Amazon.com essential recording

Nine Inch Nails are a pretty amazing phenomenon when one considers what they--um, he--have done with just a few studio recordings. The Downward Spiral, NIN's second full-length album, is just as packed with vitriol as Pretty Hate Machine and the EP Broken--and has just as solid a base of pop hooks that go a long way toward explaining NIN's popularity. Most recognizable is the down-tempo single "Closer," which remains a staple of dance clubs everywhere. But for the most part, the album is all heavy beats and aggressive guitars--industrial music with a pop angle. That winning combination is what makes Trent Reznor a law unto himself, becoming insanely popular while the main body of industrial music retains its subculture status. --Genevieve Williams

Amazon.com

It's easy to understand why Nine Inch Nails became the industrial band to break out of the techno ghetto and win a larger audience. Trent Reznor, who records the NIN albums almost entirely by himself (although he tours with a full band), tries very hard to pass himself off as an angry young man, but underneath the angst-ridden lyrics, pounding synths, and grating guitars is an irrepressible pop sensibility. On the second full-length NIN album, The Downward Spiral, Reznor builds his constructions of noise and gloom around warm, fuzzy melodies. On the album's first single, "March of the Pigs," for example, Reznor screams about swine lined up for slaughter amid guitars screeching in pain. Suddenly the guitars fall away to reveal the sensually throbbing rhythm track below; then that falls away to reveal a vocal-and-piano track that's as catchy as anything by Elton John. Because Reznor has a better handle on dynamics now, the melodic core is more obvious than ever. --Geoffrey Himes

4 out of 5 stars Alot of Darkness--and Some Fun.......2007-07-15

The first time I listened to "The Downward Spiral", I was a bit sickened by the opening gun shots, realizing that Reznor was making a not-too-subtle reference to the so-called Tate murders, where the three male victims were shot, among other things. Time having blunted that effect, I've grown to appreciate not only his utilization of those disgusting crimes as a potent metaphor for his own perceived disintegration (note "Piggy" and the cacophonous "March of the Pigs"), but I've come to the conclusion that, while this work is a bit dark (and noisy) for my tastes, it's nevertheless quite an accomplishment. Unlike "Year Zero", it's never dull. Every song oozes with emotion, be it anger, contempt, desperation--whatever. Lyrically, it runs the gamut between good enough and wow, I wish I'd thought of that. It's technically brilliant--I can't conceive of how the electronic effects could have been rendered any more intriguing. It's obviously a labor of love, meticulously constructed by an obsessive (and perhaps perverted) mind. For all it's stellar qualities, "The Downward Spiral" is, alas, not for every mood, i.e., it has the unique ability to twist an already bad mood into an even worse one--at least that's my experience. Plenty of sunshine and a car ride is the way I take it best. Maybe that will work for you.

5 out of 5 stars Absolute must for NIN fans.......2007-06-27

If you're a fan of NIN and don't own this album, then you should really reconsider calling yourself a fan. This is a classic industrial album and one of their finest works ever.

5 out of 5 stars Not for the faint of heart........2007-06-07

TDS was Reznor's darkest and from what I think his best piece of work in his entire career (and also his most disturbing). If you are trying to get into Nine Inch Nails, I would recommend either With Teeth, Year Zero, or The Fragile, as they are cd's that are less dark than this. However, if you are into NIN, you should DEFINITELY pick up this cd.

My favorite songs: Mr. Self Destruct, Heresy, Closer, March of the Pigs, Ruiner, Eraser, Reptile, A Warm Place, and finally Hurt.

4 out of 5 stars NIN at it's almost best.......2007-05-16

Good work from Trent, but in my book many of the songs on this CD that are performed on the Beside You in Time Blu-ray are a better performance then the originals

5 out of 5 stars downward spiral. excellent........2007-05-07

This is a must own for all nin fans. it is a masterpiece. arguably the best album put out by nin. even if you arent a nin fan, i would still recomend it strongly.

2 out of 5 stars I must be missing something here, Trent's "Pretty Hate Machine" is far better than this noisy junk.......2007-07-12

I don't understand what makes this album referred to as a "masterpiece". I guess, compared to other albums of that time, when we're stuck "clutching at straws" to find a landmark album, this album just happened to arrive when radio had mostly just regrettable crap. Jeez, the nineties sucked! I will say though, that I would rather refer to "Pretty Hate Machine" as a masterpiece album for Nine Inch Nails. "Broken" (and "Fixed") are both easily forgettable.

On this album, I like "Mr. Self Destruct". It's an easy song to get stuck in your head, plus the EP of "Further Down the Spiral" has a couple of good remixes of that song.

"Piggy. Pig, pig, pig..." "Nothing can stop me now." What does that mean? Is Trent into bopping animals or something? The song doesn't seem to make any sense that I can figure out.

