Easter
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Patti Smith cowrote her first big hit, "Because the Night," with Bruce Springsteen, and that track was the force behind this album's ascent of the U.S. Top 40. Never fully departing from her punk-poetess roots, Easter was nonetheless produced by hit maker Jimmy Iovine, resulting in a more accessible overall sound than her earlier work. Her vocal gymnastics and dramatic rock & roll sensibilities threw sparks in every direction, with the vitriolic "Rock N Roll Nigger" and the anthemic "Till Victory" further paving the way for punks and women rockers everywhere. Churchly keyboards and huge drums drive Smith's quest for "a reason to live" on the religiously inquisitive "Privilege" and she's unabashedly sexy on the raunchy "25th Floor." A great work all around. --Lorry Fleming --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Stellar Performance.......2007-06-27
Having been a professional violinist and pianist for thirty years, I have developed a special appreciation for classical music. Scheherezade is one of the great orchestral pieces. This version clearly highlights the great skill of the composer and the orchestra. All the pieces on this cd are performed at a high skill level and the recording quality is excellent. It is on a par with the great performances by other orchestras, and I highly recommend it.
Nostalgia.......2007-06-27
My father was a classical musician in the days when every major theater had a pit orchestra of concert-level musicians. Boris Morros, a Russian born impresario paid tribute to them, saying: "the impact of these luxurious film theaters on the culture of America has never been properly emphasized. In one of our marble movie temples every tired scrub-lady could feel like a queen--for fifty cents--and every bootblack like a king as they lounged back in more comfortable chairs than monarchs ever enjoyed. I was impressed by the ever-growing popularity of the so-called good music the large symphony orchestras in these theaters played at each performance. From the day they opened they had thrilled audiences of ordinary people (who were supposed to have appreciation only for ragtime and sentimental ballads) with first-rate renditions...." Anyway, when those theaters and orchestras went, the substitute was a cult of mediocrity, so I was just indulging myself listening to all the horn work in Korsakov and remembering all those 'good ol days.'
Best Classical CD bargain on Amazon, IMHO.......2007-03-29
I'm surprised this CD isn't displayed on the Classical Blowout store. Perhaps it's *too* good a bargain? I purchased this CD for one piece: The Story Of The Kalandar Prince. My children and I love this work, as it is orchestrated like a story ("tone poem" is the correct term I think) - insert your imagination as to how it plays out.
This a wonderful CD to play on a cold winter night, with a roaring fire and a glass of wine. If you want a fine introduction to the 'oomph' of Easter European composers, you can do no wrong with this CD. I also recommend the Edwin Elgar Pomp & Circumstance CD from this bargain Seraphim collection.
Cheap? Only in price.......2007-02-22
First - how can one go wrong buying this cd at this price? The answer is - one cannot go wrong buying this cd at this price. Not even at three times this price. It's a lush recording and is every bit as good as anything recorded yesterday in a state of the art studio. At least some people have never heard of Rimsky-Korsakov. This is a cheap way to be introduced nicely. Others have these pieces by three or four different orchestras. Add this one - you'll be glad you did if for no other reason than when it arrives you'll listen once again to music you've put away for some time.
It's truly wonderful.

If you like gregorian chants... you will love this cd. Its perfect to just sit on you own... and meditate.
Great music, great price.......2007-05-07
I ordered this cd for a book club I was hosting on the book "The Pillars of the Earth" by Ken Follett. It was perfect "mood" music for the discussion and the price was unbeatable!
Definitely Meditative.......2007-03-09
The gift that these men are able to share is worth listening to. To be quiet in yourself and allow space for this soulful chanting is an experience in itself.
Gregorian Meditation.......2007-01-13
Great CD. My wife and I listen to it almost daily. We even use it for prayer sessions. Also the product was in perfect condition and and was as advertised. We're totaly satified.
Beautiful.......2007-01-13
I have bought Volumes I and II and am very pleased with the quality, the sound, and the style of the chanting. The lyrics are amazing, many of which come straight from the Bible, especially from the Book of Psalms. Let me know of other great Chant CD's, be they Gregorian, Amabrosian, or even Greek/Byzantine.

