October
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Long a favorite of U2's original core following, October not only avoids the sophomore slump, but adds an edgy, emotional resonance to the buoyant self-confidence they showed on their debut, Boy. Though producer Steve Lillywhite deserves mention for helping effectively frame the material with production that manages to be both stark and atmospherically murky, this is the music where Bono, Edge, and company first show the potential that would make them superstars. Lacking the sometimes ham-fisted polemics that would mar War, The Joshua Tree, and later works, October has an oft-tortured sense of emotional and philosophical ambivalence that only underscores concerns that range from the crypto-spiritualist yearnings of "Gloria" and "Rejoice" to more anxious moments like "I Fall Down," "I Threw a Brick Through a Window," and "Fire." In retrospect, they may have peaked early. --Jerry McCulley --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Texas quintet Blue October has bounced from Houston-based indie darlings to the majors and back twice since their '98 bow. Yet there's little sense they've compromised much of their eclectic, creatively restless ethos in the bargain on this, their fourth studio album (and second major label stint). In the hands of less ambitious musicians, the personally harrowing, perfectly crafted "Hate Me" would have become template for the entire collection; here it's but the most commercially focused of band leader Justin Furstenfeld's eclectic musical obsessions. His taste for early '80s UK New Wave evinces itself in a fondness for lyrical shadows and fleeting sonic echoes of Richard Butler's P-Furs and Peter Gabriel. But it's in the collection's quieter, more reflective songs ("Let It Go" and "Congratulations" turn on Ryan Delahousaye's signature violin phrases; "X Amount of Words" effortlessly morphs through several intriguing techno conceits; "18th Floor Balcony" bristles with an almost neo-classical elegance) where Blue October sets itself a cut above its post-grunge contenders. -- Jerry McCulley
Album Description
The Texan rockers build on their guitar and violin-driven sound, setting their pained-yet-hopeful lyrics to moody-yet-catchy tunes with touches of electronica and piano-laced balladry. Includes the hits "Hate Me" and "Into the Ocean," plus "Drilled a Wire Through My Cheek," "Congratulations" (with Imogen Heap), and more.

Curses, Foiled Again.......2007-06-16
Linda Ruelas, the weekend receptionist at the office where I work, was listening to this song. I had heard it on the radio, and wondered who sang it. She has a boyfriend stationed in Iraq, and she found out his MySpace password, and read email he wrote to his buddy that said something like, "you know how I roll," which seems to imply that he was not trying to maintain the monogomous lifestyle while stationed in Iraq. Or some such drama that made this song resonate with her.
And it goes something like this:
"I have to block out thoughts of you, so i don't lose my head
They crawl in like a cockroach leaving babies in my bed
Dropping little reels of tape to remind me that I'm alone
Playing movies in my head that make a porno feel like home
There's a burning in my pride, a nervous bleeding in my brain
An ounce of peace is all I want for you, Will you never call again?
And will you never say that you love me just to put it in my face
And will you never try to reach me, it is I that wanted space"
And then that catchy catchy chorus:
"Hate me today
Hate me tomorrow
Hate me for all the things I didn't do for you
Hate me in ways, yeah ways hard to swallow
Hate me so you can finally see whats good for you"
Anyway, Blue October is from Texas, but you wouldn't know it from their sound. The only thing like Texas about them is that they have a very big sound. It is more alternative rock than anything, but I guess it is not all blues, or country, or Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys.
Awesome CD! .......2007-06-10
I was totally blown away by this CD. I had just bought it for Hate Me and Into the Ocean, only to find out that the other songs are even better. The CD plays as a story of Justin (the lead singer). If you listen to the lyrics you will be amazed at his talent and his life struggles. Oh, and it rocks too! Number 4, 7 and 10 are the best.
Once Upon a Theme.......2007-06-08
A better title for this CD would have been a "Fine Madness", except it's already been taken. The airplay of Hate Me and Into the Ocean do not do justice to Foiled. It's an album meant to be played in one sitting, front to rear, as in FM radio's heyday.
Foiled is a finely crafted work:the haunting violin on 18th Floor Balcony, the hypnotic guitar work and vocals on She's My Ride Home, the three part vocal on Into the Ocean and it goes on. There is a theme running through the album that belies the eclectic label. Although the hard edge of Drill it, Hate Me and What if We Could are miles from Congratulations' pop chorus and Overweight's unique structure, each song develops the theme of love and madness, cause and effect, bringing the listner to the edge: sometimes granting friendship, sometimes decrying its loss, but redeeming love at the end (the point in 18th Floor Balcony being the last track).
Wonderfully done.
AMAZING CD... Now I'm getting all their CD's.......2007-06-02
All I can say is WOW! The variety of the songs just blows me away... there seems to be a song I can listen to no matter what mood I'm in! The music is not cliche and very unique... they have their own sound and are not generic in any way. LOVE IT! I just ordered their other CD's b/c this one is so great! I'm definitely a big fan now.
More than satisfied.......2007-05-31
I Love this CD. I took a chance buying it only knowing one song. But it totally paid off because i listen to it constantly and am loving every minute of it.

