Black Celebration
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
Depeche Mode's most foreboding album, leaning toward the gothic, is DM at their most bleak, black-armband, and nihilistic--no doubt played over and over by countless self-loathing teens as they dyed their hair black behind locked bedroom doors. The tracks are tastefully minimalist, yet the few sounds that dominate each song have a consuming, even overwhelming feel--like a big, heavy black cloud that descends upon and surrounds listeners until their knees buckle from the weight. Rhythmically, songs like "A Question of Time" are driven with moderately paced 16th notes pounded out on synths filling out the low end. Other tracks follow the path of "Stripped," an all-out lamentfest powered by David Gahan's overproduced baritone. --Beth Bessmer --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Roots nihilism and/or the Godfathers of emo.......2007-04-11
I just got the remastered disc with the dvd and extras. This will be a great purchase for the hardcore DM fan. Too many great reviews already on here to go into song by song specifics but I will add (my opinion anyway) that this album made DM. There is just something so beautiful, honest, bleak, emotional, naked, and truthful about this collection of songs. Sure they had made it big by this time with People are People and could have rested on their laurels and made Some Great Reward again and again (paging the Rolling Stones and bands like them...) but they really pushed themselves to new ground here. As Gareth Jones says on the DVD (he is great on the DVD) that this album was such a far cry from Just Can't Get Enough. I look at this album (and really all DM albums) as the alternative to so many things in society... guitar wanker bands, sappy love song bands (don't we have enough), hedonistic hippie love, boring overplayed top 40 music, etc. These guys have had one of the most inexplicable careers in music history. They sell out stadiums with next to no radio play in the US. Anyway thanks DM and thank you Martin Gore (the true anti-rock star) for the great, courageous music.
A Masterpiece, Still One of Their Best.......2006-12-03
Throughout the '80s, the times saw Depeche Mode growing as a band. Alan Wilder's inclusion on "Construction Time Again" turned them from a group to a great group, the next one showing they weren't teeny-bop with somewhat shocking (for the time) tracks like "Master and Servant." This may not had any big hits, but that also doesn't really mean it's ungood or esoteric. It is neither of these. It is perceived as DM's foray into goth which went into the next two albums. This can be heard in tracks like "Fly on the Windscreen -- Final" and "Stripped," a sign of the arena-size ambitions of the group. Martin, the song-writer, sings on four of the album's 12 songs, and most of them have some great emotion in them. "A Question of Lust" is one of the highlights, a brilliant track which shows that DM have a great deal of substance and are more than a fad. I love the musical arrangements; something comes off as aural bliss about tracks like "It Doesn't Matter Two" and "Dressed in Black." While it may be dark, it's not gloom for gloom's sake, and sometimes it can be happy too. For instance, the title track is an admiration of seeing good even in the darkest days, "I can feel your warmth and it feels like home," sounds like a good-day sentiment from "Here Is the House," and more importantly, there's "But Not Tonight." 20 years later, "Black Celebration" should be viewed of as just as good an album. I kind of would like to hear what a re-mastered version would sound like. A fan favorite and rightfully so.
An important moment in the history of alternative music.......2006-08-27
Regarded by critics and fans alike as one of Depeche Mode's best albums, Black Celebration was a turning point in the bands career.
The quartet of Basildon emerged as one of the biggest bands of the era with the release of this album, and there are many reasons for that.
The period of experimentation that began three years before in "Construction Time Again" reached the summit here. Depeche Mode mixed electronica with Goth sounds, though the result was never Goth.
Martin Gore, in a burst of creativity, offered some of the best vocalic and literally dramatic songs of the eighties, exploring topics from longing to desire, sex to politic and even death.
Due to this, Black Celebration is one of the darkest albums of modern times, praised by many but also censored by mainstream critic. Its explicit and sometimes "embarrassing" lyrics relegate it to a more eclectic, cultish audience.
Songs like "A question of Lust" and "Sometimes" are proof of Martin's vocalization at his best. Only few cases in the history of electronic music can be proud of saying that (e.g Alyson Moyet in Yazoo).
In musically terms, Black Celebration was a seminal point in the use of electronic instruments (thanks the gifted musician Alan Wilder). Sampling and the use of most modern keyboards created new and unheard atmospheres, similar in artists like Kraftwerk or Can.
The song Black Celebration might as well be the best example of it, as well as the murky-harmonious "But not tonight".
