Dummy

Editorial Reviews

The collaboration of studio whiz Geoff Barrow and singer Beth Gibbons, Dummy was made at the same time as a short film noir called "To Kill a Dead Man," and the same approach--gloomy, tormented, and wildly melodramatic--permeates the album. "Sour Times" (the hit in which Gibbons cries, again and again, "Nobody loves me, it's true") and the more cryptic "Glory Box" are the linchpins of the album, defining its sound: dark flashes of old soul and film music, dehumanized electronic bleeps, Gibbons emoting like she's consumed by shame, and a bass-and-beat pulse derived from the slow bump and grind of the Bristol scene that spawned Barrow's old collaborators, Massive Attack. --Douglas Wolk --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

What Operation Ivy is to the latter-day ska revival, Gogol Bordello is to the increasingly popular revival of Eastern European music. Blending gypsy rhythms with the intensity of alternative-rock, metal (and even rap), the group is justly renown for their charged live performances. The title track is a lovely mix of Balkan strings with pleasant screams from lead singer/ shouter Eugene Hutz. If only more of the songs followed its lead. As a whole, the album sounds like Leftie bumper stickers set to vaguely aggro "gypsy rock." "My Strange Uncles from Abroad" makes its political statement in a personal and affecting manner, but other tunes such as "Forces of Victory" are merely affected. It's hard not to agree with their world view or love for the woozy sounds of Eastern Europe. But on this album, GB make the Dead Kennedys seem subtle. And it would be nice if there were more variety to their sound. Perhaps they should collaborate with Beirut, Muzsikas, or Hawk and a Hacksaw next time? --Mike McGonigal

Album Description

Gogol Bordello has been breaking down musical barriers since 1999 with a supercharged music based on a brutal gypsy two step rhythm that sounds like an Eastern European cousin of ska, augmented by punk, metal, rap, flamenco, roots reggae, Italian spaghetti western twang, dub, and other sounds generated by gypsies and rebels from across the globe. This is intense transglobal rebel rock, not light headed world fusion pop. It's about believing that music and art can transform negative energy to positive and inspire individual intelligence.

5 out of 5 stars THIS ALBUM ROCKS!!!.......2007-07-23

This band is only getting better and better. Their melodies and instrumentation is really tightening up and I truly cannot get enough of this album! ...listen to it a few times and you won't be able to get the songs out of your head. THIS IS GREAT MUSIC PEOPLE!

4 out of 5 stars Refreshing........2007-07-10

As the Pogues once fused Irish folk with punk rock, so Gogol Bordello do the same with fiery Balkan gipsy music.
Although a formidable live presence, the New York band have been hit and miss on record.
Super Taranta! is a step forward. Roaring choruses are interspersed with manic violins, dub interludes and raucous polemics growled by luxuriantly moustachioed frontman Eugene Hutz.
"Gogol Bordello"'s red-blooded passion is refreshing, and they finally have another batch of boisterous singalongs to match it.
This 'gypsy punk' cacophony is all those times rolled into one.
Party on, dudes !

4 out of 5 stars Dancing Taranta.......2007-07-10

Gogol Bordello hit the big time with their last album of raucous gypsy-punk, which coincided with frontman Eugene Hutz's screen debut.

And they stick to their past sound in "Super Taranta!" -- a mad, frenetic ride splattered with heavy doses of Balkan folk music. Their sound and vibe don't shift too much in this one, but their energy and wildness hasn't failed them, or their kooky blend of gypsy and Pogues-style rock'n'roll.

"If we are here not to do/what you and I wanna do?/And go for rubber, crazy with it/why the hell we are livin' here? DAH!" Eugene Hutz calls out a capella...

... just before the music lapses into a swaying, colourful Balkan melody... which goes into fast-forward about halfway through. Hutz is roaring and growning about how "there were never any good old days/they are today, they are tomorrow!/It's a stupid thing to say" as the music revs around him.