Great music, soothing, calming and perfect for bedtime quality time.
Mellow, Sleepy, Wonderful.......2005-10-27
I bought this CD for myself, a 60 year old. I have trouble sleeping and have been buying CDs by this company. They are all wonderful. I'm asleep in about 15 minutes!
Soothing Bach.......2005-04-29
It would probably help to first clear up a potential misconception in the unfortunate subtitle which refers to "lullabies" - a term that brings to mind for most people simplistic, sing-songy music hummed to babies in a crib. Lullabies are wonderful and have their place, but the music on the CD is not this (and Bach would probably have cringed a bit at the thought of his music here being called "lullabies.") What is here is a most wonderful, high-quality collection of Bach's Baroque music that is most condusive to creating a quiet, peaceful mood. The selections here include many famous pieces from Bach played by an impressive, all-star line up of notable musicians. Some listeners might take comfort in knowing that all selections have a similar, gentle tempo and mood without those unwanted changes in loudness from soft to LOUD that can startle one (the baby?) from sleep or quiet contemplation. The sound quality is good for the purpose of this collection - to provide relaxing background music or Rx for insomnia. I listen to this CD often if I wake up at night.
Johan Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) was a devout German Lutharan who devoted much of his life to composing music for various church functions and events in his position of 'head music master" in his different appointments. As such, we see often in Bach's music a "pastoral" quality - whose effect is to encourage, comfort and renew the spirit. No piece (and title) is more demonstrating of this quality then the opening "Sheep May Safely Graze" which is perhaps the finest recording of this magnificant and comforting piece by the Stuttgart Orchestra who brings a most expressive quality to the music. Its inter-weaving and delicate melodies give rise to serene visions of carefree green pastures and the sense that all is well. So, perhaps in that vein, this music has some commonality to traditional lullabies.
But, even though the music is serene, there is much musically to hear in these tunes - for those still awake. Bach's genius is seen here for setting a lyrical solo instrument (violin, oboe, cello) against a stable, comforting background orchestra pulsing away in Bach fashion. Many of these works are a typical style of Bach music known as "fugues" - which is a type of music where two-three instruments simultaneously play different melodies that all blend together in splendid harmony. This consistent, calming rhythm with gently soaring melodies are part of what makes such music suitable for bedtime. Finally, one who is just nodding off can appreciate that the last two selections are the most peaceful with the fewest notes coming from the solo guitar of Pepe Romero. They end in a whisper which should be right about the time you fall asleep and the CD player quietly clicks off. This is a really wonderful compilation of Bach's music that should be pleasing to both those just looking for some nice, relaxing music - or even to the long-term classical collector who already has 30 CD's of Bach's music but values the variety and soothing qualities of such 'even-temperament' collections.
Great for kids!.......2001-11-29
I bought this CD for my daughter when she turned six. It's been a year and she still listens to it a lot. Yes, she also listens to Britney and Christina, but on many nights she will request Bach (aka: that one with no words). It's great to know that they selected soothing, relaxing pieces. It's a wonderful way to broaden my daughter's horizons while also getting her to sleep.
My Kind of Bedtime.......2001-10-17
This CD is lovely and soothing, and I have to take exception to R. Loam's contention that the entire CD is in the minor key. I can determine from listening to the samples that certainly #1 and #5 are in the major key, and there are probably more. The minor key does not have to invoke meloncholia - it is many times in the eyes of the beholder.

