Coming Down

Editorial Reviews
Zero Magazine, June 2000
Santa Cruz has done it again. Last month, Herbert blew the roof off the Zero office and after listening to the new Vincents Ear album, Coming Down, we will never put this office back together.

San Francisco Weekly, April 2000
When Vincents Ear hit the stage I really wasnt sure what to expect. I had heard though the grapevine that these guys coined the phrase, "locomotive soul."

Album Description
Coming Down has elements of classic sounds like Black Sabbath and Led Zepplin mixed with the more current sounds of Fu Manchu and Soundgarden. This combination delivers powerful music with a solid groove! However, this album has a identity all it's own and and is a sound that Vincent's Ear has come to call "Locomotive Soul". Compaire to bands like: Tool, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Kyuss.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Do not attempt to adjust your stereo. World Coming Down is meant to sound slow and dirgey. After all, would songs called "Everyone I Love is Dead" and "Everything Dies" be as effective all punked up? More goth than Black Sabbath and not as goth as Bauhaus, New York's Type O Negative began purveying medieval metal (though not in a Ronnie James Dio sense) with an undercurrent of humor since the early '90s. Led by one-time Playgirl centerfold Peter Steele on bass and vocals, TON enjoyed success with catchy, clever tunes such as the memorable "Black No. 1," a song about hair dye, and the provocative "Christian Woman." Sadly, World Coming Down, the quartet's fifth outing, lacks the pop sensibility and hooks present in some of Type-O's earlier songs. The result is an album that's dense and moody but, with few exceptions, unmemorable. For a good time, don't call on Type O Negative... unless, of course, it's Halloween. --Katherine Turman

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Type O Album.......2007-07-21

This has to be Type O's second best in my book filled with just as many great tracks like on October Rust. Sadly it's not as amazing but it still is none the less a great album. It's probably my second favorite by them right behind October Rust. Again the cd starts off on a joking note with the first track having more meaning once you hear it. The cd is also laced with interesting, sometimes creepy fillers. The best tracks however have to be "Everyone I Love Is Dead", "Creepy Green Light", and "Everything Dies". At least in my opinion they are the best, here's the rest of the album...

2. White Slavery - 8.5/10
4. Everyone I Love Is Dead - 10/10
5. Who Will Save The Sane? - 9/10
7. World Coming Down - 8/10
8. Creepy Green Light - 10/10
9. Everything Dies - 10/10
11. Pyretta Blaze - 9.5/10
12. All Hallows Eve - 10/10
13. Day Tripper - 8/10

Overall : 92% A-

Sadly the only thing wrong with the album is it seems kind of shorter than the others. It's probably due though to the filler placed throughout the cd. Still, an amazing buy by the band. I would recommend October Rust first though as I feel the songs are of a slightly higher quality.

4 out of 5 stars Another dolid Type O Negative album.......2007-03-15

Type O Negative is a band everyone can blindly trust as they'll never let you down with their releases. World Coming Down as another great album in the vein of their 2 previous releases. While one cannot expect any new elements to their music, this album is a very rewarding listen. The songs are somewhat slower than October Rust and obviously less catchy but still quite memorable. The lyrics are once again about love, death and feature a very large amount of sarcasm which is the band's trademark. Not much I can say about this album. Fans of the band should get it as it's a worthy addition to the band's discography.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome gothic metal .......2006-07-17

I'm sick of Evanesance being labeled as gothic metal. They're boring nu-metal, unlike the guys in my review. TON is a real goth metal band. They mix goth metal with doom metal, and it works. Out of all their albums, this one is the most doom influenced. It's also their most depressing. It's Black Sabbath with more depression. The lyrics are painful and full of despair, but not all nu-metal. Peter Steele's vocals can range from angry yells to deep singing, and his basslines are very hearable. The guitarist lays out powerful riffs and some solos as well. He's not as technical as Dragonforce(another great metal band), but he sets the album's mood. The drummer is devastating, as he even lays out some drum solos. The keyboardist keeps the depressing mood in the music, as well as doing some keyboard solos. Standout tracks include Everything Dies and Everyone I Love is Dead. Avoid fake goth like Flyleaf and Shinedown. This is real Gothic Metal. Also check out Carnivore, the thrash metal band he was in.

5 out of 5 stars Yup.......2006-04-14

Good stuff. Alot like Bloody Kisses but alot slower and deeper. If you like O-'s style you'll love this one. Bone appa teet.