The influence of the album on the forthcoming musical scene is as big as its success. Bands like Rammstein or Red Hot Chili Peppers have made cover versions of songs from it. All dance electronic scene often mentions songs like "A question of Time" as a definite superb moment in the non-guitars musical movement.
Black Celebration is also the shift of a pop band into a cult major act. Its sound invaded independent and alternative radio stations in the US and Europe during the second half of the Thatcher- Reagan era (and eventually in the entire world) and started a dramatically growth in the population of Depeche Mode fanatics.
It was the perfect prelude for the acclaimed and commercially successful "Music for the Masses".
In all definitions, Black Celebration is one of the most important moments in the history of alternative and electronic music.
My favorite.......2006-08-18
Depeche Mode has always been one of my favorites. I had this tape since high school, but now everything is in CD form; so I replaced it with a CD. Now I get to hear in in the car!
Not so dark as it is romantic/emotive.......2006-08-03
Reviewers have taken at face value that name of the album and the name of some of its tracks perhaps a bit too much to heart. Yes, this is the darkest of the DM albums. But, Pornography it is not. Closer it is not. It's more a romantic album than a dark album. Even Fly on the Windscreen with lyrics like "there are lambs for the slaughter" feels more romantic than the alienation of Joy Division's Closer or the schizophrenia of the Cure's Pornography.

Amazing and Soulful.......2007-07-03
I first heard this recording at a session at the 2007 conference of the Association for African American Historical Research and Preservation and I have been listening to it ever since. This CD really is a celebration of music.
I have put in this CD without telling people what it was and have enjoyed the totally positive response.
Was disappointed.......2007-05-22
I bought this CD because of the great reviews and didn't like it at all. Too loud and abrasive for my ears... I gave it away to someone who might better like it.
I expected it to be mellifluous and soulful but found it rather annoying... especially at the holidays.
excellent, excellent cd.......2007-04-26
there is nothing more i could say about this cd that the other reviewers haven't already mentioned - it is a must have for anyone, even if you are not a fan of christian music. i had never even heard of this project - i bought it soon after it came out, simply because i liked the cover art and thought it would be a good cd to have around christmas. it's better than that - i listen to it year round. every song, no matter what style, is delivered with all heart and soul possible. excellent lift-you-up music, and great to listen to in the mornings to get you pumped up for the day. "and he shall purify" is simply electrifying. i am also a big fan of the final song, "halleluja!" and "but who may abide the day of his coming" will just set you free! year round, this is an outstanding example of gospel, jazz, hip-hop and absolute zeal for any music lover.
Awesome Recording.......2007-04-11
Handel's Messiah: A Soulful Celebration is a masterful interpretation of an age old classic. The arrangements are sheer brilliance. My hats off to Mervyn Warren and all those involved in this project.
OUTSTANDING!.......2007-03-16
This album won a Grammy many years ago. I saw a Gospel Choir perform the Halleluah Chorus live at the award show. Since then I have not only enjoyed the recording tremendously myself I have given it to several people at Christmas time and they have been equally enthralled. I loaned it to my son's High School Choir teacher and finaaly made it a gift when he refused to give it back!

The best mini-movie yet!.......2007-05-12
You already know the album... you're probably interested in this for the documentary... I know I was. After the 30 minute affairs on the other disks, I was prepared for a pretty good movie given this amazing period in their history. Well, the movie is an HOUR long, with a good mix of creative, business, studio, and Tour stories.
Pretty decent remaster.......2007-04-15
Thank God that this CD wasn't another victim of the "loudness war" that has recently permeated the CD mastering industry. The dynamics are well preserved and there is very little clipping of the audio. Those who are afraid that this CD would sound like "Playing the Angel" or the two Singles compilation need not worry. The engineers showed restraint with this one.
In addition to the "careful" remaster, there's a nice HOUR LONG documentary included with this CD.
This one is definitely a very worthy purchase.
Depeche Mode's 'Brief Period of Rejoicing...'.......2007-03-28
The following review has been 21 years in coming as Depeche Mode's 1986 album and crowning achievement of their discography, 'Black Celebration', has steadfastly remained my most favorite and revered artist album of all time.
Following the moderate success of the highly innovative and experimental 'Construction Time Again' in 1983 and then a more resounding achievement, both in terms of the critical acclaim and subsequent tour which followed 1984's 'Some Great Reward', the time had come once again ("Get out the crane...") for the Basildon four to push the creative envelope further still and reach deeper yet, in efforts to broaden their burgeoning, worldwide fan base. In essence, it was time the world took notice of Depeche Mode and the band was ready ready to be taken seriously as a major and credible all electronic act. Who could have ever imagined an album which featured nothing in the vein of 'radio friendly' singles and lyrics which reflected on the darker nature of "The world we live and life in general", would aid in ascending the band to such stellar heights?
