Amazon.com essential recording
It's a simple concept--the first dozen singles by New Order collected, a couple of them rerecorded--but it's also a totally entertaining seven-year history of the band that married British post-punk alienation to the relentless hedonism of the dance floor. The band's hits were always deeply unconventional (like the haunting "Blue Monday," essentially a seven-minute drum machine test with a short lyric that alluded to the Falklands War), but they were brilliant productions, layering dozens of electronic countermelodies and percussion tricks over Barney Sumner's uncertain warble and Peter Hook's lead bass parts. Though they're audio snapshots of the dance beats of their time, they've held up both as club classics and as idiosyncratic rock songs. --Douglas Wolk --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5 out of 5 stars magic disappearing CD.......2007-02-15

Anyone who says this is not one of the best CD's ever is an idiot. The music, although (I can't believe it) is 20 yrs old now, is still fresh and so ultimately energetic and dance inspiring ! It's the only CD I've bought at least 3 times and it keeps 'disappearing'.. I'll forgive my friends and others who must borrow and keep it forever... I'll keep buying it because it's that good I must keep it in my collection.. I'm finally going to wise-up and burn it to my Ipod.. Hopefully I can keep that :)

1 out of 5 stars Great........2006-12-26

In the 80s/90s, I used to despise so many artists because of musical blindness. Well, I was totally right about New order. They are among the most annoying bands on earth. Buy it and suffer .

5 out of 5 stars Perfection.......2006-11-20

Usually I try to not be excessively succinct, but for this one, I'll say the following:

This is an essential 2 Disc set. Rarely are compilations this excellent. Extended A-side of majestic proportions. B-sides of vast or trifled status. Combine it all and you get a perfect set.

5 out of 5 stars It's Substance...what else?.......2006-10-09

I've listened to this more times than I've told my Dad that I love him. Maybe my priorities are wrong but this album is practically a family member. A genius overview of New Order's early and mid-career that they should have stuck to on later compilations. The songs here are classics. Some of the best dance music ever made, some of the best rock and roll ever made and some of the best pop ever made with some of the best song titles ever. All put togther with something so sadly lacking in today's ugly world..a little thing called..class.

A masterpiece.

1 out of 5 stars What's all the fuss..........2006-09-24

Not terrible, but I don't get the hype. To me, it's just New Wave Disco-and Disco was bad in the 70's. Finally, what's this doing in a "Power Pop" category? No freaking way is this remotely Power Pop! What a disgrace to Power Pop lovers.

5 out of 5 stars new taste.......2007-07-06

I purchased this album on a lark because an ex-boyfriend has loved them and so I wanted to check them out. I absolutely love this record! My favorite songs are Digital and She's Lost Control. I listen to this when I'm cleaning my apt. because it gets me energized.

3 out of 5 stars Apples to Oranges.......2007-05-13

We really can't compare Joy Division to bands like New Order... they are very different. New Order is mostly synthesized, whereas this is very raw guitar, plus a lot darker. They are known as being influencial to the punk rock industry, paving the way for bands like The Cure.

This isn't my favorite album or band by far, but at the very least should be appreciated.

I wish the sound quality wasn't so poor, though. Makes the album a little difficult to jam to.

1 out of 5 stars Good.......2006-12-25

Hey, I suppose that Joy Division is so highly praised by critics because their singer has killed him self and was giving signs that he would do it in his music. Honestly speaking, bands like them are not that bad, but Punk came to tell that one should not take rock so seriously ( which I don't agree but then that was Punk's moto ) while critics tend to preach this, they take bands like Joy Division so seriously that we may find that they are as important as The Beatles for our pop culture, which they were not definitely. So, it is strange to see so many guys and girls that have never studied music to adore albums just because they are full of good poetry ( can't disagree )
but are rather simplistic musically speaking. I would rather enjoy the Sex Pistols or Ramones, they are the kind of punk that grabs me.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD to own.......2006-12-13

On this CD, Joy Division and Martin Hannett offer a mixture of rock-punk because it's more rock than punk with tracks like "Failures", "No Love Lost", "Leaders of men" and "Warsaw". It also includes more experimental digital sounds with "Transmission" and "Digital". Also, the song they're most known for, "Love will tear us apart". The sounds and lyrical content are very modern although dark, this record is timeless! It's for music lovers!

