Brave Words
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Martin Phillipps, already on his 8th or 9th or 30th lineup of the Chills, made a near masterpiece with Brave Words. Keyboards, guitars and the New Zealander's reedy voice drive brilliant songs that make something new of concepts like "Rain" and "Ghosts" while also giving forth with deceptively cheery formulations like "Look for the Good in Others and They'll See the Good in You." Phillipps constantly surprises here, putting pressure on his tidily constructed tunes by blurting out dark fantasies about death and romance and the death of romance. The CD adds three bonus tracks. --Rickey Wright --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Another feast for Handelians.......2003-12-25
Here's another astonishing piece for all Handelians. Many of Handel's great pieces have sadly been neglected - just like many of Richard Strauss' operas which have only recently received attention from people like Botstein, Korsten and Sinopoli (deceased). Thankfully, Gardiner and his team took the trouble to record this astonishing masterpiece. I simply love this piece - Saul!! The Monteverdi choir is the best in the world - listen to their stunning virtuosity here. Thank you, Gardiner!!
Excellent music.......2003-09-14
Saul is one of those lesser known works by Handel. I certainly prefer Solomon, the Messiah or Israel in Egypt. Nevertheless, there is plenty of glorious music in Saul. The Monteverdi sings with their customary virtuosity. Casting of solo parts is superb. A bit on the pricey side but this is an investment that will yield rich dividends over a long period of time. Instead of listening to the Messiah all the time, or Solomon or Jephtha, why not be more daring and explore this lesser known work by Handel?

brilliant songs, but DON'T BUY THIS.......2006-01-23
It is very hard to screw up a good song, but the production and mix on this record are terrible. It's a real let down after the brilliant Kaleidoscope World album by the Chills (the first one you should buy on CD if you don't already own it).
A few years ago, Martin Phillipps, the head Chill, put out a 3 CD set called "Secret Box" that contained 70 home demos, b sides, live and radio recordings. Most of the songs from Brave Word are on that set, but are mixed, performed and produced a million times better. That set is essential for Kaleidoscope World fans.
From The Chills Website:
I remembered that you had mentioned in interviews that you had wanted to remix it and call it Braver Words.
"The problem with Brave Words is that it was done really, really fast. It was recorded and mixed in about two weeks. Obviously, that's the first album after 7 years, plus that band was about 2 1/2 months old at that stage. In all aspects that record was really done fast. we basically just recorded things as they had been live. Then we went back and sort of went overboard trying to redo some stuff to make it sound as big as we'd been hearing it."
Buy this if you have to, but the Secret Box is the best way to hear these songs.
if only it had a little more punch..........2004-08-03
...i'd give it the full 5 stars. this is the chills' first proper studio album. after touring extensively, going through several line-ups, and releasing a myriad 7"s over the course of 6-7 years, they finally got themselves together for this album. only, compared to their previous vinyl-only offerings--which have since been collected on the excellent kaleidescope world--this falls a little flat. the songs are great, and more immediately accessible than their predecessors, but they were all new to the band, and hadn't been performed at shows previous to the recording of the album. so the record soundss like a band feeling out a batch of new songs, and while many of these tracks would go on to become live staples and fan favorites, here they are like ducklings, waddling around, running into things...but cute all the same.
Best record you've never heard.......2001-11-19
Glorious album of pop and emotion from the best band in the Southern Hemisphere. Not an idle claim as New Zealand has produced a load of great bands that beat Australia by some way. "Night of Chill Blue" is the most tender love song I have ever heard. Martyn Phillips has something to say as a writer without being dogmatic or banal. Sweet without being sickening, singalong without being dumb and upbeat without having a lobotomy. A band that know that there are some things worth celebrating and some things worth reflecting upon. And they were sublime live. Buy!
New Zealand's best-ever band?.......1998-08-19
This album is a fine example of the consistently high-quality music of the Chills, whom I personally rate as New Zealand's best band.Ever. It typifies the 'Dunedin Sound ',originating in the early 80s,and which is (way before the US discovered it) closely akin to much of today's college radio 'alternative' guitar rock. It was so far ahead of its time that only now has can the average US music afficionado truly appreciate it (we connoiseurs have known and recognised their genius for years).

Andy Williams is the best!.......2007-02-01
Just saw Andy Williams at Branson this Christmas! Fabulous! What a great man and entertainer! We purchased this album because Andy sings the song "Words" at his concert but he no longer sells this album in Branson. Amazon is the only place to get this great album! Classic!
Greatest of Andy Williams Works! I give it 5+++++stars!!.......2000-08-22
I just want to second the motion that reviewer Jennifer Leskala has written here on behalf of this album of truly wonderful music. I think it's Andy's best ever. And, I guess I have a soft spot in my heart for it because, I, too, witnessed the dance performance Natalia Melony gave to Andy's work of art. Perhaps you will be able to envision in your mind a beautiful long-haired blonde goddess dancing divinely, and twirling about to this beautiful music.....and I think you WILL see the "Vision" of her as you listen to these incredible pieces of music, done as only Andy Williams can do. Truly one of my favorite albums of all time. It is one you will treasure and want to listen to time and time again. Thanks, Andy, for the wonderful entertainment you continue to give the world. Al Reinking
This is Andy Williams finest work!.......2000-08-13
I happen to believe this is Andy's best album. I can listen to it over and over, it is so beautiful, the words written for the classical melodies are perfection. I also love this album so much because I once saw a lessor-known entertainer by the name of, Natalia Melony, do an entire show of dancing to this entire album of songs. She was something to see. The combination of Andy's music with Natalia's beauty and incredible dancing, was breathtaking. It was so incredible it gave me chills up my spine. In case you are wondering who she is, you can join her fan club on Yahoo. Just punch in her name in the Clubs search box. To my amazement, I just found her name listed and joined her club! To anyone thinking of purchasing this CD, you will not be disappointed. It's one of the best albums in my whole collection of music. Thank you. Jennifer Leskala
One of Andy's best albums. Andy has never sounded better!!.......1999-10-30
This album, recorded in London in 1984, is the finest Williams album of the past several years. The unique blending of classical melodies with lyrics makes this album unlike any other you will find. Andy truly did something magical here. With albums like this it is no wonder that Andy has been a world wide favorite for over forty years. This album is a MUST HAVE for any fan of ANDY WILLIAMS. In addition, any lover of classical music will find this an excellent addition to their collections. Thank you ANDY!!!
it's a great collection !.......1999-09-01

I love the songs, especially In my world of illusion,Another winter's day,Home..I'd like to buy this album but unfortunately it's always out of stock. While waiting for the album, can anybody please send me the lyrics of those songs or tell me how to find them ? Thanks ...

These guys were so so so killer!.......2006-06-23
Such a perfect band for Texas! Take equal parts Sabbath, Killdozer, Skynard and Weird Al and you've got Agony Column. I worshipped these guys from late 80s to early 90s. Live shows unparalelle and the production on the first two records was as heavy as you can handle. The first record God, Guns and Guts is, I think, far superior to Brave Words...but they're both good.
Rock on.
this is superunknown if anything is.......2005-08-16
Texas hellbilly metal blues. . . This is music with the metal edge and a sense of humor as well. Classic heavy metal sound infused with some Southern goodness, outstanding tracks include the title track, Big Two-Hearted Sammy, and Hole to Hell. Also on this album is an excellent cover of Mountain's classic Mississippi Queen.