'Black Celebration', a dark, moody, sonic epitome of what the band was all about in terms of sound, word, voice and overall aesthetic, saw the creation of what I lovingly refer to as Depeche Mode's own personal, exclusively electronic sister to 'Dark Side of the Moon.' Indeed, the prodcution values and themes present on this 5th studio album were richer, more densely layered and contained combined elements which would demand the band be regarded as a musical force to be reckoned with by fans and critics alike and also as harbingers of a new era in electronic music.
From the moody, darkly atmospheric, sample laden opening of the albums title track, to the industrial yet plaintive longings of 'Stripped', 'Black Celebration' is a seductive soundscape drenched in reverb, angst and an oppressive, foreboding ambience which conjures heady, if not bleak imagery of life, love and lust. The inclusion of a slightly (final) remixed version of 'Fly on the Windscreen' (1985's 'It's Called a Heart' B-side) was an obvious and proper choice, given the fact the track seemed to lend itself perfectly to the overall vibe of 'doom and gloom' ever present throughout the album. Another slightly new and inventive production technique, previously employed on 'Construction Time Again' (though to a lesser extent) was the mixing and sequeing of tracks together without traditional pauses or breaks. This production value is most notably featured on the albums first three tracks, beginning with 'Black Celebration' and concluding with the heartbreaking yet gorgeous strains of 'A Question of Lust.' The mixing of the first three tracks as one extended album intro, remains to this day the most flawless album opening I've ever experienced and has yet to be duplicated. The albums ebb and flow, as well as its overall track arrangement and order, is nothing short of brilliant. Alan Wilder's meticulous attention to every detail is quite obvious in every sound, note and nuance.
Many of the production elements found on 'Black Celebration' bear a striking resemblance to the sounds Wilder would later experiment with on his Recoil project, while Martin Gore's profound, emotionally resonant lyrics are, I feel, some of the best of his career. 'Sometimes', 'Here is the House' and 'World Full of Nothing' are three of the most beautiful Depeche Mode tracks ever produced.
While I enjoy the track 'But Not Tonight' ('Stripped' B-side and included on the US album release), I do feel the decision to excise it from the re-master re-release was a fitting one as the track lends itself to a more 'pop' sensibility and somewhat diminishes the mood and atmosphere created by the albums preceding tracks. Some argue the song allows the album to conclude on a more positive, upbeat note. However, I feel the albums original (UK release) closing track, 'New Dress', achieves the same task but with more pronounced minor chords and haunting lyrics, while still maintaining an air of optimism against gritty realism - 'You may change the world..."
As for the DVD re-master, the sound is fresh, crisp and startlingly bold and the CD version is nearly as impressive. The albums packaging, replete with the embossed logos of the original LP sleeve and which features red tulips before a looming skyscraper draped in European military styled banners (the explanation of the album covers creation and design is especially interesting on the DVD documentary) is both stark, beautiful and visually appealing as ever. And while I regard Anton Corbijn as an accomplished photographer and graphic designer in his own right, I do feel the band's album and single artwork which followed 'Music for the Masses', suffered an artistic defeat of sorts after the band parted ways with photographer Brian Griffin ('A Broken Frame') and Towne and Country Planning.
After the release and critical success of 'Black Celebration', Depeche Mode continued (and continues) from strength to strength, purifying and always evolving their production prowess to the next level with each subsequent album that followed - a sign of true talent for any band wishing to succeed in the music industry. The sonic artwork crafted on this album has yet to be replicated and I doubt it ever will. 'Black Celebration' was the turning point for the band. It was a moment in time, a testament to 'life in the so-called space age' and an indicator that one of electronicas inimitable pioneers were about to take the world by storm. "I'll drink to that..."
Could've Been A Perfect BC Remaster...But Not Tonight.......2007-03-20
Black Celebration is one of the finest Depeche Mode albums ever to have been made (second only to Violator in my opinion). Their fifth original studio release brought the band to a whole nother level of musical genius and stature, disposing of the new romantic phase of their career and focusing on the much darker tones of the Euro gothic scene in the mid 1980s. This comes as no surprise when one learns that Martin Gore, at the time, had recently left Basildon and purchased a flat in Berlin, where he was living in Germany, soaking up all the late night clubs and cultural decadence surrounding him. His writing reflected this as a result. Gone were much of the lighter sweeter aspects found on Some Great Reward, which were replaced by more raw and darkly honest subject matter (life is pain), that had only scratched the surface, previously, with songs like "Blasphemous Rumours."
