A cathartic concerto of consciousness, it is the soundtrack of the soul.

About the Artist
Rhonda Lorence is a world-class violist and composer, one that the world may have never heard if not for a quirk of fate.

As a child, Rhonda was encouraged to pursue music by her mother, and often played around on the piano, experimenting with different musical patterns. Then in the fourth grade, Rhonda witnessed a musical presentation featuring stringed instruments at a school assembly. Inspired to take up the violin, she enrolled in the music program the next year.

But destiny dictated a... read more

Album Description
Winter Moon, the debut release by violist/composer Rhonda Lorence, is an elegant, multi-layered marriage of new age and neo-classical. The global influences evident in her arrangements are subtle and varied, from Celtic to Moroccan, Asian to Eastern European. They crossover classes as well as cultures, integrating gypsy and gentry. A cathartic concerto to altered consciousness, Winter Moon is the soundtrack of the soul.

When asked about her creative process, composer Rhonda Lorence acknowledges an intentional spiritual aim for her music. "I think the most important thing is that it inspires someone to fully listen, feel and experience the complexity of emotions embedded within it." Winter Moon is a compilation of sensations which demands more of the listener. Infused with passion and underlying tension, these compelling neo classical compositions require repeated listenings to dissect the strata of instrumental angst and wonder.

The first composition and title track, "Winter Moon," opens with a softly percussive harp-like flutter that falls gently upon the ear as the first viola theme rings out in a lush mid-range lament. Amidst sprightly chimes, the viola establishes the initial theme, and is soon accompanied by a cascade of warm strings. The viola is freed to explore variations on the theme, dancing through divergent harmonies to the constant rhythmic "snowfall."

Suddenly all is quiet, and the second movement begins. The theme is echoed, but now joined by livelier percussion as it morphs into a Moroccan promenade. The now uplifted theme returns in exuberant triumph, bouncing off the rhythm until the viola finally settles down, fully spent, and drifts off into the falling cadence once again.

Whether you listen casually or critically, you will discover nuances in this composers artistry that fill you with wonder and enchantment. You will, in fact, feel the intricacy of emotions embedded within Winter Moon, as Lorence’s stories become your own.

Granddaddy of the Hollywood studios, Paramount Pictures is rightfully proud of its century of contributions to both American cinema and the art of film scoring. But the first disc of this 43-track double-CD anthology merely hints at the studio's musical peaks, blithely skipping through its first seven decades in just 17 tracks. Indeed, the package as a whole seems more interested in marketing its post-'70s catalog of hits and blockbusters than it does in paying real homage to history and roots. Even rarities like Double Indemnity and The Lost Weekend are served up via modern budget-line rerecordings, as is Ennio Morricone's epochal Once upon a Time in the West). Contemporary recordings of Aaron Copland's rare score to The Heiress and Franz Waxman's great Sunset Blvd. fare better, but soundtrack fans may miss the originals. The studio's rich pop-crossover successes in the '60s are documented via Breakfast at Tiffany's "Moon River" and excerpts from Romeo and Juliet and Love Story, while successful franchises like Star Trek and Raiders also get their due. Too often the '90s-focused second disc only underscores some uncomfortable trends in contemporary scoring--orchestral nervous tics punctuated by booming crescendos, treacly piano Muzak--and makes one wonder if the music of The Rugrats Movie and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider are really film music milestones. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Great Movies have Great Soundtracks!.......2007-05-10

If you love movies and movie music, you can't go wrong with this two cd Paramount Anniversary set.

2 out of 5 stars Only Disc 1 Is Worth Anything.......2006-07-19

Normally I have a lot to say in my reviews, but not this time. The main problem with this collection is that all the most memorable film scores are just on one disc, with the second used mostly to play out stuff from the last ten years that, really, musically isn't very memorable and only includes three pieces anyone will recognize just because, like the movies they come from, they're based on old TV shows - The Addams Family, Star Trek, and Mission: Impossible.

