The original 1978 Broadway cast recording of Stephen Schwartz's Working has long been awaited on CD, and this great-sounding 2001 release proves it was worth the wait. Surely one of the more unlikely sources for a musical was Studs Terkel's 1972 book that compiled interviews of American working people discussing their jobs and what they liked and disliked about them. Schwartz transformed these interviews into a series of songs written by himself, Craig Carnelia, Mary Rodgers and Susan Birkenhead, Micki Grant, and pop singer James Taylor, and accordingly the variety of songs is as great as the variety of the workers featured. There's the lyric beauty of "The Mason," the rueful "Just a Housewife," the retiree's wry "Joe," the waitress's lilting "It's an Art," Taylor's pop-country "Brother Trucker," and the powerful emotion of "Fathers and Sons," realized by a compelling cast that features David Patrick Kelly, Joe Mantegna, Bob Gunton, and Lynne Thigpen, among others.

Six bonus tracks include a new version of the grocery checker song written for the 1999 L.A. Theatreworks production, Carnelia and Grant performing their own songs (unfortunately, Grant's track comes from a poor-quality audio source), and Schwartz's moving performance of "Fathers and Sons" from 1999's The Stephen Schwartz Album. Also welcome are 2001 notes from Schwartz paired with 1978 notes from Terkel, and a detailed listing of the composers and performers of each song. Working was filmed for American Playhouse in 1982. --David Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars An underrated musical.......2006-03-16

This musical seems to be very underrated, because it isn't done in a traditional style. There is no set storyline or characters. It is essentially a grouping of songs about different people and the work they do in their lives. Some of the songs are very powerful, like "Millworker", and some are just fun, like "Lovin' Al". Some songs date the recording, as songs like "Brother Trucker", while good, have a bit of a synthesized 70's feel. The majority of the songs are more traditional.

I saw this show done by my high school years ago, so maybe it holds a bit of nostalgia for me, but it is definitely worth checking out.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Lesser Known Gem.......2005-12-26

I have never seen Working, but would love to, and I would love to perform it so as to revive interest in it. I found out about this recording from an online site, and I fell in love with it. It's a very modern style musical although from 1978. Were it on Broadway today, it would still be revelent to today's working class. My favorite number probably has to be "It's An Art", just because of its sheer fun. I could listen to that song all day and never get bored with it. I do, however, find "Brother Trucker" to be a bit tiring, and "Neat To Be A Newsboy" is just plain old, outdated, and ANNOYING! Other than that, wonderful ablum for an almost forgetten show.

5 out of 5 stars Keep Working!!!.......2004-06-12

I had the privilege of seeing a production of this wonderful musical at L.A. Valley College in May 2004. I quickly fell in love with the songs and the entire premise of the musical. Now, with this CD, I can finally sing along to all the brilliant songs over and over again, belting them out like there is no tomorrow.

What makes Working so special is that anyone can relate to the lyrics, they are powerful, beautiful, touching, and extremely real. Anyone who has ever worked a day in their life will feel the lyrics hit close to home. Whether you're a housewife, a valet parker, a fireman, a millworker, a teacher, a cleaning woman, or even a hooker, this musical has a place for you, no matter what job you do.The emotion, sincerity, and love expressed in the songs are amazing, and they are all extremely unique and a pure joy to listen to.

All the songs are fantastic but the stand-outs have to be "All the Live Long Day," "Just a Housewife," "If I Could've Been," "It's An Art," "Father's and Sons," "Cleaning Women," and "Something to Point to." I also have a soft spot for "Brother Trucker" and "I'm Just Movin" from the 1999 revival, which I am so grateful is included in this CD. This is a terrific, feel-great album everyone should listen to. Give Working a chance, it's worth it.

4 out of 5 stars a good, if obscure CD.......2003-09-26

i admit that this is an obscure musical, but nevertheless i found myself in a production of WORKING as Grace, the millworker. upon listening to the cd, i found that each song characterized the character well. the newsboy song is NOT annoying and my favourite songs are "its an art", "cleaning women", "if i could've been" and "lovin al". I would only recommend this CD for a real musical theatre afficionado, as those who don't appreciate the beauty of a musical won't understand these songs.

5 out of 5 stars off the beaten path.......2003-07-10

I had never heard of this show until I stage managed a musical revue that included "If I Could've Been." That song grew on me, and I finally had to check out the rest of the soundtrack. All of the music on this CD is fantastic, and the lyrics feel sincere, creating beautiful moments for each character. Stephen Schwartz's best decision with this show was collaborating, allowing different composers to bring their own talents and specialties to the music, thus making it more real and less "Broadway." My only criticism is that the liner notes are slim.