The opening title track (and subsequent name of the album) sets the tone, with a deeply seductive and foreboding message, that gives each listener their own anthem of celebrated darkness, with lead singer, Dave Gahan, at the top of his game (one of DM's finest). The song continues, without fading out, right into the next classic piece, "Fly On The Windscreen," another excellent song about the promise of death and living amongst all the anarchy and chaos that life has to offer. Again, without fading out, the music continues into the second single off of the album: "A Question Of Lust." Sung by Martin, who delivers a well crafted and melancholily vulnerable performance, this is Mr. Gore at his absolute best, conveying the complexities and the emotional resonance of relationships on a simple yet highly effective level. These three songs all together are reason enough to praise this album, but they're only the tip of the iceberg. This is also the only Depeche Mode studio album where Martin Gore performs more than just one or two tracks like he does on all the rest. Along with A Question Of Lust, we get a total of four lead vocal tracks by Gore: "Sometimes" (similar in some ways to Somebody, from Some Great Reward, but much more somber, with an echoing effect), "It Doesn't Matter Two" (an effectively dark sequel to SGR's "It Doesn't Matter," replacing romance for melancholy) & "World Full Of Nothing" (which explores the emptiness of physical relationships that have no real emotional core...yet still mean something), show a much more multilayered side to Martin's musical and vocal talents, previously unseen. Other classic tunes, like the mesmerizing "Stripped" (the first single off of the album), "Here Is The House" (which was performed live only one time, during the BC tour), "Dressed In Black" (showcasing Dave Gahan at his most seductively brilliant), and the fast-paced/crowd pleasing "A Question Of Time" (the third single off the album, that'll have you toe tapping to the beat in no time) turn Black Celebration into the bonnafied classic masterpiece it rightfully deserves to be identified as.
Unfortunately, this Remastered edition suffers from not giving many of the fans from different regions (including North America) the version they grew up with and consider to be the complete album. You see, the original UK LP of Black Celebration ended with the song, "New Dress," a very dark and bleak piece that takes stabs at societies vanities as well as the many sick and twisted shortcomings we evoke amongst ourselves (i.e., murder, famine, etc.). After listening to the entire album and having it end with this song, you can't help but fall into a state of melancholy (or "depressed mode" as it were), which is fine if that's where you want to go. But the US version offered a different solution. Unlike the UK version, the US release ended, instead, with the track, "But Not Tonight," a song about hope and redemption. Purists will of course scoff that it was never intended to become the final number on the album, and was only recorded as the B-side to the "Stripped" single. Many also view it as "too positive" a song, that doesn't quite fit with the rest of the album ideology (kind of like the theatrical cut of Blade Runner with the tacked on happy ending). Since all of these Remastered editions are taken from the original UK versions, what you get here is the UK release of Black Celebration which omits "But Not Tonight" and ends the album with "New Dress." So if you grew up with "But Not Tonight" ending the album, the way many of us here in the states did, you probably will be very disappointed with this Remastered release, as it feels very incomplete without it.
Reprise Records and Rhino really should've Remastered the US version of Black Celebration to please everybody, instead of just giving us the same UK version that was also already released in England and Europe. In addition to "But Not Tonight" being left off of this Remastered album, there are also some other odd and subtle differences. A loud clicking sound can be heard at the beginning of "Stripped" (which is not heard on the original US version). Also, the opening riff from "A Question Of Time" is played just once instead of twice, like the way it is on the original US release. "But Not Tonight" is not completely discarded. It can be found on the Bonus Tracks section of the DVD. The version included is the original 7" single mix. The US album version is very similar to the 7" single mix, but it has a cleaner, thinner sound and less reverb. These simple changes make a huge difference and the song is better for it. It should have been included on here as well. Such a shame it's been treated this way.