And that brings up another problem. With all due respect to the late Jerry Goldsmith, who has provided some truly great classic movie scores, was it REALLY necessary to include TWO versions of the SAME Star Trek march in this collection? This seems evocative of the milk-it-for-all-its-worth attitude Paramount has had lately toward its now-tarnished crown-jewel franchise. Where's James Horner's theme music from Star Trek II and III? If they're gonna put Star Trek on here twice, they should have provided a little diversity. It wouldn't have taken much, I'm sure.

I'm sure that Paramount's had other films with far more memorable music (even Harold Faltermeyer's Top Gun Anthem could have helped on Disc 2). This just seems like a lazy attempt at something that really could have been great.

2 out of 5 stars More of a propaganda CD.......2002-10-30

There are some really great songs on this 2 CD set. However, those really great songs seem to be lightly interspersed amongst a large number of forgettable songs whose main purpose seems to be to remind you of those movies you enjoy(ed) so much.

It seems a little odd to me that out of 90 years of film making the most memorable scores have been largely released within the last few years. I was pleased to find themes from the Godfather, Indiana Jones and Witness. I was perplexed with the inclusion of songs from Rugrats, both Mission Impossible movies (one would have been more than enough) and Tomb Raider (memorable???).

This is my own personal bias, but I do prefer movie soundtracks that evoke a feeling of excitement. With this collection I just couldn't get excited. I kept finding myself being let down by songs that didn't in some way complement the preceeding song.

There are certainly some great tracks here, but overall I was disappointed. My advise would be to look elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Great selection of Film Hits!.......2002-09-25

This one was a pleasant surprise! I thought- how could any CD that had "Baby Elephant Walk" be all that good? This one is. Lots of great scores- classics and a few hidden treasures. After hearing the beautiful title score for "Children of a Lesser God", I had to buy the entire soundtrack - very soothing. There are a few that may seem too overplayed ("Love Story", "Raiders of the Lost Ark",), but most are a welcome addition to any compilation. Try NOT loving "Building the Barn" from "Witness" or the "Hymn to the Fallen" from "Saving Private Ryan". Hours of great listening.

2 out of 5 stars Older recordings, main themes only.......2002-08-27

This is a great album concept, but I really wish Paramount had re-recorded these scores as they deserve to be heard. The tracks range from 1944 to the present, and the older recordings sound just like the cleaned-up older recordings that they are.

I would also personally have enjoyed more "secondary" music themes (otherwise it becomes like reading book summaries that always only quote the opening paragraph), and I could easily have done without the "pop" tunes (like Baby Elephant Walk and the Rugrats theme). In fact, it would have been very nice to listen to an album comprised of tracks chosen for their strong musical value rather than apparently for their box office and/or hit song popularity. But, to be fair, that may be precisely what draws some people to this CD set.

Film score music constitutes the single most significant body of classical music of our time. I hope some of these tracks will entice listeners to buy entire soundtracks and listen to some of these works as a whole.

Alto saxophonist Art Pepper, a link from Los Angeles' burgeoning Central Avenue jazz scene in the '40s to the post-bop ferment of the '60s, was a survivor of his own hell-bent instincts and the general chaos of the jazz milieu when he enjoyed a heartening comeback in the late '70s. Like Charlie Parker, in whose shadow he had often labored, Pepper was a brilliant, often furious improvisor with a sentimental streak expressed in his fragile, moving ballads. This autumnal album fulfilled a desire shared with Bird--to set the smoky, elegiac timbre of Pepper's most carefully shaped lines against the clean foil of strings. 1980's Winter Moon establishes and sustains a middle-of-the- night atmosphere by hewing strictly to moody ballads, and giving Pepper a spare but plush backdrop of strings that allow him and a smartly chosen small group to shine on a mix of originals and covers culminating in his reading of the Hoagy Carmichael title song. --Sam Sutherland

5 out of 5 stars Art With Strings!!.......2007-05-13

On hearing "Our Song" after he just recorded it for this session, Art stated that he couldn't have done better than he did on that song- he couldn't understand why anyone wouldn't like it. This was a project that was dear to his heart and the whole project is above what you would normally expect from a "strings" album of a major jazz star. This recording was one of his best from his later period.

