Few would claim that Midnight Oil's Peter Garrett is the world's greatest rock vocalist, but he clearly means what he sings. On Diesel and Dust, Garrett and company serve up a collection of solid pop-rock songs that follow the groundwork laid by their early albums. Intrinsic to their sound is a guitars-bass-drums attack spiced occasionally with horns and keyboards and capped with Garrett's throaty vocals. Garrett's lyrics on Deisel and Dust are noteworthy because they are not about love or personal relationships but instead address larger issues. "Beds Are Burning" is a call to return the land expropriated from Australia's aboriginal peoples, while "The Dead Heart" and "Bullroarer" celebrate their rich cultural heritage. Many bands and artists have made some sort of political or social concern apparent in their work, but few have done so as consistently, dedicatedly, and tunefully as Midnight Oil. --Al Massa

My single favorite band of all time - nothing will ever come close. This album is a great introduction to their sound. Full of incredible passion, powerful lyrics, unreal guitar solos, and creativity and originality in every song. The popular Beds are Burning is not even in my top 5 songs on this album (Sell My Soul is #1, and possibly my number 1 song of all time. Dreamworld is pretty special too).

If you fall in love with the album, as I did, you can move onto some of their older stuff - 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1, or Red Sails in the Sunset are similarly incredible, and even more creative.

The Oils are truly a special band, and 6 years after their breakup, I still pop in my mix CD's in the car when my kids aren't around. I'll never understand why they didn't become as popular as, say, U2 or REM - they are all that and more. But I suppose it makes it that much more amazing for the die hard fans that still rave about the Oils to this day.

Diesel and Dust is the perfect merger of rock and social progressivism. Never has a record compelled me to feel as moved as this one, particularly on songs like 'Warakurna', 'Beds are Burning', 'The Dead Heart', or 'Dreamworld'. Never has anyone described with such power and poignancy the plight of the underclass or displaced minorities (in this case the Aboriginal peoples of Australia) in a manner that anyone can relate to. The evocative words ("The western desert lives and breathes at 45 degrees"), the tones used on Rob Hirst's drums, Jim Moginie's and Martin Rotsey's dueling acoustic guitars on the 'Dead Heart', and Peter Garrett's gravel like edge to his singing on tracks like 'Put Down that Weapon', 'Arctic World' or 'Sell My Soul' evoke the imagery of a band that traveled for miles through sandy hot desert lands in pickup trucks and tried to make sense of their experiences upon returning to Sydney. The music intimates the myriad of emotions that the band experienced after meeting and living among simple people, witnessing their stories of hardship and difficulties and the uplifting hope and dignity they found among them.

The record, despite its serious themes, is life affirming, as the defiantly rocking closer "Sometimes" appropriately underscores. Midnight Oil believes in the redemptive power of the human spirit in spite of the injustice and inequities in our world today.

From a musical standpoint, each song is flawlessly crafted and produced. Warne Livesey does an oustanding job of integrating the sounds of the earth and of the band, with the sounds of electronic beats and synthesizers. This is a modern rock record to be sure, in spite of its folksy songs and socially conscious subject matter. This record and "10,9,8..." were Midnight Oil's finest hours. However, this record has a power all its own, as any time we see hardship, suffering and inequality in this world, all we in the west need to do is listen to this record to understand how it tastes, smells and feels to be in that condition. A remarkable record. One for the ages. Get it if you don't have it.

