Amazon.com's Best of 1998
It's been a dozen years since the Beastie Boys broke, and on Hello Nasty, they show that--though they've grown up, matured, and just gotten older--they're still in touch with the inner brat that always made them so much fun. Amazon.com's Best of 1998

It's been a dozen years since the Beastie Boys broke, and on Hello Nasty, they show that--though they've grown up, matured, and just gotten older--they're still in touch with the inner brat that always made them so much fun. Turns out that the brat's turned into an ace record collector with choice taste in collaborators, too. --Randy Silver

Amazon.com essential recording

On their previous album, Ill Communication, the Beastie Boys expanded their parameters yet again, melding cutting-edge hip-hop with slinky jazz, butt-wiggling funk, weepy classical, and combustive punk rock. Four years down the line, the group's music isn't nearly as organic. They've all but abandoned the guitars and returned to the kind of old-school beats and rhythms that defined their groundbreaking 1989 disc, Paul's Boutique. But Hello Nasty isn't a regression, and it's anything but a cop-out: in addition to resurrecting the best elements from their past, the Beastie Boys have embraced the dopest high tech gizmos of the computer age. Hello Nasty gurgles like galactic sulfur pools, whizzes like a Sega game, and slurps and thumps like the best backward Hendrix loops. Add in a cavalcade of Latin percussion, calliope keyboards, and exotic samples (Stravinsky, Stephen Sondheim, Jazz Crusaders, Rachmaninoff), and you're left with one of the most creative and jubilant hip-hop records to date, even if you exclude witty lyrics like, "I'm the king of Boggle / There is none higher / I get 11 points off the word quagmire" ("Putting Shame in Your Game"). To paraphrase über-critic Robert Christgau, Paul's Boutique may have been the band's Pet Sounds, but Hello Nasty is the Beasties' Sgt. Pepper's. --Jon Wiederhorn

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2006-04-06

i found out about the beastie boys after buying their solid gold hits cd, and i loved intergalactic and body movin, so i got this. this is great too, but my only complaint is the instrumental tracks. what is their point? other than that this is a great cd.

2 out of 5 stars I used to have this.......2006-02-21

I left this cd under the seat of my car for like 3 years, during which time, it had popped out of the crappy case and got all scratched up. When I finally cleaned out my car, I threw the cd away.

5 out of 5 stars a different sound.......2006-02-20

I like how the beasite boys experiment with their sound and they definitley do that on this one,it's a must own.

5 out of 5 stars Hello Nasty & Extra Tracks.......2000-04-23

The albumb Hello Nasty is Excellent I highly recommend it. I am not sure but I assume the extra tracks are the ones of the tour edition. I have a copy of "Tour Edition - Australia and New Zealand"; it is not in what I would call a box but a cardboard case like their instrumental album. It folds out into 5 double sided' squares with elaborate artwork to match the theme of the front cover. The Hello Nasty cd is the same but in edition to this there is a blue bonus disc containing four extra songs. 1- Hail Sagan (Special K), 2- Body Movin' (Fatboy Slim Remix), 3- Intergalactic (Prisoners Of Technology Remix), 4-Peanut & Butter & Jelly. All are excellent songs as you would expect from these scientists of sound. I would only recommend this special edition album to extreme fans who like me are on a quest to collect all of their CDs and LPs.

5 out of 5 stars Has to be one of the greatest by the Beastie Boys.......1998-11-04

I have listened to all of the Beastie Boys albums and this has to be one of the greatest. The smooth lyrics in this cd can either get you pumped up, or totally relaxed. 22 new and great songs from the Beastie Boys. A definate buy.

5 out of 5 stars Definately a solid album.......1998-10-29

Hello Nasty is definately a solid album in every respect. It's one of the few new releases this year I can listen to without skipping a track. And the live version of "Slow and Low" on the import is certainly worth the extra money for any dedicated B-Boy fan.

5 out of 5 stars a most excellent album.......1998-10-08

the beastie boys have done it again.... they've created another good album. a variety of sounds are seen on this album, ranging from hip-hop to mellow to techno. it's refreshing! i suggest this album to anyone and everyone! a definte must buy!!

5 out of 5 stars the Beastie boys are back in full force........1998-09-10

After a brief break from their last album, "Ill Communication", the boys are definately back. They are always on the cutting edge of not just rap but music as a whole. This is one of those cd's that just grows on you everytime you hear it.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......1998-07-24

This album is amazing. It has such great diversity and style, that it totally says everything about the Beastie Boys. In my opinion, this is their best yet, and I think they will continue to release great music.

5 out of 5 stars Pauls Boutique, 15 years later.......2007-01-19

As anyone knows, the Beastie Boys made their greatest album in 1989, Pauls Boutique, as funky party album filled with nonstop samples and no filler. Well New York State of Mind is like Paul's Botique 15 years later. DJ Green Lantern is an exxcelent DJ, and he makes all the tracks feel as fresh and catchy, if not catchier, as when they were first released. Some moments on this album are absolute, indescribable strokes of genius, such as putting Biggie Smalls on the hook for "Hey Ladies," Ludacris rapping "When I move you move" during the chorus of "Body Movin'." But the true highlight of the album is "Looking Down The Barrell of a Gun," which uses the instrumental from Jay-Z's "U Dont Know," and a Biggie Smalls rap to create one of the most indescribable jolts of pure adrenaline in recent years. There are also some new tracks loosely based on some of the Beasties' older songs, such as Busta Rhymes doing an excellent modern version of "Paul Revere," and better yet, MOP doing a updated "No Sleep Till Brooklyn." The only track that doesn't quite seem to fit is a Clipse freestlye over the instrumental for "Pass the Mic." However, that track is also excellent and from the beggining to end, New York State of Mind is undeniably an absolute hip-hop masterpeice, perhaps even matching Pauls Botique.
