Missing a few but a solid collection.......2007-07-24
This collection contains most of Blondie's best with a few exceptions, most notably, "X-Offender" and "I'm Always Touched by Your Presence, Dear." Hardcore fans have noted different versions here, but the casual fan will be satisfied with this set. Blondie has always been about style over substance, but definitely has influenced such artists as Madonna and Gwen Stefani. The range of music they cover from rap to reggae also demonstrates rock's amazing ability to encompass many different sounds and this demonstrates Blondie's impact on popular music.
The DVD has a different effect. While the music has a timelessness that will hold up, the videos are like a time capsule showing how much this art form has changed and now ends up being a curiosity. For the most part they are lip sync performance clips with a few very dated effects. You'll watch it once and then forget about it.
Fantastic, but far from perfect..........2007-06-14
Blondie is my favorite band and I have all of their albums, so I was curious to compare this collection with their first hits collection, The Best of Blondie (1982), and their other Greatest Hits album from 2002.
Sound & Vision is much better than The Best of Blondie, with vastly improved sound quality and a bigger selection of songs. The only songs that The Best of Blondie contains that this collection does not are "(I'm Always Touched By Your) Presence, Dear" and the original version of "In the Flesh"--the version of the latter on Sound & Vision is an awful remix with brand new vocals by Debbie Harry, and it sounds NOTHING like the original. Sound & Vision is certainly preferable to The Best of Blondie, though, no matter how you look at it.
However, when compared to the 2002 Greatest Hits CD, Sound & Vision doesn't fair quite as well, not taking into account the bonus DVD with music videos. Greatest Hits has nearly every song from this collection--it does NOT include "Good Boys" or "End To End" from The Curse of Blondie, released in 2004, nor the "Rapture Riders" mash-up, but makes up for it with the inclusion of "(I'm Always Touched By Your) Presence, Dear" and "X Offender", two of Blondie's best songs. It also includes the original version of "In the Flesh" in lieu of the pointless remix. Those factors alone, along with the fact that Greatest Hits is quite a bit cheaper than this collection, make Greatest Hits worth getting instead of Sound & Vision.
So, how does Sound & Vision hold up on its own? It is a decent collection of Blondie's most popular songs, but they are mostly radio edits and not the full album versions. They even dared to chop off the openings of "Heart of Glass", Atomic" and "The Tide is High"! Another huge mistake: The incredibly charming French portion of "Sunday Girl" has been removed and substituted by an English translation that the producers must have forced Debbie Harry to record as a backup. The remix included for "Good Boys" is decent, and much MUCH better than the remix for "In the Flesh", but the album version is still the best. The remastering is swell, but in some cases I prefer the remasters of the original album versions (for example, "Union City Blue").
If you're a diehard Blondie fan like me, you will want Sound & Vision for the bonus DVD, which includes some of Blondie's best music videos. These are not traditional music videos because they were all produced before MTV, but rather they are performance videos of the band lip-synching to the studio versions of the songs. My personal favorite of the videos is "Rapture", but "Heart of Glass", "Denis", "Hanging on the Telephone", "Dreaming" and "The Hardest Part" are favorites as well. The worst of them by far is "The Tide of High"--love the song, but the video is T-E-R-R-I-B-L-E.
Most casual listeners will not be concerned with the things I am nitpicking about here. But unless you must have the videos, you would be better off purchasing the 2002 Greatest Hits collection because of the cheaper price tag. Thankfully, I found this collection for $12 used, or else I would have bought Greatest Hits, too.

