Although Black Flag's classic period was between 1980 and 1982, with the punkier Jealous Again EP, the almost hardcore Damaged album, and the scattering of singles which surrounded them, the band's period of greatest influence was as a roaring sludge-metal outfit--as featured here. Singer Henry Rollins hadn't yet begun to think of himself as a poet, which is good. Guitarist Greg Ginn however, while always tremendous with a three-second lead flourish, had started to get flatulent with the solos, so punk purists beware. But the Kira Roessler/Bill Stevenson rhythm section was at their most thundering, and the track selection here draws from a wide swath of the band's catalogue. For a great career-retrospective, try Wasted Again. --Gavin McNett --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

This complete 12-disc survey of The Psalms of David from St. Paul's Cathedral is both a remarkable historical record of Anglican chant at its finest and an astonishing musical experience. Contained here are all 150 psalms in their traditional English garb from the 1549 Book of Common Prayer, with revised or entirely new musical settings as published in The New St. Paul's Cathedral Psalter, edited by the choir's musical director John Scott, itself a revision of the 1875 Cathedral Psalter. As such, these recordings represent the very backbone of the Anglican liturgy, but even a casual listener will be in no doubt that they also offer music that is both contemplative and richly varied when removed from its liturgical context.
The art of "pointing"--or setting--psalm texts has been essayed by many English composers, from William Croft through the Wesleys and William Boyce in earlier times to the great flowering in the late 19th century under Stainer and Barnby, with further contributions from Parry, Stanford, Elgar, Howells, and a host of choirmasters and organists, including Sir David Willcocks and John Scott himself. All are represented here. Recorded throughout in the vast acoustic of their cathedral, the St. Paul's choristers enunciate the words precisely, backed by inventive though unobtrusive organ accompaniment. Taken individually, it's possible to isolate moments when the choir seem to drag their feet or fail to give due weight to the words (Psalm 125, "They that put their trust in the Lord," seems far too subdued, for example), and the massive Psalm 119 is awkwardly split across discs 10 and 11, but overall this set is nothing less than a document of invaluable cultural and musical significance. --Mark Walker
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant Recordings.......2007-06-11
In our view the changes in pointing, and excellent selection of chants, give deeper meanings to the Psalms than those achieved in the "standard?" Parish Psalter.
We found great Spirituality and a wonderful sense of Worship whilst listening to this set. This is often sacrificed for brilliance of musical performance in other recordings.
Unfortunately the "St.Paul's Psalter" is not available (June 2007) but we are told that a new print run may happen within 12 months. This would be a most valuable companion to the recordings when and if it becomes available.
A- for effort.......2006-02-23
This grand undertaking deserves high praise, and I'm struck, listening to chant after chant, how much Anglican chant as it used to be until the changes of the 70s was one of the great Victorian contributions to English life and art. For anyone who wants to hear almost the entire repertoire of Anglican chant deployed in singing the whole book of Psalms, this is an unrivalled source. It is wonderful, too, to hear the Coverdale translation: you realize what the churches have lost by abandoning the proper & regular singing of the Psalms. So one is immensely grateful to Hyperion for putting out this recording. It's not perfect, though.
The rhythmic pacing, though a little slow for my taste, is steady and sensitive, the diction clear, and the organ accompaniment superb (Providing an expressive accompaniment to a choir singing in 4-part free rhythm, and improvising descants to the melody at the same time, isn't easy). And of course there's the cavernous acoustic of St. Paul's, very impressive in the more thunderous psalms. Unfortunately, though, the "forward" style favored for the St. Paul's boys produces a sound that's unpleasantly chesty in the lower registers and reedy in the higher ones. The poorly integrated choral sound caused by this kind of voice-production can be downright unpleasant for anyone used to, or trained in, the classic English choral style. In fact, one has to wonder why this choir was chosen for such a huge project: even allowing for the near-universal decline in standards of vocal training for boys in England, better sounds than this can still be heard.
What can you say?.......2003-01-03
I almost hate to criticize this terrific thing. After all, where else can you get all 150 Psalms in a single collection sung by one of the world's great choirs?
How much do I like it? I bought it *twice*. I originally bought all the CDs separately, before they came out with a single boxed set. They were stolen from my car (and, God willing, maybe they converted some poor thief to Anglican Cathedral Music and got him into church). After they were stolen, I immediately bought them again.
One of the great pleasures of life is listening to the Morning and Evening Psalms while driving to and from work, and making listening a regular feature of Morning and Evening Prayer.
So what's the criticism? The sound is a bit muddy, so the words can be rather difficult to understand without reading along (which is a real problem when driving), and personally, I prefer the Psalter from the 1979 BCP instead of the old one, from the Great Bible. But that's unreasonable. They ARE a British choir after all. Those are the only criticisms.
Anyhow, if you have a taste for choral cathedral music, this is genuinely indispensible. St. Paul's has given the world a great blessing.