5 out of 5 stars Can't stop listening to it!.......2005-08-06

I love, love, love this band. Their last 2 album are just pure, fun rock. I am going to see them with Brand New Sin, another kick ass band in 10 days. You won't be dissappointed.

5 out of 5 stars yay!!!.......2005-03-29

i have yet to hear the album, however i saw them open for alice cooper.. and they were kickass.. i was skeptical because you can never tell how good an opening band is gonna be but by the time i went out to buy the cd from the stand in the foyer, it was sold out.. amazing sound.. sooo good

5 out of 5 stars This Band Kicks Ass.......2005-03-25

You have to have this CD if you love AC/DC, Ted Nugent, Foghat, Pat Travers and any hard driving band. I have seen about 3000 bands in my lifetime (estimated) and was a music photographer for years. I had on the Austin Music Network (cable TV) for noise and when walking through the room this band's video came on and caused me to sit down and watch them. Immediately, I got on the computer and found their website then ordered the CD the next day. It has not left my CD player in my truck or at work since I bought this CD. This band kicks Ass!!!

5 out of 5 stars Rock & Roll the way it was intended to be!.......2004-11-18

These boys are great. Saw them in concert in Ottawa this summer. They were incredible. This CD is as hard rocking as it gets. Brings you back to the days of Lynard Skynard, Ted Nugent, Black Oak Arkansas etc... If you love Rock & Roll.... buy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars A Splendid Souvenir to Remember a Spectacular Performance!.......2003-10-30

Having been fortunate to have seen the English National Opera's production in 1988 of "Orpheus" with Wilson and Pountney's outrageously naughty English text, this highlight CD serves as an audio souvenir. Too bad the ENO didn't have the foresight to film the production-would have made a great DVD. The CD booklet does have a few photos of the sets designed by Gerald Scarfe (who also designed Pink Floyd's "The Wall" album artwork) so you get a taste, combined with the CD selections, of what the production was like.

5 out of 5 stars god moves in a peculiar way.........i am god.............2002-01-17

Offenbach is great anyhow, but this recording is riotous. The translation into English is first-rate, really funny stuff, and the singing is pretty good, too. Very worthwhile.

5 out of 5 stars Orpheus in the Underworld.......2000-03-17

The rewritten lyrics, in English, are some of the wittiest and wicked in operetta. Wilson and Pountney have recaptured the spirit of naughtiness, not a small accomplishment in our licentious times. Though delighted to have the highlights, I wished a CD set or video of the full production were available.

4 out of 5 stars Excerpts.......1999-12-23

This is a collection of excerpts. It is in English and is quite good. The performance of the entire operetta has been discontinued and it is a pity.

5 out of 5 stars Highlights or total Opera?.......1999-11-01

I would like to know if this is highlights from the opera or the total opera.

5 out of 5 stars word. .......2007-04-03

This album is the greatest. I honestly don't know what else I can say besides that.

5 out of 5 stars ipecac neat.......2006-04-13

Okay, first things first, this album is better than the new "Audition." I'm not saying at all that I didn't love "Audition," but this is one of my favorite albums ever. POS wasn't as extreme grunge and getting overpowered by his bass and distorted guitar on this album. It's a bit closer to regular hip-hop. Definetly a must have for a fan of MPLS's DoomTree, (which is a MUCH better label than RSE, no offense). Basically this album, this label, could shape hip-hop. Show support, tell your friends, get these guys out there, and pretty soon, you'll hear a lot of phony rappers on the radio rocking a grunge sound in the background. Tight CD. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars amazing .......2006-03-10

I love this cd, as well as his new cd, I am a fan of music to fit my moods, and this cd bumps in my car before a session at the skatepark, or a couple of waves at the beach. It is nice to see somone doing something new for the underground. hands down one of my favorite performers right next to pigeon john. anyone that is at an underground show to get "KRUNK" needs to get KICKED. and i thought the thumb wresteling bit was funny! it's hard being an opening act, and trying to get the people pumped when they're all goin " Fook this I want to see Atmosphere" This cd is well worth every cent. listen to it, like it love it

5 out of 5 stars Doom the **** Tree.......2005-11-07

This is the album that got me excited about Minneapolis hip-hop. This was the first full-length in a long time from anybody in the Twin Cities that felt like a classic after the first listen. What is really too bad is most people outside of Minnesota wont get to see Pissed Off Stef perform with the rest of Doomtree live. Now that's a show. For now, people should try to get a hold of Sims new album "Lights Out Paris", listen to the track No Homeowners. That will give you an idea of how entertaining this crew is. Also watch for Stef's next album and a Dessa Darling full-length in the near future. Doomtree, Kanser, Big Quarters, Carnage, keep your eyes on Minnesota hip-hop.

