And Out Come the Wolves

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Just as Green Day aped the Ramones, their contemporaries in this Southern California punk quartet aspired to be the Clash. But also like Green Day, Rancid's fresh approach and excellent songs (including the ska-punk MTV hit "Time Bomb" and the anthemic "Roots Radicals") rose far above tribute-band level. And poet Jim Carroll (The Basketball Diaries) adds spoken-word stream-of-consciousness to the dour "Junkyman." While 19 songs makes this 1995 CD drag on a bit too long, Wolves is evidence of punk rock's relevance a full two decades after the Sex Pistols. --Steve Knopper --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best .............2007-04-16

Just a great CD packed full of great punk songs. Sure the guy has a voice like a blown motor but it only adds to the brillance of their songwriting ability as it doesn't need to sound good to be good.

The album does not have any duds on it although I think Junkie Man is probably the weakest track and that in itself ain't too bad....

The highlights for me are: 'Olympia WA', 'Lock step and Gone', 'Daly City Train', 'Listed MIA', 'As wicked' and 'The Wars End'. The bass introduction to 'Journey to the End of the East Bay' is an absolute classic and one of my fav basslines along with 'Guns of Brixton' for punk genre.

I think the best thing about Rancid (and previously the Clash) is that they take you on a journey with their lyrics...they are honest, realistic and punchy...I never get sick of listening to this and this CD is my first pick on my i-pod when I have to fly....

If you are thinking what album to buy next ..buy this..it is pure quality and a deadset classic!!!

RANCID ROCKS!!!! GREAT FOR TRAINING AT THE GYM. IT MAKES YOU WANT TO BREAK STUFF.

...And Out Come The Wolves is a GREAT album. I'm not going to analyze it and talk about how silly yet historical punk mucic is, but Rancid is a great band, and this is a great CD. By the way, if you ever get a chance to see Rancid live, DO IT. best show I have ever seen.

4 out of 5 stars PUNK? IT"S BASIC ROCK AND THAT'S WHY I LIKE IT!.......2007-01-15

Despite the mohawks, the fake Brittish accents, the tattoos, the sneering and the corny lyrics you nonetheless still have the foundation for a good rock band.

It is easy to analyze Rancid in that they have effectively stole all of the essential elements from the 1970's punk bands. The aching vocals of the Clash, the crunch of the Sex Pistols, the bottom heavy sound of the Jam, the thick-toned ska of Madness and the sneer of Generation X to make a gumbo of the ingredients from the best of the past.

Is it a rip off? Maybe.

But, on the other hand, most music is derivative. If you consider punk a serious and historical form of music then it has to have an influence on other artists 30 years later.

Most or all of the great punk bands burned themselves out. With the exception of the Clash, none of them had any longitivity.

Rancid took the best elements of this coveted music and, essentially, did it better. They applied better songwriting, better musicianship, better production, more substance in the songwriting, etc.

It is silly to call it punk. Punk from the 70's was a reaction to the "fat" in the music business and lean times for the economic period. There are no poltical issues to substantially affect them.

I find this to be a good and enduring work. There are a lot of songs on this disc with a variety of styles. So much keeps on coming at you, song or after song.

Not everything is great but there are some quality, I mean killer, tunes here."Maxwell Murder" has a killer bass solo. "Roots Radicals" falls into a throbbing groove. "Time Bomb" is great and musically muscular ska rune. "Olympia WA" employs heartfelt and crackling voclas. "Lock Step" sounds like an amped up gospel song with it's call and response chorus. "Ruby, Soho" is a bit of power pop, the most commercial sounding song on the cd.

If the image of the band was that of just 4 normal looking poeple, I feel that the music would have received more accolades.

It is a quality work from a good band. Musically, theiy are doing a lot more here than even their 1970's muses. This is far from perfect but definitely a keeper!

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2006-11-10

rap, hip-hop, urban, soul, techno, and today's wannabe rock all can be compared to the juice that collects at the bottom of the trash can. This band is amazingly brilliant and this is one of their better albums... lars frederiksen's band is pretty good too. John,Scott, and Mike are all really gay though!

5 out of 5 stars First EP from this Austin, Texas band makes with the happy.......2007-04-27

Tired of dark, heavy indie rock about brakeups and breakdowns? "Raised by Wolves" is the perfect alternative for you. This 5 song EP makes with the happy without ever losing a beat. The title track sets the tone with it's fast drum beat and jangly guitar. Singer/Songwriter/Guitarist, Ramesh Srivasta knows how to write hooks and melodies guaranteed to keep you humming for days, and his lyrics, though often about brakeups and breakdowns are uplifting and confident. While they have garnered many comparisons to '80's acts like the Smiths (most probably because the second track, The Start of Something, sounds like it could easily be a Smith's B-side) more recent releases have shown Voxtrot are exploring and creating their own sound. This is an excellent introduction to a band that will soon be getting national attention. Finally, if you get a chance to see them live, don't miss it. I was fortunate enough to catch them at a small club, a day after they opened for Elefant in San Francisco. They were brilliant and did an incredible cover of "Love Vigilantes" by New Order.

5 out of 5 stars my new addiction.......2006-06-09

i saw this band open for elefant. they were actually better than elefant. their energy is so apparent on stage not to mention in their songs. all the songs are amazing and different and upbeat with wondrous and witty lyrics. they are reminiscent of the smiths, belle & sebastian and new order, amongst other great bands. i haven't been taken with a band like this in 5 years. they are definitely worth checking out.

5 out of 5 stars Shake your booty and hold your mama's hand!.......2006-04-30

This band is band of the new century for me! Great, catchy, fun, HAPPY; if you like good feeling smiths, cure etc you'll probably like these guys. I'm into new 80s stuff like the killers, bravery, hot hot heat, editors, etc... but I really, absolutely, positively LOVE these guys's style!!!!!! It's a change from the dark dancy, but you still wanna get down! If they combined their last two cds, it would have made for a great album!!!! Have a listen; i promise, you wont be sad.

5 out of 5 stars Makes Me Smile........2006-03-19

I absolutely love this stuff. The Start of Something and Raised by Wolves are so uplifting that it even makes me want get up and dance, and not a whole lot of music can do that. It's just so catchy. Also there are some slower songs like Long Haul and Wrecking Force that are interesting. I think this band has the potential to become the next big thing, but still, that might take away some of their charm if they were to be superstars, I think they are better off being themselves.

5 out of 5 stars this thing is great.......2006-03-17

ok, so i'm not actually a kid, i just had to click it because i don't have an account and whatnot. yes.
