Eponymous

Much as the outtake and B-side collection Dead Letter Office anthologizes the many oddities of R.E.M., 1988's Eponymous is a document testifying to the astounding strength of their formative I.R.S. years. Eponymous reinforces the notion that the inchoate R.E.M. was a rare and brilliant gem of a group. While a somewhat brief CD, it provides quality listening from start to finish with hits such as "The One I Love," "(Don't Go Back to) Rockville," and "Driver 8" tucked amid the likes of an alternate take of "Finest Worksong" and the wonderfully mysterious "Gardening at Night." Especially noteworthy is the inclusion of the original seven-inch version of "Radio Free Europe," the band's 1981 release. --Lorry Fleming --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

4 out of 5 stars More Than in Name Only.......2006-09-28

'Eponymous' is R.E.M.'s conception of their greatest hits from their formidable years with IRS. It is admirable: It works well as a sampler; it adds to the experience with archival recordings that contrast from some of the originals; and it 'Documents' their growth and progression from their roots as a Southern college art band that helped create alternative rock before it became a word. The selections are fine, but they don't totally mesh together like their albums, and, though they don't spoil additional purchases for their original albums (which this reviewer believes are the best series since the Beatles) it doesn't flow or coalesce as well as their Warner Brothers' collection 'In Time, 1988-2003'.

Specifically, the punkier version of "Radio Free Europe" does "squish the [other] recording like a grape," as bassist Mike Mills renders it, but it doesn't make the 'Murmur' album version extraneous, either. All of the rest of the songs show a versatality these perfectionists mastered, including folk-rock "Talk About the Passion", New Wave ("Gardening at Night"), country-accented rock ("Don't Go Back to Rockville"), and, even jazzy music with guitar that has the trajectory of the Ramones ("Can't Get There from Here"). All in all, despite the particular criticisms, 'Eponymous' can jump start or cap off a fine R.E.M. C.D. collection.

5 out of 5 stars Eponymous in name only.......2006-08-12

I want to start this review by saying that another reviewer called this album a waste to get, simply because all of the songs can be found other releases by R.E.M. This isn't a wholly true statement, though.

At the time he wrote that review, Eponymous was the only place where you could find the Hib-tone version of Radio Free Europe. That will change when R.E.M. releases a new I.R.S. years compilation a month from when this review was written. Now, the different vocal mix of Gardening At Night and the mutual drum-horn mix of Finest Worksong can be found on a couple of rare b-sides collections (namely "R.E.M. In The Attic" and "R.E.M. Singles Collected"), but the only other place you can find the song Romance is on the Made In Heaven soundtrack, which--as far as I know--has never been released on CD; only on cassette and vinyl.

So, with all that out of the way, I can move on. Eponymous was my first R.E.M. album ever. I found it one day in my brother's drawer, and I never looked back. This is a very good album for people who want to get familiar with pre-Warner Brothers R.E.M. stuff, but with that being said, it barely scratches the surface of their early work.

On the more technical side of things, the album suffers from many of the typical problems found in early CDs: not much bass, brittle treble, and rather poor dynamics. Be that as it may, it's still a good starting point for the uninitiated and a great collector's item for the die-hard fan.

5 out of 5 stars Great collection of R.E.M. classics.......2006-08-11

While its always better to have each of the individual albums to get some of the deeper cuts. This disk has a great collection of R.E.M. classics.

4 out of 5 stars Essentially a 'Best of' collection of REM.......2005-02-21

This CD is basically a compilation of the first 6 years of REM forming and producing records. So infact this is REM's early songs bundled in one friendly CD. Still enjoyable to listen too and yet a waste to get for all these songs can be found on other REM releases.

5 out of 5 stars Made me a convert.......2005-01-15

Eponymous was the first R.E.M. album I purchased and it turned me into a loyal fan. I soon snatched up their entire back catalog and they were a significant part of my music listening life for years to come. That is about as good a tribute to an album I can give.

Of course, being a greatest hits compilation, all the songs here are great, but there are some alternative mixes here for fans who already have these songs on the studio releases. There is a different version of "Radio Free Europe" here although I like the one on Murmur better. The bass stands out more on the Murmur mix whereas the bass on this album's version is less prominent and seems to be covered up as well as some of the other sound details. I do prefer the different vocal mix to "Gardening at Night" than the one on Chronic Town. The Chronic Town version has very weak sounding vocals which had a negative effect on the song. The vocals here are a lot clearer so the song sounds much better. I disagree with the note on the record sleeve that the Eponymous version of "Finest Worksong" (the 12" and 7" version) is better than the original off Document. This mix has a horn section that I do not care for. A track that some R.E.M. fans may not have is "Romance." It is a very early track that surfaced on the "Made in Heaven" soundtrack (a film I have never heard of but it briefly plays this track). It turns out to be one of my favorite R.E.M. songs. The intense bass really drives the song and makes it unique. Eponymous is worth picking up for that track alone. Eponymous also includes interesting comments about each track.

4 out of 5 stars ALBERT'S NEW WAVE OF METAL.......2004-09-04

It was my hope that Albert would form a band after his often stormy days with Blue Oyster Cult. He and his brother Joe were the songwriting nucleus of B.O.C. and it was a shame they and the Oyster Boys parted ways. Albert and goodwife Deborah win big musically with EPONYMOUS. I suppose that I PLAY THE DRUMS and L.P.#9 could have been deleted from this shiny mother pearl, if I had been in control. But Albert and whatever band he's in, does best on his own songs. It's good to see him and Deborah enlist a little help from their friends, such as Patti Smith and Richard Meltzer. MAD DUDE is my personal favorite in this album.

