What Hits!?
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
An overview of the Red Hot Chili Peppers' formative 1984 to 1989 stint with EMI Records, What Hits? contains plenty of hits, including their first truly huge success, "Under the Bridge," from their 1991 debut on Warner Bros., Blood Sugar Sex Magic. Other highlights here, including 1990's "Show Me Your Soul" (which proves the band learned plenty from working with George Clinton on 1985's Freaky Styley), their superb cover of Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground," and the feel-good funk of "Behind the Sun," show the Peppers paved the way for a school of alt bands who melded funk with rock riffs. There are plenty other less-celebrated moments from the Peppers' early days that shine on their own, and only a few self-indulgent clunkers (what drove them to such a dismal performance of Jimi Hendrix's "Fire"?). This collection will suffice for the casual fan who needs a quick intro to the Peppers' history. --Lorry Fleming --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Great to Hear All those great Voices from the Past.......2007-07-05
I just wanted to confirm what the first reviewer had to say about this CD. To hear Ethyl Merman, Mary Martin, Andrea McCardle etc. singing their trademark songs brought a lot of memories from the mid-centry musical theater back again. The last song by Glynis Johns is especially poignant.
You certainly can't beat the price!
A Good One!.......2006-11-10
This is a very good CD, mostly because it's the original artists. I've had some that were re-recorded by no name artists that were ghastly. This one is a really good one--including the sound quality. If I had one wish, I would wish it were longer!

Typical Mancini.......2007-03-25
First, I really like Mancini's music generally and I am really concerned that he may be one of the greats of American music who will soon be forgotten if he hasn't been already. (US music schools tend to be a little snobby and don't give a number of truly great American composers their due.) However, the mix of this particular CD is simply too average. Many good songs are not on it and some weak ones are. I would not recommend this CD except to ManciniPhiles like me.
It's Hard to Believe He's Gone.......2006-05-23
Henry Mancini gave us so much of our consciousness of the 1960s and 1970s, and yet was "out" almost as soon as he was "in."
His work became synonymous with much-despised "elevator music" in the later 1960s. This stereotype (or monotype, for his earliest works) can mislead.
For example, "Lujon" [not in this collection] was used in a movie just last year to exemplify mystery and an exotic atmosphere.
Mancini dies way too young. While some would argue that he'd become a self-parody, his innate gifts compromised by relentless commercialization, you cannot take away his lasting gift to our culture. He was an original, and he captured an essence of our collective experience.
He's here in this collection, waiting round the bend, my Huckleberry friend.
Nostalgic.......2006-02-20
A great trip down memory lane. The selections sound just like I remember them from the movies and the radio. Enjoy
Henry Mancini's Greatest Hits.......2005-07-13
This CD is all one needs to understand why this dude is the master when it comes to composing. Having been introduced to this great human being at an early age, my fascination for his work is still a vital part of my being. This CD is just what I have always wanted. It has all the classics, along with some older gems I never knew existed. I love it so much, that I am going to send my mama back home one. She was, is and always will be perhaps his GREATEST FAN ever. If you just can't live without Mancini's music, then this CD is for you. Enjoy, enjoy,
enjoy!!

Hits of the Time Never Truly Die.......2007-03-23
I am sure everyone has at least one if not more compact discs in their car that if someone happed to stumble across you would say, wow that is so old I didn't even know I still have that cd, and pray they don't say anything me about it. More often that not this is your one pick me up disc, right? Well, I defiantly have a couple of these types that only one friend knows that I still listen to. These compact discs I am talking about for me are Now, Vol. 1 and Now, That's What I Call Music! 2.
The main reason I still listen to these compact discs when I have a bad day would be not really because of the words or the beat, but mostly because of what the songs remind me of. They are a familiar thing and you always remember the words no matter how hard you have tried to forget. I am one of those people that anything that I am familiar and comfortable with I will not get rid of because I don't really like changes much. These were all popular songs when I was in junior high and they remind me of those days. Also, when I am just cruising down the highway blasting the compact disc as loud as possible and belting out the words is comforting to me.
These compact discs may not be on everyone's must buy list but they are still good songs no matter how old they get. Every song on these two compact discs were played on the radio many times over. In many cases way too often but this did help in making sure everyone heard these songs. Also, the beats and words were easy enough to follow for the younger kids. With these being songs you would hear on the radio they would also be played anywhere that junior high aged kids would be hanging out like school dances and skating rinks.
I also feel that there is one really meaningful song on the second disc of this collection. This song has a very simple beat, but if you sit there and listen to the words it has a ton of meaning. This is the last song on the disc antilitter Everybody's Free by Baz Luhrmann. This is by far the song on these compact discs I listen to the most as a pick me up song. I don't even sing to this one, I just sit there and soak in the words. I think these compact discs are just all around enjoyable because can you honestly say if you were alone in your car or house and heard; "Barbie Girl", "...Baby One More Time" or songs by Spice Girls or Backstreet Boys you wouldn't sing along? I love to listen to these old hits and no matter how "uncool" the bands and songs seem to my peers listening to them just never completely die out of my mind.
Vol. 2.......2006-07-17
Okay, so we have the next in the long line of comp. disc's that followed the orininal 'Now!' This album, while still decent, falters a bit I feel. First off, I know that the target audience is kids from 8-14 or so, and teenage girls, but the choosing of songs like Jay-Z's 'Hard Knock Life' and R. Kellys 'When a Womans Fed Up' and then stripping it bare is kinda annoying. Not that I'm really a huge fan of either track, I just hate editing. They were better off to choose songs that didn't have to be cleaned up for the youngins and keep it that way rather than butcher music. Anyways, heres my opinion.
The appearance of Britney was of course nec. when summerizing the pop sensations of the late 90's. Of course the Backstreet BOys will make a repeat appearance because they were just that huge...but what shocked me was seeing Everclear again, not that I'm against it (I love the song despite it was so played out) but it just shocked me that the general 'Top 40' public wanted to hear more from these guys.
This album also included some new acts like 'New Radicals' and Robbie Williams, who is actually one of the greatest things to come out of the UK...ever. Semisonic give us the wreched 'Closing Time' and the Spice Girls say 'Goodbye' to everyone...boohoohoo...There is some hope though. Sheryl Crow delivers another great song, as does U2 with 'Sweetest Thing'. Garbage (awesome band) give us one of my favorite tracks of 'Version 2.0' and Cake delivers one of the best songs of the entire year with 'Never There' (I have this really funny story that goes along with this track...another place another time)...Sublime is also a highlight. Love them, wish it weren't edited, but I still love them! Hate 'Praise You' but love 'Take me There' and while it's not really a song you can't go wrong with Baz Luhrmann.
All in all it's decent...not as consistant as Vol. 1 but still delivering a nice glimpse of my past...and everybody elses!
"NOW" : Version 2.0.......2005-04-14
If "NOW 1" was an experiment that happened to succeed; "NOW 2" displays the results. The album gives brings back all the qualities that made the 1st one work, and refines them. There are a couple of tracks that don't work, but they can be ignored when compared to the number of good songs we get. Wheras the the 1st album was all safe pop/rock with some R&B; this one has some harder rock (Garbage, Sublime), alternative sounds (Fatboy Slim, Cake), even some rap (Jay-Z) and spoken word (Baz Luhrmann). The diversitry is essentail, as that is what truly makes it sound like Top 40 radio. All the sounds mend well for a solid cimpilaton:
(1) Britney Spears "...Baby One More Time" C-. The song is very catchy with a sexual tone in it's slick production, yet there's really nothing left beneath the sugar. Sounds great at first; then we realize how little the song really. Still, it was a VERY big hit, so I guess it deserves a place on the album.