4 out of 5 stars Exquisite.......2006-06-22

This is a brilliant and beautiful record. Art's sweet-and-sour tone on alto (with a surprise turn on clarinet on "Blues in the Night") assures that there aren't any slips into sentimentality. The Bill Holman arrangements ("Our Song," "When the Sun Comes Out," "Blues in the Night," and the title tune) are superior to those by Jimmy Bond, but Art is masterful, no matter whose score he's playing.

5 out of 5 stars A mirror on genius.......2005-09-29

A critic once wrote of Art Pepper something to the effect that "he hasnt made a bad record". In my experience that is true. Winter Moon is a stellar collection of tunes which showcases the nearly unlimited talent of what might be described as the definitve alto sax player in jazz history. This one's a keeper which will entertain and, perhaps, enthrall the listener for years to come

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Sublime!.......2005-05-17

This is a classic album..one of the most moving, penetrating and down right mellow projects of Pepper's career. He was always talented, but this CD will put you in such a mellow, laidback mode, you'll wonder why you left it out of your collection all these years! I challenge anyone not to be moved and stirred by the tune "prisoner (Theme from the Eyes of Laura Mars)." It is so rich in texture and sound, it feels like the Earth is standing still and you're rotating around it...and "Winter Moon" just lifts you up and swaddles you in soft, melodic bliss! Plus, he gives you other chilled songs that will stir the sentimental dust lying dormant in your soul! Another favorite of mine "Our Song", it is so divine, I put it on repeat, always! Can't hear it just once!

I listen to this CD during long drives to no where in the Spring, lounging on the patio in the Summer, relaxing by the fireplace in the Winter or writing prose on a Sunday morning in the Fall! Since it is musical poetry, it always inspires me for it is indeed music for all seasons.

5 out of 5 stars Very good.......2003-12-03

Buy this NOW. This has to be one of the loveliest, most life affirming discs you'll ever hear. The five members of Ensemble Galilei are exceptional mistresses of their instruments, - fine musicians not just fine players. The music is varied, though with a preponderance of bounce and rhythm. The sound is simply wonderful, open, lively, analytical in the best sense, - with a fine acoustic at all times. Above all, this disc will make you feel good about life, the celts, the isles, the courts, and everything else. Superb.

Strictly speaking, this is not a Christmas CD, nor is it an especially gay/lesbian CD. The music will appeal to a wide range of people...that the artists are mostly gay/lesbian is incidental. I enjoyed all the music on this CD, but my favorites would have to be:

The Truth About Christmas - Lea Delaria offers a humourous look at what Christmas is really all about.

Just In Time For Christmas - Alright, this would have to be my favorite...especially since my husband and I met right before Christmas...14 years ago. "You showed me what Christmas is about!"

Change Of Heart - Holly Near updates this wonderful song that never fails to warm my heart.

I could go on, but let me just say Bill McKinley, Michael Callan and The Flirtations all make this a priceless addition to any collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, captures the Holiday Spirit not always happy.......1998-12-10

but always gay (atleast in this case). For many the Holiday season isn't a time of immense cheer. We find ourselves estranged from our friends and families, we are reminded of the ones we have lost, and we feel a bit side amongst the glittering lights. This album is for you. But, don't think that it is all depressing music, because there is also a very positive message of love and joy that flows through every song. We may not always be happy, but we are always gay.

Happy Holidays under the Winter Moon.

      5 out of 5 stars A delicately imaginative journey.......2002-11-29

Touching on the Celtic, the Renaissance and the Baroque, these six women interweave them into sumptuous improvisations. Ensemble Galilei consists of Liz Knowles on fiddle, Deborah Nuse on bagpipes and fiddle, Sarah Weiner on oboe, recorders and whistle, Sue Richards on harp, Carolyn Ann Surrick on gamba, and Jan Hagiwara on percussion. Their sound ranges from musing to celebratory and airy to earthy, but is characterized always by the easy elegance of musicians who have mastered their instruments. The musicians have this to say about themselves: "We are committed to making music fiercely. We find music that speaks deeply to us, and we honor the traditions and dialects of each musical language... We find the place where our personal history intersects the melody, bass, harmony or chords. Revealed in these musical conversations are the essential parts of our own humanity." This recording showcases feminine creativity in all its rousing and subtle beauty! Ensemble Galilei has two other recordings that I know of so far: "Come, Gentle Night: Music of Shakespeare's World" on the TELARC label, and "The Mystic and the Muse: Celebrating 600 Years of Women in Music" from Dorian.

