Blue Lines
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
The influence of Bristol, U.K.'s Massive crew on bringing trippy beats to the foreground is immeasurable. Not only were they the early test ground for other alterna-hop stars (ex-clansman Tricky, former songstresses Nicolette and Martina, and the lesser known productionists Smith & Mighty), they've spread their influence to everyone from fellow Bristol residents Portishead to Björk. Blue Lines is Massive's debut record and is the second musical union of Bristol's renowned collective, Wildbunch. The emotional purging and beat-driven orchestral movement of "Unfinished Sympathy" was among the first signs of life in contemporary English trip-hop culture. Other masterpieces, like "Daydreaming," which features Shara Nelson, Tricky, and other friends on the mic, throb with deep, dubby beats and soulful ambiance. Blue Lines marks the beginning of a musical legacy that is ever expanding. --Daniel Shumate --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

trip the hop fantastic.......2007-05-11
massive attack's 'blue lines' is a classic example of melding deep bass lines, great percussion tracks, fabulous vocals by tricky and shara nelson and inventive samples into the music phenom known as trip hop.
many have tried and failed at creating music this good. this is the kind of sound that can sit in the background or take center stage at any event. and its inventiveness is matched only by its timelessness. this cd sounds as good now as it did 15+ years ago.
A Classic.......2007-04-19
There is nothing much left to say about Massive Attack's masterpiece of "trip-hop" that is Blue Lines.
Tricky's raps are classy and smart and the warm synth work is both inspiring and brilliant. The deep dub-like bass grooves on this album are legendary. "Unfinished Symphony" is a soulful pop masterpiece. This album is displayed prominently on my CD rack.
Ok, I will stop the praise..only if you buy this album now.
one of the most underrated debuts ever.......2007-03-22
if there is ever an overlooked album this is definitely one of them. from the moment "Safe from Harm" starts we are encapsulated by this unique Bristol sound. what makes this Bristol sound so unique is the using of vintage sounds and putting them into such new settings. this album is definitely un-categorizable. we have soul/R&B, dub, hip-hop and even the hint of the Portishead like vintage soundtrack sound. this album is most certainly seed planting and both sides of the Atlantic have undoubtedly taken this to full advantage. never has an album had a "i know i've heard this somewhere" kind of attitude.
Consider the context..........2007-01-16
An Italian, and a couple of Afro-Caribeans, living in Bristol, where a whole new scene is emerging, with the likes of Tricky, Portishead and Roni Size producing new beats. You produce your first album and name your band Massive Attack, only for George Bush senior to invade Kuwait. Hence the band became known (for a short while) as Massive (and I did have a copy simply named Massive till it was stolen - if you have one you have a rarity).
Like their other albums they use a female guest vocalist - this time soul singer Shola Ahma, who later went solo (maybe they'd have kept her?) What you have is slickly produced music that captures the early 90's. Their later albums are more sophisticated, btu this is where it all began.

Customer Reviews:
Two tracks I really like.......2007-07-21
The Mission Impossible theme is performed well.
The Fireball theme is actually much improved on this version. I prefer the orchestra and the vocals over the original.
Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15
As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".
Mediocre.......2006-05-17
The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.
One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06
I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.
Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24
Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

Erik Wollo's works are overlooked gems of modern instrumental music. From his home in Norway, Wollo's been sending out missives of mood and ambience since the mid-1980s with albums like Silver Beach and Solstice. Last year's U.S. release of Guitar Nova explored the acoustic-guitar side of this musician in multilayered, overdubbed soundscapes that retained the ambience and structure of his electronic works. With Wind Journey, he returns to synthesizers but keeps his electric guitar at hand for some gloriously heroic solos, especially on "Dream Line." A subtle, tugging ostinato pattern builds into layers of keyboard orchestrations topped by guitar, which starts out in a pastoral, acoustic mode but segues into a soaring lead solo that recalls Steve Hackett during his Spectral Mornings era. Wind Journey is centered by Seasons Suite, a 10-part sequence of moody vignettes. Erik Wollo's roots in progressive rock are clear and he uses them to articulate a cinematic music. While Wollo lives in a country with some of the most awe-inspiring landscapes in the world, he composes much of his music in a basement studio. The worlds he creates are strictly from the imagination, and what a vivid imagination it is. --John Diliberto
Customer Reviews:
Ambient music that takes me far, far away!.......2003-04-24
I have purchased cd in the summer of 2002. Back then, all I could think of doing was listen to 88.5 on the radio and hope that they will play music from Erik Wollo. The first song I heard was "Dream Lines". The music didn't seem familiar to me at first. I didn't consider it really ambient but it turned out that it was. After listening to it, I was into it very much. I never heard such a song played like that before and I knew it was something I would like. Wollo plays the guitar in a way that the sound echoes in my head and makes me feel like Im somewhere far and distant. In a short time, I heard "Wind Journey 1". That was amazing. After I listened to it few more times, I was into it so much that I couldn't help buying it from Amazon.com. Just about every beat and sound seems to echoe as if it was played outside where nothing surrounds you and where the music can travel and be heard. Listen to the samples and decide. Buying this cd is something to consider.
What a surprise and completely different from the last CD.......2001-09-27
The last Eric Wollo CD featured wonderful virtuoso guitar, most closely akin to a "fingerpicking" style. Each piece was different, almost like a "best of" CD. This CD is completely different in that the artist uses the guitar as part of a series of thematic atmospheric tone poems based on the idea of wind and its forms and effects. The overall feel of the music is very ambient, with the guitar used less as a melody-maker, and more as a symphonic, electronic instrument, almost like a timescape. The orchestration includes atmospheric electronic soundscapes within which the artist creates mood music of the highest quality. I was absolutely fascinated by the CD on first hearing it, and it only gets better with each re-playing as I discover new nuances to the music. What a master of the guitar this man is. I highly recommend that you take a listen to this CD, and take a journey into the wind with Mr Wollo. This is a thinking person's delight!!!

