peter O'Brien-drums, and the incomparable Robbie Dupree-harmonica.
Pop songs in the Nude!.......1998-07-12
With the release of this great new collection of "Recovered" gems, Songwriter/Activist/Sailor/Ski Bum John Hall shows that he belongs amongst the elite of today's finest songsmiths. Along with the lyric talents of longtime wife/partner in song, Johanna, Hall brings sweet harmony and sky high melody to an almost perfect union. If you are a fan of Hall's 70's pop-rock hitmaking group, "Orleans"..remember, "Still The One" & "Dance With Me" ? you will be able to re-visit those old standards with a new appreciation. If You are a fan Hall's early 80's material, you will be amazed at the power that eminates from behind these not-quite-unplugged versions. This album has been in my cd player for days now. In a perfect world, these versions would have been the original releases. Thank's John & Johanna for letting your message of enpowerment & light grace my ears in such a wonderful manner. Buy this cd now...you won't be let down for even a moment!

Vocal Genius.......2000-09-05
Not only does Jonell possess one of the most incredible voices on the planet, she also brings an intelligence and art to her music that I have never witnessed. I was fortunate enough to hear/see her perform recently in Dallas. Wow! I was weak all over. Awesome!
Absolutely Riveting!.......2000-05-22
I recently purchased the So Like Joy CD, and have been listening to it constantly. Every song is masterfully and powerfully performed by the artist Jonell Mosser. She is tremendously talented and this CD clearly showcases the range and depth of her skill. She sings movingly and from the heart. She is at once earthy and spontaneously soulful. I love each of the songs, but I am particulary drawn to the title track, Ordinary Splendour, and You know Who You Are. Jonell Mosser has a lot of class and quite a bit of soul. You are reminded of Phoebe Snow, Janis Joplin, and Tracy Chapman. What an exciting talent this woman has! You won't be sorry you purchased this CD, so do so immediately!
Charismatic and dynamic!.......2000-05-06
This album delivers an unparalledled performance from charismatic Nashville based Jonell Mosser. A compelling portfolio exhibiting Jonell's abilities in Country, Rock, R&B - and don't forget SOUL!
Her soaring, energetic and powerful voice, combined with dynamic guitar and drum beat - drive your hands together and bring you to your feet!
"Do you Love Me" reminds me of Joni Mitchell. Title cut - "So like Joy," is a wonderful piece that brought tears to my eyes. "Parasite' - will get beneath your skin," and "ordinary Splendor," a duality of reality.
If you enjoy Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin and richly textured songs that are sung right from the soul - you need to get this album.

You're in for a great ride!.......2005-11-17
Wow! This album was everything I wished for and more: great songs, each is very evocative. They draw you in and land you aboard John Hall's 39' sailboat. One can sail along sharing the adventures, ranging from the flat out-fun rocker "I Need A Break (From my Vacation)" to the pensive "Islamorada" with it's iconoclastic rhythms to the simply gorgeous "Another Sunset." There's raggae, samba, rock and bossanova- inspired tunes.
Couple the very good songwriting with John's unique vocals and impeccable
guitar playing, backed with a righteous rhythm section (fabulous percussion), and guest appearances on guitar by Steve Wariner and Melanie Hall, this is just one great album. I can't wait to see the band, "Gulf Stream Night" live!

