Seven and the Ragged Tiger
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Seven & the Ragged Tiger is artier than Duran Duran's first two releases. "The Reflex" opens with one of the best bass-fueled intros ever, remaining more in the dance-pop arena than the rest of the album. Lyrically, the song contains one of the most memorable Duran Duran lines of all time, "Fl-Fl-Fl-Fl-Flex," which is reason enough to buy the whole stable. "Union of the Snake" is a mix of male ritual, slithering synths, and, again, big bad beats. Along with their first two albums, Seven & the Ragged Tiger is necessary to effectively complete the early Duran Duran experience. Interesting haircuts remain optional. --Steve Gdula --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Has its moments, but over it's just plain dull.......2007-01-25
I love Duran Duran and have ever since I heard their breakthrough hit Hungry Like the Wolf in 1982. They have made wonderful, fun, challenging music for almost thirty years now. Although Seven and the Ragged Tiger is one of their biggest selling albums, it is a creative misstep. Duran Duran and producer (the late) Alex Sadkin have buried elements of what made the first two Duan Duran albums so special -throbbing colorful basslines, sharp rhythms, cutting guitar lines - leaving little to replace them. The results sound like a muddle: lots of big empty spaces and weird exotic noises masking few catchy hooks or memorable musical ideas. Even the band's huge hit The Reflex had to be re-mixed to find radio airplay in 1984 - the lifeless version on this album will leave many listeners scratching their heads (The slicker "radio" version can be found on both Greatest or Decade).
A few highlights - New Moon on Monday, which boasts a strong chorus and great harmonies; Union of the Snake, a highly charged blast; and Shadows on Your Side, a song that stays truest to what most listeners loved about the first two Duran Duran albums.
Duran Duran records before and after Seven and the Ragged Tiger have often scaled great, giddy heights - this one just barely gets off the ground.
Sabbath Stone can bend over.......2006-04-19
"Seven and the Ragged Tiger" is so thrilling, I can't see why anyone would give it less than five stars. It's an album of exotic textures, interesting grooves, and genre-defying rhythms. You'd be stupid to miss it. And Sabbath Stone is stupid.
The album that made me convert to Ozzy at age 7.......2006-04-18
Duran Duran's third album Seven and the Ragged Tiger was released in the Fall of 1983.
This was the band's first album after the breakout success of Rio which took a year to take off in the US.
I am a rock music fan and when I was 7(back in 1983), in addition to listening to greats like Pink Floyd, The Eagles, Van Halen, AC/DC and so on but I was also listening to new wave acts like The Police, Men at Work and the Roxy Music facsimiles Duran Duran(who took their name from a character in Hanoi Jane Fonda's 1968 film Barberella).
Whilst I still like the former two New Wave acts plus The Cars, I grew not to like Duran Duran and only got the album for Union Of the Snake but I detested the #1 hit The Reflex and New Moon on Monday was done before. Cracks in the Pavement and Tiger Tiger just cry out 80s!!!!
This was the band's last US Top 10 album for many many years(until their fluke 1993 comeback) and was the last album before Simon Le Bon and company IMPLODED over music direction, personal and money differences.
Two weeks after I got this album, my older sister brough home for me Ozzy Osbourne's Bark At the Moon and after one listen to Bark at the Moon, I threw this album where it belongs, in the TRASH and I have avoided(except for a two week window in 2003 to try and warm up to and failed) these *ss-clowns!
The third time is the charm!.......2006-04-17
"Seven and the Ragged Tiger" is England's Fab Five's third album (Number one in the UK and top ten in America!), which is more avant garde and complex than anything we've ever heard before. There will NEVER be a song as brilliant as "Union of the Snake" or "The Reflex" and never will! Buy today. Simon, Nick, John, Roger, and Andy are geniuses!
In their own words:.......2006-01-22
John Taylor: "We were just drunk [on our new-found success] by this point. We were so into living the dream...and part of the dream was that you made at least one of your albums on the French Riveria."
Nick Rhodes: "I thought the thing was never going to get finished. It really took a long time. There was a lot of different feelings in the band about the direction we should take."
Simon LeBon: "We started off in the south of France, then we went to Mt. Surratt, came back to the U.K. briefly and ended up finishing it off in Austrailia...Sydney. It was a difficult time. It really was."
John Taylor: "We re-recorded it like three times. We did it once and said, 'Nah, this isn't right.' Did it again, said, 'Eh.'"