I didn't like it then, but I LOVE it now!.......2005-01-04
When this stuff....My War, Slip It In, and Live '84....cam out, I was one of those "punk rockers" who thought that Black Flag (and hell, ANY band that really learned how to play) had "sold out". Greg Ginn is the type of musician that could not simply keep on playing minimalistic chords, over-and-over, like the classic Jealous Agaim e.p. He had chops, man, and when My War came out, I listened to the album (um, it was actually on vynil) and I thought side one was decent enough, what with all of the paranoid/insane screaming on the song "My War" and the emotional agony expressed on "Can't Decide"...but then it got real, real SLOW (and slow was a "sin" back in the early 80's M.D.C./Verbal Abuse speed/hardcore/punk time), and well, the songs were all over 1:25 minutes long. Man, this just sucked, or so I thought. So I grabbed ahold of my old Black Flag albums, along with D.R.I. (before they became a metal band), Wasted Youth, Verbal Abuse, M.D.C., Free Beer, etc.
But NOW I realize that the mid-80's era Black Flag was actually brilliant, and Live '84 showcases a band that was way ahead of it's time in a lot of ways. You have it all here; the punk rock of "Nervous Breakdown", the sexual twistedness of "Slip It In", the suffocating atmosphere of "Black Coffee"....man, this cd has it all.
The sound quality is good too.
If you want to experience a band that was highly misunderstood within the confines of the hardcore punk scene in the mid-80's, then by all means, buy this! This is a soundtrack to the emotional state of most of us at the time, and byt the way, for those of you who are young; it "rocks"
Thanks!
A Fantastic Live Album!!.......2004-08-12
I love Black Flag and "Live 84'" is a great live album by them. It is filled with songs that have been classics from previouse albums. Just great stuff. Not much more to say about it but awesome!
20 years ago? No way!.......2004-05-21
By far, this is Black Flag's best. They never were much of a studio group, but once the songs found their way onto the stage, Ginn & Co. would mangle them into pure, raw musical terror. I survived two Black Flag shows, including one in '84, and this CD, especially the first six tracks, captures the amazing power that this group wielded. Hard to believe twenty years have passed since this recording, and it's even harder to believe that anyone could take "punk" or any other purportedly "hardcore" group seriously after listening to "Live '84."
EXCELLENT!.......2003-06-16
HENRY ROLLINS AND GREG GINN LIVE AND RAW, ENOUGH SAID! Everybody says oh Damaged was Black Flag's greatest record, but I don't think so. This record really showcases the ax precision of Mr. Greg Ginn, and it shows the hardcore lyrical talent of Mr. Henry Rollins. This is an amazing album to say the least. If you like punk and hardcore you should definitly pick this cd up, you will not be dissapointed.
Inimitable Greg Ginn.......2002-11-30
I love it! Nice to see some people here who think along the lines I do, bringing up for comparison "Ascension" from Coltrane's late period, and the guitarist Derek Bailey who collaborated with jazz avant-gardist Anthony Braxton. I was lucky enough to attend numerous Flag concerts, and '84 was the year they attained their technical, musical, and philosophical maturity. Sadly, it was the year the band peaked, as drivel like "Loose Nut" attests. But in their concerts and three 1984 releases, Black Flag forged a devastating meld of punk, metal, and free jazz, and articulated a rage against society, nature, consciousness, you name it. There is a paranoia in the closing three songs of "My War," for instance, that is not only interpersonal but metaphysical; if you don't believe me, listen to the words for yourself. Later I came to believe that what Werner Herzog undertook in his films, Black Flag tried to do in its music, to resist all the pressures and influences surrounding your life, to arrive at whatever genuine existence you have. Even if this project was flawed by circuitous reasoning from the start, there was a nobility in the effort.
This live album has the most of Greg Ginn, a supreme guitarist who got buzzes and pierces from his instrument like no one else I've heard. It has enough of Henry Rollins without too much, thank goodness, and the rhythm section of Kira Roessler and Bill Stevenson was the tightest the band ever had and played off Ginn the best. The album has a raw feel, and the songs simply feel less scripted than on their studio versions. It may be an unlikely candidate, but "Live '84" is probably Black Flag's shining moment of darkness. Glad to see it's on CD; it was first released on cassette only, and I've been hanging onto my tape, trying to preserve it for all these years!