It gets even more energetic in the wild festival sound of "Wonderlust King," and the driving bass-rocker "Zina Marina." With those done, they spin off into a series of energetic Balkan rockers: accordion pop, jibbering fiddlerock, darkly gleeful punk, wailing guitar laments, and what sounds like the theme song to a gypsy James Bond movie.

It has to be admitted, Gogol Bordello hasn't really changed their sound much. Not that stops it from being fun frenetic, colourful, slightly messy and very insane, without a shred of self-consciousness. It's a Jackson Pollock of Balkan noise.

But "Super Taranta" does adjust their sound a bit -- there's a bit more gypsy in their music, and a few bits less punk, with tighter melodies than before. We get a tangle of raging, twining guitar and bass (and Eliot Ferguson's solid drums) driving the melodies along, but often they're swathed in dancey fiddle and blaring accordion. It's a pretty wild ride, all around.

And Hutz provides practically all the singing himself, in a voice that always sounds like he's about to pop a vocal cord. Raw, rough, untamed. He growls, wails, howls, and roars out his political, party-hearty lyrics: "My strange uncles from beyond/I'll meet 'em on the cosmos street/and we will drink to how we told/to never trust a plastic beat!"

"Super Taranta" is the sort of music that gets your heart racing and adrenaline shooting. A raucous, wild party album for an East European festival.

4 out of 5 stars a mighty trip (hop).......2007-05-14

portishead rocks!

but the funny thing about this cd, with its echoing bass and drum lines, and the ghostly echoing lead vocals is that i love each song so much, i can't distinguish one from the other.

this is not to say there is a sameness in the music. each track has its own character. but i swear, i don't remember a single name as i write this.

5 out of 5 stars Still ahead of its time........2007-04-22

Portishead is the great tease of 90s music. Beth Gibbons continues to record, but Portishead created such complex and lush soundscapes that their limited catalog is simultaneously disappointing and sacrosanct.

The beats and mix of instrumentation, the biting torch song lyrics and the haunting electronic synth bed are still sonically on the cutting edge of what artists are creating 10-12 years later.

This album is full of languid trip hop beats that contrast well with Beth's tortured vocals.

A must own for serious rock fans

5 out of 5 stars Portishead - DUMMY.......2007-04-06

Amazing. Beth Gibbons voice has a wide range on this CD. Dummy is powerful and yet then has a sound that is soothingly hypnotic. This is a CD that I would recommend for anyone to purchase. I enjoy all of their albums though this has become an all-time favorite.

4 out of 5 stars Such a trip!.......2007-02-19

This album carries this deep vague element where you don't know and you don't bother yourself to know, you just sit there, listen and feel the music's cross over,it has this modern gothic sense,at times it's sensual and at times it's disturbing, and that's the secret of this album,in a way it portrays women's emotions through the beats and lyrics. It's more of the subconscious mind kicking in than the conscious mind. It's a slick album that awakens the senses, you don't skip the tracks, you simply let it play, you don't know which one or what kind or where from, like i said, you just listen...

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2007-02-13

I wonderful blend of hip hop beats with trippy sound scapes. The vocals are amazing and heart fealt. Definately a five star album.

In my first experience of Gogol Bordello, a friend layed a track on me, had me listen to it, loud, headphones on, without any explanation. Which, I must say in retrospect was just wrong. This album requires a full Surgeon General's Warning, advising those with a proclivity towards sensory induced migraines or temporal lobe siezures to lay down the iPod and step away. I mean, I don't want to say this highly energetic music is bad, but I sure don't have the correct anti-siezure meds to get through it. So, enjoy. It's all yours.

4 out of 5 stars loud and beautiful.......2007-01-05

I had never actually heard of Gogol Bordello until I read a review in a magazine about them. I decided to check them out because the idea of Gypsy Punk intrigued me. I'm usually up for any type of music so I didn't hesitate to try them out. I was glad I did. The music is all so infectious that it's hard not to like them. Song after song I never grew tired of the unique blend of all the ingredients that make this album something you wont come upon very often in life.