5 out of 5 stars not messin' around.......2006-01-09

i just put this album in, so it'll be about 75 min before i can listen to something else, but right now i can't help but relax in a type o negative like stupor as i rock out hard on the inside to the beautiful, cacophonic sounds of peter and kenny giving me a dose of some goth metal emotion

they really do it right with this one, not sounding too produced, but way more coffinesque than any garage band worthy of my attention. boy it'd be sweet to rock this hard in a four piece band with only one guitarist/drummer/keyboardist/bassist--ghoul. i heard they produced it themselves...no egos anywhere, far as i can tell. 75 min ain't enough, i need more!!!!!!

support type o for crying out loud. you will not find anything more satisfying (except physical carnal knowledge--emotionally, this is it, it's like the devil on my shoulder telling me to go all the way). the sad giant has spoken.

first time indulger, long time admirer...

Creator/producer Joel Surnow's hit action-suspense series largely turns on an innovative fusion of real-time plot line delivered by aggressive camera work and multi-frame editing technique. But no small part of the show's intensely propulsive drive -- and much of its dramatic tension and atmospheric textures -- are consistently delivered by the music of young composer Sean Callery, who's won three straight Emmy nominations (winning once) for his contributions to the series. The composer personally selected and annotated the tracks for this anthology of his best work from the show's first three seasons, anchored by a complete version of the show's usually truncated theme. Though it shares similarities with Michael Giacchino's work on Alias, Callery's work here is consistently darker, an electro-organic fusion that spans tense, brooding orchestral passages and thrashing dollops of metallic-edged techno. Yet the composer also delivers moments of melodic, almost mournful solitude, while the third season's story line inspires some evocative Latin influences as well. Callery's background in sound effects editing contributes much to the rich sonic textures here, yielding a pioneering approach that portends a bright future for the composer. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars 24 Soundtrack.......2007-06-02

For fans of Sean Callery's work on 24, this CD is a must have. This soundtrack is also very enjoyable on long drives, and it brings you right into the show.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE 24 MUSIC.......2007-02-11

It was wonderful. As alway Sean Callery's music is outstanding. When you listen to it you can remember the scenes from 24. I would highy recomend it.

3 out of 5 stars I wish..........2006-12-04

Sean Callery wrote incredibly beautiful pieces of music to underline the Tony/Michelle relationship. These are not on the cd. Although there are wonderful pieces of music(my personal favourite is the truly moving "The bomb detonates") I wish it were more complete.

5 out of 5 stars A review from a soundtrack composer groupie.......2006-11-15

As I am writing this review, I have already ordered the "24:Season 4 & 5" soundtrack. (The follow-up to this CD) I was so excited to find out that Sean Callery was producing a second CD for fans of "24".

As the title of this review indicates, I own several soundtracks from various TV series and movies. Out of all of them, I believe this is my favorite. It is no wonder that Sean has won two Emmy's for his work on "24".

One of the great things about this CD is being able to hear the show's theme in it's entirety. The other most noteable tracks for me are "Jack's Revenge At The Docks" and "The Bomb Detonates"....I guess because of the scenes that they accompanied. My other favorites...."Palmer's Theme" (reminds me of "Fanfare For A Common Man") and "Coliseum Finale" (when I listen to this one, I can actually see Mrs. Palmer running through the LA Coliseum....as fast as the beat will take her.)

If you are a fan or "24" or a fan of great music, you NEED to get this CD!!

5 out of 5 stars A excellent score for a excellent TV drama!.......2006-11-12

This score is one of the most emotional and well composed scores there is. The upbeat track really get you excited, while the softer, quieter track really get you into the emotion of the show. This CD is a great addition to any collection. You will not be sorry for buying this CD!

4 out of 5 stars Great, but no prize.......2002-03-31

The selections from the Ring trilogy, Friends in need and Fallen Angel were excellent, however, some of the special request such as joxer the mighty, seemed a little bit rushed. Wasn't that song on Volume 2 already? Where was M'Lila's song from Destiny, or the music played During the first Kiss in "The Quest"
The cd has its good points, personally "It's Over" from "THAB" with its haunting melodies portraying the consequences of war.

5 out of 5 stars Xena;Warrior Princess volume six.......2002-01-09

I am so happy that the last and final cd has come out, now my collection is complete. I am very sad for the show ending, but I am glad to still collect things.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection.......2001-12-25

Well, I have them all by now, but this last one is a great collection, with the added bonus of the music from A Friend In Need.
Just another fine addition to my Xena collection!