It's very exciting to follow a group of musicians on their journey together, especially when that journey is made with heart, with fire, and with honor to tradition. Original tunes make easy friends with the traditional on this must-have CD. Love the Scollay's medley, for example, with The Dance Goes On as the last tune. It all works really well! The high quality of the sound itself, the strength of the original compositions, the sparkling arrangements and attention paid to choice of material all make this in my opinion the best EG so far. As a whole, it's great, but there are individual jewels here-- the mysterious Anna's Garden, the tender Cantigas, Liz Knowle's masterful delivery on anything, for example. Sue Richard's Aisling is just the best Sue Richards composition I've gotten to know yet. This piece provides a sumptuous musical (and magical) adventure, full of ideas to play with. Her work gives an added dimension to the collection. If you don't think Ensemble Galilei's work is groundbreaking, ask for this CD in your favorite music department, and watch the guy run around trying to figure out how it's categorized for display! It's really fun. "Ensemble Galilei...That's baroque, right? No! Should be under Celtic...no... uh, folk? Classical? Ensembles? Well, international? Okay, here it is, 'New!' Try it out, it's on the wall." No wonder he has trouble finding it. Their work is unique. It wouldn't be the same if this group of women didn't span decades in age, and possess wide differences in musical background. The group lives up to its commitment of "making music fiercely." Get it just for the cover photos! They're gorgeous.

      5 out of 5 stars A Musical Feast.......2001-03-10

The recordings of this talented group of women musicians just keep getting better and better. This CD is a rich blend of original and traditional Celtic material, from across the globe. The CD is like a multi-course banquet, with delicate harp solos by Sue Richards, spicy fiddling from Liz Knowles, savory and haunting Viola De Gamba licks from Carolyn Anderson Surrick. Whether I'm driving, cooking, or filing bills, I play "From the Isles to the Courts" and my work is easier, my journey more worthwhile. I've been a fan of Ensemble Galilei since I first heard them perform a few years ago, but they've outdone themselves this time. "From the Isles to the Courts" is truly a musical feast.

Too beautiful for words(but I'll give it my best shot), "Fairy Dreams - Magical Lullabies" is a soft, and soothing mix of traditonal folk lullabies, with a special added touch of warmth by Linda Ronstadt. It is music that will lull anybody into a beautiful state of relaxation, and would be a beautiful bonding experience for any parent and child. Just sit back in that rocker, hold your child in your lap and let this album work it's magical spell on you.

Opening with the instumental "Winter Light", Ronstadt's mesmerizing collaboration with esteemed composer Zbigniew Preisner("Three Colors Trilogy/The Decalogue"),you are already transfixed.New and wonderfullly sweet renditions of "Hush Little Baby","Moon and Me","All The World Is Sleeping","Dream a Beautiful Dream" and "Sleep Baby Sleep" are just a few of the songs that will stay with you for sometime afterwards.(See buying info for a complete list of songs, where you may also listen to some samples). You may even stay up and listen again long after the little ones are fast asleep.

This sweet collection of lullabies would be a welcome and unique gift for any new parents, children, or baby-sitting grandparents. One that will give hours of pleasure to all who listen to it.You may even fall in love with it even if there are no wee ones about.I did!

The CD(Big Blue Dog Records) is an excellent quality and delivers beautiful sound(and not a bad price either). There are 12 tracks in all ranging in time from 1:19 to 4:23, most being over 3 minutes.

        "I Bid You Goodnight".....enjoy...Laurie