Also on the Bonus Tracks section of the DVD are some additional B-sides: "Breathing In Fumes" (a sort of extended sidebar to "Stripped"), "Black Day" (another Martin Gore lead vocal using lyrics from "Black Celebration"), and the memorable instrumental, "Christmas Island," as well as some live tracks from the BC tour concert in Birmingham. "Shake The Disease" (which could've easily been used for this album) and "It's Called A Heart" (originally taken from The Singles 81>85/Catching Up With Depeche Mode albums) are also present, along with their B-sides: "Flexible," and the original version of "Fly On The Windscreen." As with all other Remastered DM releases, you also get the short film - Depeche Mode 1986: "The Songs Aren't Good Enough, There Aren't Any Singles And It'll Never Get Played On The Radio." It's another enjoyable look back at a very important era in DM's career history, with interviews by the band members and others involved in the making of the album. The DVD also boasts impressive 5.1 Surround Sound and Hi-Res Stereo mixes that improve the sound quality, compared to the original release (though there are probably purists out there who will say it could have been done even more effectively) and the Remastered CD itself is also an audio improvement. But, for me at least, the loss of But Not Tonight, from the end of the album, really takes its toll on the overall experience of this Remastered release, which is tarnished as a result.
While we're all entitled to our own opinions, I gotta say that there is merit in having this track included at the end. Besides many of us growing up with But Not Tonight at the end of the album, much of the importance of the song (in my opinion at least) also comes down to how you want to feel after you've listened to the entire album as a whole. For me, But Not Tonight is like a light at the end of a very dark tunnel. While life may seem hopeless and out of control at times, there is still some good in this world to look forward to. When you listen to this song after experiencing all of the darkness and pain that comes before it, you can't help but feel a sense of calming relief. A sense of hope for the future. Pessimists will dismiss all of this to be sure, but it still won't change the fact that this is a very strong and powerful song that many still love and admire to this day, especially here in the US where it even became a single on vinyl.
Again, with this Remastered release, many fans (more so in the US) will be disappointed with the changes made to one of their all-time favorite Depeche Mode albums, which is still a Masterpiece, and a tremendous and powerful experience nonetheless. Hopefully, someday, the US album editions will receive the same remastered treatment as their UK counterparts. It's just a question of time.

Joy In Worship.......2007-01-10
I would recommend that anyone who loves up beat gospel music get this one, if only for track 7, All Night Long. I love this song, it came on @ 6 AM one morning to my alarm clock, I immediately woke up singing and crying this song. I went on to have a wonderful day. I had to search the web to find it, and once I did, I had to order several more for 2 of my friends, who also happened to be my Minister and Pastor.
Uplifting.......2007-01-09
This CD was recommended to me by a dear friend. Oh my goodness. I seldom ever take it out of my player. His testimony about his son and the following song, From Me To You Lord, for me, takes me right before the throne of God. I love good traditional heart and spirit felt music and truly You Deserve My Worship, is all of that and more for me as well as those at our church. Even the children love to sing, You Deserve My Worship.
Good Job!.......2006-03-03
I grew up in Newark, New Jersey in a church that Alvin Darling played piano and organ in at one time. I had to go all the way to North Carolina to hear this wonderful work. Immediately upon my return to Newark, New Jersey, I rushed to Amazon's website to purchase "I called on the Lord" I've enjoyed it immensely. Good Job Alvin Darling!
worship and praise.......2005-09-27
I thought this CD was awesome. I ordered this CD to hear the song"All Night" but became intrigued with many of the other songs including "Testimony". I listen to this album almost every morning going to work. It is a very inspirational CD with lots of praise and worship. It helps to start my day off on the right note.
A Blessing!.......2005-09-27
I purchased this CD for "All Night". When I began browsing through the intro's to see what else I liked, I had to go to the beginning and just listen to the entire CD. Each song captured me. Each song has a message for someone in your congregation - Very appropriate for Sunday Morning Worship. Buy it today, you will enjoy!

Ready To Celebrate Jesus?.......2002-05-10
First off, this is the album that should have been entitled, "Growing Up", because this album shows that Walt Whitman and The Soul Children have grown with the times, and that they've grown in their style. One thing remains the same though, that the choir still ministers to your soul with heartfelt messages in the songs that are being sung. The album opens up with the setting-of-the-tone-for-the-album song, "Lift Him Up". After listening to that song, we find that the song was only to prepare us to celebrate Jesus with "Celebrate". Although majority of the songs have that contemporary gospel feel to them, "His Eye Is On The Sparrow" will appeal to those that are longing for that good old gospel music. What became an instant favorite to me was Walt Whitman's rendtion on Rick Found's "Lord, I Lift Your Name On High". If you haven't heard of Walt Whitman and The Soul Children of Chicago, or even if you're a fan, you won't be diappointed with this album, but deeply annointed.