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional.......2001-11-30

I am a fanatic and devoted Xenite.I have a huge problem:i can't stop listening to that cd,since the first time i listened to it,which means 1 month! That cd is really exceptional and i think that every true and genuine Xenite should buy it!It's really good!I was moved when i heard the Fallen Angel part.I was passioned when i heard the Ring Trilogy!I was astonishing when i heard the bonus cues that were included, especially the cue from The Quill Is Mightier(fishin part),oh,i was completely satisfied!
Though, there is a complain:i can't understand, why after 6 cd's,the producers don't do a cd including cues like:M'laila's song, the cues from the Bacchaen festival, music from Deja Vou All Over Again, where in the end,Gabrielle says to Xena those wonderful words,or even the scene of the kiss in The Quest! That,i can't understand it!
Last, i believe that whoever likes LoDuca's music style, should buy this cd.
Pay attention to the 22 cue:Pas De Deux Femmes. It is one of a something and whoever remembers what's the scene of this song, will agree with me!Mmmm!

4 out of 5 stars A MIX OF THE BEST, THE WORST AND THE MISSING.......2001-11-29

To all truly Xena fans this CD is a must-have but have some lacks... Fun (comedy episodes music) scores destroy the the great combination of FALLEN ANGEL, THE RHEINGOLD TRILOGY AND I FRIEND IN NEED. In the first selections LoDuca creates spectacular high level music good enough to be played in a Symphony orchestra concert. The others selections have easy-to-fill-space western cowboy music instead of put M'Lilas song of DESTINY, Amazon's climbing trees of ADVENTURES IN THE SIN TRADE and NAJARA vs XENA music that would be gladly accepted by us. I doubt the company will launch a next CD but if they'll do this track and another valuable more must be there and the adittion of some famous characters quotes like "I have many skills" from Xena.

5 out of 5 stars Drop dead gorgeous.......2005-07-04

Every now and then you get a CD come along where some really outstanding artist allows themself to just let their hair down for a moment. Of course it has to be done with aplomb and thorough good taste adding their unique touch of brilliance while sucessfully avoiding any hint of kitch. Russian Early Music pioneer Anatoly Grindenko here records songs from the time of Tsarist Russia. These are songs that transient political regimens would have tried to replace in the popular affection with political songs. Yet somehow these songs have survived in the hearts and affections of the Russian people and this peasant tradition of folk song that refused to die is presented with Grindenko's usual expertise and sung expertly with the utmost affection. In fact the songs were always sung by this choir for their own private fun but excluded from 'serious' concert performances. The quality of singing, as can be expected under Grindenko's expert choral direction, is superb througout. The end result is a lovely CD that can be highly recommended to anybody who just loves to listen to beautiful singing. After all the works of Tchaikovsky, Borodin and Stravinsky draw heavily on Russian folk song as a rich source of thematic material but any serious music lover would enjoy this CD just as much with its range of songs ranging from boisterous to charming to melancholy. Opus 111, as usual, provide expertly engineered sound to match. The end result is a drop dead gorgeous CD that will delight anyone lucky enough to discover this secret gem.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant !.......2001-12-26

This recording is a fantastic example of the russian choral tradition. Wonderful selections sung with obvious passion .The rousing patriotic tunes will make you want to march to the front, the romantic ballads will make you wish you never left and the songs of hearth and homeland will make you inch closer to your loved ones. If you have a passion for things "russian" this one just might keep you occupied for a while.

Amazon.com essential recording

Even before her tragic death at 41 (in 1953), Kathleen Ferrier became a legend for her incomparable voice, her simplicity and sincerity of expression, and her indomitable courage. This compilation of recordings originally made in the 1940s includes four arias from Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice recorded live in Holland, which show why Euridice was one of her signature roles. Two beautifully sung Handel arias, two sacred songs by Maurice Greene, and delightful duets by Purcell and Mendelssohn (sung in English with another beloved English singer, Isobel Baillie) are greatly enhanced by the inimitable pianist Gerald Moore. But the core of this recording is the Mahler cycle. Here, Ferrier's voice takes on a new warmth and intensity; her deeply inward, direct expressiveness gives the bereaved parent's grief and anguish a devastating impact. Her reading of the last song could be a bit more spooky, but the end is heartbreaking in its submissive resignation. The Vienna Philharmonic and Bruno Walter are in their native element. --Edith Eisler

5 out of 5 stars Buen documento para conocer y disfrutar a Kathleen Ferrier.......2004-03-27