One of The Best Blondie Greatest Hits.......2007-01-15
A terrific collection of their greatest hits. Excellent sound quality and comes with a bonus dvd! Although, the re-make of "In The Flesh" I thought was boring and rather dull. Should have just put the original on the line-up and left it alone. It was their first break through hit and the original recording is really pretty. The original recording of "Good Boys" should have been put on there as well. I think the whole thing would be truly excellent had they done that. Otherwise, great collection for Blondie fans and the non alike!
Once I had a band, and they were a gas........2007-01-11
Blondie have finally got the respect they truly deserve. Seeing them inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was pretty cool (they even had an onstage snit to prove they were still loaded with attitude), and this collection is just frosting on the beater.
On the plus side, you get three interesting "new" items. There's a previously unavailable mix of "Good Boys" (from "The Curse of Blondie" CD), a new mix of "In The Flesh" (which doesn't better the original) and an outrageous mash-up of The Doors Vs Blondie with "Rapture Riders" (and its accompanying video!). The interesting thing about the new "In The Flesh" is that you can imagine the new breed of Rock/pop goddesses like Gwen Stefani of Brittany Spears tackling it - and knowing they wouldn't have a peroxided molecule of the sass that Debbie Harry has.
Blondie was always about flash and glamour, which is what made their best albums ("Parallel Lines" and "Eat To The Beat") so charmingly eclectic and their best singles so earth shattering. They were the first "new-wave" band to score a number one with -- Fer crying out loud -- a disco song, and were the very first band to chart a hit rap song that mashed-up rap and pop. (It was nearly 6 years later that Run-DMC would share video space with the resurgent Aerosmith.) Even the lesser know singles are killer. "The Hardest Part" has got to be the fiercest Debbie Harry vocal, and the French/English version of "Denis" is a lost classic.
The DVD is a hoot. It is kind of striking to see these primitive MTV era bits from "Heart Of Glass" and "Rapture." It's worth it just to see the band in their young and hungry stages...hard to believe that the band that recorded the terrific "Maria" were in their 50s. All great archival material.
Minor quibble - single edits. But these were SMASH singles, and it just goes to show you that there is no shame in being a pop band, and there is also no reason a pop band can't have a major impact on popular culture. Thanks to this new CD/DVD set from Blondie, you can now join in with those who call the music of Debbie Harry and company a pleasure without using the word "guilty" as a preface. Although the 2002 "Greatest Hits" is probably a better CD for the casual listener, for us fans, this is absolutely worth the bucks.

Blondie at their best.......2005-05-01
Blondie (1976.) Blondie's first album.
One of the best-known pop acts of the late seventies and early-mid eighties was Blondie. The group, fronted by Debbie Harry, released a plethora of eighties new wave pop hit that always charted high. The group best became known late in the seventies and remained such in the eighties, but because of the lack of hits the group scored early on, people tend to overlook the stuff the group recorded in their early days. The self-titled debut release from the band came out in 1976, and sadly, failed to make any big hits. How does the album measure up? Read on for my review of it.
I think it's a shame this album is so underrated - I personally think this is the best sort of material the group ever recorded! In their early days, Blondie had a lot more punk influence in their music and it shows through and through. Granted, we're not talking heavy and angry punk to the extent of, say, the Sex Pistols, but it's certainly more punky than anything else the group would ever release from this point on. Although this stuff differs greatly from the hit songs the band would release a few years later, I think this stuff is WAY better than any of that. If you're a fan of any of the punk rock that surfaced in the late seventies, there's a very good chance you're going to enjoy this album - even if you're not a big Blondie fan (I know I'm not a huge fan of their popular stuff, but I enjoy this!) It's really redundant for me to write anything else here, because I think I've made my point pretty clear - early Blondie RULES!
As if this album wasn't cool enough the way it was, the record company decided to do one better and reissue the album with bonus tracks and expanded liner notes! The bonus tracks feature some early demos and single versions of songs on the album. The album was pretty sweet the way it was, but this stuff is the icing on the cake.
Whether you're that Blondie fan going back to buy all the albums you missed out on before, or you just like classic seventies punk-style music, this is a release that is not to be missed. Blondie, sadly, would never sound this cool again, and even more unfortunate is the fact that this era of their career is the one that gets the least publicity. Don't overlook it the way other people have - making the same mistake they have could prove fatal if you're into this sort of thing!

