I love you Johnette... (long time fan).

5 out of 5 stars This CD is awesome.......2007-06-15

I have been a huge fan of all of Johnette's work for years. This album is defiantly not a disappointment. I would really would suggest this to anyone who likes music. It's very unique sounding but in the best way possible!

5 out of 5 stars Raw and open, surprising!!.......2007-06-10

Been a fan of the band Concrete Blonde and I've always checked out
their music over the years. I found this on Amazon and went to her website
to listen to the complete tracks and I've been really surprised at just
how amazing this collection is. The sound, vocals, writing all have
an edge you don't hear anymore so it stands out. Its different than
the Concrete Blonde days but you can't deny its got some great melodies
and off the wall vocal treaments and wide open raw lyrics. It rocks hard
in places and the acoustic guitar weaves its way around some great grooves. This is one of the best offerings this year so far and it would
be nice to see Johnette and these songs out on the road. so many favorites
but I do love the songs "My Diane", and the Coldplay cover "The Scientist",
"Amazing", the first single, & "Crazy Tonight", "Everthing for everyone".

5 out of 5 stars Scarred.......2007-06-07

An insanely amazing album. "Crazy Tonight" and "Everything For Everyone" are knockouts! Not that the other songs pale in comparison. It is one of the most satisfying albums I've come across in a long time. It's so honest, and raw, and real. Her voice alone is worth the money.

Amazon.com essential recording

"This is the voice of your conscience, baby..." The recording debut of the Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention is a brilliantly wicked counter-strike to the flower power sensibilities prevalent at the time of it's release in 1966. Arguably rock music's first true "concept album," Zappa's aural collage mashes together chunks of psychedelic guitars, outspoken political commentary, cultural satire, and avant-garde musical sensibilities, and then hides it all under cleverly crafted pop melodies. Not diminished in the slightest by the passage of time, Freak Out! remains as vital and relevant today as it was in the 1960's. --Andrew Boscardin

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A gem of the late sixties.......2007-04-12

This is just one of those classics that you could never get enough of, no matter how many spins it gets. A bizzarre and delightfully off-kilter assault on the ears.

'Freak Out' is one of the more unconventional albums of its time. It has that unmistakingly late 60's acid trip vibe to it that really adds a nice touch to the Zappa insanity. 'Freak Out' is full of unconventional, off-kilter, mock-pop songs that really indulge in Zappa's bizzare sense of humor, such as 'Go Cry on Somebody Else's Shoulder', but then it also has its 'moments of clarity' as well. This album really reminds me of Pink Floyd's 'Saucerful of Secrets' except with more humor and less LSD. Even though the music is aimed in different directions, the production and mix are really similar in my opinion. Everything on this album is completely, delightfully, off the wall.

From the almost instrumental arrangments of vocalizations that would later be the foundation of Mike Patton's Mr. Bungle, to the extremely long sound samples twords the end, everything fits together perfectly in its own, strange, Zappatastic way. The sound samples are really a key part to this album rather than simple filler. Zappa prove to be absolutely and completely original by preforming magnificant pieces of avant-garde art with seemingly mindless noise.

'Freak Out' is truly a gem of the late sixties, and an absolute must have for anyone who considers himself the slightest Zappa fan. Scratch that, for anyone who considers himself a fan of avant-garde music itself, this album is totally classic.

5 out of 5 stars The album that made me a Zappa freak.......2006-12-19

My first Zappa album was the Grand Wazoo and I thought it was pretty good. I didn't think it was that great though. But I am happy that it gave me just enough interest in Zappa to buy this album. This album attacks pop music so well you would think that it was serious and not a joke. A few songs on here have music that is not ironic (Hungry Freaks Daddy, I ain't got no heart, Who are the Brain Police, Trouble Every Day, and Help I'm a Rock) most of the songs are simple pop songs with cliche lyrics and thats what makes them so funny. A concept album is an album that has a theme the entire time or tells a story, and this was the first rock album that had a concept (yes it even preceded Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band)I have since bought one other album by Zappa (You are What You Is) and I can't choose which of the two I like better. I have really connected with his music recently and I plan on buying many of his albums. The lead work is very good for its time, but his later albums definately have WAY better guitar solos. He doesn't satire every form of life on this album like he does on later albums, but he definately satires sappy made for radio pop songs. The songs I listed above are more expirimental and those are my favorites on this album and they will hint at what Zappa will create later. It's hard to belive that so many great albums can come from one man, C'ya latter Zappa Rules!

