Guitar Slinger

Editorial Reviews

These days, everybody and his daddy seems convinced that it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing, but this former Stray Cat got to that territory first, and still mines it as well as anyone. Guitar Slinger may well be the best of his Orchestra releases, if only because he takes center stage more often on such tunes as a spot-on cover of "A Town Without Pity" and the rousing "Rumble in Brighton." Setzer tips his hat--figuratively, of course, since a hat would mess those famed blond locks--to the original breed of swingin' cat on such tribute tunes as "Hey, Louis Prima" and "Sammy Davis City," both of which make the most of his 17-piece band. It's, like, gonesville. --David Sprague --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

3 out of 5 stars A Bit Of A Letdown.......2005-05-03

Perhaps I should have waited for a second listen before posting a review, but I needed to speak out here. The reviews, the title of the cd, and my liking of his other efforts I have purchased recently, made this cd a must for me to find. When i finally got my hands on it, I was disappointed. First the sound is recorded at much lower a volume than some of his other works. O.K. it's not a remasterd cd but it was recorded a lot more recently, so I was expecting better quality. The vocals as one poster stated was much better and clearer. However the guitar seemed pushed far back in the mix. His other cd's are better and bluesier.

5 out of 5 stars Strong Medicine.......2001-01-06

I've had this disc for a couple of years now and can't stop playing it. It's some of the most energised, wildest, hell-raising blues I've ever heard! Forget about those ramshackle mid-70s efforts: Johnny's in the very best company here. Largely self-produced, Johnny's cranked-up, turbo-charged playing is given free reign, with generous doses of his trademark slide, and those machine-gun speed solos that only he can deliver (who else can keep up?). The rhythm section is watertight, and while the rollicking keyboards take a back seat, they don't leave us asking that perennial question ("where's your brother???"). Tasteful horn arrangements are featured on a few tracks, but for me the real suprise of this recording is Johnny's improved vocals (compared to earlier efforts). They're more assured and even soulful at times (even when he's barking!), but typically gravel-toned and raucous. If there's anything missing here, well, it's an acoustic number, but hey, when was the last time a restaurant gave you a sample of everything on the menu? I've long been mystified why blues "desert island" lists never seem to include a Johnny Winter album. Surely there must be at least a few strong candidates! Well, this is my one. This is strong medicine, not the herbal variety, which I recommend unreservedly.

5 out of 5 stars Roaring Blues.......2000-10-03

I bought this album on cassette when it first came out after seeing Winter play the Austin Opry House back in the mid-80s. Now I've acquired it on CD and like it as much as ever! Winter's guitar and voice come out screaming at their macho best. I like the whole album, but particularly the defiant "It's My Life, Baby", the wailing blues of "Iodine in My Coffee", the howling "Mad Dog" and the anthem "My Soul". Johnny shows a sly sense of humor on "Trick Bag" and on "Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye". I can't imagine any lover of electric blues not liking this album which I consider to be among his all-round best. Throw it in the CD player when you are in the mood to roar and you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars King of Cool.......2007-01-05

Brian Setzer is obviously one of the top creative minds in the music industry. Nobody else could have mastered rockabilly and swing, let alone merge them together into a wonderful new form. If you like old-school rock or if you like swing/big band music...this is definately a "must have". Buy it, listen to it and enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars The House Is Rockin'.......2004-06-28

Even when he's swingin' he's rockin' too. This is Brian Setzer Orchestra's second album. The House Is Rockin' is absolutely not a swing title, but it's great rock 'n' roll with horns arrangement and one helluva opening title. There is a cover of Stray Cats' song (Rumble In Brighton) and (Every Time I Hear) That Mellow Saxophone. Gene Pitney's Town Without Pity is great. With a little help from his friend, joe Strummer (ex. The Clash) he wrote Ghost Radio and Sammy Davis City (which is probably the best title on album). My Baby Only Cares for Me and The Man With the Magic Touch are great swingin' titles. Album is produced by Phil Ramone.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!.......2004-04-04

If you love old fashioned rock and roll, and you love big band swing, nobody brings the two together better than Brian Setzer in Guitar Slinger. Setzer is so talented he IS music.

5 out of 5 stars Great Guitar Rock.......2003-01-25

Setzer continues to amaze. Really great guitar with a gritty
sound that is NOT irritating or 'too' loud. Wonderful to
travel by, you ain't gonna snooze while this cat is lose!

5 out of 5 stars One Cool Cat.......2002-08-08

Guitar Slinger is the second installment from the Brian Setzer Orchestra, and like the previous self-titled album, this one rocks as well. Setzer continues with his sound of rockabilly mixed with big band and intense energy. This album is a tour de force of Setzer's talent, from his writing three-quarters of the songs, arranging the orchestration of all the songs, and incredible guitar work. Setzer is one of the most underrated guitarists around, maybe because he's stuck in the past, but he is definitely a master of his instrument.

This album starts off on the right foot with a cover of the late, great Stevie Ray Vaughan's "The House Is Rockin'". I'm sure Stevie smiled on this jazzed up rendition full of horns. Only two more covers appear on this album, "Town Without Pity" and "(Every Time I Hear) That Mellow Saxophone". Both frame Setzer's musical ability and that great big band sound. He rocks out with "Hoodoo Voodoo Doll," "Rumble In Brighton" and "Johnny Kool". This is another album that mixes up-tempo rocking tunes with smooth, mellow songs.

