80s Alt Rock Classic.......2007-05-07

No regrets about buying this one folks! This album is brilliant from start to finish.I know some people don't like the last three tracks but they definitely beat everything else out there today.Though its not a double album,I would put it on par with Zen Arcade.Mould and Hart really strike a great balance between hardcore punk and alternative pop on this album.Any rock fan should own this album as well as Zen Arcade so go get them if you don't already own them.

a tad more melodic than it's predecessor (the classic "zen arcade"), there is still plenty of guitar mayhem and fists full of aggression here, but songs like "terms of psychic warfare," and "books about ufos," are downright catchy. the latter of the two actually has a glam-rock, new york dolls vibe about it. another great album from husker du. another classic.

Husker Du earned an enormous amount of musical capital with their 1984 album Zen Arcade. Granted, this "sprawling double concept album" may have been a lot to swallow, and the 14-minute instrumental at the end was probably a bit too much. However, most of the disc showcased this Minneapolis trio unleashing their hardcore beast to great effect.

That breakthrough album's follow-up, New Day Rising, saw the band taming and trimming that hardcore beast to equally good effect. Like Zen Arcade, the majority of songs on New Day Rising are under three minutes long. On the latter album, however, the Huskers introduced a pop flavor to their patented sound. (Pop and punk, even hardcore, were never meant to be mutually exclusive, of course.) But don't let words like "taming" and "pop" fool you. Husker Du were never known for their subtlety, and they certainly didn't do any thing to change that on this record. Grant Hart's jackhammer drumming, Bob Mould's buzzsaw guitar, and Greg Norton's lockstep bass are as firmly in place as they ever were. The result is a record that is hummable and explosive, and a fine middle ground - chronologically and stylistically - between Zen Arcade and Flip Your Wig, the follow-up to New Day Rising.

Songwriters Mould and Hart turn in superb performances in terms of both playing and composing. (The closest Norton comes to any credit are the three tracks on which the whole band is credited.) Mould's "I Apologize" is surely the catchiest song on the record, but Hart's "The Girl Who Lives on Heaven Hill" isn't far behind. Each has his weaker moments, such as Hart on "Books About UFOs", which tries too hard to be winsome and whimsical, and Mould on "Perfect Example". But these are *very* minor slips, and Hart's one other track, "Terms of Psychic Warfare", is just about as good as any of Mould's songs. But Mould is, as usual, the star of this record. From the bits of acoustic picking on "Celebrated Summer", to the unrelenting "59 Times the Pain", "I Don't Know What You're Talking About", and "Whatcha Drinkin'", to the bizarre "How To Skin A Cat" and the abrasive closer "Plans I Make", Mould's songs dominate the record and never let your ear off the hook. And Greg Norton, the oft-forgotten member of Husker Du, deserves a hand for his fine bass playing on tracks like "Powerline", "Terms of Psychic Warfare", and "How To Skin A Cat".

Many have pointed out that the production on this album (and all of the other ones by Husker Du) is a bit thin and hazy. Yes, it is. Sometimes this can be downright infuriating, such as on the otherwise great "If I Told You", where is it almost impossible to hear, let alone understand, some of the vocals. This is an unfortunate flaw, but the record sounds pretty damn good when cranked up to 11, which is really the only way to play a Husker Du record anyway. Besides, no such petty complaint can ruin the melodic noisefest that New Day Rising is. It follows the same aesthetic as Zen Arcade, but scales back the size to provide a more solid one-shot punch. Husker Du would perfect their concise pop ambitions later the same year (1985) on Flip Your Wig, and end their massively influential career with another double album, Warehouse: Songs and Stories. Thus, New Day Rising occupies the important spot in which the band's hardcore was at its most accessible peak, and their desire for more pop flavor was just creeping in.

If you've read about Husker Du and thought "Ooh, that sounds pretty cool", this is the record to start with.

New Day Rising is gorgeous, and I mean that literally--it comes from, and goes for, the throat--from the maxed out fury in the opening seconds all the way through the near perfect pop of "I Apologize"..."Celebrated Summer"...beyond that...I had forgotten how magnificent this record is, and how gracefully it has aged.
And I agree, moment for moment it's more satisfying than Zen Arcade.

awesome, but nowhere near their best.......2006-06-12

that title belongs to the "warehouse songs and stories" album. dont get me wrong, this cd is some quality pop laced hardcore...is it ok to say pop punk?..well anyways, yes this is more consistent than zen arcade(which about ties this) but i feel it just is missing a certain signature husker du nostalgia feeling that warehouse contained......celebrated summer contained this, but the rest simply seemed like a polished zen arcade sound..while not being as diverse, but more catchy and easier to grow on...this is a great first timer album unless you can find warehouse anywhere...which is weird that you can find SST indy cds easier than the warner releases.

i dont dislike this album at all, but to me it just grows stale the fastest..it is much better than candy apple grey though!..and i confess i still need to hear flip your wig..hehe

these guys really did come from nowhere...a lot of bands are members from other bands that have broken up...they broke the mold...these guys deliver the pure hardcore sound without stepping into the metalcore...A+ for WED...

this cd is amazing. its not your typical hardcore album. the music has hints of skate punk,80s metal and new york hardcore influence. while most hardcore bands have alot of depressing lyrics about depression and sadness where eagles dare also does but they mix it up by adding in other things into the lyrics.