Justin is pure music genius. An artist. And his band brings it all together perfectly.

HISTORY FOR SALE - BUY IT !.......2007-05-29
This album, 'History For Sale', is exactly that, one man's very personal thoughts, experiences and life details (history), written down, set to music, recorded in a studio, put on a CD, and presented for sale to anyone who wants to buy it.
The very personal nature of the lyrics on this album is the kind of stuff a normal person would write only in their private journal and keep to themselves for reflection. Consequently, at times listening to this album does give you the privileged but uneasy feeling that you would get when being made privy to the details of someone's personal life. Nevertheless, Justin is an artist that is willing to make us privy to his 'history', however uncomfortable, painful or personal it may be. Which results in what any great artist in any medium ultimately aspires to achieve; to bring out of oneself something unique, beautiful and meaningful from a personal place which touches others in a profound way. Now, while this material tends to be a bit on the melancholy side you must recognize it for what it is; candid artistic expression, this stuff is NOT contrived. And while the lyrics can be melancholy, they can at the same time be very uplifting. If you've ever seen Blue October perform live you know without question that Justin's music comes from his very heart and soul. Justin's performance and the music is so emotional and powerful that the audience is at times actually moved to tears, and I'm not talking about teenage girls. It is also plain and very nice to see that not just Justin but all of Blue October are very passionate about their music. There really is no other band in America like Blue October, they are an important band, and one we should consider a very welcome alternative to the vast sea of insignificant bands deemed as acceptable listening by the mainstream powers that be. Finally, while lyrically this album may be somewhat avant-garde it is also very accessible and in the end very enjoyable to listen to. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT pass this one by.
Some good, some bad.......2007-05-28
There are some really good songs on this cd ("calling you" is my favorite), but other songs aren't that great. if you're a fan of blue october, it would be good to add to your collection, but if you like just a few of their songs, it would be better to buy them individualy online.
Great addition to any lyrical collection.......2007-03-17
Honestly. If you are looking for a album that captures the ups and downs of any real love filled relationship. This is your remedy. Plus did I mention that Justin has put together some very catchy rythems, and a musical master piece. This album isn't for the shallow type. But with songs like Calling You, and Inner Glow really capture some good feelings in life. And then you have songs like Chameleon Biy and Amazing that dictate imperfections of any person with a dysfuntional social life. All in all. A album you won't ever forget. No matter what parts of it you take from it. There is something here for everyone.

I should have bought two...........2007-06-17
This is my favorite album from Blue October. I love the music and with the exception of the first track....I love every song! I have this CD in my Car and am playing the heck out of it...I just wish that I had bought a second one for my CD player at Work. Edgy,Angry,Catchy..you name it this CD has it....I love this Band.
Blue October is an amazing group.......2007-05-30
I own all three of their albums and every one is absolutely amazing. Everything about them is awesome.
Just love it!.......2007-05-29
So I fell in love with Blue October when my roommate would try to use it as an alarm. I enjoyed their new c.d. so much I decided I needed to try to collect all the previous c.d.'s as well. One song in particular on Consent to Treatment--Balance Beam--really stood out to me as a similar sound to their newer songs. This c.d. is a solid mix of their older sound and an excellent stand point to see how well this band has developed and evolved until now.
Good addition to your Blue October Collection But................2007-05-16
I would have given this album a 3 when compared to there others. But I tried not to. But if you are going to only get one or two. Get "Foiled" and "History for Sale".
But this album has some really good content in it. It has alot of "Loner" feel to it. Break-up songs. Make-up songs. This album has alot to it. Hard, soft, and just feel good music. The bad and good in life is all here. But it just is not very well put together. Some songs seem like filler songs to what could have been a 5 star rating.
With songs like "Independently Happy" portraying an medicine for a socially troubled, lonely person. And depressing attidudes found in "Schizophrenia". Many feelings in this album are great. Wheather good or bad. One doesn't exist with the other right?
Great music here.
Consent for Treatment - Blue October.......2007-01-09
Excellent album. These guys just keep getting better and better with their follow up albums. This is the best new band I have heard in a long time. Thanks for offering this product. It was a good price for a great product.