Somewhere in a back corner of my mind, I foster an ambition in my next life of being Peter Garrett's runt sibling (I mean, I'd have to be a runt, wouldn't I? He's bigger than almost anybody I've ever seen on stage doing rock and roll) and the drummer in the band. That's how involved I get with Midnight Oil's music when I hear it. "Diesel And Dust", probably their most media-friendly album - even if, as an American, you don't get some of the political references (and make no mistake; Midnight Oil's music is not love songs or mundane angst; almost without reserve, it is ALL political) is also pretty much their most tuneful. That said, Peter cannot be said to be singing as much as pushing, growling, and wailing the songs out, albeit in a more or less agreeably melodic way. I could be accused of being not very picky, but personally I prefer voices like that, with genuine emotion and pure guts coming from every note. Pretty, trained singing is really fairly lifeless to me. This is the real deal, raw, angry, demanding your attention. I lived in Australia for a while - where I became acquainted with this music - and got to know the politics behind the songs. Down Under, you have a political opinion and you espouse it, sometimes loudly, but never do you hide your candle under a basket - everybody has a personal view and they're not afraid to let you know what it is. Midnight Oil, along with a lot of Aussie bands, uses their music as a forum, as shown when they set up an ad hoc outdoor performance in front of the Exxon headquarters in New York some time ago. (Wish I'd been there.) "Diesel And Dust" is rife with topical references, which still play well, nearly 20 years on; the genocide over generations of the Aboriginal people - did you know they were used in biological experiments, a lot of them quite deadly, until fairly recently? - ecological suicide, pollution, almost any hot-button topic is not beyond the reach of the Oils. And yet the music is so singable and danceable that they're able to get you thinking about the content before you even know you are. It's hard to pick a favourite on the album - the only song I'm not crazy about, and even then I usually don't skip over it ,is "Whoah" because it's a little draggy. "Bullroarer", "The Dead Heart", "Warakurna" and "Sell My Soul" are probably what I would list as favourites, for the sake of argument and discussion; all of them get my blood moving, and the instrumentation does not take a backseat to Peter's insistent yowls and vocal crescendos. Everything that comes from instrument or throat complements the other. This is probably my favourite Midnight Oil album, because it was my introduction to the band, but it is by no means the only one in my collection. I would have to recommend it highly to anyone who wants to expand their musical inventory - and get a little commentary on the side that is perhaps new to them. And next life, Peter. You don't have far to go to find your drummer.

I just noticed that I reviewed this album years ago, as "A music fan" [October 23, 1999]. Since I've listened to this album again in the meantime, I thought I'd try and do a more informative job this time!].

As per my original review, I have to say that it is an open question of whether this album is the Oils best, or "10-1" takes the honour.

Initially, my reaction was that the album had a killer opening three tracks. On relistening to it, it gets better, as some songs grow on you even more.

Here are my favourite tracks:

Beds are burning: pop/rock classic, melodic and clangy at the same time.

Put down that weapon: sort of in the same vein as "10-1"'s "Short memory". The track is a slow pop song that has a brilliant change of pace...a delicious bass riff veers into hyper, clangy rock, and then returns to a slow send off. Terrific stuff.

Dreamworld: one fan told me that the lead singer was a big fan of The Beach Boys. I'd always considered this song as a Beach Boys style song. It's my favourite song from the album, probably. Not the best intro, but once the harmonies and melodies kick in, it's a terrific pop song.

The dead heart: this is a real sing-a-long pop song. You should find the "do do do do do do"'s really catchy.

Sell my soul: this is the song that has REALLY grown on me-a lost Oils classic, a la "Sleep". I love the attention grabbing, funky opening "I am ready. Let's begin". Again, the song has strong melody, as is usual for quality Oils songs.

Sometimes: probably the best of the rest.

In my mind, I always think of this album as in the same vein as The Red Hot Chilli Peppers' "Californication" album. Both albums are immensely strong. This Oils album has really only song which I don't rate that highly, but I can't remember which it is! Californication is like that too, but this Oil's album has stronger songs, and more of them.

Same goes when comparing the Oils "10-1" album with the Chilli Peppers' "Blood sugar sex magik". "10-1" is great because of the four songs on it which form the foundation of the Oils' greatest songs ever. BSSM by the RHCP is also a very good album due to the presence of four songs, but again, I think the Oil's album has the stronger four songs.

One guy came to me one day and said "listen to that one buddy, it's pretty cool". It was in 1993, and most people had never heard about this band in Europe, including myself.