Nick Rhodes: "To me that album, more than any of them, on the surface of it seems like there's a lot of pretty songs on there, but then underneath there there's this sort of not quite controllable hysteria scratching away at the surface."

It's Hard to Follow 'RIO'.......2006-05-09
This is an album of mixed pleasures. Some great pop songs intersperced with some tracks that are at best B-Sides. Stand out tracks are New Moon on Monday, Union of the Snake, The Reflex (although this was remixed later as the band were unsure of this mix) and Seventh Stranger....The rest are forgettable and I am sure that the boys would agree, not anywhere near their best. It is always difficult to follow a classic album like RIO, and this does not compare. If you are an avid Duranie, you'll love it, otherwise not recommended.
Hype Hits All-time High.......2005-08-08
The title was fitting, ragged would desribe the band after the fever pitch hype surrounding them after Rio, the mini lp- Carnival, and the re-release of the original debut album. Like Rio, the band takes the listener to a different world. However, instead of a real place (Rio), Seven takes us to a fictional place. By the release of this album, the videos became a staple for marketing their music. Actually, the first full length video created (but never released)for New Moon On Monday was the first one (not MJ's "Thriller" as most believe). What I really appreciate about this album is the sound of it. Unlike anything ever released then or now. Track 1- The Reflex, too clever. Aside from Nile Rodgers dance re-mix, which blew my mind as well as everyone else's, the lyrics are clever, clever, clever. In fact, maybe too clever. (Two different stories, mixed into one. One story about the lonely child, the other about well,-sex.) The album version never appears on greatest hits compilations or box sets nor does it contain the fl-fl-fl-fl-flex. But, I liked the album version. #2 NEW MOON ON MONDAY- yes the guys toyed with the idea of being actors. Fortunately, I guess they decided not to follow in the footsteps of well, the Beatles. The song itself fooled me. When I first heard it I thought it sounded like David Bowie. Just a sample of Simon's unique singing talents. And as always the lyrics might just have you questioning what the song is about, but the music is timeless. #3 CRACKS IN THE PAVEMENT, this song really showed the difference between Rio & this album. A sure slow groove with a message. #4 I TAKE THE DICE- after the remix of "The Reflex" was getting played to the hilt on radio, DJ's seemed to be looking for a next release to play. Some played "The Seventh Stranger" while others played this tune. In a way, I Take The Dice, too could have been re-mixed. It's upbeat and again emulates the sound of this album as well as Simon's vocal abilities. #5 OF CRIME & PASSION- more or less the rock tune for this album, describes the topic DD takes on the most- relationships. Cool. #6 UNION OF THE SNAKE- the lead off single & video personafied the band as the surrealist of their era. Catchy little ditty with a definite different sound. I almost could picture a movie or something (like the Star Wars' bar scene). The monkey mix version is the best! #7 SHADOWS ON YOUR SIDE, a darker song, truly experimental. #8 TIGER, TIGER, just a simple intrumental and probably (except for Tel Aviv) their best one. It clearly indicates the overall sound of this album. #9 THE SEVENTH STRANGER- as mentioned this received quite a bit of airplay after The Reflex was getting overplayed on the airwaves. I enjoyed this song. Really a glimpse of things to come. The so called ballad song of this album, makes the listener think (deeply). The music is haunting. You will remember it. All in all, the fab-five delivered another reason to stay tuned- this isn't your ordinary glame-pop band.
the best album of the 1980s!!.......2003-07-20
I saw Duran Duran live at the Roxy this week, and though they didn't play any songs off this album, they still ROCKED!! "Seven and the Ragged Tiger" is everything you want in a pop album: great vocals, smart lyrics, awesome guitars. This album is even better than the overrated "Born in the USA" by Bruce Springsteen, who isn't anywhere near as talented as Simon LeBon and Nick Rhodes. Duran Duran are awesome and I really love this album!!
Why don't you use it?.......2003-04-26
This album rocks. Plain and simple. From the catchy "New Moon on Monday" to the mysterious "Seventh Stranger" to the original version of "The Reflex", this album shows Duran Duran's style slightly more matured than the first two albums. By the time this album was released they were riding a wave of global popularity. I wish "Seventh Stranger" had been released as a single, but they chose to go with the more radio-friendly, upbeat songs. I also would have liked to hear "Cracks in the Pavement" as a single, just for the line "Now I'm saying this in private/If I had a car I'd drive it (insane)"!
This album also gets bonus points with me for the eye-candy cover photo, they were certainly looking their finest (and hottest) on this one! :)
This is another must-have for any fan of 80's music!