(2) New Radicals "You Get What You Give" A. In response to the fast, flash of Britney; here is a relaxed, low key tune that's really about something. Lead singer, Gregg Alexander has a cool tone to his voice that is perfect for delivering his intelligent lyrics. Though the song clocks in at near 5 minutes; it is always able to keep attention throughout.
(3) Robbie Williams "Millennium" A-. Of couse it was shamelessly released to take advantage of the Y2K craze, but it's still a really good single. Robbie is definetly a great male vocalist and his material is equal to his voice. The lyrics really do sum up the insane feelings and fears of the time. It's a shame Americans have never caught on to Robbie.
(4) Semisonic "Closing Time" B. Semisonic was praised to be a great post-grunge band, but they never lived up to it. The 1st single of their sophmore LP isn't bad at all; it's just on the safe side. There's nothing wrong with the craft of delivery, but think about what it could have been if it was more daring.
(5) U2 "The Sweetest Thing" (The Single Mix) B+. Originally a B-side from "The Joshua Tree" (1987), this is a pretty good mix of a U2 classic. Although it's not one of their VERY BEST works; it still does a nice job of conveying the talent U2 brought to the 1980s. A minor, if highly satisfing offer from one of the greatest groups ever.
(6) Sheryl Crow "My Favorite Mistake" A. Simply put; this is Sheryl Crow at her best. Striking, heartfelt lyrics combined with her near flawless guitar chords make for an excellent pop/rock track with real heart. One of 1998's best and possible a personal best from her 11 year career.
(7) Fatboy Slim "Praise You" A. Another brilliant offering from Fatboy Slim: an artist who always does things HIS way. Light on substance and lyrics, yet there is so much to praise for the skill and energy which he infuses into the song. This is the perfect example of why he was the front runner of the "Big Beat Movement".
(8) Garbage "I Think I'm Paranoid" A. Perfect, cutting edge rock from a great female group. The song has some meaning, but the most notable parts are the group's electrified beats which are flowing with energy. It's a catchy, distinct sound that we've never heard before, and that is a relief when you consider today's rock music.
(9) Cake "Never There" B-. Very toned down and subdued compared to the last two tracks. Cake seems like an old fashioned group, yet there is something unmistakenly modern about them. This song has many charms, including the content and horn arrangments, but something seems to be holding it back. You wait for everything to just "pop" into something really grand, yet it never does.
(10) 98 Degrees "Because Of You" A-. While "Invisible Man" was good; this was the single that elevated 98 Degrees among the rest in their genre. It is presented as a pop song, yet the slick R&B current runs beneath it all. As male groups go, few can harmnonize like these guys can; and the essential to gracefully deliver these beautiful lyrics. It'a a small treasure.
(11) Spice Girls "Goodbye" A. Yes, that is an "A" next to a song by the Spice Girls. After all the worthless, mindless dance-pop they bombarded us with; they pull together to create a powerful, touching friendship ballad that really gets under the skin. How ironic is it, that their last song released released in the U.S. would turn out to be a masterpiece?
(12) Blackstreet and Mya feat. Ma$e and Blinky Blink "Take Me There" D. What were all these talented artists thinking? Signing up to do a theme song for "Rugrats" is not a smart career move. Everything about this song diminishes the crdibiliity of the artists involved. As a vehicle for the talents of Blackstreet, Mya and Ma$e; this is a deadly miscalculation. A real disaster from otherwise sane producer Teddy Riley.
(13) R. Kelly "When A Womnan's Fed Up" A. Now this is what music SHOULD be. Powerful and deep; this is a perfect single to display R. Kelly's vast talents. Everything falls perfectly into place, and carries alot of atmosphere and dimension. The writing and beats are so crisp and touching that we can't help but get caught up in this heartbreaking tale.
(14) Everclear "Father Of Mine" B+. The usual quality that expect from that wondeful, underrated group known as Everclear. As always, Art Alexakis' powerful lyrics and voice create a rich, vivid single that is flowing with the group's style. Serves as a good companion to Simple Plan's "Perfect" (2004).
(15) Sublime "What I Got" C. There's some skill in this rock tune, but it's just not very satisfying in the end. It's too short and breif to really go anywhere and we crave more. The group, although higly overrated, does have some talent; yet the don't let it shine to it's full potential here.
(16) Backstreet Boys "I'll Never Break Your Heart" B+. An early showcase for the boys' mastery of the pop ballad. The wrioting seems outdated, yet their smooth voices and charisma elevate it to heartfelt and beautiful. They get panned as "teen pop", but this exceeds that classification in almost every way.
(17) Jay-Z "Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)" B+. One of the few rap songs on the earlier "NOW"s; this is a strange mix from Jay-Z. His lyrics a rhyming is as tight as ever, but the chorus borrowed from "Annie" is a little jolting at times. Thankfully it isn't used too much, a mixes fairly well at times. In the enmd this is a solid rap track from a great rapper.
(18) Baz Luhrmann "Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)" A-. This is definetly the most unique song ever put on ANY "NOW". The entire song is spoken word over 5 minutes long. Yet the words have deep sense of poetry to them, and are highly effective because of their relevance. If nothing else this is original to every word.
Bottom Line: ***. A solid collection of Top 40 hits from Late 1998 and early 1999. A good amount of variety and quality helps the album flow very well throughout it's entire running time. It also serves as proof that "NOW" figured out the secret to making a good compilation from the begining. Something that many imitators can't seem to accomplish
A review from a hole in the wall.......2004-11-26
Hmm...It's been almost six years since this release. I still haven't reviewed it! I know, I can't believe I forgot.
Ok.
1. Britney Spears, Baby One More Time: B- I used to hate this song, now I like it because Britney Spears sucks really bad now.
2. New Radicals, You Get What You Give: B Good song. Nothing special, but a good listen.
3. Robbie Williams, Millenium: D- Sorry, I thought it sounded like Justin Timberlake smoking p0t.
4. Semisonic, Closing Time: A One of my favs. Too bad Semisonic was a one-hit wonder.
5. U2, The Sweetest Thing: C- Worst U2 song to date. Slow, stupid, and boring.
6. Sheryl Crow, My Favorite Mistake: B- Not the best from Sheryl Crow, but, I guess it's decent.
7. Fatboy Slim, Praise You: B+ Not the best from Fatoby Slim either. It's still pretty good.
8. Garbage, I Think I'm Paranoid: C+ Pop-Metal? Don't think so.
9. Cake, Never There: B+ Pretty good, but why is it so short?
10. 98, Because Of You: D+ Worst 98 song yet.
11. Spice Girls, Goodbye: F The worst song on the CD. The Spice Girls can do much better!
12. Mya & Blackstreet, Take Me There: F Rugrats? Right...next track
13. R. Kelly, When A Woman's Fed Up: C- This song has absolutely no point! Who cares?
14. Everclear, Father Of Mine: A Woo...a breath of fresh air from the crap on the last 4 tracks. This is a great AC song!
15. Sublime, What I Got: A Once again, this is a great song, that is really short.
16. Backstreet Boys, I'll Never Break Your Heart: C- Meaningful lyrics with horrible singers.
17. Jay-Z, Hard Knock Life: B+ This was a great rap song, but Now could have done a bit better with editing.
18. Baz Luhrman, Everybody's Free To Wear Sunscreen: F I've changed my mind, this is the worst song on this CD. Wait, it can't be because it's not a song!
CD. Various Artists, Now 2 Overall Grade: C+
Truly not the best now, but I've seen much worse with Now 12 and 17.