crisp, fresh and rockin even 25 years later. most interesting lyrics of any of the early blondie (and who really cares about post-parallel lines blondie?). great guitar and organ. underrated drumming on the solos and breaks. lesbian underthemes (seen later in sunday girl and pretty baby). and that voice, all sex.
debbie harry was a huge pioneer.
Arguably, Blondie's Best.......2004-11-29
This album sounds like 1966--that blissful year in which so many eclectic sounds, from Motown to Go-Go Beat and British Invasion, to early Mod and pre Psychadelic, co-existed on the airwaves. "X Offender", "Little Girl Lies" and "in The Flesh", which open the album, all sound like Phil Spectorish girl-group recordings, albeit with spicier lyrics. On "Look Good In Blue" the band has the good humor to perform a rock song with a tango beat in dead earnest, as well as the memorable line "I could give you some head....and shoulders to lie on". "In The Sun" in my opinion is the most exhilerating Blondie song ever; the simple melodic hook is breathtakingly catchy, and the instrument playing the main riff sounds like something between a foghorn and a vacuum cleaner! (It is probably a synthesizer). Whatever it is, it is emblematic of the inspired innovation apparent throughout this album. "A Shark In Jets Clothing" is Blondie's homage to "West Side Story", and that closes Side 1 (or it did in the days of vinyl anyway). Side 2 began with the Latin-flavored "Man Overboard" which again revisits the girl group sound, and boasts background vocals by legendary 60's songstress Ellie Greenwhich herself. Beautiful keyboard solo by Jimmy Destri sounds makes Blondie sound like The Doors on this cut. Then, "Rip Her To Shreds" reminds the listener that the Blondie of this album was initially a "punk" band from the CBGBs circuit. But unlike most punk rock, the song's aggressiveness is mostly satire--a comic book treatment of viciousness and female backbiting. Debbie is at her vampy best in the spoken parts "Hey! Pss Pss! Here she comes now!....Bye Bye Sugar! And not a minute too soon!" And the arrangement is perfect. "Rifle Range" follows, again with a slightly Doors-y feel. The lyrics are very out-there, in a similar way as Van Dyke Parks/Brian Wilson collaborations. Hauntingly beautiful lead guitar lines highlight this strange and compelling track. "Kung Gu Girls" which follows, is another in the "Rip Her To Shreds" aggressive vein. Again, we are in a comic book, with Debbie hollering "Kung Fu Cindy Sue, Oh I wanna get close to you, you're my Kung Fu Girl!..." Hysterical. Closing the collection is the conga-line looniness of "Attack of the Giant Ants' complete with a mid-song ant-attack with screams and police sirens! When the song ends suddenly, the fade out features lounge music on a piano and the sound of people talking at a party--very Beatles circa White Album! I really miss the Blondie featured here, they didn't survive this incarnation, and by the time of "Plastic Letters" of the following year, a lof the fun was already gone, dissapating progressively with each album that followed. I would say it died after "Eat to the Beat". But listening to "Blondie" always purifies my world, cleaning it up and making it all seem fun again. And "In the Sun" is a musical anti-depressant garaunteed to lift you up. You've never heard Blondie like this before. CD extras include the 1975 demos--a trifle lackluster but a must for fans, along with the original 7" versions of "X Offender" and "In The Sun" with alternate vocals---inferior to the album mixes but interesting anyway. They show how much Debbie perfected her studio technique in the few short months between the recording of the debut single and the album.
BLONDIE IS PUNK.......2004-04-29
The first album is always the hardest for me to judge. The band has just started out and it looks like it will be great! "In The Flesh" is always a favorite because of its soft spoken words and melody. "X Offender" was originally supposed to be "Sex Offender", but the radio stations would not play it so the title was changed, but that didn't help. "In The Sun" is one of those fun loving beach songs like the further to come "The Tide Is High"! "Rip Her To Shreds" is another classic and will always be. "Kung Fu Girls" is my favorite from the album! Its one of those Kick-Butt songs with great vocals. Overall the debut album did its work and had a few hits that appear on the compilations every now and then.
The sound of the 80's........2004-01-23
Wow, an 80's album in the middle of the 70's? Strange but true. Deborah Harry was the architypal 80's vocalist, infusing Blondie's songs with a pop sensibility that was missing from her punk pals Patti Smith and Chrissie Hynde. It's not difficult to imagine Cyndi Lauper, Belinda Carlisle or even the early Madonna singing these tunes. In that sense Deborah Harry was without doubt the most influential American female vocalist of the late 70's/early 80's.
On their first album Blondie perfectly mix 60's bubblegum pop with garage rock and it's the keyboard that makes all the difference (another one of their innovations that would become standard in the 80's). If Blondie can be described as punk it was their humour and irreverence that made them so, subverting classic pop styles with black and ironic humour e.g. 'Rip Her To Shreds' and 'Attack Of The Giant Ants'. It's also interesting to hear the reggae influence of the time on a track like 'Man Overboard'. 'Heart Of Glass' was also originally written as a reggae tune, but by the time Blondie was gaining some success, the producers took it and turned it into a disco hit, the reason being apparently that "Americans don't buy reggae". Other notable tracks reflecting their time include 'Kung Fu Girl' (Bruce Lee movies being huge in the 70's).
Respect must also be given to Chris Stein for his foresight and musical knowledge in knowing what would instantly appeal to an audience overdosed on rock pretentiousness.

