1000 Hurts (Ltd)

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Shellac is back for another aural attack with 1000 Hurts, a more accessible album than previous fare such as At Action Park. Frontman Steve Albini has never sounded looser or more sarcastic than he does on the one-two opening punch of "Prayer to God" and "Squirrel Song"; the former finds the screechy one singing (!) wails of resignation over a punchy backing, while the latter has him sneering "Don't be surprised if I bust out crying" before indulging in some wicked aggro-arena stylings. Cage-rattling aces Todd Trainer and Bob Weston are given gonzo airlift by the big-room sound Albini loves to champion--it's helium light and lead heavy at the same time. The shorter tracks, such as "Canaveral" and "QRJ," allow for easy-in, easy-out rock fiestas, while longer cuts such as "Watch Song" give the rhythm section a workout. Another fine effort from Albini and company. --Jason Josephes --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

3 out of 5 stars Weak for their standards, strong for ours.......2007-02-28

Some of their weaker material present here with Albini at his most lyrically jaded and the band generally rumbling along with a dislocated punch. Muted and predictable, the group's once hard-hitting, influential sound had mostly run it's limited range, usually exacerbating their fuzzed out distortion to hide the relatively clean produced and semi-safe sound. Sometimes though, their budding pop personas shine through the cynically detached studio vets mechanical pace, offering a pleasant enough diversion from the sludgy repetition. Thankfully there is enough here done right to justify a purchase from fans, but a lousy and lazy starting point for anyone looking at checking out Shellac. As cruddy as some of it may sound though, (thankfully picking up a bit in the 2nd half) it is still heads and tails above so many newer, "edgier", indie rock acts, simply due to an inherent competence from Albini and company to take any mildly developed musical riff and transform it into a sloppily hypnotic mess, complete with ultra-cynical rants.

5 out of 5 stars Steve Albini is god.......2006-07-20

To the pr*ck who gave this one star, i suggest you go f*ck yourself and never review anything again. everything steve albini has released(when it's one of his bands, not one that he produced, though most of his recording work has been for good bands, with a few exceptions(bush)) is perfect. the one true punk musician that still exists.

4 out of 5 stars 6 years and still rocks.......2006-07-17

Everyone's got an opinion. Most people either fall on the side of loving Shellac or hating them because of Albini. Todd Trainer turns in a great series of tracks that really challenge you to listen to what he is doing. Weston is weston and there is very little room for him to shine. But that is what Albini's mastery is - a perfectly balanced album that gives equal weight amongst the band. If you have never picked up any Shellac, I would suggest starting at the beginning and working your way up to 1000 hurts as a means to gain an understanding of how the band has progressed over time.

4 out of 5 stars No the best, but damn close too it........2005-09-27

One of the reviews on this list here gives this album one star? Do you like Steve Albini at all? Why did you bother to review it? Have you heard at Action park? Have you heard Terraform? Ever hear of Big Black? What is the point of challenging everyone else's taste and credibility? This album is excellent, a bit different from Shellac's other releases, but that's the point, different emotions, and feelings go into the production of each album, Steve Albini is one of the only people in music today who makes good choices. Go buy this Record (not CD).

5 out of 5 stars this isn't some kind of metaphor..........2005-08-10

this is entirely in response to the hack review a few (two) down:
This may come as a surprise to a few persons who listen to "underground" music, but some of us listen to music period without the concern for any sort of "indie cred" and, gasp, some of us even listen to music (even Steve Albini's music) and don't even read the reviews on pitchfork! This is definitely, without question, a GOOD, heartfelt (expletive) rock alblum if there exists one. Fear not to buy this record (and if you have a decent record shop nearby, and a turntable, prithee forego the amazon and buy it on vinyl--it comes with the cd anyway), imbibe the pure rock sound and fury, and thank yourself later.