5 out of 5 stars Leaves me speechless.......2006-07-07

This is it. You've found it. Look no further. Because, my friends, music does not get any better than this. Every song, every lyric reaches down and soothes my darkest depths. I find myself at a loss of words because nothing can describe something so beautiful but the music itself. Give this cd patience. It's challenging but it grows, and it grows, and it grows. New Order does not even compare to the genious of Ian Curtis. Whatever possessed him to trancend all that seems humanly possible?

Punk ain't dumb. Not with a creative lineage that includes everything from the Clash to Nirvana. Bad Religion has been part of that history since 1980. Whatever they lack in instrumental virtuosity is made up for here in singer Greg Graffin's urgent two-minute manifestos on society and world politics. As on other Bad Religion releases in the '90s, No Substance preaches militant social consciousness to the punk masses, imploring the youth to "raise your voice!" There was more variety in Bad Religion's sound when guitarist Brett Gurewitz was still in the band, but the band has taken their relatively simple musical formula to a sophisticated level here, crafting tight, intelligent nuggets of punk. --Steve Appleford

4 out of 5 stars We are the priveliged elite.......2007-03-04

The departure of Mr. Brett in 1994 was a blow to Bad Religion without a doubt. Aside from losing his consistently catchy contributions to the records, it also feels sometimes like Greg may have not tried as hard, what with there being no competition for songwriting. That having been said, this actually stands as possibly the strongest of the trilogy of Brett-less records.

The lyricism is strong as on any other Bad Religion record, the musicianship is very good, (Hetson and Baker really working to make up for the loss of Mr. Brett) and the production is slick, but not overly so. Songs like "Voracious March of Godliness," "Raise Your Voice," and "Mediocre Minds" are all songs that could easily find their way onto a Bad Religion mix CD.

All said and done, this record gets a somewhat bad rep, mostly because of the Brett situation. Well worth the purchase.

3 out of 5 stars ITs Not to bad.......2007-02-16

1.Hear It- I Give it a 7/10 , I think this a fairly good songs its short Fast and fun.
2. Shades of truth - 6/10 Its an OK songs but its pretty long
3. All fantastic images - 8/1- Pretty good song Not to short not too longs. The lyrics are pretty good in this one
4. The Biggest killer in american history - 9/10 One of the best songs on the record(in my opinion) , I wish they released this as a single instead of "raise your voice" i think it would have been more successful. The only down side it the chorus is kind of repetitive.
5.No Substance-8/10 Really good lyrics, However i do not like the music in this one alot.
6.Raise Your Voice- 6/10 Its another OK songs In my opinion the should have put the version that was release as single (with a guest singer)
7.Showing the seeds of Utopia- 8/10 short fast and great lyrics.
8.The hippy killers- 7/10 pretty good song I like the lyrics alot more than the music, The whispers are pretty creepy thoe.
9.The end of the millennium address- 4/10 Its not the good in my opinion But some of the lines are really good.
10.The vicarious march of godliness- 6/10 Is really longs and the chorus kind of gets on my nerves
11.Mediocer Minds- 9/10 A grate songs fast Short and grate lyrics and grate music.
12.Victims of the Revolution- 6/10 ITs OK The music is interesting at some-points but boring at others lyrics are pretty good
13. Strange Denial- 7/10 Pretty good i like the music of the verses alot the chorus is pretty good too. THe lyrics are Good .
14.At the mercy of imbeciles -8/10 Grate song short fast and grate music and lyrics. Shortest song on the album
15. The same person - 7/10 Pretty good The chorus is worst part of the song but its not that bad, The verses are pretty good in my opinion
16.In So many ways- 7/10 pretty good it has a wierd felling to it .

