The Fixx-Shuttered Room-CD.......2007-06-18
In my opinion this is the best of The Fixx. Red skies (at night), Stand or fall, Shuttered room are some of their best and my personal favorites. Brings back the 80's I'm sort of fond of. If you like the groups, Fock of Seagulls (I Ran), Icehouse, The Cure, Depeche Mode, INXS, etc. You will probably really like this CD.
A CLASSIC.......2006-02-11
A classic album.Though rock became more commerical, the FIXX offered this album(CD) in the early 80's and was a breath of fresh air compared to a lot of stuff released at the time(and still is).It is a landmark in rock history. You know a few of the songs from radio airplay but the entire cd is fantastic.A must have for any collection regardless of your age.Why this band isn't at superstar status is beyond me,but that's another story.
A Fine 80's Band.......2003-11-18
The Fixx are one of the best bands that came out of the MTV-80's. These guys have great pop-rock songs with catchy guitar hooks, cool keyboards, and a very charismatic frontman in the form of Cy Curnin. And, very thankfully, the Fixx are still recording & touring to this day, with four of the original five band members firmly intact (only their bassist keeps changing). Their first album, 1982's "Shuttered Room," is a strong debut disc, featuring a pair of instant Fixx classics, "Stand Or Fall" and "Red Skies," but also contains other memorable rockers, like "Lost Planes," "Cameras In Paris," "I Live," and "The Fool," as well as the fun bonus track, "Sinking Island." This is a band that knows how to make intelligent keyboard-laden rock, and Cy Curnin's voice is very commanding. The Fixx would hit the commercial jackpot with their classic second album, "Reach The Beach," but "Shuttered Room" is an excellent beginning for this fine British band.
No particular comments about the new CD.......2003-11-05
I can't really hear any difference, but my ears were shot long ago, and my equipment is pedestrian at best. The additional song is OK, but I'll leave it up to Fixx fans whether to buy this a second time.
In the meantime, since the reviews didn't carry over, something needs to be said about the band and the album (or tape, we're talking a long time ago). The Fixx is one of the most talented bands out there playing this long together. Every one of their releases is chock full of outstanding songs, right up to the present day. They got their reputation as a 1980's modern rock/dance funk band, and that's unfortunate, because their best music is quite different from that.
This was the first, and while there are a few songs that are best left in the dust (particularly the first two), several others are classic, especially of course "Stand or Fall" and "Red Skies at Night", which should be familiar to anyone with twenty year-old radio ears. But my favorite songs here are "I Live" and "Cameras in Paris", which display what would be become Fixx trademarks, clever, entertaining lyrics and challenging song structures that require time to appreciate.
While not their best, Fixx maintained a high level of quality throughout all their works, and this is no exception. This belongs in anyone's collection, and while the same could be said of any Fixx CD, that fact simply illustrates the how impressive their discography truly is.

A likeable album.......2005-08-13
Shuttered Room--released in 1982--is the debut album from the Fixx. Along with the ten original tracks, there are two bonus tracks: "Sinking Island" and "Stand or Fall" (Extended Mix). The album's material is in a pop rock musical direction. The songwriting is good, the musicianship is tight, and the sound quality is pleasing. I enjoy Cy Curnin's distinctive vocals. I like Jamie West-Oram's guitar work and the keyboarding of Rupert Greenall. The songs I favor are "Stand or Fall," "Red Skies," and "I Live." The somber, well-written "Stand or Fall" starts off with an indelible, pretty two-note guitar melody from Oram; in addition, attractive singing from Curnin is supplied on the charming, unforgettable refrain. Both versions of "Stand or Fall" are worthy. The earnest, nicely crafted "Red Skies" exhibits a pleasing keyboard line from Greenall and dynamic vocals from Curnin--his vocal melody on the chorus is infectious; also, a new studio version of this composition is included on the Fixx's 1987 live album, React. The serious "I Live" features gratifying, industrious singing from Curnin during the refrain. The CD insert does not include the song lyrics but does sport a color photo of the band. The back of the CD jewel case also displays a black-and-white photo of the band. The disc is just over 48 minutes. Shuttered Room is a good piece of work, and it emits sophistication.
Rupert Hine, "Master Producer".......2004-06-23
This album, the first for The Fixx, would not be as memorable as it is without the excellent touches from Producer Rupert Hine. First off, for the casual fan of The Fixx, "The Ultimate Collection" is the way to go. Secondly, if you are looking for this band's best album you should pick up "Reach the Beach." "Reach the Beach," their second album, has much more technical songwriting and zero filler. As for this album, there are some standout tracks like "Red Skies" and "Stand or Fall" but the rest of the album doesn't reach those heights. This is a recording of peaks and valleys, the deepest valley being "Sinking Island" which is atrocious! But there are a few scattered semi-precious gems here like "Shuttered Room," "I Live," and the hypnotic "The Fool." I actually listen to this album more than "Reach the Beach" these days, having heard that breakthrough album dozens of times. This is a fun album filled with mechanical New Wave beats and some stellar production from Rupert Hine. Thank you.
New wave from the 80's!.......2002-09-04
There was a time when The Fixx was one of my favorite bands, and Shuttered Room was my favorite Fixx album. I recently bought this album for the second time since we now benefit from today's marvelous sound of digital compact disc. A lesser-known album from a distinctively new wave band, Shuttered Room contains many interesting musical arrangements and fun lyrics and rhythms. The songs that stand out for me are "The Strain," "Lost Planes," "I Live," "Red Skies," "The Fool," and the minor hit "Stand or Fall." It amazes me that it's been 20 years since the release of this album. Listening today, Shuttered Room retains the diacritical new wave sound from two decades past, but the music (especially the songs listed above) is still just as infectious as it used to be.
Classic, a little dark, but excellent album.......2002-06-28
I always thought the Fixx started out a little too mainstream, decided to do their own thing with their 2nd and 3rd albums and just happened to find some success, and then tried to embrace the mainstream with later albums - and feel flat on their faces. This album tries to cater to some of the mainstream, but clearly sets the path for the better albums 'Reach the Beach' and 'Phantoms'. It is definitely a classic album, with songs such as 'Stand or Fall' and 'Red Skies'. My fave is the title track. Albeit on the darker side of eighties pop, this is, overall, an excellent album.
Intense "art pop" from an important band........1999-05-20
As an album, this merits four stars (a full five-star rating being reserved for The Fixx's unparalleled masterpiece, 1984's haunting *Phantoms*). Few bands have combined this kind of psychological and political lyricism with music of equal weight and beauty. Cy Curnin, an emotive singer and challenging wordsmith, is backed by a quirky and inventive guitarist, a fluent and imaginative synth player, and a top-notch rhythm section. The Fixx was much more a proper "band" than many synth-oriented '80s acts -- no doubt one of the reasons it's still making records today. A strong anti-war theme pervades *Shuttered Room*, and several of the cuts -- in particular "Stand or Fall," "Red Skies," and the title track -- take on new meaning in light of the recent strife in the Balkans.
As a reissue, this gets three stars, down from four for two reasons. The first: adding "The Sinking Island" but leaving off "Time in a Glass," the inclusion of which would have allowed listeners to sequence the album as it appeared in the U.S. or as it first appeared in the U.K. The second reason: sub-par sound. While much better than the original CD issue by MCA, this release sounds thin and overly bright (relative to the fine-sounding U.S. and British LPs).
An extended version of the hit "Stand or Fall" is also included.