The Hunt for Red October and Crimson Tide mark the swan songs of a long-standing genre: the cold-war-theme action thriller (and its subgenre, the nuclear-submarine-threat potboiler). Given the music here, composer Basil Poledouris must have sensed the end was nigh, for he pulls no punches. Poledouris (who seemingly wrote the score to Red Dawn as a warm-up exercise) has created a full-bodied orchestral swashbuckler with a male chorus (singing in Russian, of course) to boot; a modern take on the Erich Korngold/Errol Flynn film sensibility that ably demonstrates there's still life in those traditions. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Music .......2007-03-05
I bought the Hunt for Red October Soundtrack mostly just for the first track: "Hymn to the Red October". This track is really excellent though perhaps somewhat repetitive. However, I found that this was not the only good track on the CD with my favorites being track 2, "Nuclear Scam" which brings back at the end the theme from "Hymn to the Red October" with some other cool new themes. Also track 5, "Ancestral Aid" is dramatic which you can tell from the Amazon sample. There is only just over 30 minutes of music on this CD, and tracks 1 and 2 are close to half the CD, so I think that my purchase was well worth it, as I enjoy immensely the music brought here. If you enjoy Russian Coral work, as well as beautifully done orchestral work (with brass, woodwind, and percussion emphasis in different tracks), then I think you will enjoy this CD.
Some things in here don't react to well to bullets!!.......2007-01-10
A great soundtrack recording to the best submarine movie of the late
20th century.
Listen to Ryan and Ramius discuss their strategy, the North Atlantic
hunt, and silent run through Red Route 1.
Remembering Poledouris.......2006-11-11
In the light of Basil Poledouris's passing, right now I'm finding myself listening to one of his better works: "The Hunt For Red October".
The album opens with 'Hymn For Red October', Poledouris's best main title after Conan's. The Russian chant gives this theme its power, although I fought with a couple of friends who were supportive of James Horner's Russian song in the main and end credits of "Red Heat"; but I have always considered Red October to be a great song. There are intimate moments in this album that give us a break from the coming action, and they are better displayed in 'Two Wives', a cue that was never used in the film. Another great moment is 'Ancestral Aid', where the Russian chorus burst in fury, showcasing the scene where the Red October manages to escape from a pursuing torpedo, and later coming to a calm, yet chilling second half. And the action cues are a real treat here: I love the crescendos in the track 'Chopper', a track that truly makes the listener feel he/she is on board a helicopter. 'Nuclear Scam' is also quite impressive if we think that the Russian submarine's crew escapes from a fake nuclear accident. Finally, we have 'Kaboom!', a relentless cue that makes us sweat, feeling that we're being chased by a submarine. In general, this is a good work by the late Basil Poledouris.
The only letdown, however, is the running time of thirty minutes of the whole album, probably because there is not much music in the movie. In fact, as great as it sounds, the track 'Course Two-Five-Zero' is too short to be really appreciated at twenty one seconds. Yet, if you want to appreciate one fine work from this fine composer, who left us recently, "The Hunt For Red October" might be your CD.
Like watching the movie again.......2006-11-03
I was only interested in Hymn to Red October but the whole cd turned out to be much better than I expected.
If You like it loud & in Russian this is for you.......2006-09-21
This is no"masterpiece"..Perhaps all of the Russian choral work reflects the theme, although there is as much that is non-Russian going on in this film as there is that concerns the doings aboard the Russian submarine..And isn't it a bit hackneyed to load up a film that has to do with the cold-war era Russian military with russian language singing? Why not just insert bits from "Boris Gudunov"or a Russian easter service te deum?Sorry, but when not writing "action" noise cues or letting the Russian vocal chorus do it's thing, this soundtrack has very little to offer...

Argue with a Tree- live concert in Texas.......2007-01-10
I absolutely love this CD! It is a collection of Blue October's songs from past cd's while in concert in Texas. It is amazing. You will feel as if you were there singing along with the rest of the crowd to every song. Highly, highly reccommend this CD.
Amazing Talent.......2006-12-06
No other way to explain how much Blue October's music has helped me. It has brought me closer to the the band and has allowed me to be who I am today. Magnificant lyrics, awesome bass, violin, piano, etc. It is a whirlwind of encantations that have allowed me to shed a tear and even embrace my world as I know it. Justin, a pure genius right by his own experiences brings you into his world and allows you to listen to his own fears and failures.
Never in my life have I ever purchased more than one album from any given artist. Justin and the boys have graced my ears. I now own 5 of 5 albums. One "Argue with a Tree" a live version of History for Sale and Consent to Treatment combined into one. Had to have it!
I am only sorry that I will have to wait a few years before they come out with a new album. For now I have everything including Foiled... now if I can just get my hands on his Last Wish (5591) albums...
I am and will always remain a faithful fan! -Thank you, Justin! You rock my world!