5 out of 5 stars The first step in Zappa's amazing world...........2006-12-05

In many cases, when an artist puts out a great debut album (or film, book, TV programme), it is quite often a pain in the butt, as they have an enormously difficult time coming up with something greater. Orson Welles's Citizen Kane is considered the greatest film of all time by many critics, how do you top that? Welles was never really able to. Zappa did. Freak Out is an amazing album, yet, Zappa was able to constantly do work that was even better than this album, one of the greatest debuts in rock history. Zappa made interesting and artistic work up until his death (which is the day I'm writing this review). This is one of my favorites, especially the last track, the originally side long song The Return of the Son of Monster Magnet. The producer, Tom Wilson, was on acid when Zappa recorded it, so God only knows what the hell transpired in his mind that night. The social commentary on here is still valid, and this is one of the greatest debuts of all time. Zappa never disappointed....

5 out of 5 stars What can one say?.......2006-12-03

I leave the brilliant musical commentary to the other reviewers who are obviously better qualified.
My review consists of one sentence:

I heard it in 1967; never recovered, never wanted to.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most ambitious (not to mention greatest) debuts of all time.......2006-12-02

Frank Zappa's debut is a bizarre, eclectic, hilarious piece of work that's one of the man's best. To be fair, I'm not at all familiar with Zappa. But the Zappa I've heard, I like a lot. Here he divides his time between sarcastic pieces of social commentary (Hungry Freaks, Daddy; Who are the Brian Police?; You're Probably Wondering Why I'm Here; Trouble Every Day) and hilarious love song parodies (I Ain't Got No Heart; Go Cry on Somebody Else's Shoulder; Motherly Love; Anyway the Wind Blows; How Could I Be Such a Fool?) and he pulls it off either way. Oh, and the twenty-minute sound collage that ends the disc is bizarre, but it's also friggin' hilarious and so ahead of its time, it's jaw-dropping. Wowie Zowie and You Didn't Try to Call Me aren't all that good, but the rest is awesome. At LEAST buy it for the hilarious liner notes.
Best tunes: Hungry Freaks, Daddy; I Ain't Got No Heart; Who Are the Brain Police?; Go Cry on Somebody Else's Shoulder; You're Probably Wondering Why I'm Here; Trouble Every Day; Help I'm a Rock/It Can't Happen Here; Return of the Son of Monster Magnet

Concrete Blonde's best and most mainstream album benefits considerably from a stronger focus and good production. Consistent songwriting means a lack of weak material, and the dark inflection of most of the music gives the songs an edge. The title track remains a favorite of the goth set, though it was the hit single "Joey" that garnered the most attention. The up-tempo songs are the best; "The Sky Is a Poisonous Garden", "Days and Days", and "The Beast" really stand out. Of the slower songs, "Tomorrow, Wendy" has an irony that gives it an edge. Concrete Blonde's later albums don't really measure up to the quality of this one. -- Genevieve Williams

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A prototype goth album.......2007-01-05

I haven't heard any of the group's other albums, but I recently got around to "Bloodletting" after finding it for cheap. I had heard the title track which was pretty memorable and one my parents had listened to when I was pretty young, as well as "Joey" and "Tomorrow, Wendy." The latter is so stand-out-ish. It's disturbing yet beautiful and I don't know what draws me into the track. It has such a cynical view on the world, yet somehow it really appeals to me.

