Hootenanny
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
Hootenanny is the last album on which the Replacements fully embraced recklessness as a recording tactic; consequently, it's their last love-it-or-hate-it LP. Here's one vote for love. As with the band's disorderly (but damned entertaining) debut, Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash, Hootenanny is enlivened by the odd hardcore thrasher ("Run It" and "You Lose"). Frontman Paul Westerberg stretches out here, however, with the bluesy "Willpower" and "Take Me to the Hospital" and unveils his sensitive side on the one-man-band avowal "Within Your Reach," a taste of things to come. The title track opens the album on a haphazard note, and the Mats barely hold things together with the sodden closer, "Treatment Bound," but that damn-the-tempo-let's-just-play spirit is what makes Hootenanny a better record than a latter stab at stardom like Don't Tell a Soul. --Steven Stolder --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

You just need one look at Rob Zombie to know that the guy knows a thing or two about Halloween. He really proves his mettle--and his metal, for that matter--on this loud, garish, downright fun collection of rip-roaring devil's music. There's actually very little to be afraid of, to tell the truth--unless, that is, you have a phobia about the kind of goofy good times laid down by Zombie and pals like Rocket from the Crypt, Satan's Pilgrims, and the wrestling-masked power-surf combo Los Straitjackets (who turn in a hypercharged "Munsters Theme"). The garishly groovy package, which features some of Zombie's most over-the-top cartoon illustrations, is rife with haunting hoedowns like the Dead Elvi's "The Creature Stole My Surfboard." More fun than a coven meeting any day. --David Sprague

Ghoulish fun-eral for the ghouls and boils!.......2007-01-18
A fun collection of jaunty tunes for year-'round revery, in a "spook surf", martini-sipping sort of way. Amidst the undead 50's-style rockabilly, many of which are enhanced with sound effects, we hear from "Zacherie", a ghoulish host regailing the listener with haunted tales sure to add that certain spicy ingredient to the Witch's brew.
A GREAT ALBUM!!!!.......2006-10-23
I had this album when it first came out (years and years ago) and wore it out. But like many albums when I was a teen, it got lost. Now for some reason, my interest is peaked again and I have gotten another copy and I have a feeling it will be worn out too. Highlights for me are RFTC "I Drink Blood" and Southern Culture on the Skids "Werewolf". It's fun at this time of year to cruise around or just sit at home and enjoy some great Halloween-inspired music.
Voodoorific.......2006-09-12
I don't know why anyone hasn't talked about the best band and song on here, DEADBOLT's Psychic Voodoo Doll puts all the other songs on this album to shame. The whole album is good, but if you love DEADBOLT this is definatley a collectible..".you mess with me and you'll roast in the flames, ahhhh".
Great Halloween dance music.......2006-09-12
Bought this albumn for a Halloween party last year for kids aged 5 - 9. I was able to create a dance mix from many of the songs on this albumn. Much hipper music than Monster Mash, etc. Much more danceable than the Halloween New Wave albumn.
STAB STAB STAB DEATH DEATH DEATH ROCK ROCK ROCK SURF SURF SURF!.......2006-05-13
Every song on this CD is perfect to rock out on Halloween with.. BUT what I want to know is WHY and HOW did SURF music end up associated with HORROR and HALLOWEEN! I mean it started in the fifties with bands like BOBBY BORIS PICKET and the KRYPT KICKERS and THE BLOBS etc. but why?
Check out THE FAMOUS MONSTERS you'll love it if you like this CD.. it's SEAN YSEULT from WHITE ZOMBIE's surf band!