A Really Great Album.......2007-04-17
This is one of the best albums Windham Hill ever produced. It features Barbara Higbie, Darol Anger, Andy Narell, Mike Marshall and Todd Phillips playing in a live performance that is pure magic. A friend of mine described it as "happy music" because it is impossible to listen to it without smiling.
My first fix of Anger........2004-09-21
Once upon a time, there was a new start-up label called Windham Hill. A small west coast enterprise that had been the shared vision of Will Ackerman and Anne Robinson, its founders, it boasted a stable of fresh talent the likes of which few such new labels did. And, to keep operational matters under control, rather than dilute its own efforts, Windham Hill partnered with A&M Records to handle its distribution in those early days. A smart move at the time.
Some years later, Windham Hill became "the Windham Hill Division of BMG" and, for those who know the BMG entertainment conglomerate (Bertelsmann Music Group) story, it is, in microcosm, the story of "how not to run a music enterprise." In time, most of the talent in that stable moved on, some to find happy homes elsewhere and some not.
One of the casualties of the various Windham Hill "catalog shakeouts" that were part of BMG's "corporate pain" over the years was this early Darol Anger effort, "Live at Montreux: Darol Anger/Barbara Higbie Quintet." It was among my initial Windham Hill acquisitions virtually two decades ago. (Shortly afterward, I acquired another Darol Anger effort, "Chiaroscuro," featuring a near-identical artist complement, but a studio production rather than a live concert.)
In fact, this album *was* "my first fix of Anger," a fact for which I'm grateful to Will Ackerman, since I've subsequently become a Darol Anger completist. And, although this album may no longer be in the Windham Hill catalog, it is listed here, copies from Amazon marketplace partners are available, and that is good enough for me to write about this "first fix."
The quintet, recorded live at the Montreux Jazz Festival (in Montreux, Switzerland at an "Evening with Windham Hill"), includes Darol on violins, Barbara Higbie on piano, Mike Marshall on guitar and mandolin, Todd Phillips on acoustic bass and Andy Narell on steel drums. For its time, this ensemble instrumentation produced a totally fresh and unique sound, not least of which was due to Andy Narell's steel drum work, in addition to Darol's totally fresh approach to fiddling.
Some of the highlights of this collector's item:
The lead-off track, "Egrets," features great steel drum work by Andy Narell and acoustic bass by Todd Phillips.
"The Lights In The Sky Are Stars" has nice piano work by Higbie, guitar work by Marshall, and swinging violin by Anger, with more great steel drum back-up work by Narell. This track, as much as any, defined a new steel drum style that wasn't calypso. It's improvised - and totally acoustic - jazz. Period.
"Daughter of Cups" is a nicely lyrical Higbie piano work. "Egypt" opens with Marshall on mandolin, with Higbie, Narell and Phillips setting a good rhythm line; then Anger comes swerving in with his violin, with a chorus that is full of his quirky offbeat rhythms, jazzy ornamentation and soaring lines. Higbie then takes the melody from Anger; makes a nice improvisatory run with it, and hands it off to Narell for his solo, to close out the track.
"In What Hour" starts with a piano/guitar intro; then Darol swinging away on his violin. Once again, there is excellent bass support from Phillips and percussion from Narell. The piece bridges to an upbeat tempo in the final 2 minutes or so, nicely swinging, everyone getting their licks in. Nice warm audience reaction at the end.
"Tideline" has a nice hard-driving pulse set up by Higbie and reinforced by Phillips; this time Anger takes it up into the higher strings, swapping licks with Marshall on mandolin.
"Near Northern" may be my favorite "early Windham Hill track" irrespective of artist(s). Simply put, this track is a trip that rips! Great acoustic bass and guitar support from Phillips and Marshall; great piano work by Higbie; soaring double-stops by Anger. The ultimate feel-good high!
At a few minutes under an hour (typical for early CDs), this album may, to some, seem too short. But I measure my albums by the quality of their content, and the content here is all first class. Not to mention the fact that it (and its "Chiaroscuro" stablemate, listed elsewhere at Amazon as ASIN B00000AF3J) got me started on two decades' worth of subsequent Darol Anger albums of such eclecticism that he almost defies categorization. I'd call that an wise investment, not a profligate purchase!