Live Blue October.......2006-05-20
If you have never heard Houston born, San Marcos based Blue October before and you can't go right out and see a live show then this album is the one for you!
A live show will keep you buying their music and going to their shows for the rest of your life. They rock, hands down. Justin brings so much of his personal life into his lyrics that you can't help but identify with the pain and struggle he's dealt with. And not only angst ridden songs grace this album; the album features a couple of more upbeat, even "fun" songs, such as Italian Radio and Breakfast After Ten (great break-up song). This live album also includes the hit "Calling You" which was featured on the American Wedding soundtrack.
I have been a fan since my first live show back in the late 90's and they have never let me down. Justin, Jeremy, Ryan, Matt and CB all bring the house down with each show and each song. If you buy this album (and you should!) you must FOR SURE buy "Foiled" to go with it...and "History For Sale." And if you still don't believe that this band rocks, go to VH1 and watch their video "Hate Me." It is climbing the charts in leaps and bounds.
An old H-Town fan!
One of the best concerts ever.......2005-05-04
I was at the Lakewood Theatre in Dallas Friday June 4, 2004 for the recording of this album - it was a historic night. One of the best and most underrated bands in rock played a 26-song career-spanning set that was nothing short of amazing. This is simply one of the best albums you could ever buy. A must-have.

--Jerry McCulley

One of the best...........2006-11-30
This is one of the most satisfying U2 albums. Very underrated. Upon a first listen, I think alot of people will find this album bland, but it is incredibly complex for a sophmoric album, particularly since Bono's lyrics had been stolen immediately prior to recording this album. It's incredible that they were still able to complete this album. It really shows a maturity from Boy and points to the direction that would happen with War, Joshua Tree, etc.. Highlights include Gloria, Rejoice, I Threw a Brick Through a Window. My favorite U2 song of all time is Tomorrow. The texture of this song is incredible. I can't find any info on any session musicians that may have played on this album but I am sure that Tomorrow starts with Uillian Pipes. Awesome. This album is definitely in my top 4 or 5 from U2 (1. Joshua Tree, 2. Achtung Baby, 3. War, 4. October, 5. All That You Can't..). Enjoy!!!

I apologise in advance - for me the best 'complete' albums by U2 were their first ones. Don't get me wrong, having seen them on the last tour it was simply one of the best concerts I'd ever seen. But their most recent albums just don't have the energy, drive and in some ways creativity that the Boy, October and War had - culminating in The Joshua Tree. I grew up with this album, having first seen them back in 1983. So I have no idea what this album must sound like to newer ears. The anthemic "Gloria" sets the pace which is wonderfully maintained throughout. For a band to release an album of this quality as their second album is superb and maybe it should be judged that way. You knew this band was either going to be around for quite a while or they'd lose the plot on their next album and that would be the end. Thankfully they delivered a classic with War. Steve Lillywhites production is superb - listen to the haunting "Tomorrow" - simple, spartan, very effective. Buy it and just enjoy the raw energy that it contains. It is a classic.
Pressed Leaves and Deadwood.......2006-09-14
In their biography 'The Unforgettable Fire' it is stated that Bono, before creating U2's 'Sgt. Pepper' lost the luggage that contained the lyrics to their next work. 'October' was their next work. 'October' has the advantage of spontaneity, but also at the expense of some spotty, tentative moments on this their second album. While there are off-the-cuff deliveries on the C.D., there are moments of brilliance as well. The shimmering quality of some of their music here make it essential for U2 fans. The Edge's guitar patterns are again hallmark to the group's success. On 'October' his guitar roars more than on 'Boy' for a different, yet satisfying effect. Piano chords are prominent this time throughout like no other album. (Only "Lemon" from 'Zooropa' or "New Year's Day" from 'War' come to mind.) It is a hypnotic and beautiful creation. It is also their most overtly Christian album.
The highlights are essential U2. "Gloria" finds the best troubadour qualities of this raw, yet able young band. "Tomorrow" also heralds a build-up they would perfect later, but already beacons what can be termed Christian existentialism. Their Irish heritage laces much of the instrumentation here and in other parts of the album. "I Fall Down," and "I Threw a Brick Through a Window" continue their venue of passion ably. "Rejoice" is nearly frenetic in its devotion. In contrast, the title track is quietly beautiful like few U2 songs are delivered. On the other hand, the rest of the album is a mixed bag. With a bit more time, Bono could have done more than improvise with "Fire" and "With a Shout". "Stranger in a Strange Land" does have a point, but they seem to linger too long on their delivery and destination. "Is That All?" makes us wonder just that for their finale, where they seem to stumble off the stage.
Despite the flaws and misfortunes, U2 still had the energy and focus to put out a fine, if sometimes mixed, effort. With 'War' they would start a run of commercially and artistically perfected and powerful albums that would continue to renovate the landscape of popular music. 'October' is a fine, transitional album that showcases their musical development with results that are unique and often satisfying like no other album.
U2's Excellent October.......2006-08-07
Building on the momentum from their first album "Boy," U2's second album, "October," is another great step forward for Bono & company. Great rockers all over this one, such as "Gloria," "I Fall Down," "I Threw A Brick Through A Window," "Tomorrow," "With A Shout," and "Is That All?", as well as the quiet beauty of the title track. Great work here from Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton & Larry Mullen Jr. Mind you, the band's full flowering would come with their classic third album, "War," but "October" is excellent U2.
Get the 'Gloria' single instead.......2006-08-01
'Gloria' is an beautiful sweeping emotional love anthem. May be in my U2 top ten, which is saying a lot.
The rest of this album holds no appeal to me at all. Where most of U2's music has a timeless quality that makes it hard to date, this is very a much an awkward early-Eighties album.