Time Lines marks the return to Blue Note of one of the label's great originals, with Hill retaining the edgy intensity that marked such '60s masterpieces as Black Fire and Judgment. As pianist, composer, and bandleader, Hill has a special talent for creating structural tensions that stimulate fresh improvisations. You hear it in the title track as saxophonist Greg Tardy and trumpeter Charles Tolliver (another veteran of the 1960s) weave through Hill's minefield of compound rhythms and dissonant chords to make their own powerful statements. Tardy's mastery of clarinet and bass clarinet adds to Hill's rich palette of instrumental colors, while bassist John Hebert and drummer Eric McPherson contribute to the dynamic flow of polyrhythms. Whether it's the joyous playfulness of "Smooth," the taut and spiky "Ry Round 1," or the welling emotional depths of the solo piano version of "Malachi," every track bears the stamp of Hill's creativity and commitment. --Stuart Broomer
Customer Reviews:
A fitting swan-song to a genius of modern jazz piano.......2007-05-29
Blue Note Records founders Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff considered Andrew Hill to be "the next Thelonious Monk."
During his initial tenure with the label from 1963 to '70, Hill worked with some of the genre's most adventurous musicians, a factor which contributed to the pianist being able to immediately bring his musical vision to full fruition.
Through a string of classic records such as "Judgment!," "Smokestack" and "Point of Departure," to name just a few, Hill earned a well-deserved reputation as one of the most compelling composers and pianists to emerge in the post-bop era.
Returning to the newly re-launched Blue Note in 1989, Hill recorded a pair of albums that introduced saxophonist Greg Osby (who remains with the label 16 albums later). The past few years have seen him release a couple of wonderful discs - "Beautiful Day" and "Dusk" - for Palmetto.
Now at the age of 68 and battling cancer, the pianist comes full circle as he embarks on his third Blue Note era. Leading a quintet that includes front-line trumpeter Charles Tolliver and saxophonist/clarinetist Greg Tardy, along with a rhythm section of bassist John Herbert and drummer Eric McPherson, Hill's newest offering, "Time Lines" (due in stores Feb. 21) regales listeners with his engaging brand of supremely cerebral jazz, offering up a tantalizing introduction to the latest chapter of his storied career.
One of Hill's compositional calling cards is to eschew the obvious. Renowned as a master of "thinking man's" jazz, the pianist rewards astute listeners on these seven new original compositions as he continues to craft tunes that balance angular themes and interesting voicings against a spacious backdrop which imbues the proceedings with an air of understatement tempered with a gentle edge.
Among the many highlights is the title track, its buoyant lyricism and unfettered joy recalling South African pianist Abdullah Ibrahim. Cast in an unusual 11/8 time signature and propelled by McPherson's skittering drums, Hill punctuates the tune with single notes and tasty clusters. Even as he sits out most of Tardy's sax solo - a move only a master would conceive and employ - he greatly varies and enhances the aesthetic of the tune.
Elsewhere, he pays homage to friend and colleague Malachi Favors Maghostut, bassist and founding member of the legendary Art Ensemble of Chicago, as he bookends the disc with an opening ensemble version of "Malachi" and a poignant solo reading to close.
"Ry Round 1" and "Ry Round 2" epitomize the creative, improvisatory spirit of jazz, as well as its power and potential in the hands of masters. Recorded a week apart, these two ensemble versions of the music are vastly different - the former is dark and foreboding as it is built on a spare ostinato bass figure and in straight 4/4 time while the latter alternates between 5/4 and 4/4 and digs a deeper groove, evoking a considerably more playful mood.
This is an essential CD which should be a part of every worthwhile jazz listening library.
Listen..........2007-04-21
The music comes from hidden places and becomes illumination itself...
or maybe its just an uncharted journey of a liberated soul?
Listen. Feel.
Andrew Hill,
June 30, 1931-April 20, 2007 R.I.P.
Hats Off To Andrew.......2007-04-13
Wow. All seven quintet tracks are luxurious - in length, in texture, in melancholy. Greg Tardy's bass clarinet seems like the perfect marriage of Jimmy Hamilton and Eric Dolphy. Charles Tolliver is a revelation - where has he hid all these years? Eric McPherson's drums are brilliantly tuned: snare and toms like Roy Haynes, cymbals like Billy Higgins, bass drum like Peter Gabriel(!) - it's wonderful. Brings to mind certain tracks on the exquisite Greg Osby 2000 release "Invisible Hand" which features Andrew's playing prominently (along with two comps). Perhaps I'll think of more to add to this review later, probably not. Words fall far short in the service of attempts to describe such unique beauty, though I can share one serendipitous discovery... try pulling out some of your favorite Kurt Vonnegut while Time Lines makes the background rich, wallow in reflectivity, smile.
african american offering.......2007-02-27
the tune, melody, theme, of the title tune, time lines, i can't get out of my mind, the last noncommercial jazz tune that had that effect on me was miles davis' nefertiti. the song is african influenced.
other songs are mellow. the playing is superb, the solos by the horns, hill's playing simply elegant, hebert on bass joins mcpherson on drums, which is marvelous playing, mcpherson at times sounds as if he's beating african drums.
Jazz record of the year!.......2006-12-23
A stunning and gorgeous recording!! As good as any of his 60's Blue Note records.

This is one great cd of music on piano and clarinet with a lot of freedom but with focused melodic sense . Avant garde elements creep in through out. Just the right balance between composed and freedom done with class by classy artists.