This is the second album from the Los Angeles based octet, Flogging Molly. Taking influence from their Irish roots and the sound of the Californian punk scene, 'Drunken Lullabies'is a mix of brash punk rock guitars, violins, whistles and accordians. The band are often compared to the Pogues and fellow punk band, The Dropkick Murphys.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite CD.......2007-06-17

This is Flogging Molly at their absolute best. Every track is great. What else is there to say. Great music by a great band. I never get tired of this recording.

4 out of 5 stars Dave King from Fastway on vocals!!!!.......2007-04-03

I did a search on Fastway to see what Dave King (ex vocalist from the blues metal band Fastway...from the '80's) was up to these days and ran across a comment that he was singing for a band called Flogging Molly. I heard some sample clips and honestly I don't think , from what I heard anway, that he sounds anything like he did on the Fastway albums. That's not a good or bad thing...just my observation. I'll listen to a few more, but I'd like to hear him wail on a song or two to compare his voice to that from the '80's. Don't get me wrong, this stuff will keep your feet movin'. I enjoyed what I have heard. I just need to listen to some more tracks. I mainly wrote this review to inform any Fastway fans out there who may be wondering whatever became of good ole Dave. I'm glad he has found solice in something he obviously enjoys doing. Keep on keepin' on!

4 out of 5 stars My first Celtic Rock CD.......2006-12-07

I heard the title track from this CD back in Fall of 2004, and instantly became a Celtic Rock fan. I began a quest to find as much comparable and similar music as I could. I will say that this is about where I draw the line in terms of how much "punk" style I can deal with in my Celtic Rock. The vocals are a little harsh sounding, but the music is lively and enjoyable enough to make up for it. For me it was a good place to start. If you like Irish-style music and can deal with a little hard rock, you will like this.

5 out of 5 stars If its Flogging Molly, Its good.......2006-11-10

My favorite album is Swagger but this one is great too. You can't go wrong with any Flogging Molly.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best bands of all time........2006-09-25

I never really was into punk music too much. I thought it was too much screaming, and not enough instrumentation. THen, I discovered Flogging Molly, one of the greatest things to ever happen. I listened to Drunken Lullabies, and was immedietely hooked on this band. THis is an amazing CD that truly deserves recognition. This was the first Flogging Molly CD I listened to, and got me completely hooked on this Irish/Folksy punk band.
Track by Track:
1. "Drunken Lullabies": Brilliant opening, with a cool sounding banjo in the beginning, an awesome fiddle, and some great lyrics. 10/10
2. "Whats Left of the Flag": Another awesome song, with even better lyrics than drunken lullabies. Its not as catchy musically, but only barely so. Many consider this one of their best because of its bitter lyrics. Again, a great violin, and some really good singing. 9.5/10
3. "May the living be dead in our wake": Its similar sounding to the first two, except instead of a violin, there's a flute, which makes an awesome sound. Its still fast paced and upbeat, but more soothing than the first two songs. 9/10
4. "If I ever leave this world alive": A slow ballad that is remarkably well done. After three fast songs, it may not seem as good, but give this song some time, and you'll enjoy it. The singing is excellent here, showing Dave King's vocal power and range. 8/10
5. "The Kilburn High Road": Again, another fast paced one with a killer guitar solo, and another flute. Similar sounding to "May the living..." with a VERY catchy chorus that I always find myself singing. 9/10
6. "Rebels of a sacred heart": This is a different style song. It has a slow opening that may sound not so good, but it has an intensely catchy chorus, and if you give it several listens, it is excellent. Its long, but definetely a brilliant addition. 9/10
7. "Swagger": One of the weaker songs of the album. It is completely instrumental, with only one line that means nothing. However cool the melody is, its too repetitive to be good. THe guitar is a treat here, but again, too repetitive. Luckily its short. 6/10
8. "Cruel Mistress": There's a change of singers here, but the song is still instrumentally amazing. I don't care much for the bass player singing, I think Dave King is a lot better, but this guy provides a more sinister and evil sort of sound, and the whole songs sounds very pirate like and kind of catchy. Its not the best, but still pretty well done. 7.5/10
9. "Death Valley Queen": This is one of my personal favorites. The violin is very well done here, and despite the fact that its a slow song, which may turn people away, the lyrics are extraordinary, about a lost love. I love this song. 9/10
10. "Another Bag of Bricks": THis one sounds arabian and asian with the accordian opening it, and is different and cool. Dave King has a more sinister tone in his voice, it kind of reminds me of "Cruel MIstress". Its better though, and certainly a break from the style of the first three songs. Again, its good, but not excellent. 8/10
11. "The Rare Ould Times": Many consider this song filler, but I love the chorus. The singing/lyrics here are great, although there's not too much in the melody. Like "Cruel MIstress", its good, but not great. 7.5/10
12. "The Son Never Shines": THis is a ballad, and personally, I don't like it. Its too slow, and rather boring. THe singing is good, but the melody, instrumentation is too boring for me. Overall, a weak finish. 5/10.