5 out of 5 stars Great rapper with his own style. .......2005-11-06

I'de never heard of him until i saw the show lastnight. I actually enjoyed P.O.S. more than blueprint. Atmosphere was amazing.

He does have his own style that i became a fan of right away. Its funny someone else mentioned him thumb wrestling someone in the crowd. He did the same thing lastnight. The crowd was amped for him. Great performer with great lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars Neat Singles Collection Vol 2.......2006-05-17

Disc One (The A-Sides)
The only A-Sides on Disc One I did not like was :

Tobruk - "Wild On The Run" (1983), really lame song.

Emerson - "Something Special" (1983), they should of renamed this song "Nothing Special".

Besides these two tracks, I pretty much enjoyed all of The A-Sides on Disc One.

Disc Two (The B-Sides)
The only B-Sides on Disc One I did not like was :

Raven & Udo - "Born To Be Wild" (1983), predictable cover song, I have no Idea why Raven did this one.

Emerson - "Stars In Hollywood" (1983), keyboard driven track just like the A-side of this song.

Besides these two tracks, I pretty much enjoyed all of The B-Sides on Disc Two.

For those who are collecting NWOBHM albums, this one is highly recommended. Also check out "The Neat Singles Collection Volume One, Two and Three", "The Flame Burns On : The Best Of Neat Records" and "NWOBHM : Lightnin' The Nations 25th Anniversary Collection"

4 out of 5 stars Phil expands his horizons.......2006-07-30

Suprisingly good album from Phil Lewis and Co. Far better than anything L.A. Guns were doing in his absence. Definatly worth a spin.

        3 out of 5 stars an o.k recording.......2006-07-21

bought this disc thinking phil lewis provided the vocals on all tracks, to my disappointment he does not. phil lewis sings about half of the songs on the disc sharing the vocals with steve dior. the disc is an alright listen but for those LAG fans hoping to hear phil lewis on all the songs, beware. as for the music, ladbroke groove, which closes out the disc, has a LAG sound to it and is a definite highlight but also worth noting are: outta control, black cadillac and baby i want. steve dior does an ok job on his portion of the music but he's no phil lewis. if you looking for something different from phil lewis check out his solo album titled 'more purple than black'.

3 out of 5 stars Phil Lewis post LA Guns 1998!!.......2001-11-01

Really not a bad album.........not the LA Guns stuff u would normally expect nonetheless its Phil Lewis..........not many highlite and pretty blah at best.......

5 out of 5 stars PRETTY BAD ASS............2005-10-07

The first volume in this two volume set is worth it, I have to say. I'm a sucker for underground metal, especially the stuff rom the late seventies, early eighties. I love the sh**ty sound quality, the thrash, the rawness of it all.

I just think that its a weird concept for the mix, that being that its original versions of songs covered by METALLICA. So is this considered a METALLICA album? Are they getting money for this? I really hope not. It's not that I don't like METALLICA, I just think that they are bogus money pigs. I hope that the real bands all get royalties for their songs cuz a few of these guys never really made it at all.

Anyway, I can recommend this CD, but not number two... that one ain't worth it.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent source for hard-to-find songs.......2003-09-12

Metallica is usually remembered for their original songs that made them a huge success with fans. But many Metallica fans, even the die-hards, overlook the band's cover songs (that's "remakes" to those of you not familiar with musical terms.) A few Metallica fans have heard the remakes, but have often wondered, "Where can I hear the original version of this song?" This compilation is a good place to start. Read on for my review of it.

        PROS:
-Diamond Head, the band Metallica is best known for covering, is well-represented here. If you wanted to hear the original version of Am I Evil, you've come to the right place!
-Another excellent band featured here is Sweet Savage, with their amazing cut Killing Time. The interesting thing is that this features none other than Vivian Campbell (Dio, Whitesnake, Def LepparD) on guitar!
-The Anti-Nowhere League's So What is one of the most underappreciated comedy-punk songs of all time.

        CONS:
        -Obviously, Diamond Head is overemphasized.
-This doesn't include EVERY song Metallica has ever covered. You won't even get them all if you get this and the other CD in this series.
-These recordings are from the late seventies to the mid eighties, so don't expect excellent sound quality.

        OVERALL:
If you want to hear songs Metallica has covered, you've come to the right place, plain and simple. Many of these songs are nearly impossible to find on the Compact Disc format, so this is a highly-recommended compilation.

        5 out of 5 stars A MUST-HAVE.......2000-07-14

This is a must-have to Metallica-fans. Nowadays it's hard to find original recordings of these songs Metallica has covered over the years, so this is a great opportunity to get these songs. The main thing is, of course, that this album totally rocks! Especially all those Diamond Head -songs are great. Get this CD and you won't have regrets.