"Heresy" is a song I could do without. I'm not the most religious guy out there. However I do believe in God. But I don't practice any religion. Since there are so many different interpretations of what God is, how can anyone see the authenticity of any one religion?

"March of the Pigs" mentions pigs again. Again, what's the reference here?

"Closer" is my favorite track here. However, I hope Trent's not talking about his warped love for pigs.

The rest of this album just seems to mix up hard noise and then depressing melancholy moods backed up by strange instrumental passages. Most of the instrumentation on this album is strange. He doesn't play many ordinary instruments, and his more electronic sounds are obscure to me, and I usually enjoy variations of IDM and industrial instrumentals.

I bought this album when it came out back in 1994. I hated it back then and gave it away. I decided to buy it again to see if I've missed something. But no, it's the same album I was uncomfortable with as before. I like "Further Down the Spiral" better than this album. If "Further Down the Spiral" had "Closer" on it, that would be a fantastic album. So, I guess I'll just keep both.

5 out of 5 stars Big time!.......2007-06-23

I love this album. I am so happy that trent remastered this album and included a couple videos as well. The music sounds verry fresh and doesn't drop in sound when I play the new master in my zune. If you love this album, than you should get it in it's digitally remastered format...the first edition sounds too low.

5 out of 5 stars The best album ever!.......2007-06-21

his is the best album ever made IMO. I love it so much, that it never gets old, never gets boaring, and always sounds fresh and original. Anybody who writes less than a five star rating is either deaf, umb, or dead. Not in a cool undead way either...just old and dead.

5 out of 5 stars Worth it for the videos.......2007-05-13

If this will be your first time buying The Downward Spiral, I would recommend buying this Dual Disc edition. It includes videos for "Closer" and "March of the Pigs." The videos are of pretty good quality. I would guess they are near or matching DVD quality, but I'm not sure of the resolution. The option to listen to the album mixed in 5.1 is also great. Since the disc also plays in standard CD players for a stereo mix of the tracks, you can use it just like a regular CD if you want. If you're buying this just for the surround sound, I'd recommend getting the Deluxe Edition of the album, which is a SACD and includes an album of b-sides, most of which are mixes collected for the singles that accompanied the release of TDS. Or, if you're like me and just have to have ever NIN release there is, this is a great addition to the collection because you get the videos.

5 out of 5 stars DVD-Audio Bliss .......2007-05-08

All fans of 'The Downward Spiral' must hear this in 5.1 DVD-Audio. Some of the songs are concentrated across the front three channels with the rears serving as ambients. Other songs explode from all five speakers and swirl around the room like whirling dervishes. The clarity and detail is astonishing. I've compared this to a friend's SACD version and there is no contest. The DVD-A wins on all fronts: frequency range, bass response, and seperation. There is a general feel of space and depth on the DVD-A that is truly remarkable.

I was lucky enough to catch NIN on their 'Spiral' tour, and this High-Resolution version of the album is the closest I've heard to Reznor's enveloping concert experience, yet with the care and precision of an expertly crafted studio album.

If you don't have a DVD-Audio set-up, here is the perfect excuse to take the plunge. Don't delay, get it today.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The most important album yet made........2007-07-04

No other artist from the 1990's took it's fanbase into further exploits and deeply passionate industrial soundscape than NIN. Trent Reznor, creator, vaocalist, and essential figure of NIN is primarily responsible for this five star work of timeless art. Now, years later, the digitally remastered version along with added bonuses is available in full surround sound. Nothing new or remixed, just the same great album made louder for your zune or ipod thingy. Buy this!!! It's the best album ever made!

3 out of 5 stars Not a masterpiece, and Reznor himself has outgrown it........2007-04-16

Seems like a good time to re-evaluate NIN's 1994 breakthrough The Downward Spiral. It's been reissued with digital remastering and a bonus disc of remixes, and Trent Reznor has a new and very different album coming out. And with time, it's become easier to separate the musical accomplishments of The Downward Spiral from the dark, emotional subject matter and the cultural impact it had in its time.

On the plus side, the music on The Downward Spiral is more varied than anyone ever gave Reznor credit for. Everybody copied the loud angry parts (Rammstein stole the riff for "Du Hast" right from the end of "Eraser"), but Reznor could also occasionally pause and reflect, as in the ambient instrumental "A Warm Place," and he also put all kinds of sudden changes and about-faces even into the heavy songs. The loud/soft dynamic gets abused a lot in this album, starting with the opening track, where the loud guitars abruptly give way to an extremely quiet interlude after the second chorus. But occasionally there's a bit more subtlety than that. In "The Becoming" for instance, an angry chorus suddenly turns into a rhythm on an acoustic guitar with multi-tracked chanting in the background, and then Reznor's voice comes back in and quickly gets distorted even more than before.