The Booklet has some cool pictures. But its pretty short.
Over all i give the album 7/10 Its good but not grate its pretty long compared to some other albums. there are a lot of songs on the album and none of them suck badly.

4 out of 5 stars Paid Full Retail Price, and No Regrets.......2007-01-17

I can credit this album, with encouraging me to continue buy more BR albums, (having started with "Empire Strikes First").

I do not think this CD is such a great departure from BR's prior works as the Amazon critics seem to believe. You could move slow songs like "The Answer" from Generator - or "Struck a Nerve" from Recepie for Hate - onto here, and they'd fit right in.

There are a couple of throwaway tracks like "Hippy Killers" and "Biggest Killer in American History". (Very repetitive sounding). But I think the rest of the album stands up well, to the BR library.

5 out of 5 stars Very very good........2006-05-21

So many people give this album bad reviews. I think that most of it is just the "no Brett" prejudice, but the rest is probably just going along with everyone else's closed-mindedness. I just got this album, and it is AMAZING! It starts off with a great song, and it just keeps on delivering. The fact that Brett Gurewitz didn't write any songs on this album didn't make Greg's songs any less good. This album has tons of energy, catchy melodies, and amazing lyrics. It doesn't really sound like the typical Bad Religion album, but believe you me--it is DEFINITELY worth buying.

(Find and read the lyrics for The State Of The End Of Millenium Address and tell me that they don't make you scratch your head.)

5 out of 5 stars This album is incredible.......2006-04-15

Pay NO attention to the reviews dissing No Substance. I am a *huge* Bad Religion fan. Boots, singles, CDs, hell, I even have the early hard-to-find vinyl. AND I am a huge music fan in general with 3500+ CDs. This isn't my most favorite Bad Religion CD, not sure what that would be. BUT, this is the most listened to CD in my entire collection, by FAR.

No Substance is an amazing, just amazing recording (uh, except for "Hear It" which is commercial schlock). I have listened to this album literally hundreds of times. I cannot recommend it highly enough, especially "Mediocre Minds". This is one of the best BR CDs, and that's coming from a hardcore fan. Buy it. You won't regret it. I absolutely love this album.

Did I say this is THE most listened to CD in my *entire* collection, which ranges from punk to new age to folk to techno to metal to hippie jambands? Yes. I cannot recommend this highly enough, 5 stars isn't enough. Thoughtful, interesting, ferocious in places, just freakin' great.

Ignore the folks whining that it isn't Suffer or No Control or Generator. No Substance has rewards a-plenty for the listener who pays attention. Highly recommended.

Inspectah Deck's debut LP has been one of the most eagerly awaited in Wu-Tang's long history. As the Clan's vaunted lead hitter on pivotal posse cuts like "Triumph" and "Protect Ya Neck," Deck displays a gift for metaphoric mastery and complex rhyme schemes. In fact, few other MCs are more effective than Deck at creating evocative street-level images with single line strokes from his lyrical stylus. Line for line, Deck could easily outshine even fellow Wu members like Method Man or Raekwon, but in a new Wu era where RZA has opted out of handling the bulk of the group members' production, Deck loses out considerably. Uncontrolled Substance is nowhere as banal as GZA's Beneath the Surface, and there are some great tracks ("Femme Fatale," "9th Chamber"), but writ large, RZA's absence is the disc's more glaring shortcoming. How you gonna have the Wu's most venomous rhymer trying to come with an album without the clique's most accomplished beat chemist behind him? This is a great album, but it could have been far greater. --Oliver Wang

5 out of 5 stars Why try and Test, the Rebel INS?.......2006-12-26

This CD is undoubtly ill.INS has always been my favorite Wu-Tang member(along with GZA/Genius and Ghostface Killah)and he brings you the best play with words and his rhymes are filled with metaphors and skills.
The only thign wrong with this album is the lack of RZA produced tracks. He only comes through for "Movas N Shakers"(in which the beat isn't that great for RZA standards) and Friction(pretty good,Masta Killa rips it),which isn't enough.Of course Wu-related producers come throuigh to help(4th Disiple on 9th Chamber-EXCELLENT!) and True Master on R.E.C Room. Also Pete Rock pops in for Trouble Man,which the beat is pretty cool. Even Inspectah Deck himself produces some tracks which aren't half bad. But,to me its not about the beats, its about the ryhmes and use of wordplay aand,as expected,INS comes through for it.