And it was the great shock. It takes only a few seconds to realize what a masterpiece you have. This kind of thing happens rarely. Such an incredible voice, and this powerful, wild sound, coming from "elsewhere"... They reinvented rock & roll, and they did not joke!
Beds are burning was this kind of song that could appeal to almost everyone, from the hard rock purist to the radio amateur. The melody itself is eternal.
Another fantastic song on the album is "put down that weapon". Musically as impressive as the former one, it impresses also with the passion Garret has to deliver his peaceful message.

There is no weak track on this album. I mean, try any of them alone, and you will have something between "positively inspired" and "awesome".
Every track has got this sense of rough urgency that is the trademark of the group. In the same time the whole is perfectly produced and played.

Just my opinion, in the "ranking game" : Now that I know most of their albums, I would give 5 stars for 3 of them :

3. Place without a postcard

Nashville-born and New York City-based singer Laura Cantrell shines as one of the sweetest hearts at the rodeo on this excellent follow-up to her 2000 debut Not the Tremblin' Kind. Her warm, precise country-folk style has brought her comparisons to Kitty Wells, Neko Case, Nanci Griffith, and Emmylou Harris, but she herself seems bound to be one of those singers that folks get compared to. Super-influential BBC DJ John Peel even called Tremblin' Kind "my favorite record of the last 10 years and possibly my life." The photogenic Cantrell, who herself has hosted an award-winning old-school-meets-new radio program on New Jersey's WFMU for many years, demonstrates fabulous taste in songs here, covering a range from Amy Rigby and Dave Schramm to Jim and Jesse and Kitty Wells. The playing by Cantrell's Brooklyn-based band is superb, the arrangements subtly conforming to each track: a Byrds-y twang to "Vaguest Idea," a beautiful lap steel-led old school country vibe on "Broken Again," and a nuanced "newgrass" approach for the heart-melting title track. I feel hesitant to add my two cents; I am a classical fan, not country. Good singing, though, is good singing, whether it be opera, country, or anything else. This disc was given to me and I simply had to hear what such a stunningly beautiful woman as her sounded like. I was not disappointed. Her vocal style is completely free from annoying mannerisms and cheap over-emoting. Her delivery is at all times tasteful, intelligent, understated, and honest. Like all great singing artists, she lets each song speak for itself. She mixes styles quite successfully, as noted by some of the other reviewers here. The songs don't all sound alike, and there is not a loser in the bunch. Her voice is light and pure, like Emmy Lou Harris, but not as reedy as Harris. And she is always utterly feminine. This disc will appeal to anyone who appreciates honest emotions, tastefully delivered.

A clear, fluid, and natural voice, somewhat like that of Emylou Harris, accompanied by accoustic and electric guitars, and drums, and sometimes a mandolin. The style is rather country music, with some tunes reminding me of the Beatles, the Bangles, the early Lucinda Williams, Norman Blake, Alison Krauss, or Susanna Van Tassel. I only heard one of her songs on the radio, and was happy with the rest of her album when I got it. My two favorite songs of the CD are Early Years and Yonder Comes a Freight Train.

A fine piece of work by Ms. Cantrell. Her band does not distract attention from her glorious voice, nor does it need to; her voice is so solidly infectious that it can stand on its own. I found myself soothed and inspired by Laura's style and sound. Track twelve, the old Frankie Bailes waltz, is simply beautiful.

It is a telling commentary on modern country music that some of the finest new voices are coming out of "nontraditional" locales. Mind you, these voices do not receive any significant airplay, but they are there for those looking and listening hard enough to find them.

Toss aside your commercial, cookie-cutter discs. Pick up some Laura Cantrell and be reintroduced to great country music.