Good but not Perfect.......2003-02-27
Super strong album, but a bit overdone. For perfection, try RIO.

I sent these three cd's to an old friend who was jonesing for some old D2. The first three albums in one place. What a find! durannies of the world unite!
DD Box Set.......2006-03-22
If you are a diehard DD fan, this is right up your alley! It was well worth the money to give my son a gift of the band he still thinks walks on water!
3 albums that span continents of style... A++.......2004-10-11
Who is this clown rohitrao who just wants to waste his time praising old-fart druggie droning and going after bands in totally different genres? Cripes, get a life! And deal with the fact that Gilmore played with these lads for a reason...
Duran Duran's first three albums cover more ground than Pink Floyd ever WILL! PinkF wrote a few Excellent #'s but will always stay stuck in their rut. DD have covered more ground in their careers, much less these 3 albums, than most bands EVER will.. try to deny that, goofus! These 3 DD albums tested the boundaries of sound, and where a band could go, while striking a chord with the world consciousness(Pink Floyd were never compared to the Beatles..).
The first CD shows a band jumping up to proclaim itself with exceptional zeal, the second was perhaps their masterpiece in bravado, excitement and breadth, and the 3rd perhaps suffers from overproduction and silly topics. Personally though, I enjoyed the ambiguous lyrics as I always appreciate mystery and impressionism. Stretch your audiences imagination, you'll both grow from the experience. And, to top things off, the last two songs on Seven and the Ragged Tiger (Tiger Tiger and Seventh Stranger) encompass as much atmosphere and intrigue as a whole Pink Floyd excursion, in 1/6 of the time; and THAT is much more palatable and effective than hours and hours in a PF daze.
5 stars easily, as a collection.

Customer Reviews:
Great Artwork! Great Sound! Enjoyable Listen!.......2005-12-01
Coming from a former Duran Duran hater, it's amazing how time weeds out the classics from the also-rans. This version of Duran Duran's 3rd studio album is really great. Not only has the sound quality been remastered for a great sound, the packaging in a mini-lp gatefold sleeve plus great liner notes booklet is in itself worth at least 3 stars. The quality of the tracks though a commercial hit does fall short of what they did on "Rio" but then again, it's really hard to top that already classic album and which would prove to be their best ever work. Given that, this album is a really enjoyable listen if you can get over the fact that much of the lyrics are rubbish as the musicianship is first rate. I think the bass player's running bass style is first class and he would warrant an honourable mention in any band. "New Moon on Monday" and "The Union of the Snake" are stand out tracks while the other tracks that never made it to single status are also quite good. If you are a fan, this is definitely the version to get. Great sound and design, what more can you ask for?
Nice artwork, too bad about the record..........2005-03-23
Really, I don't like this album much, but the repackaged CD with lyric sheet and photos missing since the original release on vinyl put back in are pretty fun. Buy this version if you're a fan of the band.
My Original Review:
The Third Album was supposed to be the triumphal, world-conquering follow-up to "Rio". Instead it comes across as over-produced smarmy pop with an overblown title and bad cover art to boot. This is the one D2 album I hardly ever listen to. "The Reflex" is a promising start, but fair warning, the album mix is distinctly different from the Nile Rodgers produced single remix that hit #1 on the charts. "New Moon On Monday" is okay, but then the tracks descend into insincere pop inanity. "Cracks in the Pavement" and "I take the Dice" are pure pablum filler. Side one grinds to a close with "Of Crime And Passion", a song trying so hard to be edgy it ultimately spins off the 'ol turntable. "Union of the Snake" is solid chart material, the strongest song with a solid Bowie bass beat, excellent percussion and some good horn work. "Shadows On Your Side" comes off as an overdone uptempo number that seems to get to the chorus inside of 10 seconds and repeat it every 30 seconds thereafter. The band finally take a breath and stretch their creativity on "Tiger Tiger", an evocative instrumental number that leads in to the big finish "The Seventh Stranger", which is one of my favorite ballad/atmospheric numbers from the band, and Andy Taylor's guitar solo theme work is gorgeous. The album ends abruptly, far short of it's intended goal. This album needs a serious "Director's Cut" style updating from Nick and Simon to bring it back to respectability. If they had included the "Is There Something I Should Know" single, the outstanding B-side "Secret Oktober" and the remixed single version of "The Reflex" they might have had something. Buy this version only if you have to have it to complete your collection.