However, I will give one warning: If you don't like dark music that is also humorless, you're not going to enjoy "Bloodletting." Aside from the fact that it arguably takes it self a bit too seriously, and some tracks come off as rather average on here, but there are plenty of great cuts -- particularly "The Sky Is a Poisonous Garden" and "Darkening of the Light." It is well written and performed, though.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Album.......2006-12-18

Concrete Blonde is a 3 piece band consisting of James Mankey on guitars, Paul Thompson on drums, and the incredible vocals of Jeanette Napolitano (she also played bass). The band never got huge, but had a solid loyal following. "Bloodletting" was probably their commercial peak and contained the single "Joey" which received significant amount of radio and MTV airplay when it came out. The song is a good one about an alcoholic, but is not very representative of the rest of the album. Concrete Blonde is often described as a Goth band. Whether or not they are true Goth is debatable, but their music is certainly dark and haunting with the subject matter of vampires, darkness and depression prominent. There is really not a bad track on this album. Napolitano's vocals range from a low growl to soaring heights as her voice weaves itself around the melodies. Guitarist Mankey is an expert at weaving dark textures that invoke a sinister air to much of the band's music. Highlights include the title track "Bloodletting" telling a tale of vampires in New Orleans. "The Sky Is A Poisonous Garden", "Caroline", "Days and Days" "The Beast" and "Lullaby" are all solid songs. The album closer "Tomorrow Wendy" is a powerful statement of loss and dismay. The whole album is strong and worth picking up. It amazes me that this band never got bigger than it did.

4 out of 5 stars CLASSIC UNDERGROUND GOODNESS.......2006-11-02

If you've not heard of concrete blonde you should consider this cd if only for the haunting "JOEY". Their 1st album is probably better, but this one is also a keeper!!

I heard a song on the radio last fall and could not get it out of my head. It was "Mexican Moon". I had to buy the album. I was totally immersed by that song. I have several of her albums now, her voice is so sensual. When I played it for my wife while driving one day, she fell in love with it too. Johnette has a talent and a great voice.

5 out of 5 stars Their Best.......2006-12-19

The follow-up to their commercially successful "Bloodletting" finds Concrete Blonde treading on slightly different ground. Much of this album deals with love and the highs and lows that it can take people's emotions. Of course when Concrete Blonde sings about love there is always a sense of melancholy and sorrow just on the horizon. Religion, and detailed character studies also populate the disc. The music is influenced by Mexico and the southwest with frequent use of flamenco style guitar and a general feel that brings to mind dusty southwestern towns in which many of the songs characters inhabit. "Moon" is an excellent disc and it continues to boggle my mind why this band never had more commercial success than they had. The music is top notch, and even more varied on this disc than the previous one. The lyrics are emotional and provocative painting mental pictures that linger in the listeners head. Over all of this Napolitano's vocals weave their magic spell on the songs in the way that only she could sing them. Every song on this album is a winner, with highlights including the opener "Jenny I Read", the title track "Mexican Moon" (two versions, one in English and one in Spanish). The creepy "Jonestown" with its recorded introduction of Jim Jones. "Heal It Up" was the single that should have done much better than it did. "One Of My Kind" would have fit right in on "Bloodletting". Hell, they are all great. I have not listened to this disc in a long time and pulling out again reminds me of just how good it is.

5 out of 5 stars TEN stars out of five!!.......2006-09-12

Not only CONCRETE BLONDE's best album ever, but one of the 10 cd's i'd take to an island...And I've got more that 5.000.
I was lucky enough to meet Johnette in person to let her know.

5 out of 5 stars Musical intensity.......2004-12-11

If you're looking for rock music that refuses to indulge in cliches, soften its edges or resort to aimless jamming, this album is for you. I heartily agree with a previous reviewer, who expressed his incredulity that Concrete Blonde never attained greater recognition or popularity. And of the half dozen or so superior albums that the group released, "Mexican Moon" is, in my opinion, the best.

Any discussion of the band has to begin with J. Napolitano's incredible voice, and she establishes its power from the first track, "Jenny I Read," a vocal and instrumental performance delivered with astonishing dramatic intensity.

Napolitano's vocals serve as a perfect complement to the searing instrumental delivery of the band on "Heal It Up," "One of My Kind," and, most memorably, "I Call It Love," which should be listened to closely today.