BBC DJ John Peel called her first album, Not Tremblin' Kind "my favorite record of the last 10 years and possibly my life." IMHO this second one is every bit as good. Intelligent, understated, nuanced singing. Though a good composer, she is almost unsurpassed as an interpreter. Her Tremulous voice reaches out and inhabits the heart and the mind. Bends the note perfectly to fit the emotion and the word. Yes, like Kitty Wells, but with a little plain-folk Mother Maybelle Carter thrown in. You need this and her first CD -- they are of a whole. This one is slightly better recorded, and is in fact HDCD encoded. If you have an HDCD player (unlikely) the effect is quite startling -- almost like she is there. (But like all HDCD encoded dics, this plays perfectly on all cd and DVD players)

Laura Cantrell's voice has been compared to Kitty Wells and her songwriting has been compared to Dolly Parton. Yes, like Kitty Wells, but with a little plain-folk Mother Maybelle Carter thrown in. You need this and her second CD -- they are of a whole. I like her third, "Hummingbird" too, though it's more pop oriented.

Although Laura Cantrell comes from Nashville, she is as far removed musically from rhinestone cowboys and saccharin strings as she is geographically, based as she is in Brooklyn NY. This is no-frills Americana country music, following in the wake of the Byrds and Emmylou, and is a gem of a record.
Laura modestly includes only four of her own songs on the album, though two of them are the highlights of the album for me, Churches Off The Interstate and Queen Of The Coast (no. 42 in the John Peel 2000 Festive 50), the latter said to be about Bonnie Owens, the yodelling country star who married Merle Haggard and took to the sidelines as his career took off. This album is about the songs, and many were discovered by Laura through her WMFU show Radio Thrift Shop, which she has broadcast from Jersey City NJ since 1993, and from friends and neighbours who are performers. The record has provided a platform for relatively unknown singers and writers, much as Emmylou Harris records have.
Not The Tremblin' Kind was written by George Usher, who had been in the Ministers Of Sound and in an earlier Minneapolis band called Beat Rodeo in the mid-eighties. Another member of Beat Rodeo was Dan Prater, who wrote Do You Ever Think Of Me, and was to play on Laura's next album. Joe Flood, who wrote Pile Of Woe, was in Mumbo Gumbo, while Two Seconds was a cover of Michigan band the Volebeats, and written by their singer Bob McCreedy. Laura's version made no. 27 in the Festive 50 in 2000. The Whiskey Makes You Sweeter comes from a well-regarded album by Amy Allison, daughter of Mose Allison, and Somewhere, Some Night is the work of Carl Montgomery, brother of Melba and Earl "Peanut" Montgomery, and co-writer of Six Days On The Road - a song I'd like to hear Laura Cantrell tackle. The other two songs were written by producer Jay Sherman-Godfrey (from World Famous Blue Jays), one in conjunction with Laura's husband, Jeremy Tepper, who runs Diesel Only Records.
The lack of pretension of Not The Tremblin' Kind lays it open to critical scrutiny as it doesn't hide behind over-glossy production and obfuscating arrangements, but it passes with flying colours thanks to solid performances, top class songs and a sympathetic producer

This album sings itself from the heart of an intersate highway truck stop. Everything about this album (music, lyrics, voice, complexity, thinness) reminds me of a breakfast counter off the highway in Maryland where a chance encounter brought into conversation me, two women, a man with a big rig and a waitress with an unforgiving apron. Three hours and too much coffee later, we had all told our stories--none of them brilliant, none of them hopeless, all of them understandable, all of them human. Then we all went our separate ways, looking for whatever holy, blissful martyr our roads would let us meet. I'd recommend Laura Canterll precisely because she isn't flashy, pushy or phoney. She's just singing the country music I grew up listening to.

Terrific debut from Cantrell who deserves all the success of fellow folkies Krauss, Gillian Welch, etc. Song after song puts a smile on your face. My three favorites are: Not The Tremblin' Kind, Little Bit of you and Two Seconds, although there isn't a bad one in the bunch. Her sophomore disc, When The Roses Bloom Again, is even better!