5 out of 5 stars Moody, spooky-- and funny!.......1999-07-25

That Albert Bouchard is one spooky dude. First he writes & co-writes most of the early, deeply weird BLUE OYSTER CULT material. Then, at a point when B.O.C. fans were starved for new material, hits us with this. What a blast! From the melodic ("Language Of Love") to the funky ("Soul Jive") to jazzy ("Mad Dude") and back to horror-movie stuff ("666--Devil Got Your Mother"-- does the son of Satan REALLY look like John Denver??) and even, in a fit of pure Albert madness, RETRO ("Love Potion #9"-- in acapella!!). It doesn't get any cooler than this, folks! And let me not forget wife Deborah Frost. This lady has one SCARY voice!!! Take a listen to "Time Will Take Care Of You" (as she tells us "I am so BAAAAAAAAD!!!") and tell me what level of Hell she's standing in when she sings this.

THE BRAIN SURGEONS are up to their 5th CD so far-- and while my favorite song turned up on their 4th, they've yet to do a whole album I like more than this one. (But then Bouchard's stuff has a strange way of growing on me over the years...)

    3 out of 5 stars SO SO.......1999-07-03

This Blue Oyster Cult spin-off sounds suspiciously like Talking Heads meets Patty Smith. Hmmm? Funny at times (like Byrne), with clipped female vocals (a'la Smith), I wouldn't say it's bad, I wouldn't say it's good; I just wouldn't say. Pass.

    1 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money.......1999-06-25

Sorry, folks. This album totally sucks. Gone is the mystique that characterized such great albums as "Imaginos," and the earlier lyrical/musical genius of Blue Oyster Cult. The remake of "Love Potion #9" just about made me puke. The only remarkable thing about this album is how completely awful it is, and I'm sorry I shelled out the money for it. It *IS* very aerodynamic, though, and as such, makes one helluva frisbee.

5 out of 5 stars The album title says it all.......1998-08-29

An excellent album from a founding member of Blue Oyster Cult, Albert Bouchard. Most of the instruments are played by Albert and his wife Deborah Frost. Deborah has a great rock and roll voice, melodic and powerful. Like Bouchard's work for Blue Oyster Cult, the lyrics on this album are funny, twisted and curveball. The Brain Surgeons should be a huge band, but this album is very hard to find. There is no justice in pop music. Purchase this album, enjoy the music, and help restore the scales of justice.

Finally-an album that explains the Jewish experience in less than 48 minutes! My visits to Schul and the Chabad mobile with the giant menorah could have never let me in the way this album did. I highly recomend it to the goyim, that like myself, were not too thrilled about the trimming session with the moyel to seal the deal.

If you don't know what I am talking about you have to get this CD because it has a 160 word Jewish glossary that explains it all! Mazel tov Chutzpah!

5 out of 5 stars Phat Hip Hop and that's that!.......2006-03-26

I've had this album in heavy rotation now for a couple of months. The first thing I notices was that the music was sonically big and the beats were legit and reaqlly interesting in an "OG" kind of way. The more I listened, the more it grew on me. Though I convinced myself I wouldn't get the "Jewish" lyrics, I definitely sold myself short. This album is NOT just for Jews. In fact, I would almost say it's more for non Jews. Now, after some review, I wouold say this albun is for anyone who likes good music. There are phat beat and catchy hooks. What more could you want?

3 out of 5 stars Good, but check out Hip Hop Hoodios or Blood of Abraham for real Jewish hip-hop.......2006-01-06

Don't get me wrong, I dig these cats from Chutzpah and what they're doing. There are definitely some pretty funny rhymes here, and "Chanukah Is Da Bomb" is catchy.

But unfortunately, Chutzpah also follows the lengthy trail of Jewish hip-hop parody (see 2 Live Jews, M.O.T., 50 Shekel, etc). If you want to hear real Jewish hip-hop that isn't so much parody, but creative and offering a real cultural twist to the hip-hop genre, check out Latino-Jewish crew Hip Hop Hoodios new album "Agua Pa' La Gente" or Eazy-E protegees Blood of Abraham, whose album 'Eye Dollar Tree' was recently re-issued.

5 out of 5 stars Better than most hip hop.......2005-12-17

Finally some hip hop that isn't all about bling, the Amex Black card and calling woman bad names. Though it's technically Jewish, it's just plain old good, thumpin' hip hop. I am not Jewish and still love it...it's in heavy rotation in my iPod now. These guys are as good (or better) as anyone out there.

5 out of 5 stars Chutzpah is Da Bomb!.......2005-12-13

Authentic hip hop grooves, catchy tunes, a sense of humor, and Jewish Pride make this CD a perfect Chanukah gift for my Jewish friends and some of my hip hop ones as well. I really got into the music which is sort of like "eminem" sideways, 70s funk - especialy "Sly and the Family Stone" and even a little "Sugar Hill Gang" fun for the whole family..I mean "mishpucha."

And I'm not saying this because they're friends of mine. They really do rock! Has to be one of the best CDs I've bought this year. Lots of driven guitar, funky bass and drums and smooth lyrics make for one great album. Favourite tracks have to be "Faded", "Heaven", "Stereophonic", "Don't Wanna Know" (track #2!) and of course the kickin' cover of The Police's "So Lonely". If you live in the Tampa Bay area... go check out Soul System sometime. You'll be glad you did. I know I was!