This album -- and this group -- isn't afraid to expose raw feeling, anger and cynicism, but it also can show a softer side, as on the title cut. The lyricism of the latter shows it's possible to recognize the beauty in life without sacrificing the edge that all of us develop from life in the rough-and-tumble world.

5 out of 5 stars the years have not been kind to me i know. . .heal it up.......2003-10-30

This is my favorite album of all time.

It's genius still runs around in my head if the form of day of the dead inspired skeletons, the effortless duende of skilled flamenco dancers, the corrupt art scene, drunken adventures south of the border, travelling without escaping anything "still thinking of you..." and lastly of love and its agendas which none of us seem to have the map for.

Johnette's voice is the most evocative voice that I can ever remember hearing. The lyrical content of this album is so intricately layered that one could spend endless hours dissecting them. . .or just go with the music and you'll find yourself on familiar turf but translated throught the genius of Concrete Blonde.

3 out of 5 stars A Jazz-Reggae Summit.......2006-04-02

If anyone is entitled to reinterpret Bob Marley's music, it's fellow Kingstonian Monty Alexander. For this, his second outright tribute to the reggae king (the first being 1999's Stir It Up), Alexander went down to the studio where he himself first recorded at the age of fifteen, the same studio that Marley bought near the end of his own life and rechristened Tuff Gong, and with the help of a batch of locals and N'Orleans trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis, locked into a steady pulse on this set of Marley compositions. It's an attractive undertaking, smoothing out the rough edges of the composer's rebel spirit while deconstructing the simple but irresistible melodies. Marsalis marches "Simmer Down" through the French Quarter and the Rod Dennis Mento Band takes it loosely to the streetcorner on "Three Little Birds," but most of this CD is firmly rooted in mellow, groove-happy Trenchtown rock.

Fourteen years and six albums into her recording career, British thrush Julia Fordham hasn't quite earned the following one might have forecast for her when she arrived with a bit of fanfare in the late '80s. That said, she's persevered long enough to have garnered the admiration of a core of devotees and more than a few notable musicians, including this collection's guests, India Arie and Joe Henry. That Fordham has become something of a singer's singer is not surprising given the cool intelligence of her phrasing and the versatility of her husky-to-piercing range, which recalls trilling '70s singer-songwriters Minnie Riperton (a cover of Riperton's signature song, "Loving You," is hidden at the end of the album and the late singer provides the inspiration for the album's penultimate song, "Roadside Angel"), Phoebe Snow, and the towering Joni Mitchell. Mitchell's former husband Larry Klein, who worked the board on Fordham's 1994 effort, Falling Forward, returns to the producer's roll, cushioning Fordham's expositions on desire ("I'd take a bullet for you") and destitution ("Your friends warned me about you"). Concrete Love is the work of a stalwart singer who's perseverance has paid off. "I have not gone the distance but I am on my way," she sings on the album closer. That's quite apparent. --Steven Stolder

As female singer songwriters go I just can't understand why Julia Fordham has never reach the heights that she deserved. Live - you will struggle to see as good a show; recorded this album captures this English songwriter's strengths.

Good tunes, catchy hooks great voice. Buy this!

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2005-07-02

I bought this CD because I really like the song Butterfly when I heard it online one day. I never really buy a full album without hearing a few more songs than one, but I really liked the track so I went a head and bought it. Let me tell you, Butterfly ended up being just one of many stand out songs. I love Missing Man. This song is arranged so perfectly. I also like "Wake up with You (The I Wanna Song)", "Foolish Thing", and "It's Another You Day." This CD has made me become a huge Julia Fordham fan!

1 out of 5 stars Give me a break, please.......2005-03-01

"Butterfly" is absolutely the worst song I have heard in my entire life. No kidding. I first heard it in a Crate & Barrel store in Michigan and I broke out laughing.

5 out of 5 stars lush, textured, pop album with deeper voiced singer.......2004-09-24

Her voice is deeper than I'm used to, but the music is just too smooth and sexy to disaggree with. I know that people will be hung up on her voice, get over it, it's solid. Sure, it adult contemporary at its most unapologetic, but that's not always a bad thing.