16. Backstreet Boys, I'll Never Break Your Heart: The song always reminds me of my senior prom. It does bring back bring good memories. A
17. Jay-Z, Hard Knock Life: Yeah it is a ripoff of Annie combined with rap but it is a good song none-the-less. B
18. Baz Luhrman, Everybody's Free To Wear Sunscreen: I am from the class of 1999 and this song repulses me. Baz needs to stick to directing not singing and this was a bad choice to end the cd. F

It's Lacking..........2006-11-15
Yes, yes, "Talking In Your Sleep" and "What I Like About You" are some of the finest pop songs ever. I agree. But what about everything else this band did?
Judging from the skimpy amount of songs this package delivers, you'd think that these blokes never managed to churn out anything more than two decent songs plus filler in between. The filler on this compilation is rather dismal compared to the primary hits.
I would've liked to have seen this disc at least TRY to approach the 80 minutes that CDs can hold. Alas, that's not the case. As such, we get two great tracks, some subpar tracks and a bad impression of the band.
A disappointing set.
GREAT SONG.......2006-04-23
What i like about you is a great song and one of my favorite songs yet. I recommend you listen to it.
THE GREATEST SONG.......2006-01-16
Wow! This song is amazing, What I Like About You. It is one of my favorite songs you'll most likely ever hear. Please play this
song over and over and over again.
fidelity is lacking, not a good quality recording.......2005-09-07
I just got this in the mail today. I hate to say it, but the fidelity on this CD is, while not awful, still noticeably inferior. I have the single "What I Like About You" on a various artists' CD called "Ultimate New Wave Party 1998" (unfortunately mixed), so I bought the Romantics' Greatest Hits album to get a "clean" copy of the track. Comparing the track on the two sources, the copy on the mixed CD simply blows away the copy on the romantics CD, on the fidelity issue. It may not be too noticeable if you just have this copy, but you will notice when comparing with other CDs in your collection. Perhaps it is that the CD was issued in 1990 and is not remastered. Well, obviously there is a better fidelity version out there somewhere, so if you want decent fidelity, you might take a crack at one of the other Romantics' selections further down the page, and spend a bit more money (they may, or may not, be better).
What I like about the Romantics........2005-08-31
This is a pretty simple collection, only 36 minutes, however the Romantics didn't really storm the charts too often. This does give you what you want though. "What I Like About You" of course is included, and kicks off the disc well. Their other hit "Talking In Your Sleep" is great, and got tons of radio time when it came out. Very catchy. Another song I had forgotten about is "One In A Million", and many might recognize that as well. The rest is good filler, the best of which is probably "Open Up Your Door". In short, this is the only Romantics disc any casual fan should ever need.

The critical debate over Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical legacy will no doubt rage for decades. Is he the shrewd populist composer who almost single-handedly revived the moribund stage musical--or a crass, Barnum-esque showman (who almost single-handedly revived the moribund stage musical)? This 18-track anthology chronicles the high points of Sir Andrew's enduring songcraft and the irrefutable impact it's made across a remarkably disparate swath of tastes and genres, from Broadway to Top 40 radio and even the classical repertoire.
If some have accused Lloyd Webber's songs--like "The Music of the Night" (from Phantom of the Opera) and the title tune from Whistle Down the Wind, included here--of having all the melodic and lyrical sophistication of a children's lullaby, that's likely the very element that's made them so appealing to a mass audience. If nothing else, it's a compelling argument for that old notion about it being "the singer, not the song." Indeed, there are few contemporary composers whose music could entice divas from Streisand ("As If We'd Never Said Goodbye" from Sunset Blvd.) to Madonna (Evita's "You Must Love Me") and Charlotte Church ("Pie Jesu" from Requiem) to cover it, let alone forge the very careers of artists like Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford. And if there's any substance to that other criticism of Lloyd Webber lifting the melodic ideas of composers from Verdi to John Williams (we swear that's the theme to Jurassic Park bubbling up in Tom Jones's camped-up take on Whistle's "The Vaults of Heaven"), at least, like virtually every major composer, he's stolen--er, borrowed--from the best. --Jerry McCulley

Andrew LLoyd Webber - Gold Hits.......2007-07-13
I sent this CD to my parents and they love it! It is nice to preview the songs on-line instead of with greasy headphones in a music store! The shipping is always speedy and makes sending gifts across the country so much easier.
The Gold By Andrew.......2007-04-23
This cd is a must have for any Webber fan. It has many great songs from his most sucsessful musicals. But something I don't like about this cd is that some of the singer how sings some of the songs arn't the onse that sings the originals. Like "The Phantom Of The Opera" and "Love Changes Everything". Witch is so sad. Couse the original songs are so much better.
But besides that this cd is very good. With manye nice and difficult songs (I've sung some of the myself in siningclass).
So if you like Andrew's music this most sertanly is a most have.
The best of Webber.......2005-09-12
Although I like Andrew Llloyd Webber and his music very much, this collection earns only 4 stars and it's not because of the quality of the music but the level of performers. If a best of collection is made it should contain the best version ever done and this time it's not true. I could write the same review for the European edition (labeled import here) because the blend of the two would be a perfect best of.
Some examples: this version contains Memory sung by Betty Buckley while the Elaine Page version is light years better. Then it contains Patti Lupone's version of Don't Cry For Me Argentina. Even though Madonna wasn't the best Evita, she definitely sung Argentina in a way no-one could before or will ever. Whistle Down The Wind is represented with 3 songs - the place of the Tom Jones song is not here (the same could be said of Tina Arena's song o the European edition). Instead of the TJ song they could have included Take That Look Off Your Face by Marti Webb - one of the best songs by Webber. Pie Jesu from the Requiem is much better sung by Sarah Brightman. These are the faults.
What about the rest? Pure joy and material worth of 6 stars. Superstar, Phantom Of The Opera, Music Of The Night, I Don't Know How To Love Him, All I Ask Of You, No Matter What, Oh What A Circus - wonderful songs and wonderful performers. My all-time favorite from Webber will always be Music Of The Night and the version included here is the mesmerizing adaptation of Michael Crawford.
I don't advise anyone not to buy this album - it's good material, however it's far from being perfect.
THE BEST OF LLOYD WEBBER MADE FOR THE AMERICAN AUDIENCES.......2005-01-31
There are numerous compilations out on the market full of Andrew Lloyd Webber's music. As most people know, Lloyd Webber is the most successful musical composer of all time and many of his songs became standards not only in the theatre history, but also as tops on the charts. Even though he's British, his influence on the shape of the modern musical theatre expanded over the West End boundaries long ago and has thus made an enormous impact on Broadway. Two of his shows ("Cats" and "The phantom of the opera") hold the record as two the longest running shows in the history of Broadway. He has also been the only composer to have three of his shows running at Broadway concurrently. This compilation captures some of the best songs he has ever written, he personally supervised it and it is the best thing to have if you can't afford his five-CD compilation called "Now and forever", which was selected and supervised by him as well. You should bear in mind, however, that there are two compilations called Gold out there: The one made for the European and the British market, and this one, made for the American buyers. Some of the songs on both of them are the same, the others are performed by different artists and some can be found only in one of the two. This one here was issued later and it is digitally remastered. Therefore you should check your favourites and buy accordingly, or, if you can, buy them both, since both of them contain interesting songs and performers.
So here are my thoughts about the tracks in this one:
1. "Superstar" and "I don't know how to love him" are both from the concept album of "Jesus Christ Superstar". They sound wonderful as ever, although the orchestrations may seem a bit dated by now.
2. "Sunset Boulevard" is marked here with two songs. Barbra Streisand's powerful voice shines all the way through in "As if we never said goodbye"; it's a shame she never played Norma Desmond on Broadway, since Patti LuPone wasn't allowed to take her Norma to New York, and Glenn Close butchered the role. Her limited vocal abilities were hardly suited for the material, as it is shown by the second Sunset song, "The perfect year", performed by Close and Alan Campbell. They both lack a decent singing voice, so this is the one song I skip regularly. The song itself sounds much better in its single version with pops orchestration, as can be heard on the European version of this compilation, where it is performed by Dina Carroll. This version here can hardly be considered a gold one.