Excellent CD!.......2007-02-07
The more I listen to this CD the more I want of it. I just can't get enough of Jonell! I've had the good fortune of hearing her live and its a fantastic show. For a studio project this CD captures some of the magic she demonstrates every time she sings. A+++++
Jonell thank you for this great CD.......2003-06-17
I got to know Jonell accidentally through Jim Wieder's CD big foot, her voice is simply amazing. I would suggest this CD to anyone. Jonell definitely deserves more credit as an artist.
The Rarest of Gems.............2003-03-20
I just had the great fortune of discovering Jonell Mosser in Nashville and this cd captures the heart and essence of her beautiful voice and soul! The song Peace Stories will cause you to play it over and over again. Such an amazing song from a true gift from God. The world does not know what it is missing!
This is the "Real Deal"!.......2001-12-31
Jonell Mosser has the voice that every great singer can only dream of. There's no honky tonk in heaven or Tennessee that has an angel who can sing like this girl! She has all the best qualities of artists like Aretha Franklin, Billie Holiday, Big Mama Thornton, Etta James, and Janis Joplin. Her music is the perfect blend of pop/singer-songwriter and blues all sung from the heart and a very soulful soul. "Enough Rope" and the earlier "So Like Joy" are quite simply two classic albums from this artist known in Nashville and around the music world as the "Real Deal"! Grab yourself a Jonell Mosser CD today and I promise you . . . . tomorrow will be a better day! -Peace-
Jonell will Amaze you.......2001-07-31
What can I say this little lady has a voice as soft as silk and as hard as nails all at the same time. She is what Janis Joplin was trying to be. I agree with the first reviewer that she should sing more blues stuff it really is where she shines, but the plain simple truth is this little lady is amazing. She can just flat sing. She put's as much feeling and emotion into her songs as anyone I have ever heard. This CD is a must for all Jonell fan's. If you have not had the opportunity to enjoy this lady, you will not be disapointed. Fabulous CD buy it now. Also if you want to hear more of the soulful side of Jonell the "About Townes" CD is a must have, not a bad song on it.

Awesome Album - Great Artwork!.......2000-05-05
John has expanded from his 'Orlean's' days! New music with his familiar guitar - this definately is the guy that wrote 'Dance with Me' and 'You're Still the One."
Emotionally textured music explores many types of relationships, some of interpersonal - 'Usurper,''Home' and 'Circle' and some more in his traditon of "Power." Hall isn't afraid to address political issues and doesn't walk away from tough ones - like the death of a Child.
(October Child is in memory of Kyle Leach and a portion of royalties are donated to Child Cancer Program.)
The depth of the lyrics and poetry of the music keep this album close at hand for me - both to read the lyrics and to listen to the music!
This CD is a must have.......1999-12-13
John Hall's emotional and poetic depth are exhibited in this great album. The lyrics, some written in cooperation with others, don't have the young and hopeful flavor of his Orleans tunes but still have a deep social focus, as well as a more poignant snapshot of the nature of relationships. His distinctive strat guitar shines out, and the supporting musicians, including Robbie Dupree, Rick Danko, John Sebastian, to name but a few, are world class. There's a wide spectrum of styles here: bluesy funk ("Only Got Today", "Can't Take it With You") sweet ballads ("Home", "Circle") and some sharp, somewhat cutting, pictures about pain in love ("I'll Do My Days", "Litany", "Moving Target"). There's a tribute to a child who had only a short time to share his love ("October Child"). Buy this CD, you'll play it over and over.
The gift of John Hall's "Love Doesn't Ask".......1999-12-05
"Love Doesn't Ask" has it all! Powerful, poetic lyrics, music that will echo in your mind, and John Hall's unbeatable guitar playing, with brilliant backup. John Hall's latest CD has "Quiet Place," provocative Christmas music; "Home," a sure hit for all age groups; "Calcutta," with haunting words and compelling rhythm. "Can't Take it with You," "Circle," "Only Got Today," and "Love Doesn't Ask" are all wise and beautiful. "Usurper," "Litany," "Moving Target," "Don't Go There," and "I'll Do My Days" are bittersweet blues. "October Child" is a love song of a different kind. What a rare and authentic expression of deep feelings in original music, lyrics, and artistry - John Hall's gift to all!