New York's singing cowgirl, songwriter Cantrell hosts a country show on renowned freeform radio station, WFMU, and has parlayed her love of twangitude into a full-fledged recording career. Honestly, despite having several mutual friends in common with her, this debut disc doesn't do that much for me... The songs are just a little too overwritten and self-consciously crafted, also, her vocals kinda bug me; imperfections that could have been disguised in a rock'n'roll context are all-too apparent in the more stripped-down country context. Still, Cantrell has a lot going for her, not the least of which is a sharp band, culled in part from the East Coast power-pop/indie scene. Folks looking for alt.country that breaks out of the usual ruts of white trash stereotypes, etc., and aims to revitalize the old traditions of well-crafted heart songs might wanna check this gal out.

    The closest I have come to dying was when I was listening to this cd and totaled my car. There aren't many cds I'd rather be listening to than this one when I kick the bucket. It's that good.
    While I enjoy all three of their albums, this one always was my favorite. The vocals are very strong, and some of the songs remind me of early Deftones. But these guys are great examples of nu-metal, and they prove that it was a worth-while genre despite many of it's shortcomings.

    This album is very different from the other two. It's very raw, not commercially accessible like parts of the others were.

    Yeah awesome metal album. Features some great singing by Johnny Santos. He can not only yell but also sings really well melodically. Also features some great drumming by Tommy Decker. Highlights: Intake, Detached, Slipper and while my guitar gently weeps. ALso check out Self Destructive Pattern.

    Spineshank has always been one of my favorite nu-metal/metal bands, beginning with their 1998 debut "Strictly Diesel". While this isn't nearly their best album (that honor would go to the follow up "The Height Of Callousness") and at times the band seems to drift off into strange territory, "Strictly Diesel" offers a nice look at a group that was finding their sound and moving ahead to becoming a premium band in their scene and the heavy music world. If you are a fan of any of Spineshank's material, chances are there is at least something on this cd that is going to garner your interest, although maybe not immediately as say "The Height Of Callousness" or "Self Destructive Pattern" did. All in All "Strictly Diesel" is a nice nostalgic look at when this band was first coming into a nu-metal heavy music scene, and proving they could match up with the genre's best.

    Upon first listen, especially if you are used to Spineshank's newer material, you will notice a big difference in sound. Whereas the second and third albums are a lost faster and melodic, "Strictly Diesel" at times can seem to move kind of slow and not be as focused. The opening track "Intake" is a prime example of this. While it is arguably one of the album's best tracks, it's not at all how you would expect Spineshank to open an album (considering the other two album openers "Asthmatic" and "Violent Mood Swings). Instead of hitting you fast and heavy from the opening note, "Intake" slowly builds from the verse into a moderately paced, somewhat melodic chorus where Jonny Alternates between some screams and clean vocals. This is more or less along the lines which the album takes, so if you like what you hear with "Intake", you're going to be pleased, and if you don't, stay away. The band was obviously capable of making great music as shone by the aforementioned "Intake", "Where We Fall", "Detached", "40 Below" and "Stain". Musically the band isn't nearly as talented as they would become, although Jonny's voice is still in top form. While most of the other tracks are solid as well, these are definitely the stand outs. However the album definitely suffers from a lack of diversity. Some songs sound strangely similar to one another; some just miss the target completely. The electronics, which were later a very important part of Spineshank's sound, are also very sparsely used, and more or less a background element. I can understand this since this was their first effort, but in some places the electronics would have been much better had they been pushed forward.

    In the end "Strictly Diesel" serves its purpose: it gave the band a solid foundation so they were able to jump off into to even heavier and more creative territory on their following two albums. While it's most certainly not the best Spineshank record you can buy, there's much worse out there floating around in the nu-metal/hard rock world. This is a recommended listen for fans of the band, and those who appreciate metal in the vein of Fear Factory. "Strictly Diesel" isn't a classic, or even a standout album, but it's definitely one that deserves a listen. "Starting The Machine", is what this record did.