3. "The Phantom of the Opera" is represented by three songs. Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman performance in the song of the same title is amazing. They were both born to play their roles in this show and their voices fit together perfectly. Sarah can hit the high notes in the end like no other Christine. Cliff Richard and Sarah sing the lovely ballad "All I ask of you" with passion, and Cliff has a wonderful warmth in his voice. Finally, Michael Crawford gives his unique and mesmerising interpretation in "The music of the night".
4. The 1996 movie version of "Evita" is Madonna's best role to date and it brought an Academy Award for Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, who wrote "You must love me" especially for the big screen. This is another wonderful ballad with the haunting cello and piano solo. It just proves that Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice were the best collaborators. They really should do another musical together.
5. "The Joseph and his amazing Technicolor dreamcoat" was Webber's first musical and the signature song "Any dream will do" is performed here by Donny Osmond, who also appeared in the video version. I find his rendition even better than London's Jason Donovan, since Donny isn't strictly bound by the notes and so sings it more casually. A wonderful pop piece.
6."Memory" from "Cats" is probably the most famous of all Webber's songs, recorded by numerous artists. This version is sung by Betty Buckley, who was Broadway's Grizabella. Although Betty's performance can't be considered bad, I prefer Elaine Paige, who sung the song first, in the London production. Elaine has a note of sorrow in her at times husky voice, which I found very intriguing. Her performance can be considered definite, as heard on "Cats" DVD or in her latest two-disc compilation, "Centre stage: The very best of Elaine Paige", issued in May 2004. Still, those who prefer Ms. Buckley or who saw her on stage in this role won't be disappointed.
7. "Pie Jesu" is the best known song from Webber's "Requiem", written in 1985 to commemorate the death of his father. I'm not too keen on the version included here, performed by Charlotte Church, because her voice isn't as pretty as Sarah Brightman's on the original recording and the tempo is somewhat faster here.
8. "Don't cry for me Argentina" is among my all-time Lloyd Webber's favourites. I like all the ladies who performed "Evita" on the stage and on the screen (Julie Covington, Elaine Paige, Patti LuPone and Madonna), but on this disc is the version I am most satisfied with, since it is sung by Patti LuPone. Ms. LuPone has a very powerful voice with an amazing range and she deserved her Tony Award for this role. She was able to sound both vulnerable and decisive while singing this, whereas the other leading ladies emphasized one or the other in their interpretation. Mandy Patinkin's "Oh what a circus" is not the best, the orchestration is a little bit weak and his voice sounds thin to me. David Essex on the London cast recording is more suitable.
9. "Aspects of love" boast here with its top song, "Love changes everything", performed wonderfully by Michael Ball. It was his #1 hit and is probably one of the most beautiful love anthems ever written.
10. Three songs come from "Whistle down the wind". The studio release of the same title is one of the reasons I bought this compilation, although I already have the European one. It is performed by Sarah Brightman with Lloyd Webber playing the piano and a symphonic orchestra who nicely takes the lead of the main melody. Sarah voice is angelic; she sings it like a little bird. Very charming. Boyzone's "No matter what" was a huge pop hit in the charts. Again, we have a song with the suitable orchestrations and vocals. And lastly, Tom Jones' deep voice in combination with the back vocals of "The Sounds of Blackness" gives a rocking rendition of the church hymn "The vaults of heaven". It can't be found on the European version and Tom's voice shows it hasn't aged. Way to go.
11. For the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Webber wrote, together with his long-time lyricist Don Black, this last song, "Amigos para siempre or Friends for life". It's a nice duet between Sarah Brightman and Jose Carreras, their voices sore when bound together. The melody itself is neat, especially when the orchestra takes the lead.
Besides the fact that some of the performers here were not the best for my taste, there is also the fact that some of Lloyd Webber's shows are omitted in this version, most notably, "Tell me on a Sunday". Also, unlike its European counterpart, this compilation isn't aligned chronologically, so we have 1970 Superstar being the first song, 1993 Sunset Blvd comes the second, followed by The Phantom from 1986 and so on. None the less, this CD is excellent as an introduction to Lloyd Webber's music and one can continue with his cast recordings from there. It's also very handy as a single disc compilation for the American fans.
Super good CD.......2004-12-31
The songs on this CD are great. If you also play piano, the book of the same title goes perfectly with the CD. You can following along with the music and learn the songs on the piano.

This Is Just Really Great Music.......2007-03-30
This CD is probably one of the best of the NOW series because it features some really good songs. Here's a track-by-track review:
1. Gwen Stefani-Hollaback Girl: This is an okay hook, but that "bananas"
part is weird and the bleeping gets annoying. It was overplayed. B-
2. Will Smith-Switch: Nice to see Will make a comeback and this is the
perfect comeback single, with a terrific hook. A-
3. Amerie-1 Thing: The beat is the only thing that saves this otherwise
lackluster Amerie tune. C+
4. Ciara feat. Ludacris-Oh: This was overplayed, but Luda is awesome and
the hook is better than the one on "Goodies". B
5. Bobby Valentino-Slow Down: I'm not much for ballads, but this is an
okay song, pretty average at best. C
6. Eminem-Mockingbird: I like Eminem's slower songs and this is pretty good. The lyrics are very touching. A
7. Brooke Valentine-Girlfight: This was overplayed, but it has a good hook. Lil Jon is annoying, though. B
8. Destiny's Child-Girl: This is better than "Cater 2 U", but not
"Soldier". It's an okay song(for Destiny's Child). C
9. Shakira-La Tortura: Shakira's voice bothers me, but the beat is okay,
I guess. A little simplistic. So-so. B-
10. Baby Bash feat. Akon-Baby I'm Back: Some of this guy's other material
is alright, but this is just a smug, stupid song. C-
11. Frankie J-How To Deal: I don't like ballads and I hate this. F
12. John Legend-Ordinary People: This is an okay song, since it has
meaningful lyrics and the piano is good. B+
13. Anna Nalick-Breathe(2 AM): This is an okay song. That's all I can really say about it. B-
14. Keith Urban-Making Memories Of Us: I hate wuss country. F
15. Backstreet Boys-Incomplete: The beginning hinted at something better, but this just evolved into a sapfest. D
16. 3 Doors Down-Let Me Go: This is an okay rock song. A little whiney, but what 3 Doors Down song isn't? A-
17. Relient K-Be My Escape: A little bad, but I'll still give it a decent
rating. B
18. The Killers-Mr. Brightside: I really like this song a lot. It has a good new wave beat. A
19. Coldplay-Speed Of Sound: Okay, this was overplayed, but I still like it a lot because it's a good Coldplay song. A+
20. Gorillaz-Feel Good Inc.: Another of my favourites. This song is just plain addictive. A+
Overall, this is one of the better NOW entries and if you're going to invest your money into just one of these CDs, I would choose this.
Almost Perfect.......2006-12-26
Well, I thought that this CD is going to be perfect for my cousin with a CD player for christmas. Everything about it was perfect but one thing. After she opened it we thought we should test it to see if the CD player worked. The CD player did work but while we where listining to it I noticed that this is a kids CD and it was a little bad for children because it was unapproriate for childeren. I think it sould be for an older age. But it is still a great CD!