Occasionally, Reznor dipped into other electronic styles. "Piggy" could pass for a song by Tricky, with a vaguely jazzy rhythm produced to sound claustrophobic and dangerous. "Closer" is built on a tight house beat, and "Heresy" is KMFDM-style techno, with sound effects similar to those in "Lust" and guitars like in "Juke Joint Jezebel," and a screaming chorus not unlike what Sascha K always does. "The Downward Spiral" is a queasily off-key near-instrumental with all kind of spooky noises mixed into the ambience, much like what Aphex Twin did on occasion. The production doesn't sound dated at all. Musically, this album is a great improvement over Pretty Hate Machine.

Nonetheless, all these examples are exceptions to the rule, and do not really represent the vast majority of the album, which is more than one hour long. In the second half, the music begins to sound flat. The beats are loud and aggressive, and yet somewhat awkward. Except for "Heresy" and "Closer," these songs don't have the sense of propulsive energy and motion that one finds in really good electronic music (even in industrial music, like KMFDM's "Naive"). After "Closer," a lot of The Downward Spiral consists of grinding, hook-less sludge. Even Reznor's vocals, which are arranged into catchy rhythms in the first half, become more formless in the second half. The rhythms slacken, and it often feels like he's just screaming irregularly over a loud but senseless pile of noise. Maybe each individual song isn't bad, but it's a bit tiresome to listen to the whole album from beginning to end.

The other big drawback of the album is that, even though the music can be detailed and sophisticated, Reznor's vocal delivery has no subtlety whatsoever. He has only two settings -- almost inaudible whispering, and unhinged screaming -- and he goes back and forth between them over and over with very little variation. This really takes a lot out of the shifts in the music, and it often prevents the lyrics from making any impression whatsoever. The worst offender is probably "I Do Not Want This." First Trent screams, "Don't you tell me how I feel!" The louder he screams this line, the more it sounds like a seventh-grader's temper tantrum. Furthermore, the "I want to know everything / I want to be everywhere" bit at the end of that same song could only have an emotional impact if it were made to sound desperate and longing. But Reznor just screams these lines, making them sound petulant and boring.

Similarly, the chorus in "Heresy" might have been impressive if he had delivered it with a confident, En-Esch-like swagger (like in "Die Now, Live Later"), but instead he screams it yet again. Upon hearing it, one can't help but notice what an easy target Reznor chose. Even in 1994, there was nothing controversial about "Heresy." It was certain to offend the usual people and invite some finger-wagging from the usual talking heads, but Reznor was never in any danger of becoming a pariah or losing his record contract over this song. On the contrary, there's even something safe about the way this album depicts only personal emotions, which may be directed at some abstract entity but never at any specific event. In that sense, his latest album Year Zero takes more risks.

Reznor does a better job on "Hurt," but even at his most vulnerable he's lacking in dramatic restraint. Johnny Cash got more out of this song by emoting less. And Reznor himself became a much better singer later on. On Year Zero, his vocal performances are far superior to what he displays on The Downward Spiral. These days he sounds much more confident, relies much less on screaming, and writes about something other than his own emotions. In some sense, The Downward Spiral finds him at his weakest. His angry snarling was effective on Pretty Hate Machine, because he was singing from the point of view of a disillusioned, but fairly ordinary young man who has to go to work every day and wants to make out with pretty girls. But on this album, he's attempting to recast himself as a suffering poet and artist rather than as an ordinary man, and it's really not all that convincing. Even though this kind of narcissism appeals to angry teenagers.

So, there you have it. This was a creative and even unconventional album when it came out. However, it has severe limitations, mostly thematic rather than musical. Reznor himself doesn't make music like this anymore, and it's probably for the better.

5 out of 5 stars Down The Spiral Forever (Let's Clear A Few Things Up).......2007-04-04

If I could give this album 7 stars I would. The Downward Spiral is the best album of 1994 and definitely top ten of the 90s. The album which charts the journey of a man's sanity and insanity came out during a time in music when every genre was mostly fragmented and this work of art helped meld elements like post-industrial techno beats and hard and noise rock. I just want to clear something up a reviewer said about one of the tracks about this album. The reviewer said something in reference to "big man with a gun" with its "anti-gun toting lyrics" The song is actually a satire about rap music that Reznor wrote in the midst of gangsta rap which was huge in 1994. The song is all about the state of hip-hop then and even now. That being said, I'll continue with my synopsis of this album.
The best place to listen to the album is on your headphones connected to a home stereo during an electrical storm.