There's a comfortable sense of the familiar to James Taylor's first collection of new songs since 1997's Grammy winner Hourglass; such is the curse of being a decades-spanning cultural icon. But, as on his best work, there's also an almost stealthy sense of musical restlessness that seeps into Taylor's songs here, as he colors some with deft jazz and international influences. The reunion with producer Russ Titelman (they last collaborated on 1976's In the Pocket) seems to have gratifyingly inspired as much gentle reassessment as retrenchment. Longtime Titelman compatriot Ry Cooder guests on the title track, a song whose autumnal comforts fit the Taylor canon and other album tracks like "September Grass," "Baby Buffalo," "My Traveling Star," and "On the Fourth of July" (the story of Taylor's romantic meeting with current wife Kim) like an old slipper. However, "Belfast to Boston" cries for peace in Ireland and elsewhere with some surprising Gaelic flourishes, while "Whenever You're Ready" throws some Brazilian rhythms and jazzy horns into the mix, and Dave Grusin's slick orchestral arrangement turns "Mean Old Man" into an elegant cabaret surprise. A little more of this musical adventure amidst the familiar romantic ballads and paeans to the comfort of home and family--including a gorgeously spare cover of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"--certainly wouldn't hurt. --Jerry McCulley

Mature James T........2007-05-28
This is a CD I had looked at many times. I finally took the time to give it a chance. It is obviously work of a man who has settled comfortably into his getting older skin. I like the tempos. I like the calmness and reflecting tone many of the songs take on. Good traveling and hanging around the home music.
outstanding.......2007-03-17
James Taylor is a world class musician and artist that deserves a world of credit as im sure he has gotten throughout his life time.
Taylor maintains integrity .......2007-03-05
So many elder acts rest on their laurels. James Taylor could not be accused of this, although he does maintain the structure and style of his music. In this way, it simply becomes " JT style".
" October Road " came out at a time when its presence was desperately needed. Amid Britney, Christina and Justin rose a true artist, like a phoenix, here to give the public something to think about. " The Fourth of July", one of Taylor's all-time best songs, provides head and heart food right off the bat.
" Whenever You're Ready" is another great one that rolls more than rocks, but drives home a steady beat. " Caroline I See You" is beautiful, recalling early ballads. The only clunker is " Mean Old Man", and even it has some charm after a few spins.
James Taylor proves that old formulas can result in new sounds. The integrity of his body of work remains in tact.
The latest JT other than Christmas`.......2007-02-01
Hmmm. A step from the eco-friendly "Hourglass," this seems to be the next chapter in JT's life. My favourite is "Traveling Star," because I love all the wanderlust songs he does. "Carry Me On My Way" speaks to the happiness he's found in his life at this point, and the way he worries about what lies in his wake. This isn't my favourite album of his, but it's definitely a good one. He tends to go a little "big band" with "Mean Old Man," but then redeems himself (with me) with "Belfast to Boston" -- a commentary on how nice it would be to have a world without war. The man is a lyrical genius -- how can you argue with "It's the big time life that I can't abide -- Raise my rent, and tan my hide" ?
Great on paper, yet it lacks sparkle.......2006-01-01
I bought every James Taylor album from Sweet Baby James through his live CD and New Moon Shine, with much enjoyment from each one. I must confess that Hourglass never took hold with me. I felt underneath it all, it was a little sad, a little morose, and I never listened to it much past the first couple run-throughs. Then I donated it to the library. In addition, I've begun to sour on James Taylor because of his politics, but he's never been obnoxious about it like Tim Robbins, so it isn't that big a deal. But I think his feelings about the country are affecting the mood of his music.
It was with much trepidation that I approached October Road. In fact I did not buy it when it first appeared. I waited to hear a friend's copy.
In terms of songwriting, October Road is a great return to form. Sonically it seems a bit closed-in (not a lot of acoustic space apparent), and the production is a bit sparse compared to what we've heard from James in the past.
Still, James sounds a little tired to me. The tempos are mostly slow to middlin', and I don't get a lot of joy from this music compared to say, his "JT" album. Mean Old Man is quietly humorous, and Whenever You're Ready is bouncy enough. Whatever. I still get an underlying sense of sadness or weariness listening to this album, and frankly I'd rather go for something more energizing.
The songcraft and playing are top notch. Your reaction may be different. You couldn't go wrong picking it up used at half price. You can always sell it again if it doesn't please. I don't know if James will ever make another album I can get enthused about, unless it is a live album. James seems to keep improving as a live performer at the same time his studio albums lose their appeal for me.