patti smith.......2007-06-19
from the mother of punk and grunge, one of the best combinations of words and music. others may copy "Because the Night", but hers is done the way it was meant to be. it only gets better with replay.
Her Second and Final Masterpiece (* * * * 1/4).......2007-05-11
That Patti Smith's third LP was to be unique in her catalogue was evident by the album cover: it was in color. Similarly, the sound of the album was a bit more colorful, too. This was thanks to producer Jimmy Iovine, whose previous clients as a sound engineer included Bruce Springsteen and Meat Loaf, and among whose future credits as a producer would be Tom Petty, Bob Seger, Stevie Nicks, Simple Minds, The Pretenders, and U2. This résumé makes him seem like an odd choice for a singer who just three years earlier was being produced by John Cale.
But there was a common bond between Smith and Iovine: the aforementioned Bruce Springsteen. Iovine had engineered Born To Run and Darkness On the Edge of Town, and Springsteen co-wrote what has justly become Smith's most enduring song, "Because The Night". Some at the time probably considered Smith to be a sellout for daring to reach the top 20 with a really good song on a really good album. However, just as rage and spirituality - sometimes borderline preachiness - are part of her poetic formula, so is tenderness. Her unrefined voice gets a great showcase here, and shows that one's voice must only suit the material to be beautiful. (Listen to Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits for other examples of this.)
Iovine's touch is obvious on the opening track, "Till Victory", which starts off with a triumphant beat that almost turns into The Boss' "Badlands". This followed by the strong mid-tempo rocker "Space Monkey", co-written with her long-time collaborator and friend Tom Verlaine. "Ghost Dance" is somewhat repetitive and goes on a bit long, but it has a nice tribal flavor to it. "Babelogue", unfortunately, is a pretty sophomoric rant. "I haven't f----- much with the past, but I've f----- plenty with the future"...oooh, deep. Still, there is one line which stands out in a post-9/11 world: "In heart I am a Moslem, in heart I am an American; in heart I am Moslem, in heart I am an American artist".
This brings us to what is probably Smith's most controversial song, "Rock 'N' Roll N-----". If her goal was, as she says in "Babelogue", to "seek the nerves under you skin", then she certainly succeeded with this song. Such a title alone has the potential to be downright offensive, poetic license notwithstanding. However, the fact that Smith was able to perform this song nearly 30 years later at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction is proof enough that people understand how she is using the forbidden word. Clearly, it is not meant as a disparaging term for African-Americans. Granted, she does say "Jimi Hendrix was a n-----", but she says the same of Jesus Christ and Jackson Pollack. What these three have in common is that they were "outside of society", as were the African slaves who went from being considered subhuman to 3/5 human, only to have their descendents relegated to second-class citizenship. The skin that they were literally born into made them different, but it didn't make them inferior to others any more than the figurative skin into which Jesus, Jackson, and Jimi were born did. Thus, it was wrong to treat African-Americans as inferior, just as it would have been to treat the latter three as such.
"Rock 'N' Roll N-----", divides the album down the middle, and she waxes poetic a bit more on the second half. "We Three", which has a bit of a girl group quality to it, and "Easter" are both fairly tender tracks. "25th Floor", conversely, is a pure rocker, with a curious rant about pollution and excrement thrown in halfway through. The guitar that opens the song is reminiscent "Teenage Head" by The Flamin' Groovies, while in the verses it settles into a staccato strut that sounds like it might have been on Marquee Moon. This song segues into "High On Rebellion", another sturdy rocker, which contiues Smith's double vocal track that began in the previous song.
Rock critic Jim DeRogatis described Horses and Easter as albums on which Patti Smith's "artistic pretensions and rock 'n' roll power are mixed in equal proportions". While Easter is not quite as strong as her debut, it is darn close. The longer pieces from Horses are forgone for shorter, more focused songs. (The longest song on Easter is the title track, which is just over six minutes long, as opposed to the two songs of over nine minutes on Horses.) Anyone who is inclined to like Patti Smith will find both albums equally satisfying, and both are essential to any rock 'n roll CD collection. (Although her releases have been few and far between since 1978, and have only fitfully reached the standard of her best albums, the 2-disc compilation Land: 1975-2002 is also nice to have around.)

this is a very good album, i liked all the songs ex/ for a few, went on too long f/me.
Rock On Patti.......2007-03-30
I've heard Patti Smith's name mentioned by many people but never listened to any of her music. That is until I saw her marvelous performance at 2007 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction on tv. I picked up this cd because it had "Because The Night" and "Rock n' Roll Nigger". I'm greatly impressed by her songwriting ability and just love "Space Monkey." I cannot believe to be so behind the times in appreciating this incredible rocker. I also did not realize that U2 had been such huge fans of hers until a clip at the R&R Hall of Fame was shown with drummer Larry Mullen mentioning Patti. This album rocks and really shows that the ladies can write & rock out at the same time!
A Godess for the ages.......2006-11-29
Easter is sweeter than being submerged in a sea of honey, but this is Patti Smith--one of the finest souls to ever grace our planet, and I've never seen her live...but on DVD. If you've never heard 'Horses', you can not claim to be a R&R genius, and without a soul-searching week or two with 'Radio Ethiopia', give it up. After you've meshed with the rest of her catalog (try 'Stride of the Mind' from 'Trampin'), you will be hard pressed to argue that this fine lady's work is nothing short of immortal.