    This is the best music I have heard since Deftones. This is my second favorite band besides, of course, Deftones. They sound a lot like Deftones but still have a different way of making music. Spineshank is a little more aggresive. These guys mix melody in with the maddness perfectly and dont go over board with either of them. I cant explain in words how good these guys are and when you listen to them I'm sure you'll fell the same. [...] I greatly appretiate your feedback. Man I wish these reveiw things had spell check.

    This record is the debut album from the broken up band spineshank....

    This album is unique in some areas, but not like in an impressive way....


    This cd sounds A LOT different than all theyre other cd's, this wuz before all the electronics they have merged a lot in thier 2 follow up cds..


    Its kinda generic at most, cuz on most songs, tha songs sound alike and some of the gutar riffs and patterns......the lyrics stood out mostly........

    The centerpiece of this live album is "Captain Hook," an 11-minute exercise in psychosis and fuzz guitar, nicely augmented by the spooky, wailing background vocals of percussionist "Deerfrance." At the two minute mark there are some nicely descending minor chords, which resolve into a brief guitar solo somewhat reminiscent of the Hunter-Wagner intro to Lou Reed's "Sweet Jane" on "Rock & Roll Animal." More tortured lead guitar arrives at the four minute mark, followed by Deerfrance, then by Cale declaring "I lost my memory today, the day my ship set sail..." At nine minutes, another distorted guitar solo winds its way into more Deerfrance wailing and the repeated howling refrain "By hook or by crook, I am the Captain of this life..." The song is very moody and slowly builds to its apocalyptic climax. It's a great album, but "Captain Hook" is the terrifyingly essential song here. The next song is the tranquil "Only Time Will Tell," a lilting Velvets-style ballad with lead vocals by Deerfrance, which sets you up for the dissonant arrogance of the title track, and that's followed by the hymn-like weirdness of the album's closer, Chorale." A true gem in the Cale catalog.

    This is one very intense album, partly because of the subject matter (genocide, colonialism, denial, etc.)and partly due to the combination of ferocious and restrained performances. A big part of the power of this album is imagining what it must have been like to hear this music performed live, the thought of which sends shivers down my spine. To me, the album works very well as a cohesive unit (even including the bonus studio tracks); there are some standouts though, like "Baby you know", "Dr. Mudd", "Captain Hook", "Walking the dog", "Chorale", and all of the bonus tracks. All in all, I wouldn't suggest this as a starting point into the ouevre of John Cale, but for those acquainted with some of his work from the 70's, it's a fascinating and visceral experience.

    The sound on this makes you feel like you're right there crammed into CBGBs with John Cale screaming in your ear-- and it's great. "Mercenaries," from its opening about them "being paid just enough to make them wanna KILL for you, but not enough to make them wanna DIE for you," to the screaming climax of its explosive ending, is a buzz-saw of a start for this thing, and it never really lets up. This is high-energy post-punk at its best, and Cale plays the role to the hilt. The last time I saw him, he'd burned out his voice so badly he couldn't perform-- listen to this and you'll see why that might have happened.....

    I know it's rather hard for a John Cale fan to accept the guy dropping his acoustical piano and violin for an electric guitar, and issuing what's most probably the most brutal/ straightforward live album ever- but it would be a crime to ignore that masterpiece, which runs at full voltage all the way down. Captain Hook is probably the best cale performance ever, Mercenaries the best anti-war song ever written, but anyway the whole album is an astonishing experience, provided of course that you do know how to pump up the volume on your stereo amp...

    This ones great. Positively different than anything else i've heard for a long time. And i do listen music a lot. Where does this come from? New York, London, Helsinki, Paris and many far more exotic places. Put this in your stereos and close your eyes, listen and feel all them places and different feelings. Sounds beautiful. By the way, did you know, Hanoi still Rocks here in Finland.