5 out of 5 stars I own the DualDisc and the SACD, which one is better?.......2006-12-08

Well I'll get straight to the point. The SACD version of the album is noticeably better than the 24/48 mix on the DualDisc's DVD-Audio portion.
I will say that whether you're listening to the Dolby Digital 5.1, the 24/48 5.1 or the SACD 5.1, you're in for a treat. Trent Reznor and James Brown have really done an amazing job with this surround mix. The last minute of closer where a razor sounding blast comes 360 degress around your head will just make you smile.
If you're listening with your eyes closed you'll swear the room is moving around you.

The best news that I was so pleased to discover is that the second disc is SACD stereo! I never knew this before. Getting all the great remixes as well as such sweet tracks as Joy Division's Memorabilia and Dead Souls and NIN's Burn in SACD stereo is worth the price alone.

Great disc, looking forward to The Fragile - I hope it receives the same treatment as this disc did.

Please Trent get Pretty Hate Machine back and give us a Deluxe SACD edition as well. It's too good to miss.

5 out of 5 stars I speak religion's message clear ... and I control you!.......2006-10-28

What can I say about one of the best cds ever released that hasn't already been said? Being Nine Inch Nail's most popular album (due in part to the popularity of the track entitled "closer") I can only say that if you have not experienced this album, and are reading reviews for some insight then stop here and go ahead and buy this cd. If you are new to NIN, then be sure to give it several listens. Reznor's music is somewhat complex and can overwhelm someone not used his music. Give it some time, and you will begin to hear the multi-layered depth and rhythms and I promise you will be hooked. This album is a fast-paced nihilistic slam against the senses that will leave you begging for more. In addition to the music, the lyrics are bold and daringly controversial (the track "Heresy" comes to mind with lyrics like "God is dead, and no one cares, If there is a hell, I'll see you there") As a fan who loves all of Reznor's releases I would recommend anyone new to Nine Inch Nails to start with this release. While his earlier and later releases include elements that are every bit as good as the music you will find here, there is something about this album that is special and makes it stand out among the rest.

Also, as a side note about this release, the second cd makes the extra expense worth it. Not only has the music been remastered, but there is a 13 track cd available only on this release that includes rare tracks, demos, and other songs previously only available on movie soundtracks. I sold my original cd and bought this release, and have no regreats. This is the definitly the version to buy.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album, But Don't Buy This.......2004-12-06

This is a great album that's easily one of the best ever, but there's no reason to buy this Japanese import. For one thing you could just buy the Crow soundtrack for Dead Souls, but now it's available on an official NIN release besides this one, the Deluxe Edition of the Downward Spiral. I give it 5 stars for the music, but this definitely isn't worth your money even if you're a huge fan of Nine Inch Nails.

5 out of 5 stars Buy THE CROW.......2004-07-16

Here's the deal: DEAD SOULS is amazing. But so is everything else on THE CROW SOUNDTRACK. AND you get to hear edgy stuff from bands you most likely wouldn't hear otherwise. A great way to be introduced to Machines Of Loving Grace (then go pick up "Concentration") and For Love Not Lisa. DOWNWARD SPIRAL is a brilliant album. Buy the original format and shell out the extra for THE CROW. While you're at it, check out the Trent-produced NATURAL BORN KILLERS soundtrack. "Burn" is a must for any fan.

3 out of 5 stars Don't listen to A music fan from Tampa, FL United States.......2002-12-17

A have nothing against A music fan from Tampa, FL United States, but you have to get the right soundtrack in your review. Dead Souls was covered for the original Crow soundtrack, not Lost Highway. You should get every soundtrack that Trent does work on, by the way!

Whether or not the story and the theme throughout this disc are true to written form (and not interpretational form), the extra track throws the feel of the disc off. Whoever "threw" this track on this disc should be hurt. I guess that there is a convenience factor about having your favorites all on one disc, but if you love NIN, you won't let the fact that they don't have the Xtra track on the orignial pressing get you down. Leave the rest of the tracks to do that! :) One kick ass album, though.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Japanese pressing on downward spiral.......2002-05-05

I bought this disc as it was what I was looking for since it also had the cover of Joy Division's Dead Souls. This album is one of my favorites the reason your paying X amount for the Japanese import is because the Japanese use different pressing technique to the Americans so you get a better sound quality. Normally if there is a bonus tracks its put at the end beats me why dead souls is track 10 but then again thats what the program button on your Cd player is for so you CAN put the song at the end if you so desire. If you decide you WANT to buy this I'd hurry cause it may go up in price in the near future. This is a disc you can chill out to cause its that good!!!!!!

          4 out of 5 stars i like it.......2001-11-19

If you haven't heard "dead souls" just know it's one of the better songs on the c.d. Is it worth the price? It depends, if you're collecting the halos and different versions I'd recommend it definetly but if you just like nin you might be happier getting the us version and if you like "dead souls" that much just buy the lost highway soundtrack like everyone recommends. I thought it was worth the price though.