Highly Worthy of the "Definitive" Title!.......2007-07-06
This is one of my favorite pieces of Russian music ever composed, which is a mixed blessing in the sense that, when the music is performed the right way, it's positively revelatory, and when it's performed the wrong way, it's a massive bummer and leads to deep emotional frustration. I've heard lots of Scheherazades, including the ubiquitously lauded Reiner and Beecham discs, and I must say, for me, they can't hold a candle to this one. Here's why.
So many Scheherazades are all technique and no heart. Many listeners actually go for virtuosity and technique above emotion and pathos, which is A-OK with me (to each his own!), but those folks have tons of Scheherazades to pick from. As for the rest of us, it's a real struggle to find the one that DELIVERS. I hereby submit, my fellow sentimentalists, that this one is it!
Where some Scheherazades' second movements feature dry, passionless instrumentation, Ormandy gives the instantly recognizable violin theme a tuneful depth, richness, and just a touch of vibrato to give it the feel and tenderness of a human voice. The harps, also of note, give the dulcet sense of wonderment most Scheherazades just can't grasp. The oboes are indescribably good.
I think what I love best about this reading is that Ormandy doesn't seem at all afraid of adding just a touch of improvisation to give the work freshness and excitement. Tasteful cadenzas and flourishes abound, but never overcome compositional integrity or seem excessive. Best of all, in the passages that need to be thunderous, we get THUNDER! From the beginning of the fourth movement, the delightful reality of what this music can and is supposed to sound like crystalizes in one's mind.
In closing, don't take my word for it. Listen to Amazon's sound samples and hear for yourself how the innate magic of this piece takes wing under Ormandy's baton. Also highly recommended is Svetlanov's performance with the LSO, which is possessed of a similar spirit of emotional depth and musical richness, as is Monteux's dramatic (but pretty hard to track down) Scheherazade recording.
The Definitive Scheherazade.......2007-05-10
I bought this Ormandy recording of Sheherazade in the 1960s on LP, and I know it intimately. What a joy to find it reissued on CD! The sound quality was superior then and just as fresh now. The violin soloist is magnificent, the sections of the orchestra crisply discrete and clear, the stereo imaging breathtaking. Highly recommended rendering of this timeless, romantic showpiece.
very enjoyable.......2006-11-10
I found this recording one of the best for the three pieces presented.
It is a very enjoyable hour or so of listening.
Clarity and delicious sound.......2005-12-30
This is the best version of Sheherazade I have listened to. Even the Capriccio Espagnol, which normally I don't like, has a compelling sound. I couldn't take off the earphones. Every instrument is clear, every voice weaves in and out with clarity, no voices are overwhelmed by orchestral swelling or other voices as in other recordings. I suspect this may have to do with the aggressive recording and remastering techniques as much as with the conducting, but so what? I was caught up in Rimsky-Korsakov as never before. The themes are repetitive, but his arrangements of the sounds of the orchestra are enrapturing. This CD makes these sounds delicious.
I purchased this CD because I had no recording of the Russian Easter Festival Overture. I figured that I did not need another version of Scheherazade; I already had CD versions conducted by Barenboim and Mackerras. But then I hit the play button and was swept away. If you don't have Scheherazade, this is the version to get. If you want a better one than you already have, this will likely satisfy the need.