5 out of 5 stars Live Masterpiece.......2007-05-11

This album is tied for my favorite live album of all time with Nocturne by the Banshees. Johnette Napolitano was really pumped up and inspired for this show. She has such emotion in her delivery and great nuances in her voice. The selection of songs is excellent. You get the best of their old songs and the best of their first comeback album 'Group Therapy.' This would be a good choice if you were looking to have that first Concrete Blonde album. Johnette has announced that the band is officially retired. They were one of the greatest rock bands and one of the most overlooked given their talent. Johnette writes greatlyrics plays awesome bass, sings, screams, dances and twirls in front of a super talented band. I 've seen them live and it was an unforgettable enriching memory. Since evidently they will never play together again, get this album, which captures their live energy quite well. If you don't know the band your missing out and should get this album. This was an easy 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best live rock CDs ever.......2006-08-20

Johnette is the best rock singer ever, in my opinion, as since her 2002 comeback she has surpassed even Janis Joplin and Grace Slick. And she is a much more prolific songwriter than either, especially Janis who hardly wrote. And she's one of the best rock bass players ever. Whew. Mankey is godlike as always, but better, as they have both improved. Ramirez is Bonham-like, as always live with the Blonde. I only wish I could have seen more shows before they broke up. Oh well, Johnette is still the most important rock musician right now, and fans should check out her myspace site and offical website for tour and other info. This is a poem that I wrote about Johnette after seeing Concrete Blonde live for the first two times in the summer of 2002. It's kind of cheesy, but heartfelt. I'm working on a PhD in poetry, and she is still a better poet than me. J

Nature embodied, force uncontainable
Yet wielded with large consciousness
Who could constrain you, your wild lightnings
Crackling, surging
No one, no nation of fools
Living in a past that never was, never could be
There should be no mold for truth
What hammer or chain could withstand its
Inevitable flowering?
I do not wish to.
The eloquence of your vocal surge
Is a connecting link, a lightning rod.
Life and love - can they be one and the same?
I dare not think so
Unless they both flowed from you
Like a shimmering tidal wave
On the verge of sweeping over me
And all the traditions that I walk, sit, sleep among,
Bringing a clean destruction
And hope for this failing world.
God's lioness come to full power
How can such a sensitive spirit
Live as a warrior?
She moves with the assuredness of a warrior
Going into battle
And the enemy is everywhere - she cares not.
This is beauty - the exercise of the will
In poetic expression.
This is song - the harmony of courage and
Self-possession.
The poise that shuns the comforting façade
And moves from moment to moment
Without false security.
She is her message - the meaning is pure
Beauty of the soul - there is no other.

5 out of 5 stars Short and sweet review.......2004-07-05

As many "Live in Rio" albums do....this one really ROCKS. Buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Real Alternative Rock: Punk is Alive.......2004-02-22

Although I've heard several Concrete Blonde songs over the years ('Tomorrow Wendy', 'Bloodletting' and the amazing cover of Leonard Cohen's 'Everybody Knows', among them), 'Live in Brazil' is the first of their albums I listened to. Although 'Live in Brazil' is not a perfect introduction, it is truly a great album, and I'm sure I'll be listening to lots more from the Los Angeles Trio.

The greatest disadvantage is 'Live in Brazil' is that the songs lack something of an identity, blurring a bit with each other. Even after multiple listening, I'm still not quite sure, looking at the song lists, what 'Little Conversations' or 'Your Haunted Friend' are like, exactly.

But this is a minor flaw. This is an album with amazing guitars, powerful punky melodies, and lots of enthusiasm by the band. Mostly, it is Johnette Napolitano amazing vocal that carries the melodies, firing haunting eulogies ('Tomorrow Wendy') ironic love songs ('Tonight') and angst ridden tirades ('Violent') with equal conviction.

Among the highlights in these two albums is opener 'God is a Bullet', which features one of the best song titles I've encountered in recent times, combined with a great if simple ascending bass line and a great refrain: The music stops while Napolitano screams "God is bullet have mercy on us everyone".

