Songs from the Rain

Hothouse Flowers were still busking on the streets of Dublin when Bono saw them on Irish TV in 1986. He arranged for the young band to release its first single on U2's custom label, Mother Records, and the band's first two albums, 1988's People and 1990's Home, were successes in Europe and Australia even if they didn't make much headway in North America. After three years of global touring and songwriting, Hothouse Flowers released Songs from the Rain. They fall short again. Lead singer Liam O'Maonlai has an attractive tenor but it lacks Bono's siren edge, and O'Maonlai's delivery is too bland and ordinary to compensate. O'Maonlai's bandmates write Celtic-rock anthems with the requisite soaring melodies and galloping rhythms and hymns with the expected mystic imagery and lush harmonies, but it's all a bit too formulaic and humdrum to make much of an impression. Worst of all are the band's lyrics, whose soft-headed solipsism is obvious in lines like, "If you take the time to listen, there's a chance you will meet your soul" or "Let doubt be the furthest from our minds, so we can continue to be and know that we should be here." On this new album, Hothouse Flowers sound very little like the U2 of 1993 and too much like Firefall, Colorado's mellow-rockers of 1976. -- Geoffrey HimesCustomer Reviews:

Susan Graham - Songs of Ned Rorem

Contemporary composer Ned Rorem is typically likened to an American Schubert (living in Paris) for the fecundity, emotional range, and quality of his songs (though this represents only one facet of a prolific career). And Rorem's masterful 1998 cycle Evidence of Things Not Seen would seem to justify that reputation, as does this marvelous anthology from the Rorem songbook of the past half-century. The composer is fond of dividing musicians into the "German" and the "French," clearly identifying himself with the latter for the elusive sparkle and subtle play of shadows that characterize his art. What other kind of sensibility could "through-compose" Gertrude Stein's "I Am Rose" in a deftly perfect 27 seconds? Fortunately, American lyric mezzo Susan Graham intuitively understands this expressive aspect, as does pianist-partner Malcolm Martineau. Graham is constantly attentive to the marriage of music and text in the 32 songs here and phrases their little worlds into being with grace and wit. She can shade to a sweet vanishing point or allow her voice to blossom, orchidlike, into a dazzling profusion of colors. Few of these songs, which draw on the poetry of Walt Whitman, Theodore Roethke, Frank O'Hara, and many others, last more than two minutes. But their resonance lingers, whether in the haunting "Opus 101"--with its lean but potent string trio scoring--or the enigmatic "That Shadow, My Likeness" from Whitman. --Thomas MayCustomer Reviews:

Luckily, the current profusion of mezzo-sopranos doesn't leave one jaded to talented newcomers such as Angelika Kirchschalger. Besides looking like a fashion model, this young Austrian singer has a voice of such lustrous perfection that she would be as boring as Olga Borodina sometimes is were there not such an interesting musical intelligence at work. The program is all rarities and far less daunting than it appears. The Mahler songs are early, folk influenced pieces; though they have their dark edges, they aren't nearly as neurotic as some of his later work. Songs by his wife, Alma Maria Schindler-Mahler, reflect a highly adventurous musical spirit who had yet to find her individual voice. The Op. 38 Korngold songs remind us of the complex harmonic language toward which both composers were headed. Kirchschlager is close to ideal, and her German is flawless. More surprising, so is her English in the premiere recording of Korngold's disarmingly straightforward Songs of the Clown inspired by Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. Kirchschlager sings alternately with soaring rapture and hearty good humor. --David Patrick StearnsCustomer Reviews:

Although I also like Kirchschlager's lullabies CD ("When Night Falls"), this is the recording I keep coming back to for repeated listening. I think I've played it over 50 times now!