Vol. 19.......2006-07-19
Backstreet returns and no one cares, that's probably due to the fact that 'Incomplete' is kinda crappy. Pop music has evolved boys, so you can't put out a track that sounds like it was ripped from your debut b-sides! Anyways, that said there are some other tracks here to beware of. When I first heard 'How To Deal' by Frankie J. I really liked it and then I realized it was because I recognized the beat...it's the same beat to 'Burn' by Usher and I was like, what a loser...He has to steel the beats from a popular song that was JUST released! Anyways, 'Hollaback Girl' is just stupid, and yes it's edited anyways so don't bother. Not a fan of 'Switch', Will should stick to acting, he's good at that.
Highlights include Brooke Valentine's 'Girlfight' which takes the crown for best track here...love it and can't ever get enough of it. As with Amerie's '1 Thing' which is also a great track, probably her best. Dig Ciara's 'Oh' but could live without Eminem's 'Mockingbird'...he's lost a lot since '8 Mile'.
Destiny's Child suffer, or cause us to suffer, but Shakira shows us how it's done and gives us a great song here. Akon saves Baby Bash from serving up another crappy song, and yes, other than Akons vocals this song is crappy, but I like his voice so I'll listen to it. John Legend does brilliantly yet again with 'Ordinary People'. The piano is beautiful and the lyrics are so heartfelt and original...I love it.
I really like Anna Nalick's 'Breathe'...it's soft and calm and different so that's welcome. The Killers and Coldplay deliver good songs, Coldplay's isn't perfect but it's good. Gorillaz also deliver here, 'Feel Good Inc.' is a great song and serves as a perfect closing track for the album. All in all it's good, falters a bit but still a decent offering and a nice addition to your growing CD collection.

This cd is cool, but I hate how they changed the first song like that.

Smartly programmed and laden with hits from the first half of 2001, the seventh entry in the Now compilation series is a more-than-agreeable, summer-party soundtrack. Moving from up-tempo pop/R&B to various stripes of hip-hop (including a snapping Neptunes remix of Backstreet Boys'"The Call") to three draggy ballads you can easily program out to reminders from Aerosmith, Lifehouse, Evan and Jaron, and American Hi-Fi that guitars still exist, this disc is one of the strongest Nows yet. With the high-quality likes of "Jaded," Janet Jackson's "All for You," Nelly's "Ride wit Me!" (heavily edited for language), and Mystikal's "Danger (Been So Long)" on tap, even Jennifer Lopez sounds pretty good as the beats power by. Does the style-by-style sequencing effectively segregate genres, particularly by placing the rock stuff at disc's end? It's more likely that the appearance of all these tunes in one place demonstrates that the notion of pop as a big tent isn't dead yet. --Rickey Wright

Now 7.......2007-02-15
1.Survivor-ultimate girl-power song! This song is on repeat. Perfect song to dedicate to your ex. Also a perfect song to play if you've given up on something--this song gives you encouragement to try again. 5/5
2.All For You-gets annoying but still good. 3/5
3.Baby Come On Over-I prefer 'Don't Need You to Tell Me I'm Pretty' but this song will do. 3/5
4.In My Pocket-I love Mandy Moore and this song! Love the beat, love the lyrics, love everything. 5/5
5.Play-gets annoying but still good. 3/5
6.The Call-ugh! Love the BSB but they are not rap song people! 0/5
7.Playas' Gon' Play-this song may not make sense to some people but it makes sense to me. Just listen. 4/5
8.Ride Wit Me-too much censoring but good! 3/5
9.Danger-ugh! Not my type of music! 0/5
10.Fiesta-ugh! Again, not my type of music! 0/5
11.Let Me Blow Your Mind-ugh! Again, not my type of music! 0/5
12.What Would You Do-this song is on repeat! I don't like how it's censored though. No part should be censored. This song talks about serious issues which most songs these days don't. This song is awesome! It's sad; it's based on a true story! 5/5
13.Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know-I HATE BRITNEY SPEARS but surprisingly, I like this song! Girls can relate! 3/5
14.This I Promise You-OMG! My mom and I love this song! This song is so beautiful! 5/5
15.Never Had A Dream Come True-I love this song! I can relate to it. 5/5
16.Hanging By A Moment-Jason Wade says this song is about his parents divorce. This is a good song to play if you're depressed--it helps. Even if you're not depressed it rocks! 5/5
17.Jaded-I like this song. This song gets annoying after a while. 4/5
18.From My Head to My Heart-OMG! Evan and Jaron rock! I love this song! They kept making hit after hit! 5/5
19.Flavor of the Weak-awesome song! I only heard this song on the radio once but I love it! 5/5
Anyways, get this CD! IT ROCKS! Play it at a party and you'll be dancing all night!
Vol. 7.......2006-07-18
Now we're getting somewhere...As you may already know from my previous reviews of the 'Now!' series, I feel that it's a nice way to remember the yesteryears, but as we roll into 'Now! 7' we're getting a glimpse of the not so distant past, songs that we may still hear from time to time on the radio and such. Songs like 'Ride Wit Me' or 'Survivor', Mistikal's brilliant anthum 'Danger' (which I just heard on the radio last night), 'Let Me Blow Ya Mind' and Lifehouse's biggest hit 'Hanging by a Moment' are all heard on the radio to this day.
Laced though with not so common hits, 'Now! 7' still has something to offer to those who are looking for a blast from the past. Samantha Mumba (where is she now) delivers a song we can all remember tearing up the airwaves ('Baby Come on Over') and Mandy Moore gives us another great track with 'In my Pocket' which I don't remember as well as some of the other tracks here.
Never was a fan of Janet's 'All for You' or J. Lo's 'Play', heck, or even Destiny's Child's 'Survivor', but they all have their place in the memory of yesterday right. I actually like 'The Call' and this remix by The Neptunes is off the hook. There is some ballads that maybe should have been avoided, most notably Britney's 'Don't Let me be the Last to Know' and S Club 7's 'Never had a Dream Come True' which is just irritatingly cliche. I always liked N'Sync's 'This I Promise You' but even that may have been beter suited for another CD.
The real gem here though is City High's 'What Would You Do?' which is a song I almost forgot about. It was such a good song back in the day, and even now, listening to it for what feels like the first time I'm left with the same feeling. Great song, great sound and great message.
Yes, I agree that the constant editing of the songs is annoying...I just really with they'd pick songs that don't have to be edited, but I doubt they ever will. These rap songs (like the awful crap R. Kelly and Jay-Z delivered) is too popular with today's generation for them to get avoided when putting together these CD's. Oh well, it's something we all have to deal with to get what we want, if this is indeed what you want.

#1 Way To Keep Cool.......2005-03-03
The Summer of 2001 was hot, hazy and dry; it was near impossible to cool down. Thankfully, Sony/Universal/EMI/Zomba released "NOW 7", the #1 way to keep cool during the heat. 2001 was a great year for music from the start on January 1st, and this album does a perfect job of gathering up the best tracks from the first half of the year. The wonderful balance of pop, rock, R&B and rap creates a cool vibe which flows through out the album. The nineteen amazing tracks:
(1) Destiny's Child "Survivor" A-. It may have been overplayed, but it still remains a great modern R&B track. Most distinguishing is that the song is about joyfully moving on. Listener's respond to the song because it offers a positive attitude. It also helps that the beat is terribly addictive, and I'm sure that it's popularity was also helped by the fact that the TV show of the same name was popular at the time as well.
(2) Janet Jackson "All For You" A-. Shows what a dance song is supposed to be, and showcases some of Janet's best work. There isn't too much substance, yet the beat a production are so infectious that you get caught up in it. Janet's vioce sounds as smooth as ever, and adds a nice sexy undertone.
(3) Samantha Mumba "Baby, Come Over (This Is Our Night)" B. Her standard material is compenstated by the urgency in her voice. However she achives it, the song sounds very convincing and even carries some depth. Not a great pop song by any means, but a pretty fun one.