The most enchanting voice ever recorded..........2007-05-21
Mary Fahl... what a voice... beautiful, mysterious, powerful, enchanting... all these words only try to describe the experience of listening to her
voice. I wish I would have had the chance of seeing them live... and listening to her...
Mary's voice, together with perfect songwriting, makes it the perfect formula for an incredible experience listening to this album.
By far, it's their best album, all songs are unbelievably beautiful, but I have my 3 personal favorites:
1. Bury my lovely - it's a hymn to heaven... it's the best way to describe this song... optimistic, powerful, and Mary's voice in total control.
2. Where you are - beautiful ballad, showing Mary's powerful voice.
3. Return to me - the most perfect and beautiful ballad of the last 20 years... it will touch your heart like no other song before.
BUY IT, dive into Mary's enchantment, let her take control of your feelings. You won't be disappointed...
Hauntingy Beautiful.......2007-05-13
What a hidden gem! The music is beautiful and not well known. This is a wonderful CD.
October Project Video.......2007-03-09
It has been quite a few years now since I witnessed October Project make their 'Bury My Lovely' video in the loft of a friend's barn in Carnation, WA. They worked tirelessly until around midnight in the darkness with limited lighting from the spots on the set and from the kleigs outside the barn windows illuminating smoke effects generated from a tiny box. It was the first time I had heard the group, and the music was completely spellbinding to me....even after multiple takes to try to achieve just the desired effect. Finally, the group wrapped up the evening and preceded them down the dark barn stairs. I was afraid some of them might fall, so I offered my hand to lead the way. Mary Fahl took my hand, and we descended the stairs of the 100-year-old barn together. The spell that she cast on me then continues to this day. Her incredible haunting contralto voice, her presence in the black trenchcoat and (then) dark hair, her ability to transform the lyrics of Julie and Emil into music magic, and that moment when I actually touched her hand....all of it is embedded in my soul. The other reviews here are absolutely correct about the poignancy of this group's first album. Whatever caused the dissolution of this group, it is a shame and a heartache for the rest of us. One can only hope they will reunite.
the best cd ever for be the first........2007-01-11
this cd is their first best no question about it.
My Favorite Group and CD.......2007-01-10
October Project will forever be my most favorite music group. I am saddened that they disbanded. Julie Flanders lyrics are incredibly beautiful. Mary Fahl's and Marina Belica's voices compliment one another perfectly. I am a huge fan of Mary Fahl as her voice is hauntingly beautiful. I haven't found anyone who even compares. Thank you for the music!

