5 out of 5 stars Wonderful...........2007-03-15

Raw, heartfelt, healing....both music and lyrics blend together quite beautifully...Lori delivers pure emotion and experience through an magical voice and incredible skill on the guitar...

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-03-06

I love this CD. It's raw and emotional, and you can hear the pureness of just Lori McKenna's voice and guitar throughout the tracks.

5 out of 5 stars An impromptu masterpiece........2005-04-28

If you like a perfect blend of passionate poetic expression, primally appealing music, and extremely keen insight than you will find this to be a masterpiece indeed.

5 out of 5 stars Lori Never quits...........2003-11-26

Amazing me with her talent. I bought this cd from Lori after seeing her play in August. This cd is special because Lori recorded most of it herself with a minidisc recorder and a pocket mic at her Kitchen Table (hence the name). These songs are full of thoughtful, inspiring, emotional lyrics that I have come to know and love. I could not stop listening to this cd for about a week right after I bought it and everytime I hear it now, it sounds better and better. My favorites from this album are 'Afternoons' (which has a hidden track after it), 'Bible Song', 'The Other Boys', and 'Falter'. If you are a fan of Lori then let me tell you that this album has been worth the wait, her voice and lyrics are as outstanding as ever.

The best thing ,for me, about Lori's songs is that she writes about situations to which nearly everyone can relate... the death of a loved one, the kid at school whom everyone picked on, the constrictions of small town life, being played by someone, and a whole host of other issues concerning life and love.

Lori's passion is unmatched and comes through clear and simple on this cd. Knowing that there were no alterations made to the music or her voice makes Lori all the more talented to me. Anyone can sound good when they are in a studio working with tons of equipment that can make the Chipmunks sound like Mariah Carey. Lori is one of the greatest songwriters I have heard, and her voice blends just right with her lyrics and music. To write songs is one thing, to sing them is another, to put music to them is yet another, and Lori does them all, perfectly!!

1 out of 5 stars Unbelievable! Just Unbelievable!.......2006-04-09

First of all I'm upset that I didn't have an option of awarding this disaster zero stars. But that's another story.

I must be old-fashioned because in my day most vocalists could carry a tune and if they had instruments could play them at the very least with some degree of mediocrity. The Raincoats are a total mess from the first note and beyond. Anyone who could give this music 5 stars must be brain dead. I suspect that it's probably fashionable to jump on the bandwagon for a band (and I use the word very loosely) with absolutely no talent. Getting a root canal with a pneumatic drill would be more entertaining. Anyone buying this CD should be subject to intense psychotherapy.

3 out of 5 stars Too much hype?.......2004-07-19

Yeah this cd is pretty interesting. I just don't know how special a band like the Raincoats is. At moments it approaches perfection, but then the singing just utterly ruins it. It reminds me of a lot of things, early Sonic Youth, early new wave stuff like Blondie etc. also reminds me a lot of some Dick's Picks Grateful Dead shows cause it has that same kind of sloppiness to it. I picked it up cause I heard of how 'genius' the band is, and I guess its the same thing as the hype around Wesley Willis or that one retarded band that did "My pal foot foot" minus the novelty appeal. The songs are nice, the drums are really nice, but the execution just aint so great. Skip it, or don't, I don't care.

1 out of 5 stars ummm... maybe I am in left feild picking daisy's but............2004-02-23

I just didn't vibe with this band. They sort of sound like 'The Ex' which is a GREAT BAND (check them out) but they lost me with their signing. This would be a great band if they didn't sing. Its almost like going to the dentist.

5 out of 5 stars From bedknocks to broomsticks.......2002-04-05

This CD is sooo gooood, i just had to write another review for it. I mean if you don't buy this CD you will never know how far you could have gone in life. This CD explains some of the harder things in life, it shows you how to get through life in a action packed fun filled way. Smoke that.

5 out of 5 stars jump, jive.......2001-11-13

The raincoats, what can i say I love em. I think the best way to describe their music is like this "soul inspiring anthems that get in yer head and stick there like grip tape" There is just something about listing to girls who can't sing and are even worse at playing.