(4) Mandy Moore "In My Pocket" A. From the start we think that this will be your standard pop song, yet it blooms with so much dimension and hidden feelings. The mesmerizing beat engulfs the listener and the lyrics create some mysterious images. This is Mandy Moore at her best.
(5) Jennifer Lopez "Play" B+. Sheds the emotion of "I'm Real" and "Ain't It Funny"; leaving a playful dance single left. J. Lo doesn't settle for average material though, as this is a catchy, clever and original track about her wanting to hear her favorite dance song. Fiery beats make this impossible to resist.
(6) Backsteet Boys "The Call" (Neptunes Remix w/ Rap) A. While it may feel like a strange remix at first; the song does grow on you. Cheating has always been a common theme in music, but this enters a new area with it's modern edge. The lyrics create a true dilemma, while the Neptunes lace them with their quircky beats and rhymes.
(7) 3LW "Playas Gon' Play" B. 3LW doesn't break much new ground; as they don't seem to stand out from the pop crowd. Still, this contains a nice idea with some intelligent writing that rings true. Pop and hip-hop are easily mixed, but the mixture here doesn't pick up flair like it should.
(8) Nelly feat. City Spud "Ride Wit Me" A. A perfect showcase for why Nelly is the best new rapper pf the 2000s. Jason "Jay-E" Eppereson production catchy, bouncy and highy enjoyable. Strange how the song is both "gangsta" and "old school" at the same time. This is hands down a great rap song.
(9) Mystikal feat. Nivea "Danger (Been So Long)" A. Mystikal's usually unappealing voice somehow works here. Maybe it's not really his voice; it could be Nivea's mesmerizing voice, or the striking beat that drive it. I don't even know what this is about, yet I can't help but get dragged into the fun.
(10) R. Kelly feat. Jay-Z and Boo & Gotti "Fiesta Remix" B. Not bad a bad song, just not a satisfiing one. For R. Kelly, it's nowhere near as deep as "I Wish", or as cool as "Thoia Thoing". Jay-Z isn't given much to do and Boo & Gotti are disposible. Fun while it last, then utterly forgetable.
(11) Eve feat. Gwen Stefani "Let Me Blow Ya Mind" A-. One of Eve's best songs ever. Functions in as both a pop and rap song; mainly because Eve and Gwen blend so well together. In general, Dr. Dre and Scott Storch's production make this a stylish little charm of a single.
(12) City High "What Would You Do" A. Less than three minutes long, yet it tell's a striking story with alot of deoth and enotion. Yes, it's cold and startles the listener, but that's the whole intention. Definetly a nice change of pace from most rap songs.
(13) Britney Spears "Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know" B+. The changes that can occur when she drops the "naughty image". True emotion can be found in this pop ballad; the lyrics display true urgency and feelings. Tragedy this didnt find as much success as the disasterous "Oops!...I Did It Again".
(14) *N Sync "This I Promise You" A-. A traditional pop that is done to pefection. The boys never have to try too hard, and just let everything develop natrually. By the end, we see exactly how this beautiful song slowly formed. Also serves as a flip-side to "Bye Bye Bye" and "It's Gonna Be Me".
(15) S Club 7 "Never Had A Dream Come True" A. This usually disposable group (from the awful TV show) somehow hits a home run here. Words that describe this song: deep, emotional, powerful, heartfelt, honest and beautiful. The content is so touching that anyone can relate to it. This is a small pop treasue.
(16) Lifehouse "Hanging By A Moment" A-. They never quite equaled it afterwards, but this is a terrific rock song. It's intelligent, catchy and heartfelt. Falls into the same league as the best work by the Goo Goo Dolls and Matchbox Twenty. In fact, it did go on to become Billboard's #1 song of 2001.
(17) Aerosmith "Jaded" A. One of the best songs the group has ever recorded; and that's no small accomplishment. Steve Tyler's voice delivers the lyrics with true emotion; all set to the piercing guitar beats. This is great rock track which packs quite a punch during its running time.
(18) Evan and Jaron "From My Head To My Heart" B+. It's just as good as "Crazy For This Girl", and that was well done. The two boys have a nice relaxed feel and carry true feeling in their lyrics. Quite refreshing to hear a good natured pop tune these days.
(19) American Hi-Fi "Flavor Of The Weak" A. This workls as well as it does because of it's bluntness. There is a story to be told in it's lyrics, and the song tell's that story straight; holding nothing back. Great summer track that demonstates hard rock at its finest.
Bottom Line: ****. As compilations albums are a dime-a-dozen these days; "NOW" always shows how it should be done. They even top themselves in putting together this masterpiece. It may have been the perfect album for Summer 2001, but it happens to be a great album for any season, of any year. THIS is an album!

This volume of the chart-survey series is its best yet, offering stellar examples of nearly every subgenre it approaches. Interestingly, the platinum machine's eighth outing is also its most subtle (the take-your-time sultriness of Aaliyah's "Rock the Boat," Usher's "U Got It Bad") and teasingly offbeat (Gorillaz's dub-wise sleeper "Clint Eastwood," the Wiseguys' noise-hop "Start the Commotion") moments. Whether this indicates a trend toward the return of a higher-quality singles chart has yet to be determined, but save for a small handful of crummily derivative nontunes from Jessica Simpson, Fuel, and 3 Doors Down, the music here makes a good case for itself. Could a broadening definition of what's mainstream be fomenting? Caveats: 'N Sync's "Pop" is included in a remix that bleeds the record of some of its novelty, while Jennifer Lopez's "I'm Real" appears without the Ja Rule rap that helped lift it to bestseller status. --Rickey Wright

Now 8.......2007-02-15
Overall, a definate great CD. I love various artist compliations. You get a little more variety than your average CD. Heres my opinion:
1. Destiny's Child, "Bootylicious": Good song, a little pointless...but catchy and easy to dance to. I don't really like the lyrics...kinda stupid. But it's good for what it is-- a dance song. I give it 3/5
2.*NSYNC, "Pop": Classic pop song. Not my favourite...but I understand why they included it. It WAS a pretty big hit for them. And I admit, it's a cute song. 4/5
3. Jennifer Lopez, "I'm Real": Doesn't quite live up to a few of her other hits. In my opinion, they should have used the Remix with Ja Rule. It was a bigger hit and a little catchier. But not a bad song overall. 2/5
4. Joe, "Stutter": Would be MUCH better with out the Mystikal Rap part. But its a nice R&B tune..you have to be in the right mood. Its one of those song that plays the chorus over..and over...and over..and over. Not bad though. I enjoy it from time to time. 4/5
5. Janet, "Someone To Call My Lover": Janet, as always has come through. Shes an amazing performer..and although this song was overplayed...it's great. Can't get enough of it. 5/5
6. Christina Millian, "Am To Pm": Theres was a lot of hype over this song. And its not a BAD song...but I'm not to into. I'm just not feeling it...it's not even that catchy. I think she needs a little more following. 2/5
7. Jessica Simpson, 'A Little Bit": One of my favourites. Didn't get nearly the airplay it deserved..but wonderful pop song. Catchy, good lyrics, nice beat, easy to dance to. Love it. 5/5
8. Mandy Moore, 'Crush": Love this one as well. I love Mandy, shes one of my favourite female vocalist (next to Nina Gordon of course). Not much to say about her....she's great. Good song for her vocal range..most people dont find it catchy, so they don't fully take in the whole effect. But very sweet song. 5/5
9.Aaliyah, "Rock The Boat": Good tribute to Aaliyah. But I dont like the song. It was a big hit. And its not a good song at all. It was good of them to put it on here though...I usually skip over it though. 1/5
10.Usher, "U Got It Bad": Wonderful. Definately the best ballad on this CD. It's a huge hit for him..and he works VERY well with ballads. I've never been a big fan of Usher. But you gotta love this song. Adorable lyrics and good beat. 5/5
