5 out of 5 stars Fresh. I love it........2007-07-18

I actually heard track 1 (Highway One) while on a plane. The song impressed me so much that I looked up the album and bought it. I really enjoy this band. They are comparable to Little Big Town (but less folksy). Anyway, I recommend this CD to my friends. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Habit forming ... .......2007-07-12

I received this CD as a gift from an audiophile friend. It hasn't left my CD player since (which, quite honestly, is totally out of character for me). Great writing, wonderful harmonies, terrific hooks -- a masterful blend of simple and complex that just gets better with every listen.

5 out of 5 stars A consistently great album.......2005-08-25

Since I've been reviewing on Amazon, and reading other people's reviews, I've obtained a greater appreciation as to how subjective things such as music, movies and books can be. Knowledgable fans of the same band often have an extraordinary diversity of opinions on, for instance, which is that band's best (or worst) album. With The Jesus and Mary Chain, however, I have to insist that the grungy "Honey's Dead," is clearly their best work, perhaps the culmination of JMC's previous three albums. The band perfectly blends the sonics of "Psychocandy," the best of the songs on "Darklands" ("Happy When It Rains" and "Down On Me"), and the playfulness of "Automatic," to create this incredible album.

Of course, "Honey's Dead" begins with the rather shocking "Reverence" ["I want to die like Jesus Christ (JFK)/ I want to die on a bed of spikes (on a sunny day)"]; and ends with "Frequency" (same lyrics, with the additional line "with the radio on."). Not my favorite songs on "HD," but certainly get one's attention. For pure driving rock, the Reid brothers give us "Far Gone and Out," "Tumbledown," and "Rollercoaster" (the last of which has an almost "Mr Tambourine Man" feel). The Reid Brother's guitar work shines, and the rest of the orchestration is quite superior to anything they did before. Just as good though, are the slower numbers, including "Almost Gold," "Catchfire," and "Sundown."

The two stand-out songs though are "Teenage Lust," and "Sugar Ray." "Teenage Lust," perhaps even more shocking than "Reverence," describes a "little skinny girl doing it for the first time." Of course, given the title, we automatically think "under-age," but the lyrics can be referring to a 19 year old, or even an older woman with a particularly lusty man.

In "Sugar Ray," I just love the inclusion of that cajun sounding aluminum percussive instrument. Although the song is certainly raunchy (lyrically reminiscent of Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lot of Love") there is a surprising tenderness to it as well. Obviously, the song is about having wild sex (especially during the instrumental part), but the man tells his companion that, even though his friends might be having loads of fun, "all I want is you." The lyrics are full of double entendres, but are never really explicit. I still smile when I hear Jim Reid sing in his sly snarling style (similar in some ways to Billy Idol), the lyrics "come enjoy," near the end of the song.

A great, highly underrated album, which, again, I have to insist, is JMC's best.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect pop rock.......2005-05-10

Far Gone and Out may be one of the most perfect I'm-in-love-with-a-girl power pop songs of all time. It's certainly at the top of my list. I have pretty much included this on every mix tape I have made for friends for the past 13 years (wow, is this recording really that old?)

5 out of 5 stars "I'm television sick and I'm television crazy...".......2004-07-30

If any album was going to break the Mary Chain through in the US this is probably would have been the one. The songs off this album were in heavy rotation on their ill-fated stint at Lollapalooza and they cranked out a few videos as well (including, the controversial one for "Teenage Lust").

This was a fine return to form for the boys as they kicked things off with the feedback-drenced "Reverence" that made no bones about their love-hate relationships with the US. Lyrics like "I wanna die just like JFK/I wanna die in the USA" certainly didn't endear them to the politically correct.

But above all else, this album has some very catchy tunes throughout. From the bouncy, rockin' "Far Gone and Out" to the hopelessly romantic "Almost Gold." One of the strengths of the Mary Chain's music is their insanely catch hooks in their songs and this readily evident in songs like "Tumbledown" and Rollercoaster." And yet they can also slow things down and let their fine songwriting shine through as on "Sundown." And then they end things off with an affectionate homage to Jonathan Richman's "Road Runner" with "Frequency," which takes his infectious music and puts to a reprise of "Reverence."

This is a really good album. As others have said, very underrated--even among Mary Chain fans. This is a good one to pick up.

5 out of 5 stars Horribly underappreciated.......2003-05-30

This is one of those "every song could be a single" albums. There aren't many albums like that. Def Leppard's Hysteria, the Stone Roses debut...all I can think of right now.

JAMC was an incendiary band, coming out of nowhere preaching a gospel of teenage girls and unhealthy living over the fuzz of a few chords and a pedestrian drumbeat. Their debut is a justifiable classic and far from a pop masterpiece. Honey's Dead lacks the danger and crude frantic energy of Psychocandy, but the slick production and clear melodic vocals make for an altogether addictive experience.

Automatic gets a lot of praise, but you get the feeling after hearing Honey's Dead that Alan Moulder was just getting a feel for the band. The guitar hooks are more immediate on Honey's Dead, the moods are sharper, the lyrics deliciously simpler. There might not be a song as great as Head On, but you won't find any filler on Honey's Dead. And Monti, the drummer, provides the best early 90's beats this side of Loz.