ONE OF THE GREATEST ALBUMS OF ALL TIME.......2004-02-18
THIS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST ALBUMS OF ALL TIME. ALL THE SONGS ARE GREAT EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM. THIS GREAT ALBUM SPAWNED 3 GREAT SINGLES - THE REFLEX, NEW MOON ONMONDAY, AND UNION OF THE SNAKE. ALL OF THE SINGLES WERE MASSIVELY SUCCESSFULL. THIS ALBUM WENT PLATINUM SELLING OVER A MILLION COPIES. THIS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST ALBUMS OF ALL TIME. ANYONE WHO LISTENS TO THIS ALBUM WILL QUICKLY SEE WHY DURAN DURAN ARE ONE OF THE GREATEST BANDS IN HISTORY. DURAN DURAN ARE LEGENDS AND SUPER LEGENDS. THEY ARE TIMELESS WHO ARE GROWING INPOPULARITY YEAR AFTER YEAR, DECADE AFTER DECADE. I HIGHLY RECOMEND THIS GREAT ALBUM. THIS GREAT MASTERPIECE SHOULD BE IN EVERYONES COLLECTION.
Get this limited edition before it's gone!.......2004-01-19
This reissue of the classic Duran Duran album has arrived in perfect time as all the original group members are back together and touring for the first time in over a decade. Hearing this recording will take you back to your youth or if your younger it will get you familiar with one of the most popular British pop bands of the 80's. This cd has all the great songs you remember, the smash hits, "Reflex", "New Moon on Monday", and "Union of the snake". And even several awesome songs you probably have'nt heard in 15 years like, "Cracks in the Pavement" and "the Seventh Stranger". If your a fan of Duran Duran or of classic 80's rock you MUST get this cd!
Cracks in the Pavement Indeeed.......2003-09-26
Everything about this album bares witness to the excess Duran Duran had reached by this point in their career. Recorded several times and in several locations around the world. This album lacks the clear sense of style and sense of urgency that had made their first two albums so amazing.
This is the first album where their weakness for production versus songwriting overwhelms them, it is something that has continued to plague them to this day. The only song that truly stands out here is the opener "The Reflex", sure they had other "hits" off from it like "Union of the Snake", "New Moon On Monday", and many fans love the sentimenality of "The Seventh Stranger" but this album was mainly successful do to the teen-pop fanatacism that surrounded them at the time.
Unlike their self-titled debut and "Rio" albums "Seven and the Ragged Tiger" hasn't aged well at all. The only thing it really has going for it is the production of the late Alex Sadkin. These songs had been written and re-written so many times that the energy has been sapped from them and what you are left with are half-baked melodies, inane lyrics, all engullfed in layers and layers of synthesizers and production tricks.

Goodness gracious me........2004-04-18
When these came out they werent too bad, but now they are really dated. They dont seem to have stayed the test of time, they were well recorded but will never become classics. They are good for bringing back memories thats all.I'd rather save me money and spend it on a really nice hot chicken madras with onion bhagi's for starters.Beats fish and chips anytime.
coming undone?- wrap this up with more stuff.......2003-11-11
Hey,
I am all about the delicious collaborations of record execs sitting around trying to decide what to put in a collection.
The next eclectic group should comprise of old school durans-
all the b-sides, simon's solo work and other band member's forays into movie soundtracks.
I was a little unimpressed with this. What about a collection that appeals to fans who already own all the works? This is a great collection for the import purchaser only- keep it on a shelf, but wait for a better collection to play-something with the funk we all know and love.
Duran at their best!.......2001-04-26
Three of the best-selling albums of Duran history all together in one collection! First is Seven & the Ragged Tiger, an ingenius new wave-ish album, which in addition to the hits 'The Reflex', 'New Moon on Monday', and 'Union of the Snake' includes some of their greatest tracks, namely the haunting 'Seventh Stranger' and the dark 'Of Crime and Passion'. Next is the 1986 album, Notorious, their most funk-inspired album to date. It includes the title track as well as the hit 'Skin Trade' but the real jewel of this one is the dark 'Vertigo' or the melancholy 'A Matter of Feeling'. Finally, the band's 1993 top ten album 'Duran Duran 2 (the Wedding Album)' which includes the smash hits 'Ordinary World' and 'Come Undone', but is also one of their strongest overall to date. The jewels of this one are an amazing cover of the Velvet Underground's 'Femme Fatale' and the sexy and seductive 'Love Voodoo'. A seminole collection all around!