11. Backstreet Boys "More Than That": Ehh... Its Backstreet Boys...they're okay. This is not one of their better songs. It's not very catchy...a little strained vocally. I personally think they work better with upbeat songs...but it's not a BAD song. It's good for what it is. 3/5
12. Gorillaz "Clint Eastwood": Am I the only person who doesnt get the title? Hmm..anyway..most people seem to think this song is "weird" but I like it. I admit, it took a little while to get used to..but it definatly grows on you. Love the harmonica. 4/5
13. Wiseguys/Greg Nice "Start The Commotion": Good dance song. Good background music as well. It' a cute song, a little slow lyrically, but great beat. 4/5
14.JiveJones "Me Myself and I" - I, personally, had never heard of this guy before. But GREAT song. Can't believe it didn't get more airplay. A little unpolished...but once you get used to it...you'll love it. 4/5
15. Smash Mouth "I'm A Believer"- Ugh. This is a Monkees song. Smash Mouth didn't deliver it quite as well..but it is catchy. I admit, it does make me smile though. 2/5
16. Sum 41 "Fat Lip": Love it. Upbeat. Great dance Song. Cant get enough of it. The best on the album. 5/5
17. blink-182 "The Rock Show": Overplayed. But it's definatly better than most of Blink's stuff. It's great until you get sick of it. 5/5
18. Fuel "Bad Day": A lot of people like this song. I hate it. It's annoying and depressing. 0/5
19. 3 Doors Down "Be Like That": One of the best lyrical songs on here. I love it...great for relaxation and inspiration. I could listen to it over and over. Great song. 5/5
20. U2 Walk On: This wansn't even a hit. But beautiful song and good ending. Doesn't quite live up to Joshua Tree though..and that threw me off. 4/5
Vol. 8.......2006-07-18
Okay, here we have a near perfect 'Now!' CD, packed full of songs that everyone can enjoy, whether it's public knowledge or a complete guilty pleasure like N'Sync's 'Pop' is for me. Either way, this is a pretty good comp. album to boot. Diva's Destiny's Child open things with their campy single 'Bootylicious' which has become synonimous with Beyonce at this point in time, and the song itself, while holding no real merrit, is fun and enjoyable if not to sing along with at least to laugh at. Latina superwoman Jennifer Lopez gives is 'I'm Real', but not the version we're all used to, this is the cleaned up remix version that doesn't include Ja Rule and doesn't even sport the same lyrics and or beats...regardless I still love this song and think it was a smart choice on the part of the 'Now!' people to just place a song they didn't have to edit on the album instead of ticking us all off again with yet another botched song.
Joe and Mistikal both delive on 'Stutter' which was one of my favorite jams back in the day, as was 'Am to Pm' by miss Christina Milian, who never hit it big with this song and actually took another couple years to drop a full length album, shocker! Anyways, there's pop princess's Mandy Moore and Jessica Simpson who both turn out decent songs here, Simpson in her pre-annoyance stage. It's funny how this girl FORGOT how to sing as her head got bigger.
The real gems here are in the form of The Gorillaz who give us the best song of the year with 'Clint Eastwood' which is all but brilliant in every way. I remember first hearing this song and thinking it was gold...you know 'money in the bank!' There's also Sum 41 who gave us one of the biggest songs of the summer with 'Fat Lip' and these guys keep churning out the hits, as does Fuel who delivers full force on 'Bad Day' and continue to rock hard and to satisfaction.
Backstreet Boys fizzle as does 3 Doors Down (mostly since 'Be Like That' was so over played, and still is so overplayed) while U2 soars with 'Walk On' which is beautiful and all together brilliant. Janet is annoying, never liked the song and never will, Usher is washed up and Smash Mouth is just plain over...they really need to just go away. Is it just me or does everything they put out sound the same. Never heard the Jive Jones song, but for some reason I can stomach it, as can I the Wiseguys 'Start the Commotion' even if it is a little forced.
All in all it's not perfect but yet another great effort on the part of 'Now!'
Now 8; get it Now.......2005-03-30
This is the only Now C.D. I've found so far that has had enough songs I like on it for me to buy it. The song I recommend most on this C.D. is track #12 (Clint Eastwood), which has an incredibly good lyrical flow and a simple yet perfect piano accompaniment in the background. There is also the energetic "Fat Lip" from Sum 41, which has many different types of music jammed in one (there is an almost rap-like jam in some sections, a jog-paced section, a soft part near the end, and of course the fast-paced main chorus). Aside from these songs, I would also recommend "Start the Commotion": a song that samples horn blares, bass guitars, 60's singers, an organ, and much more into an entertaining blend. "Me Myself & I" is also pretty good for its interesting noise accompaniments and bouncing melody, and Smash Mouth's rendition of "I'm a Believer" turns an enjoyable Oldie into a still enjoyable modern version with a catchy surf music beat.
It's Hard To H8 "NOW 8".......2005-01-29
"NOW 8" is a good album that isn't the most memorable in the popular series, yet for some reason the album bears a special meaning to me. Maybe it was becuase my life had gone through some changes and it was the 1st edition after the changes. That aside, the album contains many great singles including 2 of the 10 Best Songs of 2001 ('N Sync's "Pop" and Usher's "U Got It Bad"). And the album is very skimpy on hip-hop/rap, especially when compared to "NOW 7".
(1) Destiny's Child "Bootylicious" A-. This is a fiery, zesty, stormin' R&B dance track that anounces itself with fury. There is a true zip in it's club ready beat; one that never let's down. Has all the qualities that made "Survivor" so good, then takes it to the next level. Hard to belive that this song entered a word into Webster's Dictionary.
(2) *N Sync "Pop" A. Just a flashy as the group's previous dance tracks, yet it contains purpose and meaning. Justin's passionetly declarative lyrics set to BT's clubbed up beat make this song flow with terrific zip. Even the all insturmental part helps to make this one of the best pop songs ever recorded.
(3) Jennifer Lopez "I'm Real" A. Yes, this is the original version WITHOUT Ja Rule, but it's just as good as the remix. As a passionate pop song (verses the hip-hop remix) this heartfelt, creative and rather addictive. J. Lo doesn't try too hard a finds a wonderful more relaxed tone that works.
(4) Joe feat. Mystikal "Stutter" (Double Take Remix) B. A little old for "NOW 8" (Spring 2001), but that's OK. Content wise the song has a clever premise and intelligent lyrics that are not given full impact in their delivery. Joe's voice doesn't seem as strong in during some sections and Mystikal, with his irritating voice, is not a very good rapper.
(5) Janet Jackson "Someone To Call My Lover" A-. If nothing else this is a good old fashioned "American road song". It also happens to be catchy and easing with a slick production. This is the exact type of work that has made Janet a highly independent and invalueable female recording star.
(6) Christina Milian "AM to PM" A. Fact: Christina was NOT a new artist in 2004, but was new in 2001. That said, this is a highly entertaining dance track with alot of fire and zest. I have no idea why this track didn't find a large audince, it's almost in the same league as the massive "Lady Marmalade" remake.
(7) Jessica Simpson "A Little Bit" B-. A listenable pop tune, but then what? Seems a little too safe and standard (even for her) in the cutting edge world of pop music. I also can't listen to it without thinking about those damn Bally Total Fitness ads!
(8) Mandy Moore "Crush" A-. Mandy has had to struggle for suc cess against Spears and Aguilera, despite the fact that she often outstages them. Here she takes worn out material and re-vamps it through her heartfelt voice that seems honest. A small treasure that's miles different from "In My Pocket".