Another highlight is the Leonard Cohen cover, "Everybody Knows", introduced with an amusing commentary, "This is a song by a great-great-great-great-great-great-greatgreatGREAT Man". If Cohen's song was an ironic satire, a tale of depression told with a laugh around the bar, Concrete Blonde turn it into a bitter, haunting punk rock song, ending, quite appropriately, with Napolitano's version of Cohen's bitterest lyric in the song 'Everybody knows that you've been discrete/ but there were so many bitches you just had to meet/ without your cloths/Every body Knows'.

Also memorable is 'I was a Fool', where the acoustic song becomes in the final chorus to a Post Punk yell, with heavy guitars and bass to match, "Scene of the Perfect Crime' which is just beautiful and sad, and set closer 'Tomorrow Wendy' an alternative rock classic, even if the guitar reminds me a little bit too much of the Pixies's 'Where Is My Mind?'

Concrete Blonde's live album is a must have for fans of alternative rock. If you like guitars distorted, songs aggressive, and vocals angry, bitter and chaotic, this is an album for you.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful album.......2003-12-21

Happened to catch a song by Concrete Blonde in a store and went looking for an album. I am surprised that I haven't discovered this great band before now. I want to particularly thank the guy who complained that entertainers should not express their political opions (unless, presumably, it agrees with the opinions authorized by Big Brother). I am particularly pleased to have the opportunity to take a small action in opposition to this particularly repugnant and unAmerican notion, and to support a band with the courage to speak out against those who are trying to destroy the most cherished American values.

    Album Description

Concrete Blonde's first album not only entered the Billboard Top 100, but it also generated 3 singles: "Still In Hollywood", "Dance Along The Edge," and "True." Amazing accomplishment for a debut album.

This CD is as vital today as is was when it was first released in 1986. Even more so now that Superfecta is reissuing this album digitally remastered with expanded packaging and lyrics.

Futhermore, noted journalist Kevin Couch has compiled new liner notes based on a 2004 interview with Johnette Napolitano and James Mankey in which they discuss the band's early years - a topic that has rarely been seen in print.

Twelve tracks in all, including the non-album cut "It'll Chew You Up And Spit You Out," an alternate version of "Still In Hollywood" with new lyrics.

4 out of 5 stars Pure and True.......2007-05-22

I'm so glad they finally remastered this classic, Concrete Blonde is one of my all time favorite bands and will forever be played on the Bradley Buzz. I just recently came up with the cash to buy the first CD in this remastered version and can't believe I didn't pick it up earlier. Featuring my ultimate fav CB song "True" plus their classic "Still In Hollywood", the moody and sassy "Dance Along The Edge", the hard rock chill of "Over Your Shoulder", the moody and sad (Makes my sister cry) "Little Sister" ('you're only half a heart away'), this is one of those albums that everyone in the world should own - so go buy it!

    5 out of 5 stars Concrete Blonde.......2007-01-16

I purchased this because I had (and liked) the LP back when this was the medium. Still like the group.

4 out of 5 stars Out of the gate with a bang!.......2007-01-10

The debut from Concrete Blonde is a fierce piece of work. Featuring the bass playing, songwriting and vocal power of Johnette Napolitano and the tough guitar work of Jim Mankey, this album wasn't a big success, but it did show that the band was a force to contend with. If one just went by their first single, "Still in Hollywood", you would think that they were a punk band. Mankey plays a driving, repetitive riff over which Johnette sings a desperate lyric about being trapped on the seedy side of that town. No glamorous movie star life here! It's the album's classic track, but there was a lot more to the group than that.
There are more paranoid rockers, sure, like "Your Haunted Head", "Song for Kim" and "Dance Along the Edge" which also show the bleakness of Napoitano's world view. But there are also touching ballads like "Little Sister" and the acoustic "Make Me Cry" that show she has a vulnerable side, too. The album's second best tune, the loping, catchy "True", is a forthright statement of intregity. CB had a tradition of including a cover song on each of their early albums. But their first choice, George Harrison's "All Things Must Pass" classic "Beware of Darkness", is the one track that doesn't really work. The band's lumbering hard rock style isn't well suited for the song.

