Piss & Vinegar: The Songs Of Graham Parker

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Maybe Graham Parker doesn't appeal to the masses, but he does appeal to a number of musicians who admire his unfaltering combination of roots, craft and anger. 20 such acts, almost all of them from the New York-New Jersey club scene, pay tribute to the misanthrope here. The biggest names involved are the Health and Happiness Show, the Figgs, Frank Black of the Pixies and Pat DiNizio of the Smithereens, but everyone involved has the good sense to neither slavishly copy the originals nor to arrogantly betray the initial intent. Highlights include Bill Kelly's Tom Petty-ish version of "Pourin' It All Out" and Richard Lloyd's guitar work on "Stupefaction." --Geoffrey Himes

4 out of 5 stars quite a statement.......2002-05-25

Wow, DVOA is really something else. The electronic music on disc 1 feels very versatile. The 2nd disc here, the ambient one, is composed predominantly of neverending drones. & they dissonate. This music is probably for rain.

5 out of 5 stars this one has it all.......2001-12-11

PISS FROND is an excellent starting point for anyone who is curious about D.V.O.A. fans of techno, goth, structured songwriting, dance music, drone, ambient, noise...will surely find something to like on this 2 cd set. cd 1 features drums and guitars, strings, verses and choruses, and even some singing; while the 2nd has two outstanding and beautiful drone pieces, as well as some material more akin to the previous albums. PISS FROND is deinitely a change, but a welcome one.

5 out of 5 stars A new ambient techno niche.......2000-05-20

Spybey's work, whether solo or with the boys from Download, has always possessed a unique, frenetic light. He rises above his contemporaries to achieve something that is at once totally original and infinitely intrigueing, and he does so with Piss Frond, and does so perfectly. If I were to choose something with which to contrast his work, it would be the On Land era of Brian Eno. Though, even that is something of an invalid comparison, not only due to the fact that one disc is techno-oriented rather than ambient, but also that the intended target of the comparison, the ambient disc, is much more surreal. Not to downplay the originator of the genre, but unlike Eno, who intends to take you somewhere with his music, Spybey just kind of snatches you off the ground and places you in a euphoric limbo. The techno-oriented half of the album is innovative and powerful in this respect as well, it should be noted, with its dizzying showers of sounds and brooding, earth-toned darkness. Mark has outdone himself. I anxiously await what he will release next.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely a new turn for DVOA........1999-02-03

When I first picked it up this I thought it was the best DVOA I'd heard; it seems that Spybey has decided to integrate a more tangible techno element into his work, particularly on disc 1 of the pair, and even some vocals. Although some of my initial enchantment has faded, this is still a very interesting and generally very appealing turn for DVOA, and some of the ambient work on disc 2 is quite stellar.

5 out of 5 stars Piss Drunks- Urine Idiot.......2003-06-12

First thing, the name of this album is brilliant. The songs on here are really good. The lyrics are written well and some have a sense of humor to them. The Piss Drunks are Reynolds, Ellington, Greco, Boulala, Dollin and I think Sumner too, for all you skateboarders out there. This album is genious and so is Alcoholocaust. In my opinion the best song on here is Piss Drunk, and the best song on Alcoholocaust is Vacuum Tube.

    Product Description

Hailing from Boston, Massachusetts, Lenny and the Piss Poor Boys play country & western the way the Clash or the Ramones might have if theyd grown up on Waylon Jennings instead of the New York Dolls. Fronted by singer/guitarist Lenny Lashley (Darkbuster), and rounded out by upright bassist Jon Johnson (Bourbonaires), guitarist/steel guitarist Chris DeBarge (Curses/Speed Devils/Stumbleweeds), and drummer Tommy Long (Dogmatics), the band recorded their eponymous debut album during the summer of 2004 at Basement 247 Studios in Allston. Produced by Chris DeBarge and engineered by Basement 247s Jack Younger, Lenny and the Piss Poor Boys features ten bourbon-soaked tunes including Lonely Days and Whiskey Nights, Cambridgeport Saloon and Two Robbers - as well as a cover of the classic late 70s Lowenbrau beer theme, Heres to Good Friends. Since 2002 Lenny and the Piss Poor Boys have built a devoted following among both country and punk audiences through New England. Finally, with the release of Lenny and the Piss Poor Boys, heres your opportunity to find out why. So pour yourself a shot or four of Jim Beam at 2am, light up a smoke, put on Lenny and the Piss Poor Boys, and think about lost opportunities and broken hearts. That's country music, that's punk rock, and that's Lenny and the Piss Poor Boys.

5 out of 5 stars A Third great album from a great band.......2004-11-06

To start, I can Lick any SOB in the House is one of the hardest working and best performing live acts in America, and they have earned and deserve the name. Don't be put off by the name, they're actually some of the friendliest folks you'll ever meet. People don't see these guys once, they see them once and then come back to every show they play in town. Go see them live.

Menace is their third CD, and as much as I like the first two, the band keeps getting better. They're described in all sorts of ways such as alt-county-rock, southern rock (they're from Portland Oregon but the sound works anyway) I've heard Hill-Billy used in the same sentence with their name, but to me, they're just a great Rock & Roll band. Their Front Man is Mike Damron, and he commands the stage like a fire breathing preacher (OK I' may be exaggerating, but the guy is good at his job). Mike also writes the songs, and the songs are powerful, often political, and always unapologetic and sung with heart. The musicians in the band are all top notch, and as hard working as Mike himself. Mole Harris on Bass, Flapjack Texas on drums (yes he answers to that name), Handsome Jon Burbank on lead guitar--Jon also did a fantastic job producing the CD--, and David Lipkind playing some really good harmonica.

As for the songs on the disc, I listened to Westboro Baptist Church at full volume several times on November 3rd, and it really helped. I could listen to that several times in a row. I had it on headphones here at my desk, and the guys in the band may be happy to know I couldn't help singing along. Not everyone I work with was amused. Sore winners I guess. Rachel Corrie is a great tribute the activist from Olympia Washington of that name who was killed by an Israeli army bulldozer while protesting the destruction of Palestinian homes by said Bulldozer. The album has some great rockers on it like the opening track Gone, Fall Down, and Menace, as well as some ballads like Pauline, Dust & Sun, and Regrets & Greyhound. Everything works, and there's not a song on the disc that isn't great to my ears. Buy this CD, and the go see them live (or the other way around whatever works for you).

You also want to check out their second disc Put Here to Bleed.

Warmed me down to my toes. Made me think of drinking Big Reds in Aruba. Great album. Matt Dolan is a guitar hero. Should be in everyone's collection.....
