Irish Rock at its best.......2007-06-08
This album has it all. It is a necessary piece in any CD collection.
Genius.
I'm a canny gun man.......2007-04-18
Some music returns to you in the most unusual ways. I first heard the Pogues in college in 1985 and played this record, yes record, on my radio show 91.3 FM WKNH. While grieving for the loss of my closest friend from those days, I began a journey of reminiscing of those days, which included listening to bands....The Pogues, Jesus and Mary Chain, Jellyfish, The Posies, Thin Lizzy, Mott the Hoople, and The Clash.... we so often listened to and talked about with such passion. So, now, Dirty Old Town is playing and Shane's tales of death, drink, and dispair
are as poignant as ever. Great music is great in any era. Its evident that these songs came from a man struggling, partying, living, and dying in the moment. Great artists are like that. They feel something visceral and are able to capture it in some form. BUY THIS MUSIC.
Shane McGowan is a Genius.......2007-01-23
I love this album. Must have listened to it a thousand times. I can't get enough of Shane McGowan's voice - rough and masculine and filled with a dogged Irish faith in the face of self-inflicted Irish despair. The female voice on "I'm a Man You Don't Meet Every Day" is hauntingly beautiful. God gave that particular ineffable quality only to the Daughters of Houlihan. If you like Irish music, you need this album. It's certainly been a big part of the soundtrack of my life since it came out over 20 years ago.

Customer Reviews:
Nearly perfect, but..........2007-06-03
"Rainy Night in Soho" is NOT the version on the "Poguetry in Motion" EP. It's an alternate mix with cheesy jazz trumpet. Why??? The original is SO much better. (Now you won't be unpleasantly surprised, like I was.)
Unique.......2006-10-07
The Pogues aren't great musicians. They're not great at rock and if you want great Irish music you'd be better off with Planxty, Patrick Street or Danu. But the Pogues are unique, entertaining, touching and influential.
I always thought this was their best album. It had the urban decadence, some good Irish folk, and the obligitory bloody battle songs. What it didn't have was an example of Shane's more tender poetry. Well, now it does. The bonus tracks kind of mess up the continuity of the CD but it's worth it to get "Rainy Night in Soho". I have never heard a better written, lovelier ballad. It's worth the price of the CD. Die hard Pogue fans will object, but it deserves a better singer. Mary McPartlin made a remarkable recording of it in 2005. The beauty of her voice accentuates the tenderness of the lyrics. Still, there is a magic to Shane's renditions of his masterpieces like "Rainy Night" or "Fairytale Of New York". He is a rare talent.
This is a great set of music. I highly recommend it but don't believe the fun and frolic reviews. Shane McGowan is the heart of the Pogues. He may be a poetic genius but he's a dissipated, drunken junkie. His songs in particular, and Irish songs in general, fluctuate between joy and despair. And, as I mentioned, in all Irish folk albums there will be at least two cuts in which people are blown up or hacked to pieces. In fact another benefit of the bonus tracks is ending the album with the classic "Parting Glass". The original closing cut was Shane's version of Waltzing Matilda. It's not the Aussie folk song but a powerfully written, thoroughly depressing recounting of the Battle of Gallipolli. When the original album ended the last thing on your mind was a round of darts and another pint.
In spite of the raucous "fun" of some of the cuts this isn't a party CD.
Not a Pogues fan yet??.......2006-08-29
Don't be nervous about buying this CD. It is an amazing listen. All the songs are crisp excellent quality full of fresh melodies. Some slowed pacers, fast pacers, good dancing fun. Old fan or new get Rum Sodomy & the Lash.
WOW!.......2006-07-30
I feel it is my duty as a good part Irish-American to go and write this while inebriated. The Pogues best album, and the best Celtic rock album of all time. Period. I'm too drunk to write anymore.
and it was all for a pair of brown eyes.......2006-05-20
Well here's a rock band you don't see everyday. Irish themed pop music. I like it. Every song on this album is great, and Elvis Costello produced it, the legend he is. You will feel great after hearing this record.