    Entirely seductive, this music pulls you in and surrounds your mind and heart until you are powerless but to succomb to it's beauty. There are so many influences here, but as is the case with the best music they melt into something that transcends the sum of it's parts. Karmen's voice is gorgeouss, Sami (ex Hanoi Rocks!) plays wonderfully and inventively; everything is as alive as the best poetry. This is pulse quickening, heart racing, dreaming and waking to a deeper dream music.

    A rock-heavy twangcore concept album about a sex-drenched country evangelical gal who likes nooky and drugs as much as she likes going down on her knees to praise the Lord. It opens with a foul-mouthed parody of Rick Springfield's "Surrender," and amplifies the theme with numerous songs such as "Misguided Magdalene," "Highway 69," and the menstrual-themed "Ride The Cotton Pony," as well as cover tunes like the Jules Styne showtune, "I Knew Jesus (Before He Was A Star)" that seem to fit into the album's theme. I think they're aiming for a profane, "Rocky Horror"-ish shock value, and for rebellious listeners recently in the thrall of a Christian education, the transgressive mix of religious and sexual themes may provide a great cathartic thrill. However, if you were already paying attention to the punk and Goth rock revolution of the late '70s and early '80s, you'll probably find all of this pretty old-hat: Wayne County or Diamanda Galas approached a lot of the same issues with much greater artistic impact. For those of us not caught up in Catholic or Evangelical theology, it's all one big shoulder shrug. Also: this isn't as "country" as one might hope; Tammy and her boys seem to have been having fun, but it doesn't mean a lot to me. I did enjoy her version of Marshall Chapman's "Don't Make Me Pregnant," the only performance that really stands on it's own, outside of the context of the album.

I LOVE HER !(great guitar playing to boot)

      wow,what a difference hiring a new producer can make!!
      if anyone listened to 'Animal's release before this one '900 lb steam' you would think it's a totally different band
      this CD rocks from start to finish and it's in your face with crisp clear metal sound!
      I really like all the songs but the ones that stand out are 'Morning After' 'Turn And Walk Away','Hellchild','Salt' but most of all the amazing title track 'Violent New Breed'
      this sounds like what W.A.S.P could have been had Blackie not decided to go into concept land
      many of the songs sound similar to W.A.S.P (the singer can definitely sound like Blackie when he wants to) but surprisingly on most of the tunes they sound more like newer Black Sabbath (a good thing)
      this is a great CD for fans of old school metal

      the upside - awesome production,great songs,in your face solos and vocals

      the downside - I wish the songs were a bit more memorable,but that will come,I'm sure

      the bottom line - if these guys stay together,they will be a major force to be reckoned with,this CD rocks with the best of their peers,I highly recommend it...donutman says so!!!

      I'm a big fan of old-school WASP and an avid early-80's metal fan in general, so when ANIMAL put out their first CD (900 lb Steam), I was quick to pick it up. That album was literally one of the worst-produced albums I've ever heard. Ever been to a club watching a show and then walked outside the venue? You know how you can hear the music thru the walls and it just sounds like bass-y mush? That's about what 900 lb Steam sounded like. Horrible.

      I was disappointed, because I would have thought that one of WASP's founding members could put together something much better. Heck, these days, with recording software for a Mac or pc so affordable and easy to use, it's amazing that something could sound this bad.

      In fact, that's how new ANIMAL guitarist/co-writer Chris Laney got into the band. He apparently heard 900 lb Steam, thought it sounded awful, and offered to re-mix the disc for free. Fast forward a few years and Laney is now in the band, co-writing most of the songs, and producing the new disc "Violent New Breed."

      I never would have picked this up had I not heard a few samples of the tunes on myspace. I couldn't believe my ears. The songs were really good and the production is fantastic. These songs sound like a mix of The Last Command and the first WASP album. What's really freaky is lead vocalist Rich Lewis. He sounds EXACTLY like Blackie Lawless.

      This disc is considerably better than any of the recent WASP albums. If there had been an album between WASP's 1st and The Last Command, it would have been Violent New Breed. If you like old-school WASP, this really is a great disc (and even worth a few extra bucks as an import).