Other than that, though, the album is a strong, melodic, guitar based rock record. Tied with "Bloodletting" for the best CB album, it's worth hunting up. The CD includes two extra tracks that weren't on the original LP: an instrumental version of "True", with some nice lead work by Mankey; and "It'll Chew You Up..", which is really "Still in Hollywood, Part 2". They add value to an already cool CD.

5 out of 5 stars Remastered is better!.......2006-05-23

I can hear all the parts the way they were intended--better than a record because no scratches or turntable noise. One of the best CDs ever! Johnette can't be human can she??

4 out of 5 stars A rebuttal to the previous reviewer..........2005-11-27

Contrary to what Gordon Wagner said, Concrete Blonde did not fall immediately into "...the standard L.A. blackhole of one-album-success-and-a-lifetime-of-heroin-use." CB has recorded a few more albums --and I believe are still a band and recording new material-- since this one; and, although they may not have duplicated the chart success with their later efforts over the subsequent years, they did have a modest hit on college and mainstream radio with the Bloodletting tracks "Joey" and "Caroline." Because CB had established a loyal fanbase on alternative radio --when that term still meant something--, singles from subsequent albums had regular airplay on the modern rock stations I listened to throughout the early and mid-'90's, long outlasting the shelflife of fellow bands that emerged at the same time in spite of the fact that the band was led by a female bassist-vocalist which was an original twist on the typical band format. Though rare, there have been bands over the years led by bassist-vocalists and there have also been bands with female bassists as well, but CB is the only one I can recall --Sonic Youth not included b/c Kim Gordon isn't SY's only vocalist on all of that band's songs - swaps singing duties with now-husband Thurston Moore-- to combine the two wildcard band line-up formats. They long outlasted the shelflife of those other bands because they had new things to say and new thematic territories to explore beyond what their first efforts offered, promised and delivered where the vast majority of bands fail to come up with something new to say after the success of thier first effort, hence the term "somphmore jinx." CB experienced no such shortfalls; in fact, they grew in new directions lyrically and mucically and became, in my opinion, one the better of the non-grunge alternative/modern rock acts of the late-'80's to mid-'90's.

--not having been familiar with this particular CB album prior to encountering it here on Amazon, I assigned the rating of 4 stars b/c, based on my high regard for CB's songcraft and musicianship, I'm sure this album's at least above avg., but due to my not actually having heard I'm reluctant to assign any value greater than 4 stars. However, I do plan to buy a copy as soon as I can, so I can get a listen and determine if it's worthy of a rating of 5.

A fabulous, flame-throwing alternate version of "Still In Hollywood" titled "It'll Chew You Up and Spit You Out" leads off this superb collection of rare, live, and previously unreleased material. Other highlights include covers of Leonard Cohen ("Everybody Knows") and Nick Cave ("The Ship Song," sung as a duet by Johnette Napolitano and Steve Wynn); an acoustic "Joey," the now-defunct trio's biggest hit; and a spooky remix of "Bloodletting (The Vampire Song)." 3 out of 5 stars I love CB but this album was just okay to me.......2007-01-13

I picked this album up for the Vampire-Live tune. And for all the other positive reviews. I was very disappointed. I have several of CB CDs and think they're great. But this CD just didn't do it for me.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Album.......2006-10-24

This is my favorite album of all time. It is the album I would want to be able to play if I were stranded on a deserted island. More people have asked me what they are listening to when they hear me playing this album than any other. And they write it down when I tell them.

I usually skip one track, though - "The Sky is a Poisonous Garden." I find it too noisy and chaotic. But to have an album on which just one song is not that great is a pretty rare find.

5 out of 5 stars The best band from L.A. since the Doors.......2005-08-09

Usually when a band (or more often a record label) puts out a "rarities" collection you can usually take it for granted that the horse is dead and being flogged a-plenty for the sake of exploiting an artist's popularity under the guise of promoting some of their lesser-known, more obscure work (while of course making as much extra cash as possible on their name in the bargain).

Thankfully this could not be further from the case with Concrete Blonde's "Still In Hollywood", a collection of B-sides, rarities, cover tunes, and live tracks that rivals any "best of" compilation (there are at least two others to date) that have also been released.