This my friends is metalcore..........2005-10-12

I can sell you the scariness of this album in no more than 3 seconds, about the times it takes to upload the first track, "Hired Angel," here on Amazon. The clunky, rudimentary lick is the priest, the crooning is the choir boy. The boy pleads for his life, as the priest slashes his chest and lungs, mechanically, stoically... His bits paint the altar... And then things slow, only for a second, though it's the longest second, and we follow the priest's arm - in slow motion - as it carves the boy's flesh... We can't help but notice the chilling calm on the man's face.

Poof. Beefy guitar crunches pedal in, sludgy riding cymbals, choppy crash, tortured screams... Suddenly, we're situated in a netherworld in which we cannot know. Only imagine. I can't be sure. Certainly not. Though I interpret that which I sense. Demented angels, terribly sick, gnarled features, twisting themselves around this boy's soul as it's pulled through the darkness, toward a faint light somewhere far beyond... Withered fingers, knobbed by inflammation, fight to keep the boy here... With us.

Hands down, one of the most possessed albums ever. With the insight of _You and I_ and the severity of cult band _Weakling_, _New Day Rising_ is just nasty. And to think this album was created by a bunch of kids, way back in '97, back when Eulogy Recordings was a bull, with bands like _Upheavel_, _Bird of Ill Omen_, and _Spread the Disease_.

Tortured wails over brooding arpeggios, thick crunchy guitar chugging, occasional power chords with sketchy vocal melodies, breakdowns the beckon karate-kick-central, chainsaw riffing, heinous battery that is, at times, strangely funky, and an indescribable uniqueness that sets this band apart. I would have shiiit on the floor and stuffed it back up my ass to have seen these guys live.

You ever listen to an album or song and think "hey, I KNOW this band" and then were completely wrong... but not in a bad way? Well the Backup Plan is that band. "Dearest Whomever" at times sounds like the album (or at 19 minutes, should I say EP?) that Kid Dynamite never made. I know other reviewers might debate this point, but while this album is not breaking any new ground, or blending hereunknown genres, or selling records by the truckload, etc. etc., (notchmarks that appear on most reviewers crooked yardsticks), it doesn't detract from the fact that this is a solid album, every track, from beginning to end. You can't help but keep edging the volume up with every song and it's a perfect tonic for what you need to escape from the media whoring of the hair grunge bands that spew on the airwaves today. Definately a band to keep an eye on.

The 23 tracks feature both singles, their Bullshit Detector Vol. 2 appearance and 16 unreleased studio recordings, packaged in a 12 page booklet with previously unseen photos and a detailed history from founder member Steve Pegrum.

The last review I read of this, was not a review, it was a comment, had the person gone to explain why they did not like the album, then perhaps that would have been more helpful.

So what to make of 'Insurrection', it is perhaps something only for die hards of punk music to truly enjoy, but the songs do go across boundries and in a snese with this album you are not judging it on individual songs, you are judging on its whole and within the context, of course songs have to be judged, but part of that judgement is taking into account their background.

Kronstadt were nevera big band, they never set the charts alight, they changed the face of the world, what they did do was become part of and evolve the Southned on Sea punk scene of England during the 1980's, an off shoot of London, Southned has always been keen to go its own way, the punk scene in fact this happeend becuase Southend had venues that were willing to give those people who wanted to play a chance.

Some of the songs on the album on the face of it do fall at the first hurdle, but some especially by the close of proceedings in 1987 how a maturity and a sense of a band finally gelling, what 'The Kronstadt' lack is a really good line up, near the end it is almost right and it is these songs which are the strongest. Founder meber Steve Pegrum obviously knew what he was searching for, it was simply a case of finding it, that seems to have ben the dificult part.

The album never comprimes forcing you to love or hate it, the music remains true to its punk routes with dashings of influence as the years go on. It never sells out, remaing strong on the beliefs it was built upon.

In calling the songs dire is also forgetting that these are often demo recordings, which means they often capture somethign raw. When you're young and in abnd recording time and money go hand in hand.

Buy the album for what it is, a slice of growing up in the 1980's, a slice of pure punk, that never quite achieved greatness in the accpeted sense, but now through the magic that is time has found that is caputred something unique, it has almost frozen time and played it back to us and the album certainly doesn't disgrace itself, the last songs on the album are by the far the strongest, if you like your punk raw and rock 'n' roll you'll obtain the most from these. The lyrics contain all the niaevety and anger of people growing up, especially in Thatcher's Britian, what you are getting here is a slice of life, from 1981 to 1987. These views and politics were common and reflect the fear of such things as nuclear war.

In this sense it makes fascinating listening, favourite track? 'Stay Free', a poignant end to an interesting career.

Is it worth buying? Yes, this is good solid Punk, if that is what you like then you will not be dissopointed.