If you've been following Setzer for a while, or just enjoy the BSO's rocking big band sound, this is definitely another album to add to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Makes You Wanna Quit Guitar Playing.......2005-03-17

I have had the fortunate opportunity to share the stage with this young man on a few occasions, as recently as March 13, 2005. He is a self-taught, incredible player. However, he has one thing that most semi-pro and even professional players do not have - SOUL. If you love the blues then do not hesitate to get this cd. Even better check out his web site at www.davegrossband.com and see him live!

5 out of 5 stars You Only Get One Chance to Say " I had his first CD".......2005-01-12

I love the blues and I play the blues, but as you will hear on his CD, Dave Gross takes it up a notch. It is like getting in on your favorite player of today, back when he was just emerging. This CD is raw blues, it is not dubbed up. Like the old blues, the guitar player and maybe one or two other musicians had to make the songs they played "fat". Dave's fresh and creative guitar work ,his outstanding drummer (more reliable than an atomic clock) and bass player who pushes the groove makes this CD swing. Buy it, and play it loud. And if at all possible GO SEE HIM.

5 out of 5 stars Shiny and Bright, Aluminum has it all!.......2001-09-21

Griffith shines on his current release, just like a brand new sheet of the CDs namesake. Aluminum will prove to be a classic from the guitarist in the Cowboy Mouth camp. 11 well crafted compositons make this CD a sleeping giant and a great accomplishment to seperate Griffith from the his previous work with both the Red rockers and Louisianas Cowboy Mouth. My favorite tracks are Southern Girls, Watered Down, Good News on the Way, and Keep Me Comin' Back(a great tune that brings back influences of the mid seventies in a good way). Nevertheless, each song has it's own character and are all great in each its own right. If this is what we are to expect from Griffith, a CD full of curve balls and changes-ups, there's no telling what the follow up will be like and I can't wait....RG

5 out of 5 stars Great oldies from the master........2006-02-22

Any Led Heads who may want to dig into early Jimmy Page could easily start with this collection. Excellent sound and quality recordings here that give you a taste of the virtuosity of one of the greats. Also recommend 'Jimmy's Back Pages' and 'Before the Balloon Went Up'. The sounds take me back to the early to mid-60's, before the ascension of the greatest heavy blues-rock group of all time.

5 out of 5 stars For anyone who enjoys great guitar.......2004-04-26

I would have to totally disagree with thebestboy's review of this CD. Jimmy Page is one of the greatest guitar players in history and his solo career, as well as his time in with Led Zeppelin completely outdoes any other guitar player of his generation. This CD is great for anyone who loves Jimmy or the great sounds that came out of the 60's and 70's

        3 out of 5 stars You'd Better Be a Real Fan.......2003-03-02

Of the guitarists of his time, Jimmy Page has to be one of the most overrated. Someone made a comparison to Hendrix which is a real joke as Hendrix who had more skill in his little finger on his right hand. His mates Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, and even Keith Richards could outplay him on a bad night. His genius lay in the creation of the New Yardbirds, aka Led Zepplin and his ability to get underaged groupies to do weird things. He was a solid and dependable player but there is little here that merits a second listen.

5 out of 5 stars Jimmy Page Was A Guitar God Before Starting Led Zeppelin.......2002-12-29

I've never heard such amazing guitar playing combined with 60s style music before! If you're a fan of Jimmy Page's, this album is a must have! I don't really know what style of music you have to like to like this album becuase it has bits and pieces of everything. I think it's worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Hip Young Guitar Slinger? don't let this fool you:).......2002-03-21

This CD was a surprise to me. Being a new fan to Zeppelin, Jimmy Page and being a fellow guitarist I was suprised not to find Zeppelin like material. Now don't get me wrong I read the other reviews so I was fully prepared to hear the worst. Instead I found the material that led the way for Page to create Zeppelin. Heck, he worked with most of the musicians in the sessions these songs were recored in on this album.
In one review it was stated that if you were or are a Zeppelin your not really going to like this album. I can see that because most off the material is similar to those of the likes of the Beatles, Buddy Holly or Richie Valines even Momma Cat(hehe), but what can I say this was the sound and those bands includings the artists on the album all came around the same time. So really anyone can enjoy this album if your tastes gear to this. This is only my opinion on british rock not american.
Most of this is on the first disc but when we reach disk two its different feel. The early work of Page, Clapton, and even Jeff Beck (Beck's slide guitar action in Steelin' puts shivers up my spin) are found on this disc and you begin to see how they revalutionized music as we know it. Not to be one sided about this second disc and single out only the greates but you also get a taste for John Mayall, The Allstars with Nicky Hopkins and Cyril Davies. John Mayall in my opinion puts BB to shame, but I love BB so no yelling at the moniter:) With Claptons assistence we all expirience blues evolution of the period (especially Claptons tracks with Page). From tracks 4 until 13 you get the same feel as the first disk but alittle more upbeat with some swing rock like The Fleurs De Lys. All in all disk two is my personal favorite.
Well we don't find much influence of Page on the first disk except for a few tracks(this beging a Jimmy Page titled CD)I found that I was very satisfied with this buy and learned a great deal more about music of that time and more about the progresion of the artists I admire and how Page really was a Hip Young Guitar Slinger.
My only advice is listen to what eatch review has to say and make your own judgment on wether you would like this album or not. Happy listening to those who do.

5 out of 5 stars A BREATH OF FRESH AIR.......2006-09-27

In this age of music being made available to listeners, Kathryn Grimm is a breath of fresh air. She's talented in writing, instrumentally, vocally as well as mixing and producing a disc. She's raw and gritty. She can rock with the best, or she can take the listener into the blues. It's somewhat eclectic, but exciting from beginning to end. I'd recommend anyone considering purchasing this disc do so whithout hesitation.