"It'll Chew You Up And Spit You Out" (more accurately "Still In Hollywood Pt. II") is a tremendous start-off point, with alternate lyrics that (to me) seem to better define the state of existence in L.A. as seen through the eyes of a musician who's seen the wrong side of it. "Everybody Knows" is so much more beautiful than Leonard Cohen's original version (which should go without saying; Johnette Napolitano's voice is a true thing of beauty, what Patti Smith could've been had she ever decided to, you know, take singing lessons). "Free" is a high-energy punk-influenced two-chord rant with a great chorus hook, and the live version of "God Is A Bullet" is SO much better than the studio original that I only ever listen to the live track anymore. Jim Mankey's pickless style of guitarplaying comes off better live than similar artists (Robby Krieger as an example) and really smokes in this one. "Probably Will" tones it back a bit, resolute and acoustically resetting the tone of the album. "Mandicello" is one my alltime favorite Cheap Trick tunes, and Johnette's voice actually sounds more masculine than Robin Zander on the original. This is another example of a cover version exceeding the original (handily).

"The Ship Song" I don't care for at all...it just doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the tracks (the fact that so much of this compilation CD works as a cohesive effort is testimony to just how good this band really was). And the acoustic version of "Joey" is as intimate as you could possibly expect; Johnette's voice is absolutely naked in its intensity and the lack of greater musical accompaniment encourages her to take the vocal to a level that was lacking on the studio version (which is in itself just a terrific recrding, one of their best songs ever). "Little Wing"...possibly the most-covered Jimi Handrix song of all time, and seemingly impossible to perform badly. The Blonde do a creditable version here, as well...Hendrix fans will be appreciative. "Roses Grow" and "The Sky Is A Poisonous Garden" are live tracks, with "Roses Grow" being the weaker of the two (although as a between-songs-in-a-set rap it works well, I'm sure...Jim had time to grab a beer or restring a guitar with it). THe extended mix of "Bloodletting" is okay...if you really liked the song this won't get old; if it wasn't one of your favorites to begin with the extended version will be insufferable in no time. "Simple Twist Of Fate"...a Bob Dylan cover that just spirals into utter damnation. It's a great song, and they pull it off very well...but it is depressing as hell to listen to. "Side Of The Road" likewise, but "100 Games of Solitaire" kicks in and picks up just in time, a nice, honkin' blues perfect for the road. A live reinterpretation of "Tomorrow, Wendy" finishes the album, and I admit that I prefer the studio version of this one better. They went from "epic" to "stripped-down, bare-bones" in tone and for this song it doesn't work in my opinion.

Here it is, then. It you weren't fortunate enough to hear these guys prior to the "alternative revolution" you could do a lot worse than starting with this compilation to get your feet wet. Just overall a tremendous colletion of work that any other band would consider themselves lucky to have as "A" material; the fact that the Blonde could piece together leavings of this quality makes them truly a band to be reckoned with.

5 out of 5 stars Fills in the blanks..........2004-08-18

An essential to anyone's collection. Several of the more popular reasons would be for the acoustic rendition of Joey (originally aired on an MTV segment), Everybody Knows (from the film Pump Up the Volume) and a remix of Bloodletting that is phenomenal.

A live version of Tomorrow, Wendy and 100 Games of Solitaire are two of my favorites from the album. Some mellow cuts and some rocking ones render this a must have.

It's a chance to recognize their range and how talented this band really was (is?). They are one of the most underrated bands out there.

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent b-sides, etc........2003-10-15

Whenever I listen to their albums, especially this one, I can't understand why they weren't as popular as say "The Cure", or "REM". The talent is overflowing, and the music is just beautiful. For the new fan, I would still suggest "Recollection" first, but for any fanatic, this is a must. The live stuff, the covers, and b-sides, all top notch. The "God is a Bullet" b-side "Free" is awesome. The cover of "Mandocello" blows "Cheap Tricks" out of the water. And the live "Tomorrow Wendy" is just a perfect way to end this cd. Overall, this is at least as good as any of their proper albums, and I highly recommend it.
