American Song Potpourri.......2000-08-01

The 28 songs on this CD provide a broad spectrum of American art songs. JanDeGaetani possesses a beautiful mezzo-soprano voice and ideally expresses the proper emotions these songs require. Gilbert Kalish's piano supplies the necessary support without getting in the way of the singer. All in all, this is a good collaboration.

Kalish plays like a pig........1999-12-02

While I enjoyed De Gaetani's singing, Kalish's piano playing reminded me of a player piano.

This is a great album. It spans the spectrum of 20th Century American music from the tonality and romanticism of Stephen Foster to the experimentality of John Cage.

Jan DeGaetani and Gilbert Kalish, with their understanding and sensitivity to the music of their time, combine to form a duo that sets the standard for interpretation of this music.

Students, professionals, and general classical music lovers will cherish this CD in their library.

Song: "Don't Blame Me" Music by Jimmy McHugh, Lyrics by Dorothy Fields, Performed by Leslie Uggams The Bad and the Beautiful had been set in Hollywood, but Two Weeks in Another Town moved the location to Rome, where washed-up actor Jack Andrus (Douglas) is summoned by his former director (Edward G. Robinson) to assist him on a cheapie for a foreign producer. From there Jack's "two weeks in another town" find him coming to terms with his past through a new web of personal relationships. Although not a sequel to The Bad and the Beautiful, composer David Raksin treated Two Weeks in Another Town as a virtual "part two," reusing several of his themes from the earlier picture, including, briefly, the main theme itself -- for a screening of The Bad and the Beautiful as one of the "former productions" by the new film's characters. Frankly, I thought at first that the people who reviewed this album had not listened to it, but I think I got it.
6 people all giving 6 stars ? Come on , Greg Nicholson, you can do better that inviting your friends to submit comments.

As for the so-called music, it is not so great. A very strong feeling of already-heard ( early 90's ... ) but with no real character or creation.

That is sad in a way because I think there's potential in Greg's voice and guitar. If only he wasn't trying to mimic other ( bad ) bands ...

After listening carefully to this album , looking for an "incredible" song ( as advertised by Greg's friends) in vain, I wouldn't recommend this album.

I have listened to all of Greg's music, and I just think he is terrific. He has two other cds that I think are just as good as "High Trapeze." When I hear his music, I know it really means something. He is talented and everyone should own a copy of his cd.

The High Trapeze, and for that matter everything Greg Nicholson has recorded that i have listened to, has a sincerity and an honesty that i feel most new artists have ignored in their haste to make a quick buck and sling out any old thing and call it music. His songs are deep and thoughtful, heart-felt. This is one artist to keep your eyes on!

God, what a voice!.......2000-11-15

I was in a club to see another band play, I'd never heard of Greg at the time. When he first came on stage I thought "wow. He's so YUMMY!".

Anyway, when I heard him sing it just melted my heart. Great songs, killer voice, and melodies that you can't forget. I bought this CD and took it home with me and I've been in love with the CD (and Greg!) ever since. Every single song on it just touches me. I recommend it to anyone and everyone!