Gee, this is better than Parallel Lines.......2007-06-06
I just bought this album today. I love Blondie but wasn't quite familiar with this album as a whole. What was I thinking? This one sounds way more mature than Parallel Lines. Production-wise it's pretty amazing. It's got some agressive tracks like Eat to the Beat (sounds truly punkish) and some haunting ones like Sheyla (awesome song). A lot of the songs were big singles, but even those that were not are outstanding. I don't feel that's the case with Parallel Lines (Fade Away and Radiate is the only one i feel should've been a single). So, if you like that record you will be blown away by this one.
Never owned a Blondie Album? Absolute Favorite Blondie Album.......2007-05-03
Want to know if you should own this album? - well if you like rock and roll - buy this album. I own 3 LP's because i listened to this album over and over for decades and have worn out 2 of them so i own THREE. It's my favorite Album of all time, of any album. Obviously I'm a huge fan. But if you are still wondering - well if you like Led Zeppelin, buy this - If you like the Beatles, buy this - If you like the Who, Buy this - If you like the Velvet Underground, buy this - If you Like David Bowie, Buy this. Still need convincing - put it this way Andy Warhol picked The Velvet Underground and Blondie as the only 2 bands he ever supported and worked intimately with. So if you want Artistic Greatness - this has Andy Warhol's vote - as he produced the artwork and visuals of the video for this album.
Sounds Perfect.......2007-04-29
Anyone reading this probably knows how awesome and essential this recording is... i'm just weighing in to say the remastering is perfect. This isn't a case of "whoah it sounds so much better than the LP"... it's a case of "it sounds JUST LIKE the LP"... which is all anyone can ask for. I grew up with this album.. played it a zillion times on my LP-12... and trust me Blondie fans.. this remastering is worth your money. It sounds like music. Buy it, enough said.
She made it Magnificent!.......2007-02-19
By October of 1979, Blondie were a part of the rock mainstream thanks to the strength of "Heart of Glass," and Debbie Harry's Marilyn Monroeish sex appeal, both of which propelled the Parallel Lines album into the Top 10 in May of that year. Eat to the Beat was the first Blondie album the public was waiting for and while it received great reviews and eventually went platinum, it seemed a little underrated at the time or perhaps just a little neglected as Parallel Lines is what many fans were still hooked on. But I would say Eat to the Beat is a slightly better album because it fully absorbed the New Wave sound into the rock mainstream. New Wave was no longer a label nor a safer term to describe punk as it became mass-accepted. The band once said this was their quickest album to record, just having come off the road before beginning their first U.S. tour as headliners. This is also their most raw and rockin' album. Debbie's lyrics have never had more poetic spirit on songs like "Dreaming," and "Union City Blue," while her voice has never had more edgy allure. Harry's allure continues on songs like "Shayla", the pop lullaby "Sound-A-Sleep," and "Atomic,"(now a dance classic having been remixed numerous times). But Harry never sounded more punk as she screams from the depths of her soul, "I don't want you to go, please don't leave me alone," on "Victor." What many fans may not remember is how this album's attempt to cover several musical bases worked(unlike 1980's AutoAmerican where the group received a mostly poor reception). Before the reggae flavored, "The Tide is High," there was "Die Young, Stay Pretty," "The Hardest Part" moved to a funk groove, and "Accidents Never Happen," a personal favorite, is one of the best songs Debbie and the band ever brought to vinyl.
As Good as Any!.......2007-01-27
"Eat to the Beat" is another one of my favorite albums, and it ranks right up there with "Parallel Lines." The first track, "Dreaming," kickstarts a great album! It is the perfect pop song, and Clem's drumming is superb! "The Hardest Part" and "Union City Blue" are every bit as good as "Dreaming." "Shayla" is an interesting song, and it has an overall nice sound to it. The song "Eat to the Beat" sounds a lot like the earlier Blondie albums, and it is really fast-paced. "Accidents Never Happen" has a smooth sound to it that makes it another standout. Then, there is "Atomic," which kind of has the same vibe as "Heart of Glass." The only two songs that are really not as enjoyable as the others are "Sound-A-Sleep" and "Victor." "Sound-A-Sleep" is not a bad song, but it just doesn't seem to fit in with the other songs on the album. The music on "Victor" good, but the yelling overpowers it. However, the album closes out with a fun song, "Living in the Real World." This album is definitely essential to any Blondie collection!