Very peaceful music.......2007-06-11
I generally work for long hours at my computer and it can be stressful, I read the review for this cd , because one of my customers ( I manage Bolivia Stores at Amazon) wrote a review about this cd same as he wrote a review for one of my teas and I was very intrigued because he is a very religious person that lived in Bolivia with the Peace Corp, well... The price was great and I decided to ordered it...... I just love it, it takes away the stress of a long day !
It sound a bit boring in the beginning but once you get caught for the music is just peace all around!!
Gregorian Chants Review.......2007-05-06
The CD was delivered within the time stated and is as advertized ... good
Answer to a prayer.......2007-04-05
I have been frantically searching for a cd with some of the old Good Friday Gregorian chants I remembered from my childhood. I planned to play it as background music for our Good Friday service at a home for the elderly. I ran a search on Amazon and this was the first cd that popped up. I ordered it, thinking it would probably not arrive in time for the service. What a pleasant surprise to have it in such a short time and at such a low price. Beautiful music that would be worth purchasing at ten times the asking price.
Good Value.......2007-04-04
This collection of chants offers something for various seasons of the church year. The chants are well done, and they are useful for meditation purposes.
A good introduction to Gregorian Chant.......2007-03-29
This is a great way to be introduced to Gregorian chant, both for its quality and its low price.

The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

They were right--there is NO business like the show business they did way back when !!!.......2006-11-18
Everything that happens in life
Can happen in a show
You can make 'em laugh
You can make 'em cry
Anything
Anything can go....
The clown with his pants falling down
Or the dance that's a dream of romance
Or the scene where the villain is mean
That's entertainment!
The lights on the lady in tights
Or the bride with the guy on the side
Or the ball where she gives him her all
That's entertainment!
The plot and the hot simply teeming with $ex
A gay divorcee who is after her ex
It could be Oedipus Rex
Where a chap kills his father
And causes a lot of bother
The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doing him dirt
The world is a stage,
The stage is a world of entertainment!
This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."
I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.
There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.
The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.
In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.
One of the best cds I ever bought. .......2006-06-07
What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!
Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16
Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.
This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

Clerveaux Monks.......2007-07-11
It was quite wonderful to find this as the monks had none for sale at the Abbey.
Hauntingly Beautiful.......2007-01-19
This is an excellent cd. The emotion present in the monks' voices, espcially in the "Salve Regina" is deeply moving and beautiful. Highly recommended for anyone who is a fan of Gregorian chant, and a great first buy for someone who just wants to know what Gregorian chant sounds like.
Meditate as you listen...............2007-01-04
This lifts your heart to God as you listen. Beautifully done.
What a Magnificat!.......2006-09-01
I have listened to this recording since it was on a cassette tape and I always come back to it. What a gentle and sincere recording. The Magnificat is especially beautiful.
Soothing.......2006-02-21
I bought this disk while feeling depressed and not being able to focus. The chanting soothed me and gave me some piece of mind. Why then not 5 stars, you ask? Because the sound lacks a bit of clarity despite the remastering and the performance is good, but not exceptional.