However, despite a couple blemishes (The Son Never Shines, Swagger) this album is amazing. Definetely, if you like music with great melodies, and yet still a upbeat feel, this is a brilliant album.

Album Description

The highly anticipated full-length follow-up to 2002's "Drunken Lullabies". Flogging Molly continue to breed traditional Irish influences and heavy-hearted storytelling with brazen, barn-burning punk rock. At the same time, the ballads that have become welcome staples to their live show (giving the audience a break from the frenzy) are also stronger than ever. Look for a couple surprises this time around, such as a Cajun vibe on "Tomorrow Comes A Day Too Soon", and a guest appearance by Lucinda Williams on "Factory Girls".

this is definetly an amazing irish cd with a unique twist of punk.....it is truly amazing and you will enjoy every second of it

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-05-19

Flogging Molly is perhaps the most *fun* band I have ever listened to. From their lyrics to their back beat, just about any song by them is sure to help you out with that adrenaline rush, which is why I have them set as my go-to band when I step onto the Eliptical at the gym. Within A Mile Of Home really delivered, even with a slightly different sound, and I was so pleasantly surprised to hear the old Irish drinking song "Whisky On A Sunday" threaded into "Factory Girls" and "Tobacco Island" is just fantastic. I buy Flogging Molly CD's for my friends as birthday and Christmas presents because I'm always trying to spread the good word about this group.

4 out of 5 stars Irish rock.......2007-04-05

I saw this band live at RFK and immediately ordered two of the CDs. They were fantastic live, and I love their sound on the CDs. I'm going to get more to give as gifts to my Irish relatives!

5 out of 5 stars fantastic album.......2007-02-06

Not much needs to be said:

Dave King and company know what works for them, and they continue to do it in this album. Dave, while sporting a little more pudge (and in fact, lately he looks like a young version of Colonel Sanders) still wails, keens, pleas, and shouts as well as ever.

It's hard to call some tracks "favorites" because I like them all, but "whistles the wind" and "Seven Deadly Sins" do seem to stick in my head.

If you like the Pogues, Dropkick Murphys, or any other Flogging Molly, you will like "Within a Mile of Home"

5 out of 5 stars Same Ol' Flogging Molly.......2006-12-18

I heard someone attack this CD for being more of the same. Well, I give it five stars because it is more of the same. Let's face it, when the first two albums were incredible, there is not a problem in following the same recipe. The two standout songs are "Screaming at the Wailing Wall" and the title track. This is the only band that I will ever mention in the same breath as the Pogues.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as other flogging molly albums, but has some gems.......2006-12-15