Major Windham Hill release from the 1980s.......2003-04-28
This is, according to the liner notes, the entire concert played on July 19th, 1984 at the Montreux Jazz Festival, in Montreux, Switzerland. Musicians are: Darol Anger, violins; Barbara Higbie, piano; Mike Marshall, guitar, mandolin; Todd Phillips, up-right bass; and Andy Narell, steel drums. 55 minutes running time, there are 10 tracks in all, not 8 as listed here. As the samples demonstrate, this is not 'new age' but acoustic-based music, with a jazz/classical/contemporary sensibility (no synthesizers are used).

The Cool Ruler Rules.......2004-09-25
With this album, we can certainly see why he's known as the cool ruler. Gregory's masterful skills on "Mr. Brown" "Don't Wanna Be Lonely Tonight" "Soon Foward," and other great hits is a treat for all Gregory Isaac lovers like myself. Gregory is certainly in a class by himself; the untouchable Gregory Isaacs. Check out other great Gregory albums such as, "Night Nurse" "Red Roses for Gregory" "Out Deh" "IOU" "Watchman of the City" "Easy Lover" and of course don't forget to check out "Pardon Me," featuring the hit "Mr. Cop" with Macka B (wicked song man!) That entire album is wicked, it's definitely Greogory at his best.

This is one of my favorite albums of all time. I've been a fan for over 20 years. When I'm feeling iri and want to dance, this takes me beyond ... best to listen late on a summer night, after you get home and it's just your woman and you. I know this music will be playing in heaven.
The Cool Ruler.......2003-08-16
I bought this cassette when it first came out in 1984 and I still listen to it everyday. I'm buying the CD to make sure I can continue to listen to this great album for many more years to come. The songs are excellent, strictly "bubble" reggae. My favorites: Substitute, Mr. Brown, Border. If you love roots reggae music, this is the album to buy.

"INTEGRAL REGGAE".......2000-11-27
Somehow in the whirlwind of music from the 80's and 90's I had regrettably omitted Black Uhuru from my concertgoing experiences.
Now - at a chance seeing of Michael Rose Live in November 2000, I found myself with a golden opportunity to revisit the Black Uhuru "Live '84" CD with new eyes, having had NO knowledge whatsoever of either Rose or Uhuru previously. Rose performed live in concert many of the titles included in this collection. The arrangements are so unique to the artform & brilliantly constructed that I could only WONDER at what could be the sound from 1984; which also included the stellar Sly & Robbie Rythym Section and more lead-guitar based rock stylings of the era.
Every song Rose did live became instantly familiar, due in part to the "anthem" like quality many selections possessed. Upon leaving the current live concert I was absolutely convinced that we'd seen one of the most important legends in the history of reggae music.
Hearing Black Uhuru, therefore, at their height with Rose, was a priority. With a drama and deep relevance, the 1984 piece is a sound captured as on its stark cover with the naked painted letters in black and white. The songs ring out with purpose, heartfelt depth; and yet hope and healing, as Rose chants, wails and styles his way through the pulsating collection of work - Black Uhuru insistently behind him in all its color schemes.
The more I hear this CD the greater its significance becomes. This is a true, unabashed artistry that makes no apologies. Reggae here was taken into entirely new vistas, and this is the historical documentation of the true achievement that brought a Grammy to Rose and Uhuru for their groundbreaking and dynamic music. Ironically enough, it is very futuristic as well, as artists such as Buju Banton have been trying to take reggae back to its Conscious development based on this style.
Get this - play it somewhat at decent volume, and take yourself to where the spiritual moves the music to the message!

This 2CD set documents an amazing Sun Ra Arkestra performance in all their mid-80s splendor. The sound quality is a bit dodgy in places but overall is quite good (espeically compared to most other live Sun Ra albums.) At this point in his long, varied, and mysterious career, Sunny was presenting epic-length concerts melding all his influences into one big beautiful musical happening. There are the classic "space jazz" free-form jams with high-register reed pyrotechnics and synthesizer explorations. There are the inevitable hypnotic (and danceable!) "Space Chants". The loose blues jams. Even a gorgeous and tender (yet edgy?) Sun Ra piano solo of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow." You'll be movin' your feet to the romping, tribal "Nuclear War". There's more: a lightning speed jam on "Big John's Special"...Respectful interpretations of "Satin Doll" and "Days of Wine and Roses"...Fun and games with "Mack the Knife"...a lovely "untitled improvisation"... folks, if it's Sun Ra it's here at its best. While no Sun Ra album has ever compared to the experience I had seeing him live in 1986, this is as close as it gets. Buy it!