In a just world this album would have sold millions of copies in America. Buy it, then tell all your friends to do the same.

5 out of 5 stars way cool.......2002-08-29

Rock-solid pop with shredding guitars and feedback, mixed in with more laid-back moments and danceable beats. Tracks 2-8 are the best. "Reverence" and "Frequency" are my least favorite. Although they are good musically, saying stuff like "I want to die just like Jesus Christ" is plain silly. "Teenage Lust," however, is down and dirty while "Sugar Ray" is somewhat abrasive musically while maintaining that laid-back swagger they do so well. That kind of feeling is even more evident on "Catchfire" as it rolls like ocean waves. And "Close To My Soul" is probably my favorite.

I'm certainly not the coolest person in the world, but I always feel very cool when I put this on. Their greatest album.

5 out of 5 stars WALT WILKINS BAND - FIRE,HONEY & ANGELS.......2004-08-07

I first heard Walt Wilkins song 7 Hillsides from Rivertown and immediately bought that and Fire, Honey & Angels. Wow. I am blown away. Our Lady of The Avenue reminds me of Dave Loggins, but then it's followed by Moan & Whine - a song my neighbor the car guy has to hear along with the big fat slides on Sandy Loam. It has terrific folk, blues, tex mex, you name it. I think the only song I don't love on the album is the first, Mechanicsville (kind of a lame lyrical effort from a guy who is capable of these other great songs.) But how many albums do you own that you can say you love all but one cut?

How did I miss this one up until now? Do yourself a favor and buy this right now. You will be playing it over and over when it arrives.

5 out of 5 stars unheralded brilliance, in the mode of dobie gray.......2003-01-01

Almost 20 years ago, Walt gave me a tutorial on a band of popular music that stretches from west texas to memphis, muscle shoals, new orleans, and nashville. walt's music inhabits that breadth of american popular music. you might call it folk or country or singer-songwriter pop music but the gneres don't matter. it's the distillation of all those without regard for genre or formula. "my first night in denver" is the high point of a great c.d. it is the perfect radio song: winning, sincere, fluid, affirming. dobie gray, with a different set of tools, harvested the same fields in the early 70's.

5 out of 5 stars Don't know where he's been.......2002-04-08

Walt Wilkins' lyrics cross boundaries and make good sense, while his music is a Texas mix crossing borders, taking a little from here and there, creating something so unusual it's hard to describe. He plays music, shows pictures of his baby, loves his wife Tina, and still has time to hang out, sign autographs and talk normal right after his music penetrates your soul! He and Pat Green will be more famous than they already are very soon. I'll be glad to have met them both. Fine entertainers on their way UP...my family and I are proud to be watching. Buy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars The best singer/songwriter of today.......2001-10-20

When I was walking through the Country Music Hall of Fame about three weeks ago, an attendant pulled me into a songwriting session. This is where I first heard the haunting voice of Walt Wilkins and his wife Tina. I was literally mesmerized by the way he delivered his songs and how humble and modest he was of his talent. When he jokingly said he had CD's for sale, I was the first to jump up and buy one, and I'm sure glad I did. Having over 400 CD's, I rarely find one that I can play all the way through and not get bored, but "Fire, Honey and Angels" by the Walt Wilkins Band is one that never leaves my stereo. "Ruby's 2 Sad Daughter's" is definitely the most chilling song on the album, to this day when i hear it I get goosebumps. Another song you may recognize is "Big Hopes" which was the title track of a Ty Herndon CD. I recommend this CD to anyone who wishes to know what real talent sounds like.

5 out of 5 stars He does it again.......2001-02-25

Wilkins new album is a powerful testament to the literary quality of all of his work. His first album,"Bull Creek Souvenir" is equally rich in texture and imagery, just not as mature as "Fire Honey and Angels." Indeed, in this album, Wilkins hits his stride as both songwriter and performer. His songwriting far surpasses more popular performers such as Lyle Lovett and his compelling vocals pull you in from the first note and leave you wanting more. A wonderful album.

5 out of 5 stars good, solid entertainment.......2006-07-15

I bought this in 1992 when Nirvana were kings, and I recall this getting mediocre reviews, but for my money HONEY'S DEAD was good then, and still holds up today. TUMBLEDOWN is my favorite of the bunch, and although FAR GONE AND OUT is the "hit", it's still a pop tune in the classic sense of the genre; despite what anyone might argue, JAMC were always a pop band in the vein of the Ramones or the VU.

5 out of 5 stars Sound MUCH improved on BOTH the CD and DVD sides!!.......2006-07-15

First of all, this is a 5 star album to begin with. Originally released in 1992, this release is the JAMC's most intense, searing album, opening with one of their greatest-ever singles, Reverence. The Dual Disc improves the CD sound, and the sound is even better on the DVD side. The 3 videos on the DVD side are all really good, especially Reverence. There is a JAMC video collection on VHS tape, but it is now out-of-print. It is notable that the 3 videos here are NOT on that video collection. This is a MUST for ALL JAMC fans!!!

It's a shame Mark Edwards doesn't think he can continue making music anymore because this is his highest quality recording yet. It's still as raw and personal as any other MDID album, but then that shouldn't come as a surprise. In any case, I recommend this album, it's simply great rock.