This was the last of the Flogging Molly albums that I listened to, although it is their first. You can kind of tell, as Dave King's vocals aren't always as good as the other two albums. However, thats no damper on what is still a great album by one of the most unique bands ever.
Track by track:
1. Salty Dog - 9/10 - A good catchy opening song with some great lyrics, has a nice pirate feel to it, I love the fiddle in this song.
2. Selfish Man - 8.5/10 - Again, I like the fiddle, espeically the opening. Its not as good as the first song, but nothing that bad about it, this is a well made song, good lyrics, instrumentation.
3. The Worst Day Since Yesterday - 2/10 - To be honest, this one put me straight to sleep, it gets so boring and repetitive, and its a really bad ballad, if you want a good ballad, listen to Wistles the Wind on the other album, or, go a little farther down here, and listen to These Exiled Years. This was a good effort I suppose, but really, pretty boring.
4. Every Dog Has its Day - 8.5/10 - A lot like Selfish Man, in the sense that the fiddle is cool, and the lyrics are well written. Again, its about pirates, but its not really as "piratey" as Salty Dog, I guess cause he doesn't go with the accent on this one. STill, a good song.
5. Life in a Tenement Square - 9/10 - I really like this song, its a bid sad, but the flute is very good here, it gives it a different vibe than the previous songs.
6. The Ol Beggars Bush - 10/10 - One of my favorites on this CD, the tune is incredibly catchy, the flute is AWESOME, the lyrics are very good too. I can never get the opening out of my head, very nice flute entrance.
7. The Likes of You Again - 8.5/10 - Good violin fast pacedness, the opening is slow and emotional, then transfers into the fast part, I don't think the fast part is as good as some of the other songs here (Slaty Dog, Selfish Man, Every Dog), but its not bad, the violin there is very catchy once again.
8. Black Friday Rule - 9.5/10 - The full tale of Flogging Molly, their signature solo/live song. I don't give this a 10 because I like the live version on Whiskey album better, but this is a very good song, tells about how King came to "Californ-e-i-a". Very good solos.
9. Grace of God do I - 7/10 - I admit, Dave King's voice is good, but I always find myself skipping this song. His vocals do shine, but this song has no instrumentation, just a vocal solo, and the reason I love Flogging Molly is because of the instruments, therefore, I don't like this song too much.
10. Devil's Dance Floor - 10/10 - My favorite on the CD, amazing song, truly, still, I think its my favorite Flogging Molly Song (ok, maybe a toss up between this one and Seven Deadly Sins), but really, this song is amazing. Great vocals, great lyrics, great flute, it just makes you want to get up and dance, even if like me, you suck at dancing. Wonderful song!
11. These Exiled Years - 8.5/10 - This is a ballad, and I think it works wonders comapred to Worst Day. This keeps you hooked, to the emotional lyrics as Dave tells about his mom and being exiled from his country, it may drag a bit, but the overall instrumentation is good, and the lyrics are wonderful.
12. Sentimental Johnny - 6/10 - Ok, so this is the weirdo of the bunch. You've got your trumpet solo, which made a little entrance last song near the end. However, this is almost way too circusy and stupid for Flogging Molly. I admit, the trumpet's got some skill, but the song itself is mediocre at best.
13. Far Awar Boys - 4/10 - This one I didn't like too much either, again, its a ballad, and it drags a bit too much for me. Kind of a boring let down to the album, but whatever.

Overall, it has its flaws, but also its gems. THe album itself is worth it simply for Devil's Dance Floor alone. However, you'll have a blast listening to the upbeat songs in the beginning, and especially Black Friday rule and Beggar's Bush. Just avoid most of the ballads, and you'll love this album.

5 out of 5 stars Discovering Flogging Molly is better than falling in love........2006-06-20

I have long been a big fan of traditional Celtic music and never thought I would find myself liking music that is often classified as Punk. I got turned onto Flogging Molly accidentally on the internet and was instantly addicted to the driving beat mixed with awsome lyrics and more than one surprise per song. I immediatly bought this album and have never regreted it.

I shall never lend this CD to anyone!!! but you really should buy one for yourself.