why did they have to break up?.......2006-01-17
This is one of my favorite CDs. If you like Art Garfunkel, but without the bombastic endings on most songs, or if you like Celtic music at all, you will probably love this. Grace Griffith has a beautiful alto voice, and she is accompanied by a harp as well as other instruments, such as guitar.
Some of these tracks include singing, and others are instrumental. The instrumental tune I like the best is "Silent Star," which is played by Grace on the pennywhistle. It is eerily beautiful. It is immediately followed by "Sea Fever," in which Grace sings about the love of the sea.
My favorite song is the last one, "The Mermaid's Tale," which describes a shipwreck from the point of view of the mermaid. Grace sings with a lush accompaniment, alternating with a verse sung by a man who represents the drowning sailor. The song ends with the sound of the sea. It is haunting!
An added benefit is that this CD treats all kinds of topics without getting too depressing, and although the accompaniment is lush, to my ears it is never overdone (and I hate Wagner). I highly recommend it.
An entrancing CD, full of poignant beauty........2004-05-30
It's a world of enchantment that Grace Griffith and Cathy Palmer, the duo that comprises the Irish music group Connemara, reveal to us in their CD, "Siren Song." Every cut on this CD is so lovely that it's hard to choose a favorite, though any number that features Griffith's pure, exquisite mezzo-soprano is a standout. "Siren Song" is a must-have for anyone with even the slightest interest in Celtic music.
A great CD that deserves to be better known.......1999-10-19
This CD is outstanding. A great treatment of "sea music". Connemara is truly a great group!
Gem. Classic. Spectacular........1998-11-27
Thanks to Connemara for bringing these beautiful songs to life in such a distinctive setting. Gem. Classic. Spectacular. Don't miss it.
An Enchanting Dream-like Audio Voyage of Celtic Sea Songs.......1998-09-16
Once again the team of Vocalist/Guitarist Grace Griffith and Fiddler/Arranger Cathy Palmer, who call their group "Connemara" has produced an awe inspiring recording with their latest (1995) recording "Siren Song." Grace and Cathy are once again joined by Zan Mcleod, and also Harpists Sue Richards, Julia Lane, Carol Thompson and Mary Fitzgerald. Other musicians of note here are box player Billy McComiskey and hammered dulcimer player Jody Marshall, and more. Together these fine musicians have produced a rare pearl (Pun intened!) of an album. At once it transports you to the foggy mists and seascapes of the Brittish Isles. You will vision Sea spray, and foam and feel the gentle rocking of the boat when your feet are not moving to the lively jigs and reels. There have been many Celtic based recordings made with the theme of "The Celtic Sea", but not many as effective and beautiful as this recording. The album opens with the gourgeous instumental "The Song of the Seals/The Song of the Water Kelpie", the first piece an ancient Scottish air and the second being one of the most beautiful examples of tradtional Manx folk music. All of the instrumentals on this album evoke a calming and healing "Sea Mood", and will transport you to another time and place, if you allow it. Other instrumentals to note are "Sea Moods/Rowing from Isla to Uist", which makes you feel as if you were on a fishing boat, Peter Jungs' "Far Away/Sea and Sky", and Harpist Sylvia Woods' "Dialogue with a Brook." Cathy Palmers' arrangements here hit the mark, and her shining moment comes at the end of the album with her piece "The Storm Tossed Sea." Grace Griffith's lush, mystic and simply outstanding vocals on the songs are the glue along with the great instumentals that make "Siren Song" the gem that it is. Vocal highlights include "Dublin Lady", "Sea Fever" with the beautiful instumental introduction "Silent Star", by Executive Producer Susan Maule, "Sailing/Ships are Sailing", "Ripples in the Rockpools/Kiss of the Fiddle", "Siren Song", co-written by Grace & Zan, and "The Mermaid's Tale/The Mermaid's Song" inspired by the Tannahill Weavers. To sum this album up--you quite simply cannot find a finer balance of songs and instruments about the sea anywhere. Each album by "Connemara" gets better and better, and one only hopes for something new from them soon, as previously mentioned in my review of "Beyond the Horizon", they are among the best of the fairly unknown Celtic groups in America today.--do not hesitate to pick up this album up if you are a lover of Celtic, World, New Age or just heartfelt music-this certainly fits that billing.

Customer Reviews:
A wonderful surprise.......1999-09-10
If you mainly associate Kenny Wheeler with quiet, reflective chamber jazz (such as his wonderful Angel Song album on ECM), you're in for a big surprise with this album. Kenny and frequent collaborators Norma Winstone and John Taylor produce some wild'n'crazy music with a superb university band that swings really, really hard (and plays in tune for good measure). The "Siren" bit appears to be a reference to the way he uses wordless (mostly) female vocals as additional instruments in the band, frequently with breath-taking effect. You might even be reminded of Claude Debussy's use of female voices in his third nocturne for orchestra, subtitled something like "Sirenes". This is a recording I think will remain one of my favorites for a long time, possibly even a candidate for a desert island list.