october project second cd still good but not like the 1 cd.......2007-01-11
No questions the first cd is the best but the second takes some credit also.
Dissapointing.......2006-01-15
I bought it 60% off of $3 so really didn't lose that much. It's a good thing too. Although the music is good and the girl has a good voice, her voice does not work with the music that they play. She'd be much better off doing a solo project with the music that can play alongside her. It's starts sounding like a rock band and then comes in her voice, which doesn't work for rock at all. I'm not saying that "nobody in their right mind would like this cd", I just didn't really like the combination they had.
Beautiful, lush and lyrical, but should be sold with prozac.......2005-12-27
I agree with all the positives that have been said about this undeniably beautiful album, but it is overwraught with apocalyptic neurosis. A few examples: "The world is falling apart / He's getting older / And there's a funeral in his heart;" "...where God has no image and man finds no grace;" "What dark time is coming / What dark time is here / The prophet emerges / In garments of fear." And on like that.
So, while lushly layered and beautifully instrumented, if one actually engages the message of the songs, the net result is quite depressing. And unlike with Toad the Wet Sprocket, which similarly carts an emotionally heavy wagon, there isn't a release through the inherent energy of the music. Similarly nuanced but less emotionally exhausting albums are Wild Colonials' "Fruit of Life," Zero 7's "Simple Things" and Delerium's "Poem".
Happy listening!
Second Project From the Project.......2005-04-24
Continuing from where they left from their self-titled debut, "Falling Farther In" contains more of the moving music that they left us wanting. Mary Fahl's vocals continue to mezmerize and the writing is even better here than on the debut, as if that were even possible! I listen to this CD all of the time, I never tire of it, and have often skied to the Project' and Mary Fahl's vocals. Talk about inpirational music with her flowing vocals among the beautiful scenery.
Favorites on this CD are "Something More Than This," the title cut, "One Dream," and "Adam & Eve."
You can't go wrong with either of the 'Project's two CD's, and in my opinion both are must haves for any CD collection!
A Subtly Textured Tapestry of Hope, Darkness and Yearning.......2005-01-25
"Falling Farther In," OP's second album/CD, bears out the potential evident in their lush, darkly gothic debut. For anyone wanting a "bottom line" review before I dig into details, I'd call this "alterna-goth-pop," with all of the best of many genres present (intelligence, originality, accessibility, a brooding sensibility) with none of the crappy trappings (disposability, suicide-inducing hopelessness, hard on the ears).
Musically, the album manages to be both cohesive and wonderfully diverse. Richly textured with great production and musical depth, the songs range from anthemic, acoustic introspection ("Deep As You Go") to sweeping, lush ballad ("If I Could") to driving, percussion-punctuated rock ("Funeral in His Heart"). "Sunday Morning Yellow Sky" is a stand out track in these regards; driving bass line, sharp guitar strings and a full band to fill in between (and it's hip-swayingly groovy, too). "Something More Than This" features a fluid, rolling piano sound that really builds with the song's themes of ache and hope.
Even more, the music is emminently accessible. Unlike many musical "ar-teests" who seem to think it's their job to create music that's truly work to listen to, OP crafted a very accessible collection of songs with FFI. Whether you're grooving along with the melody or hearing the refrain in your head, the music on this CD was made to be pleasing to your ears (as well as your spirit).
Of course, it's not just OP's music that makes it distinctive. Mary Fahl's voice is in full power here - and I don't mean that she belts it out whenver possible like Celine Dion. Fahl makes full use of her vocal range, as well as being very comfortable singing or even talking quietly. To be sure, her voice soars and swoons, but it's always in service to the song and story, not as a showboat kind of effort. If you've never heard Mary Fahl before, I envy you the joy of hearing her for the first time: she's the brooding pop sister of Trisha Yearwood, someone with a sweet, strong voice that knows how to infuse it with life's sorrow and passion.
Lyrically, FFI is miles ahead of OP's debut. I'd consider the debut album the equivalent of a high school senior's (or perhaps college freshman's) take on poetry and gothic storytelling: you can feel the talent and potential, but it's struggling to breath through the conventions and cliches of the form. With FFI, OP's songwriters really break through. The lyrics are specific, intelligent, literate and meaningful. The album cascades with references to Alice in Wonderland, the 1993 tragedy in Waco, Texas, mid life crisis, the struggle to be a better lover/person, and more. There's a definite undertone of spirituality in the lyrics that's never preachy, always reaching.
And while I DO rate this album with Amazon's highest rating, there are a couple of misfires: tracks 5 and 7. They're not horrible, by any means, but compared to the rest of the album, they're fairly bland and unremarkable. "Johnny" is a tad didactic, while "After the Fall" fails to excite.
But that leaves 9 great songs, a feat by any standard. I can't even pick "stand outs" from the 9 because they're all just incredibly good. Start discovering the richness hidden here - you'll be glad you did.
Postscript: there's a certain amount of irony in that this album is STILL in print, long after Sony deemed OP not commercially viable.