Produced by Elvis Costello, the Pogues' second album brilliantly courted Irish drinking music with the thornier aspects of punk. Cait O' Riordan would eventually marry the producer and leave the band, but Shane MacGowan always made it his show and here he exploits his barfly voice to full effect. "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda" is worthy of Tom Waits, while "A Pair of Brown Eyes" is as sentimental as he gets. The addition of Uillean pipes, fiddle, and horns make this a grand statement about how all music can be filtered down to blood and guts and made to rock. --Rob O'Connor

Customer Reviews:
How to sway, mosh, drink, sing and stay happy.......2006-08-08
Years after its release, it still remains one of my favorite discs. The songs are filled with classic, curious, poignant, silly, heart-felt, and bloody jolly lyrics. Dirges, reels, chants, and poems - all of the music that the Pogues could perform well. The songs differ greatly except in that they have some tradition behind them - whether it lie in some bar somewhere, in the history of Ireland or Australia, or just in the love of another.
A great disc worthy of many listenings.
ARRRR. FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT. YE IRISH DRINKERS...........2006-06-20
I myself was raised on Irish drinking music from a very small age. Being a large percent of Irish myself, it has never been uncommon for some of the elder relatives to get smashed, and role out the drinkin' songs, for some large, sloppy group sing-a-longs.
Personally, I like the style. Especially when it gets loud and rowdy, and chaotic. When you assemble a small group at the bars, that manages to scare the rest of the bar, just a little. There is a somewhat popular breed of this music these days ala Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly. But these bands did not create this style on their own. They sang along with their elders too, who likely may have been singing along to THE POGUES.
This album was released in 1985, and was back when the band had not completely become a rock and roll band. In later years they would sort of drift away from the solid Irish sound. This album is a lot of traditional style Irish drinkin' music. With all the drunken rage and intensity you should expect. Look at Shane McGowan. He's a filthy bastaaaad. Keeps it real all the way. Songs about fightin' the good fight called life, and sometimes even love and other things. DIRTY OLD TOWN is the one that stands to be the most well known, but just about every song is worthy.
Also as a treat is Cait O' Riordan, who wouldn't stay in the band very long, but was on ship for this voyage. She sings the killer MAN YOU DON'T MEET EVERYDAY, which you may catch me being completely mesmorized by after a few stiff drinks.
The Pougues may not be as heavy as todays popular Irish/punk rock, but you should be sure to realize that they pretty much started the trend, long before it was a trend. Making those rowdy old Irish songs, a little more rowdy, so we can all get down to fightin'.
This pre-dates the POGUES more rockin' stuff, but it has enough fire in it to be a worthy addition to any drinkin' mans collection.
Incredibly fun and interesting Irish drunk music! Who would've known The Pogues were so good?.......2006-01-13
I'll be honest and say that I was always hesitant when it came to The Pogues. My dad and some of my friends liked him, but when they described them as drunk Irish singer/songwriters I kind've lost interest. One day, however, my dad forced me to listen to this album, and BOY is this awesome! Not only does it sound extremely interesting and unique, but it's great fun! Everything about this album is fantastic - the singer, the lyrics, the instrumentation...you'd be hardpressed to find something here that you WON'T like. The songs are usually pretty funny and occasionally are even emotional, but basically it's just a fun album that is good for any occasion. The musicianship here is excellent and the band "sounds" like The Pogues, so I have no idea who else to compare them (I don't have any other album, out of my personal 1,900 ones that I own, that sounds anything like this). The icing on the cake is that the singer himself is extremely likable, and he has a TON of personality. Basically, if you want to hear something different and fun, then The Pogues' "Rum Sodomy & the Lash" is a fantastic album to get! Absolutely recommended!
Highlights include:
the entire album!
Wow!.......2005-09-30
This isn't an album, it's an experience!
A solid collection of Irish blues-rock, sad, painful, glorious!
Short and Sweet.......2005-02-24
The Pogues are the mother band for any Irish-Punk-Folk type music. If you like any bands like Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphy's, The Tossers etc... get your hands on all The Pouges CD's you can. Try to run with the original albums before going out and buying live albums or bootlegs. Rum Sodomy and The Lash is by far one of there better albums (though all are great), it has the perfect amount of fast songs like the incredible