3 out of 5 stars (3+half) The UNCONTROLLABLE Inspectah Deck's on the set!!.......2006-10-10

After blessing every Wu-Tang joint he was ever on it was only a matter of time before their talisman brought a solo set to the masses. The suprise was that it took so long. Now 1st things 1st, INS has always been tight with his wordplay, as sharp as a razor. Thankfully that doesnt change here at all, he never slacks on a single track. To me, and it is only my opinion, the production is where this album falls short. Around this time alotta questions were starting to be asked about the WU and whether they had lost their edge after afew bad solo albums and the very weak "Forever" and i think alotta tracks suffered from that. Afew weak beats by proven beatsmiths let down INS when he deserved more. Even PETE ROCK gave INS a weak beat by his standards, especially when you hear the track off PETE's "Soul Survivor" album that INS rips on and you realise what could have been. With all that being said there are enough dope moments here to please all hiphop fans. Tracks like "Movas & Shakers", "Uncontrolled Substance", "Elevation", "R.E.C. Room", "Friction", "Show N Prove" and "The Cause" all show INS' hunger and terrific wordplay and wonderful mic presence. Tracks like "Femme Fatale", "Forget Me Not", "Word On The Street" and "Lovin You" display his fantastic story-telling. The remaining joints are somewhat weaker than all of these in my opinion and take from the albums overall quality but its still a great addition to any hiphop fans collection.

5 out of 5 stars oh my oh my.......2006-08-07

this is the best wu tang cd since the solos in 1994,5,and 6.

so this, all those, exept tical, hahaha, and gravediggaz six feet deep and 36 chambers are all the must have wu cd's.

and i read a review that said it aint produced by rza, thats funny. its almost the only one worth ur money.

5 out of 5 stars Inspectah Deck - Uncontrolled Substance.......2006-05-14

GREAT album. Thats all I can say. One of my favorite members from Wu-Tang. This album provides so much variety that it will KEEP you listening all the time without getting bored of it! Let me get specific on the album now.

Lyric wise, INS brings the heat in EVERY track. Even the guest appearances in the album, THEY even bring lyrical heat. But I didnt find ONE track that I thought that INS was weak in. Some tracks hes more lyrical than others, but ever track has a story/point or good rhyme sceme to it. INS doesnt fail ONCE lyrically in this album, so when you get this, make sure to take note he doesnt fail lyrically.

Now, production wise, RZA produces a couple tracks but thats it. INS even produces a couple tracks for himself! Talent. And the beats that he makes for himself are hott! I think every single song on this album has at least a decent or better than decent beat, and some are classics. Some of my favorite beats are "Forget Me Not", "Uncontrolled Substance". I like the "9th Chamber" beat just for the fact thats its really grimey. I dont have to name all my favorites just notice all the beats are cracken. Real Wu-Tang music.

INS's first album, its cracken lyrically and production wise. I dont see NO reason why you would hate or even barely dislike this album. INS brings so much variety in this album its crazy. If your a Wu-Tang fan or a HIPHOP fan this album is a MUST buy!!!

5 out of 5 stars INS explodes!.......2006-03-10

I copped Uncontrolled Substance yesterday after reading a mountainload of reviews and asking what my friends thought of it.. and I was blown away immediatly by the first song, Movas & Shakers, which has an incredible beat and of course the Rebel's famous lyrics. Lyrically, he kills it on this album but that's to be expected from one a Wu-Tang member with one of the hottest flows.