5 out of 5 stars The incredible Kathleen Ferrier recordings!.......2003-05-20

Voice fans, rejoice -- EMI has finally remastered these recordings and released them as one CD at budget price!
While Mahler's "Kindertotenlieder" would be the chief reason for purchasing this CD right away, it also contains several morsels, equally fascinating. Purcell and Mendelsohn's duets, Handel's arias, Greene's spirituals, and 3 live arias from Gluck's "Orfeo ed Euridice". In general, particularly Mahler, the sound is nothing short of phenomenal. BUT why could not these engineers do the same for "Orfeo" selections? There's a lot of noise on these. On all the selection Ferrier's exceptionally dark mezzo (or contralto with a huge upper register) shines brilliantly. Of course, Mahler's songs bemoaning the death of children are not an easy listen by any means. But the melodies are amazingly harmonious and Bruno Walter's superb orchestra provides ideal background for them, with Ferrier's voice blending gorgeously with strings. Only Mussorgsky could take a subject such as this and make it so breathtakingly captivating. It's actually frightening in by itself. Gerald Moore (well-known for his collaboration with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau) accompanies expertly on Purcell and Mendelsohn's selections.
It would be a treat to hear Ferrier in more alto repertoire; I am just not sure how many were commercially available at the time. Right now, Vivica Genaux is the leading artist in this area, but it would be fascinating to compare these two.
For the sheer vocal marvel experience, do not delay in getting this CD.

5 out of 5 stars A Terrible Beauty.......2002-11-14

Nothing will change my opinion that Mahler should be approached with caution. Like Wagner, the scale and power of his work means that it is simply not for everyone, but inspite of that, this recording is an indespensible part of any serious music lover's collection. Music like this simply is not made any more, but rather this is a glimpse into a past where artists and not accountants ran the music industry.

Mahler's wife Alma bitterly opposed his setting of Ruckert's Kindertotenlieder to music and considering the death of their daughter soon after, it's doubtful if she ever forgave him for it. But the finished work has an indescribable beauty that Kathleen Ferrier and Mahler's protégé Bruno Walter give full expression to in away that no other interpreter's have even approached. More than 50 years on this is both a lasting tribute to the artists involved and an indictment of the decline in standards since.

5 out of 5 stars What is to say - It's Ferrier..........2002-03-31

I bought the CD for the Kindertotenlieder and that's what I am going to write about (though the rest of the program is equally impressive). Ferrier's Mahler interpretations are always in the 5+ star area. When Walter is accompanying her the results are even better (unlike the case of Klemperer). The first song - Nun Will Die Sonn'... the darkness of the music is so prominent, it's breathtaking. All the rest Kindertotenlieder come in the same fashion. If interested in a release with better sound but not these Olympian contritutors, Janet Baker and Christa Ludwig have made some very good discs

5 out of 5 stars How can you go wrong?.......2001-10-22

I said it before, in my review of the Ferrier/Walter performance of Das Lied von der Erde, recently rereleased by Decca; Ferrier is the authoritative interpreter of Mahler songs--and I have never heard anything to equal this performance of Kindertotenlieder.

Kudos to Jimerson for bringing to public attention Lincoln's passion for fine music. The songs on this recording are beautifully rendered and appear to have been carefully prepared with respect to original instrumentation. As a footnote to amazon.com, the correct title of the first song is "Barbara Allen."

      Album Description

Ostroushko first wrote and performed this outstanding cycle of instrumental music for recent broadcast on A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION and the response from the listening audience was unprecedented. Here it is recreated in all of its glory by Peter and the talented Prairie Home Shoe Band. Highlights include "Trip to Donegal" and his beautiful tribute. "Hymn: Page 9/11."

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Folk songs for our times.......2003-05-27

I have many of Peter's recordings and have enjoyed those immensely, but this CD is Peter at his best. These songs are all written by Peter and all within the same time period. He challenged himself to write 10 songs for Prairie Home Companion in the month of March 2002. My favorite here is Teelin Bay Waltz. What a beautiful melody. I also like East Texas Waltz. In fact all the melodies on this cd will stick in your head. This is a refreshing new recording. One of this year's best. Each time I play it I like it even more.

4 out of 5 stars A diverse new album by a newgrass fiddling whiz.......2003-03-12

Plenty of fine and fancy fiddling and picking from this veteran '70s newgrasser. Stylistically, this ranges all over the map, from relatively straightforward bluegrass to old-timey, Antebellum-flavored Celtic aires, and softer "new acoustic" style crossovers, all with solid musicianship. I prefer hearing Ostroushko stick to more old-fashioned material, which he excels at, but folks who've been introduced to his work via his appearances on "Prairie Home Companion" will probably enjoy this album in its entirety.