Quite the Doom Metal Masterpiece.......2007-07-21
Type O Negative is a band known for its moody spooky doom metal sound. Whether sometimes slighly corny the music itself is still amazing. This, next to World Coming Down, is one of my favorites by them. 90% of the songs on this album are at least good to great. The cd itself starts out with a slight joke to kind of get you acquainted with the band and their jokely nature. It then kicks out right into music with a pretty awesome opener "Love You To Death". The best songs on the cd, or at least my personal favorites are at the top "Wolf Moon", "Be My Druidess", "Burnt Flowers Fallen", and "In Praise Of Bacchus". The albums pretty much loaded with great tracks. Here's my ratings... (excluding interludes)
3. Love You To Death - 9.5/10
4. Be My Druidess - 10/10
5. Green Man - 10/10
6. Red Water (Christmas Mourning) - 7.5/10
7. My Girlfriend's Girlfriend - 8.5/10
8. Die With Me - 9/10
9. Burnt Flowers Fallen - 10/10
10. In Praise Of Bacchus - 10/10
11. Cinnamon Girl - 8/10
13. Wolf Moon - 10/10
14. Haunted - 6/10
Overall : 88% B+
Since the last song's the weakest it's not a great way to end the album but the amazing songs on the rest of the cd make up for it. It's just too bad "Wolf Moon" wasn't the last track. Anyway the whole ambiance of the entire album is amazing, that's why the cd still gets 5 stars. A really really awesome listen.
Taking a second, haunting listen.......2007-06-12
I absolutely hated this album when I first heard it. I had heard "My Girlfriend's Girlfriend" off of an independent radio station near me. Since it was upbeat and somewhat dark sounding, I figured I'd give it a try. I had already heard the cover of "Black Sabbath", and not expecting a full album of this slow pace, I picked it up used. I was so disappointed. At the time, I was kind of depressed, a sophomore in high school, and I needed something even more depressing. Generally, I'd reach for Cannibal Corpse or some extreme death metal. The growling and screaming usually did the trick. I put this cd in and sat in a corner in my classroom (we were watching a movie at the time) and I could only listen to the same two tracks, the previously mentioned one and "Wolf Moon" solely because Peter Steele's voice on that track freaked me out. Safe to say, I sold this cd and moved on.
Now, some 9 years later, I picked it up AGAIN, trying to give it a second whirl. I am not disappointed this time, and I wish I had never gotten rid of it. Sure, the pace is slow and dreary, but the fact that it still scares me is unbelievable. The songs, the lyrics, the vocals, the keyboards, all of it fits the mood. This album is unbelievable and should be heard by anyone who likes music.
The best song, by far, is still "Wolf Moon". Listen to this late at night, alone, and in a car ride through the country and you, too, will get shivers down your spine.
My favorite Type O Negative album.......2007-05-16
I love this album as a whole and songs individually. I can listen to it over and over, year after year and continue to love it after many years. Definately one of their finest albums.
His voice will rock your soul and curl your toes!.......2007-01-07
This was my first introduction to TON and still my favorite. Forget about it being "Goth" forget about it being metal, it's just great music. Peter's voice is one of the most...spiritual experiences ever. This is a must for any lonely woman. So light some candles, crank it up, and make sure you have plenty of batteries on hand!
Happy Halloween, and beware the wolves at night..........2006-10-31
Ah yes, Halloween is here again, and what better way to celebrate it than with an album like "October Rust"? It has become somewhat of a tradition for me to listen to this album every Halloween (but not only on Halloween, of course), and one listen should tell you why.
Taking the sludgy metal of Black Sabbath and the gothy atmospherics of the Cure, Type O Negative have crafted a distinctive style of doomy goodness that will fulfill all of your vampiric needs. Frontman Pete Steele's booming vocals drive these tracks perfectly, melding beautifully with the thick layers of guitars and keys. Songs like "Love You to Death", "Wolf Moon", and "Red Water" draw you in with their dark, enveloping melodies, with Pete's unique vocals underscoring them like no other vocalist could. But, all of the above are nearly a ray of sunshine compared to the closing track, the huge, epic "Haunted". This song crawls at a snail's pace for its 10-minute length, like some sinister creature emerging from the depths, and likewise Pete's vocals reach their peak of haunting evilness. The line "Oh, how I hate the morning light" is sung in such an impossibly low octave, you'd swear this fellow cannot be human. Purely awesome.
However, this album isn't all sludgy doom. There's plenty of diversity here, while keeping with the dark, sinister feel. "Die with Me" is more wistful and plaintive, while "Be My Druidess" has a vaguely Cure-like feel. The band also lighten things up a bit with the wacky pop tune "My Girlfriend's Girlfriend", and a fun cover of Neil Young's "Cinammon Girl".
Simply put, a Halloween without Type O is not complete. When you party with the ghosts and ghouls tonight, don't forget to put this on.