WOW!.......2000-07-29
They've done it again! God has truly blessed Brother Whitman and these beautiful children. The music is there, the message is there and most of all, God is there. With a combination like this, how can they miss? The children's choir in my church sings "His Eye is on the Sparrow" and they will be singing more material from this wonderful group!
Just Awesome!.......2000-03-22
Touches my heart! My Father Knows and Secret Place moves me to tears of joy in the Lord. These young people are a blessing from the Lord!
The Greatest Youth Chior.......2000-02-18
This CD is definetly one of the CD's to get if you are a gospel music lover. Walt Whittman does an excellent job at directing these young children. "My Father Knows" (soloist Lecrecia Campbel)is one of the best songs on the album. "Greater He" provides just the right mix of hip hip and scripture to woo even the youngest of gospel lovers. If you are young and new to gospel, this album will be sure to have you tapping your toes and praising the Lord at the same time.
Its tremendous, "His eye is on sparrow" touched me great;ly........1999-11-14
I tell you, I've only heard one song because my cd haven't came yet. But His eye is on the sparrow sparked my insides with intensity. It really reminded me to live life with greatfulness and preach to others that he's coming back one day and that everyone needs to get there life focus and right for jesus christ. I love this song, God Bless

Album Description
This CD celebrates the life of innovative American composer Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson (1932-2004), whose accomplishments spanned the worlds of jazz, dance, pop, film, television, and classical music.
World premiere recordings of Perkinson's orchestral, chamber, and solo instrumental works showcase his distinctive blend of Baroque counterpoint; energetic, streamlined American Romanticism; elements of blues, spirituals, and black folk music; and a rhythmic ingenuity all his own.
Performances by the Chicago Sinfonietta and conductor Paul Freeman, Chicago's New Black Repertory Ensemble Quartet, and distinguished soloists.
Customer Reviews:
creativity!.......2007-01-13
I enjoy classical, chamber, vocal, and jazz on a high-end system. I found myself listening to this disk over and over again, and appreciating new nuances of creative writing each time. The music combines elements of jazz and chamber ensemble playing (think Haydn or Mozart), and while there are lots of melodic theme treatments, as in good chamber music, it is the creative use of rhythm and changes in rhythmic patterns that makes these works outstanding. Some pieces are reminiscent of Scott Joplin, while others presage John Adams, and all are uniquely satisfying. They are also well-performed, and the sound quality is superb.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent piano literature.......2002-11-13
This CD contains well-known Chinese piano literature that is rarely heard of in the USA. It has a good selection of piano literature from China and is a great introduction to some of China's best composers in the 20th century.
"The Moon's Reflection Over The Second Spring" (Chu Wanghua) is definitely my favorite track and this arrangement with a traditional ensemble is gorgeous. "100 Birds Singing In Homeage To The Phoenix" (Wang Jianzhong) contains very ethnic sounds, achieved by the creative use of ornaments, especially in the opening of the piece. The piece "Autumn Moon Mirrored In The Lake" is a setting of a popular Cantonese folksong by Chen Peixun. Evocative of a Chinese harp, this piece is mostly pentatonic and pianistic with many arpeggios and trills. Another piano standard is "Flute and Drum At Sunset" by Li Yinghai. This CD is definitely worth listening to gain more insight on 20th century Chinese music.
Beautiful craftsmanship.......2000-06-22
This is a recording of glorious depth and tonality. My favourite track - "The Moon's reflection over the second spring" - is brilliantly evocative, and showcases the wonderful talent of Eileen Huang. For those wishing to push the boundaries of the western piano concerto tradition, this CD offers an easy access to alternative musical traditions.

My Mentor!!.......2007-02-16
O' Landa Draper was no doubt the greatest choir director ever. I have been directing choirs since the age of 2 and when I was introduced to him, I bought every VHS & went to every concert in Memphis. I have never seen anyone direct verbally and with every body part he had. He was awesome. I hope the Associates continue to carry on his legacy.
A dynamic director!.......2000-02-04
The late Olanda Draper was clearly one of the best in gospel music. I am a gospel choir director and singer but he took choir directing to another level. As I watch his videos, I often find myself replaying certain parts because of how his choir sang a part and followed his direction. He is still directing, only in a place we long to be, IN GLORY!
Completely awstruck by the spirit influenced music.......1999-09-22
We absolutley love all of the music and videos demostrated by Olanda Draper & Associates we just found this cd yesterday andhave played it alot already I only wish i could have seen him in person if anyone who knows anything about his background how he was raised and what faith he is i would be interested in any information. i love to watch his videos he totaly gets into his message and i love that in a gospel singer