5 out of 5 stars great music from the kitchen........2006-12-26

this is a fantastic cd. music recorded in a home, not a studio, with a fresh energetic feel. all lovers of bluegrass should have this, and even if you have no other bluegrass recordings, i don't see how you could not love the great music on this disc.

5 out of 5 stars A must for bluegrassers everywhere.......2000-02-14

I feel kind of bad reviewing this without even listening to the whole thing but i feel that i have to ... i heard it last night for the first time and fell in love. The whole CD was recorded by David Grisman in 1963 in Red Allen's kitchen in Maryland ... its just Red and Frank and every note is crystal clear. Everything from hot picking tunes to lonesome harmony to babies crying in the background. I borrowed it from my friend to listen to it today and somehow it disappered ... so i'm here ... ordering one for him and one for me. (mando players listen to this! )

    Album Description

Founded in 1971 by video artists Woody and Steina Vasulka, The Kitchen is internationally known as a leading center for video, music, dance, performance, new media and literature. The first institution to focus exclusively on cutting-edge, multidisciplinary works, it has been a powerful force in shaping the cultural landscape of this country. Over the last thirty years The Kitchen has documented every one of its performances with video and/or audiotape. However, in recent years much of this documentation, primarily recorded on what are now obsolete formats, began deteriorating. In 1999, under the leadership of Executive Director Elise Bernhardt, and with the dedication of The Kitchen9s Board of Directors and the help of numerous donors, The Kitchen began an initiative to catalog and re-master its extensive collection of 3600 videotapes. In the fall of 2001, an additional trove of audio recordings from the 1970s was discovered. While these tapes promised rare and exciting music by such artists as John Cage, Philip Glass, Laurie Anderson, and David Tudor (in the first box alone!), none of this material could be accessed without proper cleaning and re-formatting and the funds and facilities to do so. A recent collaborative partnership with The Looking Glass Studios and Philip Glass9 label, Orange Mountain Music, has allowed for the restoration of a number of audio reels. This work has been done with the goal of producing a series of CDs, From The Kitchen Archives, with New Music, New York 1979 as the first release. This 2-disc set offers re-mastered recordings from the landmark New Music, New York: A Festival of Composers and their Music, held at the Kitchen9s 484 Broome Street space in SoHo from June 8-16, 1979. The festival, which set a standard for new and contemporary music, paved the way for New Music America, the annual event that emerged the following year in Minneapolis and ran in various cities until 1990. Now 25 years later, these recordings are an invaluable time-capsule, a privileged view/listen into a historic event, initially heard by only a few hundred people. Beyond their historic value they offer brilliant and exciting music by composers now considered masters of the genre, as well as remarkable performances by figures nearly forgotten. While many recordings from the festival could be restored, several gaps remain: concerts that were either not recorded or whose tapes vanished into the ether of the last 25 years. That said, we feel extremely fortunate to be able to release New Music, New York 1979 as our first CD in a series that promises to make available more lost treasures from The Kitchen Archives, uncovering the origins of new music today.

This very rare import on Virgin/4AD (1994) exists in TWO versions, one with 18 tracks recorded live in Paris for Radio France (track listing provided in another review), and a second version (even rarer) that adds the Kitchen Tapes and has 21 tracks.

The disc comes in a custom opaque black plastic case with the artwork stenciled on the front and back covers, and as far as I know, never included paper inserts or liner notes inside (just the disc).

Personnel included: Frank, Lyle Workman, Eric Drew Feldman, Nick Vincent. Excellent sound quality, very listenable, and the band is tight. Frank sings in English but speaks to the audience in French!!! Essential for any fan of the big man, and a testimony to his unique genius.

Forget it. I'm a big fan of FB & the Pixies, but this has got 'contractual obligation' written all over it. A pretty ordinary quality recording and the music is pretty lacklustre. I have every Pixies / FB album, including singles, and this is by far the worst. Only get if you have to complete your collection, and even then, don't expect much.

5 out of 5 stars The Best way to listen to Frank Black.......1999-06-17

The guy's a genius. I know some of the critics think it's a poor effort, but how can you criticize the soul that this live recording puts into the songs? And the final track, an acoustic version of "Abstract Plain", just tops off a great set.