Production wise, I am VERY pleased on what was made. It is not the conventional, stereotyped "Wu-Tang" grimey sound and I think this is one of its strengths. By choosing to employ funk-style beats INS has carved out a niche for himself. So what if he doesn't have RZA on the wax? All of RZA's disciples are here, INS produces a track and even Pete Rock (!!!!) produces some. Overall, if you're looking for the 'street level' production of albums like 36 Chambers or Tical then you will not find it here. Instead, it brings me back to Ghostface's "Ironman" and something like Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth's "The Main Ingredient".

Can't reccomend this CD enough.

I was fortunate to hear about this dude at a much respected record bar in south west London, called Soul Brother Records! And boy was I overjoyed. Sadly enough, because it is so difficult to find really good RnB/contemporary soul in this day and age, one has to really dig deep to find it. Unless of course you don't mind listening to the drivel on MTV!

Think about the day you heard Solo's first album and how good it made u feel. Think about how D'Angelo's Brownsugar album cheesed you off- as it was too short!! That is Big Brooklyn Red's Foreword right there. Think about Jodeci when they bust out Forever My Lady, and how Musiqsoulchild brought back the neo-classical soul sound with his first album. Think Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite...

Sadly, BBR won't be as widely listened to...and heard. He is signed to some small label that cannot (or can't be bothered) afford to distribute and market his music as they should. But for us die hard fans of pure RnB/Soul, we shall support him. The sound is pure. I rate this album 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Where Has He Been .......2005-12-23

I have had the pleasure of meeting this gentleman in person and I can only say he is Wonderful. I must admit that I had never heard of him before but by the time I had finished litening to his album I felt like I knew him. This artist certainly deseves more exposure. He is definately a well kept secret that needs to be told.

    Album Description

If there's any band that can incite a circle pit or inspire the kids to raise their fists and mosh till they can't mosh no more, it's certainly Betrayed. If there's any band that plays hardcore from the heart, it's definitely Betrayed. Betrayed are newly signed to Equal Vision and are armed with a brand new album, the fittingly titled Substance. There's nothing processed, homogenized, overthought, or stale about Substance. It's got a pulse, a vibe, and a heart. Betrayed and Substance favor fiery passion over flash, and substance over style. If there's one thing the current hardcore scene is lacking in 2006, it's a throbbing, beating heart that ignores image and encourages emotion. Thankfully, Betrayed are here to inject the scene and the youth of today with a much needed shot of loud, fast hardcore.

These boys have heart. I'm a huge huge fan of New York Hardcore. The scene is my life, I live it. I know that this isn't at all NYHC. It's not at all Warzone, Madball, H20, or another fav. of mine Sick Of It All by any means, but it is hardcore. Mad props out to these kids for keepin it real. True lyrics about facing the streets, drugs, and the cold hearted so- called friends that betray you in life and on the streets. These boys aren't from the Big Apple, but they in my since r part of the scene. We need more positive hardcore bands out. If only H2O would come up with another. Oh and mad props out to Madball and Sick Of It All for keepin it real on their latest album AGAIN.

    5 out of 5 stars TOP ALBUM.......2007-01-11

one of the best albums i bought last year, there are a hell of a lot of hardcore bands out there at the moment...i have to say quite a few of them sound kinda similiar!!!...not these guys,if you like CARRY ON, IGNITE, STAND AND FIGHT..treat yourself to this

5 out of 5 stars Finally Bringing Something Different.......2006-08-14

In my mind, the modern hardcore scene has become pretty boring - every new band these days is deadset on that youth crew sound and everything sounds monotonous - when I first learned of Betrayed and found out that they were a combination of Carry On and Champion I expected them to be a good band, but not cut out anything new - wow, how wrong was I. Betrayed defy typical notions of the hardcore scene today and although their songs still bring on old school circle pits, and crowd calls, they are not afraid to show off some artistic ability and play songs like Bring It to Life - Listen to the album, you will realize why they are the best band in hardcore right now - Recommended for fans of In My Eyes, Have Heart, Go It Alone

5 out of 5 stars HC album of the year.......2006-08-02

I listen to alot of hardcore. Hardcore is a way of life. If you had to buy just one hardcore album this year this would be the one. Keeping the old school sound and great hardfelt lyrics.