(9) Aaliyah "Rock The Boat" B+. Her tragic death made the inclusion of this inevitable, but that's OK because it is a very good song. Boasting a polished contemporary R&B vibe, the song gets under the skin with her lighthearted voice. It just gets a tad too long by the end, but it's not that noticable.
(10) Usher "U Got It Bad" A+. "Confessions" is his masterpiece album, but this is his greatest single. A classic piece of R&B with a modern untertone that gets to the heart. As the songb says; "if you're touched by the words in the song, then maybe u got it bad." Well, it's impossible not to be touched by this heartbreaking song.
(11) Backstreet Boys "More Than That" B+. A standard Backstreet Boys ballad that has it's undeniable charms. As always it sounds heartfelt in a classic way and wisely keeps a reasonable length as well. The 3rd verse especially gets under the skin.
(12) Gorillaz "Clint Eastwood" A-. Finally, a clever balance between hip-hop and techno. At the bare minimum, the song is original and creative, and it also contains some catchy lyrics with an inventive tune (listen closely, and you'll see how the title fits in). Rap laced with techno? Maybe Jay-Z and P. Diddy are taking notes.
(13) Wiseguys feat. Greg Nice "Start The Commotion" B-. Not a hit on any charts, but a hit from a Honda commerecial (it still counts as a hit). The song doesn't wear out it's welcome do to it's very short length, and is filled with manic energy. But it doesn't really amount to anything too memorable.
(14) JIVEjones "Me, Myself & I" B-. A promotional hit for an artist who never really took off. It isn't a remake of the 1989 De La Soul classic, but a somewhat catchy and quirky old school rap. The song's bizzareness is not beneficial, as it detracts from the listenability.
(15) Smash Mouth "I'm A Believer" C. Smash Mouth a a pretty good pop/rock group, but even they don't deliver the goods with this remake. I'm sure exactly why, but it seems to be lacking the certain charm that made the original version such a huge hit.
(16) Sum 41 "Fat Lip" A. A catchy, coolhard rock track filled with rapid energy. It doesn't break any new ground material wise, but is blooming with style and excitment. A refreshing, higly entertaining rock song.
(17) blink-182 "The Rock Show" A-. Yet again, the boys from blink-182 deliver a catchy, party built hard rock song with a teenage undertone to it. It should be boing that they do the same style over and over, but they're so damn good at what they do.
(18) Fuel "Bad Day" B. The lyrics have real meaning conveyed through some powerful images, yet I think the song lacks the energy we come to expect from Fuel. It could have been a bit longer to expand upon it's subject matter.
(19) 3 Doors Down "Be Like That" C. Meaningful lyrics are given no life by the group's lifeless vocal style. It just grows redundant by the end and becomes boring. Wonder what the song would be like with more excitement.
(20) U2 "Walk On" C+. "All That You Can't Leave Behind" is a great album with three great singles. This is not one of them. The song has meaning and a good purpose, but it gets SO dragged out that it looses everything it achived. There is something here, but it gets lost along the way.
Bottom Line: ***. A flawed album, yet the good singles outweigh the bad ones; thus I can recomend it. I would still like to see some more rap songs here; like Nelly's "#1", OutKast' "Ms. Jackson", Ludacris' "Southern Hospitality" and Crazy Town's "Butterfly". Not great, but a worthy entry in a great series.
NOTE: The album is respectfully dedicated to the late Aaliyah, who tragically died in a plane crash on August 25th, 2001.
Hot Summer of 2001 Packed Into One CD!.......2004-11-07
The Now series has been around since the Spice Girls and is still going strong. On Now 8, many highlights from the summer of '01 are jammed onto one disc for your listening pleasure! Thank God for Now 8!
Bootylicious (10/10) - The hottest track on the CD. Destiny's Child is the best and will always be the best!
Pop (10/10) - One of NSYNC's hottest songs. This futuristic sounding track is one of the best cuts ever.
I'm Real (7/10) - The remix is way better but this one will do. J. Lo needs to stop lying to herself because she is not real. But this song is really good.
Stutter [Remix] f/ Mystikal (8/10) - The beat is sick but Mystikal's rap is totally whack and messed the flow of the song up.
Someone To Call My Lover (10/10) - Nice, slower Janet song. Just knowing that it's Janet makes the song a hit. Janet is one of the greatest performers and this song is one of her many hits.
AM to PM (10/10) - Christina Milian's hyped up club song. This song makes me want to dance all night long. I could put this on repeat all day.
A Little Bit (4/10) - Jessica Simpson has many good songs, but this isn't one of them. This song is terribly written and the beat isn't good enough to dance to. She gets a four because the chorus is so catchy and makes the song better than what it is.
Crush (0/10) - This song is really whack. Mandy Moore has better hits such as "In My Pocket" and "Candy". This song should have never been made. I always skip over this song.
Rock The Boat (10/10) - One of the best songs by the legendary Aaliyah. This song is so special to me because it has a nice beat, sexy lyrics, and it was also the last video Aaliyah ever shot before she was killed. This song will forever be close to me in my heart.
U Got It Bad (10/10) - The summer jam that everybody loved. Usher was barely trying to be noticed although now he is an international name. This song is really nice and sexy.
More Than That (2/10) - I don't like this song. That's all I have to say.
Clint Eastwood (8/10) - Although I'm not a big fan of rock/pop, this song is really good. This song was super famous.
Start The Commotion (3/10) - Boring and doesn't make any sense. I don't even remember hearing this song on the radio or even on TV.
Me, Myself & I (1/10) - Not to be confused with the Beyoncé hit song, this pop/rock song sucks and should have never been made.
I'm A Believer (3/10) - This song may have been good in Shrek, but without the movie it's boring and stupid.
Fat Lip (0/10) - Hate Sum 41. Hate This Song.
The Rock Show (0/10) - Urgh, will the torture ever stop?
Bad Day - Never really listen to it.
Be Like That - Never really listen to it.
Walk On - Never really listen to it.
2/3 of the album are worth listening to. The end are just boring rock songs so I would suggest you buy this album if the beginning 2/3 suit your musical taste.

Vol. 15.......2006-07-19
Another day, another 'Now!'...and 'Now! 15' sports some decent tracks here, starting with No Doubt's 'It's My Life' which isn't my favorite No Doubt song, not by a long shot, but it's No Doubt and they rarly put out anything you need to avoid. Next up on the plate is 'Toxic' by Britney and I don't really need to say anything more than, whether you love or hate her, 'Toxic' is one of the most infectious songs I've ever heard. I haven't met one person who doesn't like this song. Sarah Connor gives us 'Bounce' which was kind of a sleeper. I mean, I had heard the song a bunch of times but never knew who sang it, and sadly I didn't care to find out. Not that it's a bad song, just not that memerable. Jessica Simpson also shows her face here with one of the most annoying songs ever...'With You'...I don't know I just hate her.
Beyonce also fails to deliver, for 'Me, Myself & I' was one of the only songs off 'Dangerously In Love' that I hated. It kind of floors me that they included Eamon's track, even though it was such a huge hit. It's just one of those songs I think totally loses everything with half the words taken out.
For the most part the rap here is strong...Luda delivering on 'Stand Up' and he also lends his talents to Chingy's 'Holidae In' but it's Westside Connections 'Gangsta Nation' featuring Nate Dogg that takes the crown as best track on the album. It's smooth vocals and tight beats make it a gem amoungst the rest. Nick Cannon and Baby Bash serve up mediocre tracks here, Nick Cannon still outshining Baby Bash (I can't stand this guy), and Black Eyed Peas pull off o