4 out of 5 stars Flogging Molly a great live band? Indeed, However I liked it better when it was called The Pogues........2005-12-09

Ahh!!, the genre of Celtic punk has really now just become a real cash cow comodity, thanks to bands like Flogging Molly, The Tossers, and to a lesser extent Dropkick Murphy's. First off Irish music is something that I hold sacred to my heart, I'm third-generation Irish-American, so bands like The Dubliners, The Chieftains, and the Clancy Brothers, are the godfathers of the genre. However, when I first heard the Pogues, I was completely blown away, it sounded like The Sex Pistols setting fire to The Chieftains, sure Irish tradition music had been around for a long time, but when the Pogues got a hold of it their sound was really pioneering. "Red Roses For Me," "Rum, Sodomy and the Lash," "If I Should Fall From Grace With God," I'll even throw in "Peace and Love," still to this day rule my life. Which brings me to the question, who is the best band in the genre of Irish punk, after the Pogues. Well, none of the new bands have the fire, energy, and spirit of the Pogues, but Flogging Molly is pretty close, with The Tossers coming in at a close second, every other bands needs to get their own thing and stop looking up to granndad.
However, people in America, seem to think Flogging Molly is an original act and I'm always asked the question "Who are The Pogues?" Let me put your minds at ease with some of the differences between the two.
First, Flogging Molly may be a great live band, but so were the Pogues. When Shane MacGowan was up for it, they were truly a force to be reckon with.
Second, Dave King is no Shane MacGowan. Sure, Dave King writes some great lyrics, but Shane is a poet, his lyrics seems to flow through him, words cannot do him justice alone; he is a modern Irish storyteller.
Third, The Pogues were blessed with other great musicians, like Terry Woods, Philip Chevron, Spider Stacy (a.k.a. "The best tin whistle player ever,) and Jem Finer. Chevron wrote the epic song "Thousands Are Sailing," while Terry Woods wrote great songs like "Young Ned of the Hill," and Jem Finer, cowrote "Fairytale of New York," and wrote a lot of great Pogues instrumentals and other songs as well. Dave King seems to be the only gifted writer in the Flogging Molly.
Finally, even though MacGowan did'nt agree with this, the Pogues stretched their boundaries musically, especially on "Hell's Ditch," where Flogging Molly's songs all sound the same, and two of their songs "Sentimental Johnny," and "Big Bag of Bricks," totally rip off The Pogues.
It may sound like I'm slagging Flogging Molly, but I do love "Swagger," and "Drunken Lullabies," their both great albums, but they just can't hold a candle to any of The Pogues albums. As far as the music is concerned, I'll take "A Pair of Brown Eyes," over any Flogging Molly album any day.

5 out of 5 stars THE FIRST FROM THE FLOG!.......2005-11-08

I can't rave about this peice more than DRUNKEN LULLABYS, but this one stilll has a sh*t load of balls and will definatley get your pints raised high!
My personal favorites would have to be DEVILS DANCE FLOOR and BLACK FRIDAY RULE. Those two songs alone are SO F'IN GREAT that just thinking about them send shivers down my spine.
If I wasn't at work right now, I think I would be on my way to the packy to buy a Guiness and then go listen to these songs VERY FRIGIN LOUD!

5 out of 5 stars good stuff.......2005-11-03

my friend got me into flogging molly and now they are pretty much my favorite band. this entire album is great except for "Grace Of God Go I" which is somewhat boring. i would definately reccomend this, and the others, to anyone

Forever the buzz on Flogging Molly: the records are terrific, but wait until you see them live. And you can do both with the Los Angeles band's fifth record, a dual-disc CD (10 songs) and DVD (106 minutes) that pulsate with a remarkable mix of Irish pub traditional and enthusiastic punk rock. The audio CD is crammed with fan favorites--"Drunken Lullabies," "Black Friday Rules," "What's Left of the Flag"--that have been recreated either live on stage or acoustically in studio. The latter treatment strips down the wall-of-sound live band until the mandolin, accordion, and tin whistle echo like a Saturday night in Kilkenny, turning rampant rocker "Wanderlust" into a gentle waltz and "Another Bag of Bricks" into a pub-rock sing-a-long. The album's lone newcomer is a full-band studio take of "Laura," a farewell-thee love song featured on the DVD, which includes Bridge Regan's frenzied fiddle playing and vocalist Dave King's croaky Irish twang. Recorded in seven different countries, the DVD nails the genuine spirit of Flogging Molly's live performances and tracks the stories of each band member, especially King, who recalls bolting hometown Dublin for America. --Scott Holter