      Product Description

Train meets Alanis at a sleepover with U2's Bono. Finally, female rock with substance. This self-produced masterpiece layers edgy rock guitars over spacious orchestral arrangements. And the girl has something to say, too. Jen’s debut self-produced album, called "Ordinary Girl", is a project which she considers to be her life-statement. This album perfectly captures the emotional intensity of this multi-dimensional artist. "As long as I'm living life and doing what I love, I'll never run out of things to write about."

I first heard Esteban at a Border's bookstore in California. He captured my heart and my senses with the "Serenda to the Moon" album. His fingers create absolute magic on the piano keys and he talks to you through each of his notes. It's romantic, it's sad and happy all the same time.

      5 out of 5 stars Good Music.......2005-07-13

I am on my way to buying this cd... yes very late in doing so but at least am doing it... as mentioned in a previous review dj culture is their best cd, in opinion of course... but don't let copy protect stop you from buying great blank and jones cd's... that is quite possibly the worst excuse... they are great and just don't want people stealing their cd's (burning)... which has happened to me with dj culture and nightclubbing without my knowing untill later... so i have no problem with a copy protect... its about the artist(s) not whether you can burn the cd or not... and you may have noticed i gave this cd 5 stars without hearing it, solely because i am going off the only review that actually had to do with the music.

5 out of 5 stars This Is One SUBSTANCE I Will Abuse!!.......2002-11-22

Wow! What can I say? Blank and Jones "The Druids of Techno" have done it again! I am a Major Blank and Jones Fan and I have almost every cd of theirs I can get my hands on! Although this is not one of their best compliations, its more of a sombre pace, rather than fast paced, my favourite will always remain their; "DJ Culture" album. Substance has some of their best song titles on this cd from the up paced "Desire" to their hard core "Suburban Hell". I would reccomend first time fans of Blank and Jones to purchase the "DJ Culture" cd as it it has their best work! I give 5 stars for their consistancy of techno pleasure!!!

      1 out of 5 stars Substance.......2002-10-14

I'm surprise when I look first time to this album, especially the little warning below : this cd cannot played on computer cdrom ! what a surprise ! How can I play this cd ? I have no cd player at home, I just have computer with cd rom which usually I played my music on it. So I cancel to buy this album even I'm the Blank & Jones Big Fans (I have all their singles from their first performance.... before Desire, because Desire use the new cd protector). So I hate this cd !!

1 out of 5 stars Who cares, we are all guilty until proven innocent!.......2002-09-25

I will not buy this, or any other copy protected CD. It is ludicrous to accuse the entire world of copying CDs. I want to be able to rip my music to MP3 so that I can enjoy it at MY LEISURE---this does not make me a pirate.

      4 out of 5 stars A Very Good Album......BUT............2002-07-16

From a musical standpoint, I have nothing but good things to say about this album. Like each of Blank & Jones' previous efforts, it's upbeat, catchy, and altogether likable for those who prefer their trance music to be more along the lines of eurodance than hard-edged club music.

However, the reason I gave this album 4 stars instead of 5 is due to a technical issue that I have with the manufacture of this disc. Unlike most current CDs, this one is equipped with the new copy-protection scheme that the major record labels are beginning to implement (mostly overseas). So, being that I like to make compilation CDs for the car and listen to tunes on my mp3 player when traveling (or working out), that makes this CD practically useless to me. And, thus, I'm going to return it.

Bottom line: it's a great CD that's been badly handicapped by copy-protection. It's too bad that the major record labels think so little of us.....