Transitional, yet Enjoyable (3.5 stars).......2006-07-20
"Hootenanny" can't touch the 'Mats best work, but it's always a fun listen. Three of the songs here ("Willpower," "Color Me Impressed," and the gorgeous "Within Your Reach") hint at greater things to come on their next album. The remainder of "Hootenanny" ranges from enjoyable punk ("Take Me to the Hospital" and "Run It") to listenable filler. It's this eclecticism that prevents "Hootenanny" from matching the sheer joy of "Sorry Ma.." or the indie pop of the 'Mats later albums. Nevertheless, "Hootenanny" belongs in the collection of every true Replacements fan.
come on do the whole thing.......2004-06-16
"ramshackle, raucous, raw. the three r's." Pope John Paul announced this into his microphone after hearing this album at some event in 1983. All I hear is four snot-nosed punks putting their lives on the line in some doomed attempt to save rock & roll from 1980's Sting and his wretched Police.
It's Fun!.......2004-05-02
The Replacements' second album sounds like a fun time. It also sounds like they had a fun time recording it with funny tunes like "Hootenanny", a nice hardcore song "Run It", the huge spin-off "Mr. Whirly", a song making fun of love shows on the radio "Lovelines", the hard-rockin' "Take Me Down to the Hospital" and practically every song they did on here has some kind of joke in it, which some people may not like. But there is one serious song on here-"Within Your Reach". It's a sad song that Paul Westerberg did on his own and it's a good tune.
So, all in all it is a huge step up for the 'Mats and paves up a way to the supreme "Let it Be".
Not for everyone.......2004-01-26
Look, you either get this album or you don't. People who rate this album low don't get it - and consequently they don't understand what made the 'Mats a great band in the first place. To me, owning only the major label Replacements albums is like reading half of a novel. It's raw and unpolished - yeah, the sound quality is lacking, obviously - the 'Mats were 4 kids from Minneapolis on a small-time label back then. I wouldn't change a thing - consider it a timepiece, an artifact of an era. Great stuff.
Great band just not their best work.......2003-11-27
I had heard that this cd was The Replacements at their punk best.
Excited I purchased the cd immediately. I already own the Replacement's don't tell a soul, all shook down, pleased to meet me and Tim. This was the worst cd of theirs. Production value was miserable. The songs themselves sound rushed. None of the lyrics are memorable. If 4 drunk guys grabbed some instruments and started playing at a bar it would sound like this cd.
Don't buy it.

Dedication, precision, and grace can happily coexist with frivolity and creativity, as flat-picking guitarist David Grier has proved often in the past. Combining incredible technique, masterful timing, plenty of soul, and sheer enjoyment is what Grier does best--Hootenanny, the debut release on his own Dreadnought Recordings, continues this trend. Along with kindred spirits Tim O'Brien (mandolin, fiddle, bouzouki, the occasional off-beat vocal) and Dirk Powell (banjo, fiddle, accordion, bass), Grier invests a wide range of traditional and original material with a distinct old-time flair. The pared-down arrangements give Grier ample space to make his statements, whether with lighting-quick but unhurried leads or with nifty supporting passages. Speedy fiddle tunes accompany down-home blues, winsome ballads, and vibrant reels and rags. As usual, he makes the decades-old sound refreshingly new, and his remarkable guitar work seems to only improve with time, the function of a man who rarely takes the instrument off his neck. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
Very nice all around.......2002-07-03
This isn't as powerful an effort as, say, "Freewheeling", but it's certainly a solid album. All the tunes, as can be expected from Grier, are inevntive and masterfully performed, but tracks such as High Dad in the Morning and Ragtime Annie just aren't as compelling as the tunes themselves have the potential to be. On the other hand, Little Rabbit, Have You Ever Been to England, and Have You Ever Seen the Devil Uncle Joe (or maybe just Uncle Joe) are straight up smoking, and the arrangements of Clinch Mountain Backstep, Old Joe Clark, and especially Red-Haired Boy are intriguing...they realy opened up my perception of what's possible with those tunes.
All in all, a solid album worth having, especially if you're a guitar player. In my view, David Grier stands out above all other flatpickers of the post-Norman Blake/Tony Rice generation.
A showcase for an incredible musician.......2001-06-26
David Grier .... is the finest flatpicking guitarist in the world today. He has expanded upon the foundation established by Doc Watson, Clarence White, and Tony Rice to bring flatpicking to a new level of innovation. Acoustic Guitar magazine chose Grier as one of only 15 "Artists of the Decade" because of his originality and musicianship. In selecting him, they also selected this CD, Hootenanny, as essential listening.
Because of the trio format used on this CD (Grier is joined by Dirk Powell and Tim O'Brien), Grier's guitar is given ample room to shine. The CD is a mix of traditional tunes and originals. The traditional tunes showcase Grier's ability to rework old chestnuts into something fresh. The original tunes showcase his songwriting abilities and innovative technique. "Have You Ever Been To England" is a favorite and perhaps the best example of Grier's playing, although it's difficult to capture Grier's diversity in a single tune or even a single CD.
Note that if you're having trouble ordering Grier's CDs, they are also available via his web site.
Classic........2000-06-09
This is very gritty, traditional sounding folk jams.......by a virtuostic acoustic flat picker, and it kicks butt.
Minimalist in the instumentation, heavy guitar picking and fiddle playing...it rocks, ...in a down home, county fair and hooteny kind of way.
True to its name.
Outstanding!.......1999-03-06
David Grier is a master musician. This is an excellent CD. I want to be just like him if I grow up.

All recorded live at the 1999 Hootenanny Festival at Oak Canyon Ranch, CA. It is basically all hard rocking rock-a-billy bands such as Reverend Horton Heat, Derailers, Mike Ness, Royal Crown Revue, Deke Dickerson, Dave Alvin, Lee Rocker, Amazing Crowns, Paladins and others I never heard of.