Album Description

This full-length documentary was shot over two years and in seven countries, capturing the journey of Flogging Molly from their bar band roots to their current success. Includes footage in the studio, on tour, at home, and at their sold-out homecoming performance at the Wiltern Theater in LA. This "in the pocket" experience with the candid and charismatic Flogging Molly family is set to the driving beat of their thunderous live performances. Brought together through unlikely happenstance and bound by an intense passion and heartfelt belief in what they do, the seven members and their associates provide a good look at how things can be done against the grain. Their formula for success: believing in oneself, refusing to be pigeonholed, and rising from humble beginnings to fulfill a dream.

4 out of 5 stars Rickles Poking Fun at a Night Club .......2007-07-20

Rickles is pretty funny in this 1968 live night club performance as he typially makes fun of everyone in the audience regardless of color or ethnic background that includes himself. He is a little bit raw but not significantly so considering these times. He ribs just about everyone in the audience who respond in good humor. Favorte line to a young Jewish couple as he asks the new husband, "What line of business is your father-in-law in that will let you to retire on his money?"

4 out of 5 stars Great and Funny if a little dated.......2006-05-11

This is a great example of Don Rickles humor from the late 60s. The judge it by what is funny in todays politically correct time is to due it a great injustice. Rickles has always been great and this shows him at his prime. The humor is a little insensitive but perhaps we as an audience have just become too sensitive. Judge it as a record of it's time and not as Rickles today. If you are judging comedy of the past by today's standards then don't listen to L.Bruce, R.Pryor,G.Carlin, or even R.Dangerfield because they all would fail today's "PC" police.

1 out of 5 stars Awful. .......2006-01-19

I agree with the nay-sayers. I have always liked Don Rickles, but this CD isn't just not clever or funny, it's embarassingly bad. (Maybe he was better on TV??) Times have changed, of course, but besides the political incorrectness - picking on "the Mexican" and "the queer" in the audience - (very weak, unfunny jibes )- it just isn't good Don Rickles. I agree with someone else's comment that there must be much better Rickles material than this, available in the vaults. I have now heard this CD, and have just thrown it in the trash. I wouldn't give this to anybody as a gift. I can use the plastic case that it came in, at least.

5 out of 5 stars One long,but funny routine.......2005-11-11

This album was originally released on the Warner Bros. Seven Arts label in 1968 in stereo only. The label had just begun its phaseout of mono. The original catalog number was WS 1745,at least in the United States. Don Rickles, who made a few television appearances prior to recording this album at Las Vegas's Sahara Hotel and Casino was,I guess we can say, competing with Bill Cosby, who also recorded for WB. We see on the cover,a tuxedo-clad Rickles, with mike in hand,of course. The back cover features a short written interview with Rickles. I remember Rickles guest-starring on a 1965 episode of CBS's The Beverly Hillbillies. This episode was one of the last black-and-white ones. Rickles' follow-up,DON RICKLES SPEAKS!,never was re-issued on CD. Rickles continued making television appearances after releasing this album. He still does today.

5 out of 5 stars Just as funny as when we were kids.......2005-09-19

My brothers and I died laughing at this when we were kids and it's just as funny in 2005 as it was then. This brand of comedy would not fly today, I dare say, but if you can suspend your political correctness for half an hour you'll laugh like you haven't in a long time. Way to go Don!

Having enjoyed this CD for almost a year now (it was released in April '05), I finally got a chance to catch The Dan Band live last night at The 9:30 Club in D.C. Dan and the boys played all of this CD (minus the Christmas song) along with Muskrat Love. All I can say is that's the most animated I've ever seen the crowd there. This is an excellent CD that captures all of the excitement that is The Dan Band. Now all they need to do is release the Bravo special on DVD.