Album Description
To some Mitch Easter might be best known as the guy who produced R.E.M.'s classic album, Murmur. To others he's best known as the front man for '80s new wave outfit Let's Active. The band's fruitful career included consistent touring and the release of four albums on IRS Records, one of which broke the Billboard Top 200. In addition to R.E.M. he's also produced albums for Helium, Ken Stringfellow (The Posies) and Velvet Crush, among others. The 90s saw Mitch's production work eclipsing his performing, but now he's back in action as a bandleader with new songs, new guitars and new energy. The resulting album, Dynamico, is a collection of fourteen glittering gems with signature Mitch Easter sounds and playing.
Customer Reviews:
Dynamico, Indeed.......2007-06-13
_Dynamico_ is terrific, at least as good as anything by Let's Active, and certainly more consistently buoyant: as the title suggests, this is a loud, fun record. The rocking "1 1/2 Way Street" kicks things off with a bang; that and tracks such as "Time Warping," "You/Me," "Ton of Bricks," and "Sights Set on Heaven" give the album's first half a harder edge than most of Easter's earlier work. But he heads into gentler (and in some ways more interesting) territory in the second half, with songs such as "To Be, Cool Thing," "The Phantoms of Ephemera," and the appropriately titled "Glazed." Musically, the songs are all insidiously catchy; lyrically, they range from straightforward sentiment (as in the built-for-radio "I Want a New Scene") to dazzling word salad (as in "Sudden Crown Drop").
It really is a solo record. Eric Marshall plays drums on one song, and Shalini Chatterjee plays bass on another (in addition to singing backup here and there), but Easter does everything else. And he does it very, very well: of course his guitar work is fantastic, but he's also an exciting bassist and drummer, unlike other guitarists-turned-one-man-bands. Then there's the sitar on "Glazed"; in his hands the instrument really shimmers the way it ought to. Add the saxophones, the organs, the synthesizers.... In the Let's Active days Easter was obviously a gifted musician, but now he really seems like an alt-rock Mozart.
Can't Keep a Good Dog Down.......2007-06-01
The notable North Carolina power-popster and producer's previous album was Let's Active's Every Dog Has his Day (1988). His return could be dubbed You Can't Keep a Good Dog Down. Dynamic it is, although just for starters I'm too nervous to compare it with the sonic peaks of the Let's Active catalogue.
Australian admirer Stuart Coupe co-produced the 2003 Let's Active tribute album. As a few of his contributors sighed, Easter's peaks are as simple and as hard as inimitable lyrics, melodies, chord progressions and guitar solos.
Budding rockers from Athens GA to Perth WA have cut their teeth sussing out those chords. Easter is like some entropy theorist of transatlantic rock, still inventing great originals from unstable amalgams of words and riffs.
He channels Let's Active itself in the melodic grunge of Sudden Crown Drop and Dusky Lair. The Byrds-like elation of Why is it So Hard? goes up against the intricate Badfinger-styled quaverings of To Be, Cool Thing. A simpler one vying for best song is Sights Set on Heaven, set off by purposeful lyrics and driving riff.
Rock on, Mitch!.......2007-05-14
Ok, so he's a little older, but this dog can still do tricks (not necessarily learn new ones, but perform pretty good ones). Mitch Easter's new CD "Dynamico" rocks out with a solid collection of music that will brighten up anyone's sound system. The one-two punch of, "1 1/2 Half Way Street" and "Break Through" offer up the same melodic/sonic guitar filled pop gems not heard since Let's Active's "Cypress" album. The CD doesn't bog down and keeps up a fairly good rockin pace. The only question I have for Mr. Easter is, "What took you so long"?
Mitch Never Left.......2007-04-02
This a perfect link between the Mitch Easter of Let's Active days and the Mitch who plays multi-instrumentalist and contributing songwriter in the excellent power pop band Shalini. Equal parts jangle rock, metal-edged power pop, and subdued prog rock, the record flows with ease and grace. There are three or four standout tracks, but there's nothing you'd call filler. Easter is a guitar wizard who never seems to feel the need to play showy "licks," choosing instead to employ his gift by pulling off subtle hooks and playful rhythms. The lyrics are enjoyably tongue-in-cheek, and while Easter has never been a great singer, he's good enough at it to deliver the songs fittingly. If you're a Let's Active fan who wasn't aware that Mitch Easter is still a performing musician, you will welcome this new set of songs gleefully. And if you like this, pick up the last album by Shalini, which is one of the great recent pop records that noboby ever talks about.
Worth waiting for........2007-03-14
Great cd. If you have been waiting 20 years for Mitch Easter to release new material like I have, wait no more. Good clean rock and roll. Mature release from a mature artist. I hope he pulls more from the vault to release...

Customer Reviews:
This is the version to buy.......2003-06-21
Already having a copy of the original album on cassette, I had my reservations about buying this CD. At any rate, I did--hoping the bonus cuts would be worth it. Well, folks, they are. Tracks 11-14 are live recordings from Texas, 1967, and the recordings are crisp and authentically LIVE (as opposed to the 1968 live album). The other live recordings of songs from the 1st album are from a San Francisco gig in 1966. Although these 1966 recordings aren't as well recorded as the previous tracks, the historical significance of the Elevators doing psychedelia in the Love Capitol at a time when the Airplane were still a Mamas and Papas throwback makes up for any minor lack of fidelity in the recording process. The instrumental "Levitation" is a studio workout. Last but not least, though, the final track, "I Don't Ever Want To Come Down," is a previously unreleased track from the "Bull" sessions that I'm glad I didn't miss out on.