While Best Of may not be inclusive enough for the avid collector because it focuses more on Blondie's new wave dance hits than on their punk beginnings, songs like "Heart of Glass," "Dreaming," "The Tide Is High," and "Call Me" display the diverse musical styles this band embraced. It's a new wave album, a reggae album, a dance album, a punk album, and a rap album. Rock-solid songwriting and Debbie Harry's sultry vocals hold the CD together despite the stylistic reaches of the tracks. --Beth Bessmer

I enjoy several songs off this CD, but my favorites are (I Am Always Touched By Your) Presence, Dear, Dreaming, and Sunday Girl. I have also come to appreciate In The Flesh, and One Way or Another. I am even intrigued by Atomic, and amused by Tide Is High. I grew up on a mixture of 60s rock and 50s bluegrass and country and western, so maybe it is not so strange that I like this CD. There seems to be a little of this and that, and something for most tastes.

A Good Collection Of Songs.......2005-11-23
I never owned any album by Blondie other than this Best Of, so I don't know that much about the group's studio albums. I put over half of the songs from this album onto my i-pod so I think it is definitely worth getting unless you can find a more complete compilation with newer songs like Maria and Good Boys. Anyways, my favorite tracks are Heart Of Glass, Dreaming, In The Flesh, Sunday Girl, Call Me, and Atomic. Blondie was certainly a unique talent that paved the way for other female artists. Her songs hold up quite well even today!

You're Not Really Gonna Put This on the Album?.......2007-04-29
Ok, so everyone knows and loves this album, I just want to comment on a couple things. Main one being I was hoping, sitting on the edge of my seat... waiting to see if this latest remaster features something only the import vinyl LP copy had ( I had a Japanese copy from the early 80s but I believe some European LPs had this too)... ok, so as the final notes of the last song "Follow Me", a sort of schlocky ballad that no doubt shocked many of Blondie's original fans fades out, a male voice can be heard to say "you're not really gonna put that on the album?"... ha! While "Follow Me" doesn't exactly spoil the album, hearing that spoken comment really saves it for me, but alas this new CD doesn't have it. I think it's pretty much lost to time at this point. It also would have been nice if they had preserved the album's original artwork (the inner sleeve's "paint smudge" image) and typographic style... although the new essay and photos are fine. Sound quality is nice too, as it is on this entire series. And while I will have to break out my LP Best Of to hear the original "Call Me", the extended version here is one I've never heard before, different from both the 7" version and the version on the Best Of LP. So yeah, buy it.
Overall, a good album........2007-01-27
"Autoamerican" is much different than any of the other Blondie albums that came before it. There are several genres represented throughout this album--rap, reggae, etc. The first song, "Europa," is not something one would normally expect from Blondie, but something about it makes it fit in with the album. "Live it Up" is an easy-going song. The real standouts on this album though are "The Tide is High" and "Rapture." It is really easy to get "Rapture" stuck in your head and really hard to stop singing the rap part. "T-Birds" is not a bad song and neither is "Follow Me." It was a nice bonus to have the long version of the chart-topping "Call Me" included on this CD. "Suzy and Jeffrey" is an interesting song as well. Overall, this is a very good album!

#3 folks, is the reason why I am so glad this CD is available, I have liked "Rapture" since it came out in the early 80's. This great CD is available at Domestic Prices (Under $10 U.S.). It's a great value. Get your copy and enjoy!!

this was the most important album of my senior year in high school. it set the tone, the rhythm for my experience then - though some of the lyrics are absolutely preposterous, blondies charming vocals and signature beat are uplifting and captivating.
give it a try.

Autoamerican is a great album it all starts with the dark instrumental song Europa, then Live it UP gets you ready for Here's for Lookin at you,next the reggea song everyone likes The Tide is High, Angels on the Balcony is a good song,next is Go Through It,then Do the Dark which isn't so dark, next is Rapture, and Walk like Me! all of these are great!!t

not as good as their first one.......2007-05-12
This Album from Blondie was released in 1977, it wasn't my favorite album by them, but it does have it's moments, I like the songs "Detroit 442" and "I'm Alway In Touch By Your Presence dear" Very Nice, even though it's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to their next Fallowing albums.
A Fun Album!.......2007-01-27
I bought this album only knowing one song from it, "Denis." I knew though, that the album had to have other great songs since "Denis" is such a fun pop song. The French really makes it unique. I liked "Detroit 442" the first time I heard it. The entire album is put together so well, and there is so much energy in all the songs that you can't help but enjoy listening to it! "Love at the Pier" is an all around fun song as is "Contact in Red Square." "Presence, Dear" is an easy-going song. The bonus tracks on this CD are really great as well. My favorite is "Scenery." It is also interesting to listen to "Once I Had a Love" since it eventually evolved into the phenomenon "Heart of Glass." "Plastic Letters" is a superb prelude to "Parallel Lines."

A true classic; Deborah Harry has never been better, sliding into "Fan Mail" like liquid mercury, she blasts out of it like a siren; breezy pop "Denis," "Love at the Pier" and "I'm On E" presages later work; PL showcases the most clever and inventive group of the last 30 years -- e.g., the beguiling "Cautious Lip," downright scary "Detroit 442" and "Bermuda Triangle Blues," and best of all, Jimmy Destri's amazing, pulsing and enigmatic "Contact In Red Square," Destri's magnificent keyboard, amazing back-up vocals, and Clem Burke's phenomenal rat-a-tat drumming rushes you along this little thriller only to leave you stranded in a dark alley. More mature than their debut, and not quite the uptempo, chrome-polished pop of "Parallel Lines," "Eat to the Beat," or "Autoamerican," "Plastic Letters" highlights Burke's percussion and Destri's keyboards like no other Blondie project. "Plastic Letters" is Blondie's best. A top-ten must have from the 70s that leaves you yearning for more Destri, Destri's solo "Heart on a Wall" on CD.

Plastic Letters is great! Fan Mail is i good pop song,Denis is a wonderful french/pop song, Kiddnapper is a Elvis type song but this is better becuase its by Blondie!!!(Blondie is and always will be better than Elvis!!)I Didn't Have the Nerve to Say No this is my favorite song on this album (though all the songs are great!!!)I love this alum!
THE SECOND ALBUM.......2004-07-07
We go in a little bit further to 1977. The album itself has some great rockin' tracks to help it out. "Denis" is the highlight of the album, and is fantastic with the French! Then we go to "Touched By Your Presence Dear" which is still today great!!! This may not be the bands best album, but is one of the more punkish and rock n' roll types than the others. Other tracks like "Detroit 442", "Fan Mail", and "Contact In Red Square" are just as good!!!
